chapter 20

wooyoung san

"you did what?" hyunjin gaped at him sceptically, sipping his iced latte.

"like i said," san repeated, stirring his own drink patiently, "i suggested to wooyoung that we go out before he meets my parents to get to know each other better."

"is that code for something? wooyoung doesn't... go on dates. did you hear him correctly?" hyunjin cocked his head, adjusting his fake accessory glasses.

"well, he does now. i asked my boyfriend on a date! what's wrong with that? he clearly said 'yes', too." san scoffed.

"wooyoung doesn't go on dates." hyunjin repeated, regarding san with wonder.  "you really are something."

"hm. well somebody had to," san continued, "so it might as well be me. that boy's actually a coward. you should have seen how nervous he was!"

"are you sure we have the same person?" the other laughed, while san rolled his eyes. "jung wooyoung went soft for you."

"and only for me." san grinned, his crescent eyes brightening the atmosphere.

the two sat in the café jeongin and somin worked in, the day after san's encounter with yeosang. he only felt gratitude towards hyunjin for being such a good friend, but he also felt slightly guilty.

was he replacing his old friends too easily? no. he shook his head at his own thoughts. i'm not the one being petty and refusing to apologise.

"gossiping about me?" wooyoung suddenly appeared behind san's chair, throwing his arms around the surprised boy's chest and leaning over him with a smile.

"no." san hit him playfully, making a face at hyunjin who was smiling at him suggestively.

"sit here, i'll get myself another chair." he got up from his own quickly and patted the seat insistently.

wooyoung obliged and immediately propped his chin on his hands and stared intently at hyunjin, to which san snorted and went to find a spare seat.

a waiter with his back to them was scribbling on a notepad, leaning lazily against a counter. the café wasn't too busy, so he didn't have much to do.

"excuse me?" san tapped the boy on the shoulder, to which he responded by spinning round on his heel in surprise and bowing out of habit. it was jeongin.

"oh! san?" san laughed at the younger's actions, leaning down to pick up his dropped notepad.

"sorry," he apologised with a smile, greeted by a bright one from the young waiter.  "could i have another chair? my boyfriend showed up randomly."

"your- yes! sure." jeongin scuttled behind the counter and returned with a chair, placing it carefully at their table before standing politely. "can i get you anything?"

the question was directed at wooyoung, but the boy didn't respond, leaving jeongin awkwardly waiting there while biting his lip.

san came to stand next to jeongin, answering for him."he'll have a coffee." he smacked the other on the arm lightly before adding to the younger, "black, like his soul."

jeongin nodded and left them, his previously toothy smile reduced to a tight lipped attempt. when he was gone, san sat down, giving wooyoung a meaningful glance.

"he's just my friend."

"i know. i was having a staring contest with hyunjin." he blinked vigorously, eyes wet when he acknowledged san.

pouting childishly, wooyoung clicked his tongue sadly. "you know i don't like black coffee."

"i know." san affirmed, smiling at him as hyunjin laughed.

"are you even jung wooyoung?" the boy squinted at him, pretending to examine his face carefully.

"who knows." wooyoung grinned, throwing his arm around san casually and quirking an eyebrow at the other who was steadily becoming a third-wheel.

"y-your coffee." jeongin announced, placing the steaming cup in front of them and stepping back.

"wait, jeongin," san started, unhappy with the younger's mood change. "are you almost on your break?"

"yes." he replied simply after glancing at his watch.

"come sit with us. wooyoung wants to apologise." he offered, kicking his protesting boyfriend under the table while smiling at jeongin.

"o-okay," the younger replied with the flash of a smile, turning away and going behind the counter to untie his apron.

"so how do you know jeongin?" hyunjin questioned, eyes following the younger curiously.

"we met the other day at this café. he's really sweet even though he's younger than us. why do you ask?" san replied while wooyoung whistled uninterestedly.

"i don't know. he looks familiar..." hyunjin trailed off, eyes scanning the said boy quizzically as he came over with a second chair and sat down awkwardly next to the speaker opposite san and wooyoung.

san nudged his boyfriend under the table,  discretely gesturing in the newcomer's direction.

"i'm... sorry for-" he apologised reluctantly, avoiding the younger's eyes. "you know."

"...thanks," jeongin glanced between wooyoung and san skeptically, unsure of what to say.

an unsettling silence bestowed the atmosphere, san rapping his fingers on the table anxiously while wooyoung examined his coffee distastefully and hyunjin stared weirdly at jeongin.

"so," san cleared his throat, pursing his lips and focusing on a cobweb nestled in the corner of the ceiling.

"i'm sorry," hyunjin suddenly spluttered, "but do i know you?"

jeongin glanced up at him in alarm. "no?" he replied quickly, voice a little high. "i don't think so-"

"wait!" hyunjin clicked his fingers in realisation, a satisfied look settling his features. "i've got it. i went to your high school when you were a junior!"

"really." jeongin mumbled, casting his eyes down.

"yeah! fuck, you look so different!" hyunjin rambled excitedly.

"language." san gasped. "there's a baby at the table."

wooyoung smirked, poking his cheek. "you mean you?" san hit him once again.

"i remember now! you had those big glasses! and braces! you hung around with... na jaemin, right?" hyunjin continued, ignoring the pair.

jeongin clasped his hands uncomfortably. "right." he didn't say anymore, and hyunjin began to understand maybe he was saying the wrong things.

"are you two not friends anymore?" he tried after another moment of silence.

