Misfortune Rising

Charlie sat in a park, her hat lowered to cover her eyes. Her laptop was set on her lap, it's screen portraying articles of myths of Nadakhan the Djinn.

Everyone else was split into teams. Jay and Nya were going undercover in the police to find where the Misfortune's Keep might be, since that information would be more classified. Zane and Jay were working on recovering the Bounty, which had been impounded not long after their capture. Cole and Lloyd were flying their dragons above the city, looking for Nadakhan the old fashioned way.

As she scrolled down, she found a picture of Nya. She was going to ignore it, figuring it was a pop-up add about their prison break or something. But upon further inspection, the Master of Darkness saw that it wasn't Nya, but a woman named Delara.

Charlie read through the article hungrily, absorbing as much as she could at once. Apparently, Delara was the quartermaster of Misfortune's Keep. She had soft ebony hair that framed her olive toned face, and almond brown eyes that shimmered with sincerity. Charlie wondered if she was Nya's ancestor, because Soto was right. The resemblance was uncanny.

The chestnut haired girl raised her comm to her mouth. "Guys, I figured out what Soto meant when he told Nya she looked just like 'her'." She said.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?" Cole asked.

"Nya has an uncanny resemblance to a woman on Nadakhan's crew." Charlie said as she read through the article further. "Her name was Delara, and apparently she was Nadakhan's lover."

"What?!" Nya practically screeched. Jay's voice followed, reminding her to be quiet.

Charlie smiled to herself at the Master of Water's reaction. "Looks like. How are things on your guys' end?"

"Right." Nya sounded like she was retaining her composure. "Okay, I've located Nadakhan's ship. It was last recorded to be seen in Gypsy Cove. Three clicks north of Cannon Beach."

"Thanks, Delara. Oh, I mean Nya." Cole joked, followed by Lloyd's laugh.

"Not funny." She groaned. "Let's see how you like it when you look like our enemy's sweetheart."

"Gypsy Cove isn't far." Lloyd said. "We'll let you know what we see when we get there."

"I'll meet you guys at Yang Tavern?" Charlie asked.

"You got it." Came her brother's reply.

"Affirmative." Zane confirmed.

"Yeah." Jay replied unenthusiastically. He'd been down ever since they broke out of prison, oddly enough.

"Be careful, Charlie." Cole said.

Charlie couldn't help but smile. The Yang Tavern was in a seedy part of Ninjago City, where the less than fortunate spent their time.

"I will." She assured her lover. The Master of Darkness closed her laptop and put it in her backpack before slinging it over her shoulders and walking down the street.

After a while, Charlie had a gut instinct to check in with her team. "Any sign of Nadakhan's ship?"

"Not exactly." Said Lloyd. "But there is evidence of it. Looks like some repairs were made. But this is strange. What is electrical wiring doing on an old pirate ship?"

"Maybe it already set off to sea?" Cole suggested.

"I'm getting no readings of it anywhere." Nya said. "You'd think a big pirate ship would get someone's attention."

Charlie furrowed her brow. "If Nadakhan's ship isn't there, and it's not at sea, where is it?"

Pit fights were a common sight at Yang Tavern. In fact, it was one of the main attractions. The Ninja sat at their own table in the corner, quietly discussing their game plan.

"I'm so tired of all this sneaking around." Kai complained.

"We're ninja." Charlie reminded him.

"Easy, Kai." Lloyd said to ease him. "We're all itching to get back into action. But so far two of our own have gone missing, and none of us have yet to lay an eye on him."

Charlie felt a slight shift, a flicker of guilt, but she couldn't tell from who.

"If only we knew someone who had faced him and could tell us what to expect." Zane lamented.

The guilt burned hotter, tingling Charlie's skin. Her eyes fell on Jay, who looked at the table with downcast eyes. She furrowed her brow, unsure of what to think. The Master of Lightning had been downcast lately, so maybe that was what Charlie was sensing.

"I wish Wu were here to guide us." Lloyd said through a sigh.

