Chapter 30
Will shook the hot coffee off of his hand as he cursed. The last two days had been miserable, he had been miserable the moment he had left Carmen's bed. Every moment of pain he had ever felt, every moment of pain he would ever feel, was well deserved for leaving her like he had. She had opened up to him, pulled him in, and he had loved every minute of it. He loved her, and he was a coward.
These were facts that he could no longer deny. Lee looked across their desks at him with a raised eyebrow, but he didn't say a word. Will only scowled at him.
"What's eating you Rounder?" one of the younger men, who they called Rabbit, asked.
"I'm just having one of those days," Will said, throwing himself down in his chair, daring Lee to say something. He kept his face neutral as he buried his head back in his computer screen.
Will had used the excuse that Carmen had only asked for one night, then he had used the same excuse he had been using, which was that he was no good for her. Now, he had moved on to the probability that she was already gone and he had lost his chance. The reality was that if the rest of his life was going to be like the past couple of days had been he was royally screwed.
He had been kidding himself when he had thought one night would be enough, he would never have enough of Carmen, what man would? He banged on his mouse harder than he needed too and he swore he saw Lee's lip twitch.
"Do you have something to say?" he asked Lee. A few of the men on their Team turned towards them, interested in their exchange. Lee and Will were the old timers on the Team, and they were both well respected by everyone, just as Josh and Kellan had been when Will and Lee had been new to the Team. However, after Will's experience's he was almost a legend, both on the combat and the womanizing front, but Rabbit was trying to give him a run for his money on the latter. Not that Will particularly cared, in fact he wished him luck. It had been fun when he was younger.
Will stared down Lee, waiting for him to answer.
"Oh, how the mighty have fallen."
"Fallen?" one of the most recent additions to the team asked. He was a young kid called Bulldog that always looked at Will with such hero-worship.
"Yep, Will 'Rounder' Pruitt is in love." Lee grinned shaking his head. "He's met his match and she's kicking his ass."
Will opened his mouth to give him a good telling off in very limited vocabulary when Rabbit gave a low whistle as he looked out the window. Will looked at him with a frown before shooting Lee a look but deciding to hold his tongue.
A few of the men joined Rabbit at the window and there was a low murmur of appreciation that could only be generated by a beautiful woman, but Will wasn't interested, neither was Lee, who only grinned wider.
"Challenge accepted," Rabbit said and Will watched some money change hands before rolling his eyes.
"You should be glad that Will isn't game this time, otherwise you wouldn't stand a chance." Will heard one of the men say.
Lee's phone rang and he picked it up listening before saying yes sir and hanging up as he rose to his feet. He scanned everyone as they moved back to their desks, the sight outside the window must have disappeared. "Rounder, Rabbit and Bulldog, come with me."
They stood reaching for their caps as they followed Lee out the door.
"What's up Spider?" Rabbit asked Lee, eager for any type of excitement.
"I think you might get your chance to win your bet." Lee looked at Will. "Then again, maybe not."
Will's eyes narrowed as he looked at Lee, who pushed through the doors to the visiting room at the end of the hall that was rarely used. The four men were brought up short by the sight before them. Rabbit and Bulldog looked like they had won the lottery as their eyes grew wide.
Draped across one of the chairs was Kelly Harper, Laura Stevens was sitting in a chair by the window, her long legs crossed at the ankle in a very lady like way as she looked through a magazine, and Carmen Morales, who was wearing a very short skirt and high heels, sat on a table swinging her delectable looking legs.
"Will!" Kelly jumped up from her seat and ran towards Will, placing a kiss on his cheek. He hardly noticed as he stared down Carmen who looked cold and bored, just the same as Laura looked.
"Davis, you didn't tell me it would be Will helping us today." Kelly linked her arm through his. "You look yummy in your uniform." She peeked around him at the other men. 'You all do," she giggled.
Will's eyes left Carmen long enough to note Davis sitting next to his wife.
"I wasn't sure who we would get, was I?" Davis replied.
Will let his eyes circle back to Carmen who rose with grace from the table. Her beautiful golden hair fell in a tangle down her back and her sundress highlighted her beautiful curves. He wanted to fall to her feet and beg forgiveness.
He watched as Rabbit stepped forward, holding out his hand. "I'm James McKay, this is Robbie Jessup, and this is Will Pruitt."
"We know Will," Laura said as she stood. "Can we get on with it? We have a flight to catch this evening."
"These are the tallest men on the Team, as requested. You have the full agreement of the Navy as long as there are no photographs of their faces."
"Don't worry, it's not their faces we want to see.," Davis said, motioning to the women to join him. They complied without hesitation.
"Do we have a say in this?" Will asked, his eyes never leaving Carmen. He could guess what was going on, he was being recruited for a photoshoot.
"No," Lee said, all seriousness. "Where and when?"
The time of one hour and a location on the docks was given. "Can Dress Whites be arranged?" Davis asked.
"According to Admiral Wren, anything can be arranged," Lee said.
"Ohhh, even better." Kelly gushed.
Will was not happy, and he shot first Lee and then Davis a look that left them in little doubt of it. Davis only grinned but Lee looked concerned, sensing that his friend might be at his limit.
Davis took Kelly and placed her in front of each man turning them so that their profiles where towards him and then having them go toe to toe. Kelly was enjoying every minute of it as she pressed against each man. Will watched as Rabbit's arm snuck around her waist and pulled her closer, Bulldog look dumbstruck, and Will bared it.
Laura was next, it went smoothly with Bulldog, but when she was paired with Rabbit and his arm snuck around her she cut him off quickly. "No, I think not." When she got to Will she looked at him her face giving nothing away as he kept a respectable distance.
Carmen was next and it was the same with Bulldog, but this time he blushed. Rabbit pulled her close and she didn't object but she didn't encourage him either. Will wanted to hit him. When she got to Will she looked up at him, and he felt his heartrate change as he looked down into her eyes, but there was nothing there. She looked up at him as if she wasn't even seeing him. There was no recognition that she had spent a night in his arms, that she had told him that she wanted him more than anything, or that they had shared their deepest secrets.
Perhaps one night really had been enough for her?
He ran his fingers lightly up her arm and across her bare shoulder, stopping at her ear and tracing it softly, and it was like he had ignited a fire. Her eyes flashed and her lips parted as she melted into him. Thank God, Will thought, he hadn't lost her totally.
"Thanks, I got what I need," Davis said breaking the moment. "We'll see you in an hour."
After they had left Rabbit looked pleased with life. "I've never been so glad to be so tall in my life. I'm gonna win that bet."
"I doubt that," Bulldog said looking at Will. "Let's go up the ante." He pulled Rabbit from the room, listening to him talk about how easy it was going to be, but Bulldog's money was on his hero Will.
"Why can't you all stop interfering?" Will asked after the others had gone.
"Because you're a dumb ass. But, for the record, this was arranged months ago. Which is kind of funny if you think about it."
"How exactly is it funny?" Will took a calming breath as Lee led the way out of the room. He had to go change into his dress uniform and he wasn't looking forward to it.
"You and Carmen were destined to meet, even if you hadn't worked for Josh, you still would have met her here today. It's a little bit like fate."
"No, it's not." Will had to admit it. "Without her I never would have passed my psych eval and I wouldn't be here today."
No matter what he did the woman was continually saving him from himself, but had she saved him in enough time to make him worthy of her?