"no." jeongin sighed. "he transferred to another high school. with his boyfriend."

an image suddenly surfaced to a san's mind. a few years ago, a new kid with fluffy pink hair... transferred. with his boyfriend... and there had been another. with dark hair and an eye smile that could melt your heart. but san recalled how rare he had smiled.

"this is going to sound weird." san began, eyebrows furrowed as he leaned forward. "was his name lee jeno?"

jeongin tensed up, throwing an indescribable look in his direction. "yes. it was."

"don't tell me he transferred to your high school!" hyunjin shook his head in disbelief. "what a coincidence."

even wooyoung looked invested in the conversation now, although he tried to remain uninterested. "was?" san pressed, confused by the younger's wording.

"is." jeongin corrected himself quietly.  "his name is lee jeno."

wooyoung stirred his coffee loudly, rolling his shoulders and obviously averting his eyes. "why is the atmosphere awkward?"

"i don't know." san shrugged, before turning back to jeongin. "are you okay, man?"

"yeah." jeongin said slowly, stretching out the word, as if trying it for the first time. "i am. we're not really friends anymore. it was a long time ago."

san tried for an assuring smile. "you sure? wanna talk about it?"

wooyoung tapped him on the shoulder and sat forward. "hey, who's your boyfriend?" he joked, not liking being left out.

the words seemed to flip a switch in jeongin, who immediately narrowed his eyes and ran his tongue over his teeth in his mouth. "i should go."

"you should." wooyoung mumbled under his breath the same time san said, "no, stay!"

"really, i should get back to my shift." jeongin smiled, standing abruptly and squeezing san's shoulder briefly.

"see you, then." san voiced disappointedly, watching the younger walk off with his head down.

"i'm worried about that kid." hyunjin frowned, eyes also following him carefully.

"i'm not." wooyoung replied lightly, smiling sweetly at both of them.

"what's your problem, jung?" san questioned, beginning to get annoyed with his boyfriend. "jeongin's a good kid."

"no problem," wooyoung shrugged nonchalantly. "just don't trust him much."

this earned a disbelieving laugh from hyunjin, who shook his head and placed his fake glasses on the table to rub his tired eyes. "you don't trust anyone, man. but he's literally a cute high schooler."

wooyoung ignored him, turning to san and putting on a cute face. "do you think he's cute?"

san gave an innocent smile, leaning a little closer to his boyfriend. "yeah, i guess. I think he's pretty cute."

"what!?" wooyoung's voice was weird and louder than usual, making san shush him while trying to conceal his own laugh. "i'm cuter though."

san pretended to think really hard, his heart melting at the other's attempt to be cute. "nah... he's-"

"i dare you to finish that sentence." wooyoung began poking his sides, tickling san relentlessly as he began to giggle uncontrollably.

"i- wait-" he broke off, body racked with laughs. "wooyoung- stop-" while he wriggled in his seat, hyunjin sighed and checked his watch.

"yeah? yeah?" wooyoung fought smiles, finally ceasing his tickling, leaving san breathlessly squirming.

"he's cute," san repeated, holding his sides and leaning right forwards, so that he and wooyoung barely had space between them. "but you're hot."

the other's cheeks heated, and san leaned back with a sweet laugh, leaving his boyfriend basically restraining himself from nigh-attacking san right there and then.

"ew ew ew." hyunjin made a gagging noise. "ya'll are too cute. my cue to leave."

san stood up at the same time as hyunjin, grinning wildly and clutching his arm. "let's go. wooyoung probably wouldn't notice." the still sitting boy was caught in a daze, face contorted in what seemed to be a huge effort not to smile.

"you two go. i'll just..." he gestured to the door, lowering his head to the table and repeatedly banging it on the surface.

hyunjin and san laughed, quickly exiting the café, leaving wooyoung there to contemplate whatever was going on in his head.

san wooyoung

as soon as san and hyunjin left, he raised his head, checking the two were out of sight before he sat up and fixed his hair.

wooyoung rubbed his forehead with a slight pout, raising himself from his chair and stretching slowly.

he walking over to the café counter, peering over in search of the young waiter he had earlier undoubtedly recognised.

instead, his eyes found somin, and he figured that was better than no one. "somin?"

"wooyoung!" the girl spun around, twirling her dark hair around her finger. "you never called me back after-"

"whatever, somin. where's jeongin?" he asked impatiently, uninterested by the girl's seductive attempts.

"jeongin?" disappointment fell on her pretty features. "he just finished. should be going out the back door-"

"thanks." he cut her off, making his way to the given direction.

"wait, wooyoung-" she called after him, but he was already out the door.

when he caught up with the smaller figure, he grabbed his shoulder harshly to get him to stop. "jeongin."

"oh, it's you." the younger replied tiredly, the last word seeming to choke him.

"yeah, me. listen-" wooyoung began, searching the younger's hard eyes.

"i don't really want to hear it." he gave a brief smile, trying to turn away, but wooyoung didn't let him.

"he doesn't know, jeongin." wooyoung's shoulders slumped, desperation filling his voice now.

"clearly." jeongin's lips tightened, and he shrugged wooyoung off. "don't do anything stupid."

"please don't tell him." wooyoung begged, composure leaving him entirely. "i barely remember anything. it's a miracle i remember you."

jeongin gave a bitter laugh. "you should be grateful he doesn't remember."

wooyoung's face crumpled as jeongin turned away. "jeongin-"

"the truth will come out someday, jung. whether or not it's from me, you, or someone else." the younger shouted over his shoulder as he left wooyoung standing there, alone.

"not if i have anything to say about it." he said quietly to himself, an agreement with himself he decided never to break.