"No!" Jay cried. "Don't say that word!" Upon the stares of his peers, the Blue Ninja tried to regain his composure. "I mean, why wish when we have everything we need here, right? Haha. Go, Ninja, go?"

Charlie narrowed her mismatched eyes. Something was definitely up with Jay.

Suddenly, everyone in the tavern turned their way.

"Nice going." Cole snapped. "You blew our cover."

Nya shook her head. "No, he didn't." She pointed up to the small TV that hung above them. On the screen were the images of what looked like a pirate ship/plane combination bombarding the city. A reporter voiced over the coverage.

"I don't know why this is news anymore, but Ninjago City's once again under attack by pirates. Or dare I say, Sky Pirates?"

"We have to help!" Cole said, standing.

"But we're fugitives." Zane reminded him.

Charlie stood as well. "Doesn't matter. We protect the innocent."

"And Soto said the map is on that ship." Nya recalled. "If we wanna stop Nadakhan, we need it."

Kai stood. His hazel eyes held a firey gleam. "Well, what are we waiting for? I thought we were all itching to get back into action."

~~~~~
The Ninja all ran across the rooftops of Ninjago City. They stopped at the edge of one, examining the damage Nadakhan had done to the city.
"For our own safety," said Lloyd. "travel with someone. We need to protect the people, but also get that map."
"I forgot, what does the map look like?" Cole asked.
"It's on a lantern." Zane said. "Look for a lantern."
"Ninja, go!" The Spinjitzu-ed off the roof, jumping into the fray.
Cole and Charlie looked for a way to climb on to the ship when they found a good roof. On the ship there was a large person, they're face half covered by a mask. What could be seen was blue and leathery.
"Boy, you're real ugly." Cole remarked.
"I'm not a boy, I'm a lady." She said, slamming herself onto Cole. Charlie jumped back, throwing her Darkness at the beefcake of a woman. Lloyd joined their fight, and together they threw her off the roof.
But another challenger approached. A smaller man with a kabuki mask that changed to happy and angry expressions. The trip spun into their tornadoes, but the Kabuki man spun in his own.
"So he knows Spinjitzu!" Lloyd said. "Let's see if he knows Airjitzu."
The three spun upwards onto a billboard, watching as the Kabuki man spun around angrily.
"Forget him." Lloyd said. "We need to get that lantern."
~~~~~

Cole and Charlie slunk around the ship, searching for the lantern. They were in the bridge, which was incredibly advanced, much like the Bounty.

Suddenly, a voice as slick as a oily snake selling used cars spoke up behind them. "I ain't afraid to shoot you in the back." A gun fired.

"Charlie!" Cole shoved her out of the way of the bullet, putting himself in the line of fire.

The Master of Darkness's eyes widened in terror as she watched the bullet pass through her lover. But no harm came to Cole, seeing he was a ghost. It instead ricocheted around the room, bouncing every which way until it hit the Realm Crystal.

"You shot the Realm Crystal!" Cole snapped.

"Well, you made me miss!" Retorted the gunman.

Charlie looked and saw that in the shattered remains of the Realm Crystal was a lantern. She snatched it up. "I got it." She said to Cole. They ran up to the deck where Lloyd was searching. Charlie showed the lantern to her brother. "Let's get out of here."

The three jumped off, landing on a nearby building and jumping on to the street. They split off, running away so the police wouldn't find them. "

We've got the lantern." Cole announced. "Return to the meeting point."

Once they were all gathered on the roof top, Charlie held out the lantern. "Alright, now let's fire this lantern up and see what this map is. Kai, a little light?"

No response.

Charlie looked for her firey friend. "Kai?"

"Where's Kai?" Nya asked upon seeing that her brother was missing.

Guilt raged from somewhere, and Jay hummed nervously. "Uh..."

Charlie narrowed her eyes at him, but before she could voice anything the ground shook. Everyone was thrown to the ground.

"What was that?" Zane asked as he tried to get up.

Charlie felt a sinking nausea, a feeling she only got when something was horribly wrong. "I don't know. But I'm afraid to find out."
