Knowledge Becomes Chaos
He couldn't resist a snort at that. "Relax, it's not like you're in any danger."
"I don't know, apart from you basically saying that's real?!" The girl fired back. Sans held up his hands, keeping them there as he continued.
"I just wanted to see the sights, honest. Got carried away with it all. You wanna know what's going on?"
"Duh! I feel like a villain is gonna reveal himself or something with his evil plans and shit." Nigel said.
Sans took a moment to bend over and wheeze silently at the thought, slowly straightening with inaudible laughs shaking his frame.
"Okay… okay, that was funny."
"I said that unironically." The other stated.
"That's why it's funny." Sans gasped before calming down again.
"Okay! Alright! I'm dragon this out long enough!" He proclaimed before tearing off the gloves and wiggling his phalanges. "You've been duped! That's the whole thing! Completely boneboozled!" He snickered before continuing in front of their visibly bluescreened faces.
"I honestly had no idea what a cosplay was before I ran into you. I'd heard of furries and whatnot, but cosplay? Nah."
"Let me process this, hold on." Nigel pressed his palms together, then slowly pointed them at Sans.
"You're saying you're an actual living magic skeleton.. and you're otherwise a normal guy with an actual.. dragon???"
Sans paused, considering how to answer.
"You know what I told you earlier while we just wandered around?"
"Yeah." Osaka replied.
"I didn't make that up. I literally just decided, 'go with the truth, it's already too insane to believe in' and it worked!"
"I'm sorry, but you sound kind of crazy right now." Hesutu explained in concern.
Sans stared at her for a moment.
"I'd feel the same way in your position." He agreed. "Funny as it is right now."
With that, he rolled up his sleeves and the girl promptly fainted.
Everyone yelped in surprise- including Sans as he leapt forward- but thankfully she was caught with blue magic, Soul bursting from her chest in a flare of light as he lowered her to the ground, grimacing as his sight shifted into spectrums he hated seeing.
"Is she okay?" He asked as the two boys stood in place, bewildered.
"Hello?" Sans asked, now aware of the color their Souls were.
"What. The fuck. Was that." Nigel whispered, voice wobbly.
"I told you about it already. You call it telekinesis, but the proper term is blue magic."
"Oh crap your eye- .. thing? Glowy iris?" Osaka started before trailing in confusion.
Sans forced himself to relax. "Eyelight." He explained while blinking.
"You casting a spell or something?" Nigel asked, glancing worriedly at his friend. The skeleton scoffed. "Only humans could do that, not monsters."
"What is it, then?"
"It's, uh.." He struggled to find the words as the other's intense orange Soul demanded his attention.
"Hard to describe." He admitted.
"Flares up sometimes, I end up seeing stuff I don't like seeing." Sans told him as his eyelight ironically flared in blue and yellow.
"Do you see through time..?" Osaka asked. Sans stared for a moment.
"What? No! That's- no. I can't look through time, I just see Souls and magic and I'm not a fan of how it makes me feel."
"Wait, what?"
"Can you see my soul??" The taller pressed. Sans hesitated, less comfortable with this topic as he rocked on his feet.
"Well yeah, that's what I said."
"Does that mean you can see if I'm lying or something?"
"..No? That's not how it works? I just- ah, what the hell."
He gave up and simply pulled out their Souls, both gasping in slight panic.
"That. I see that."
"It's a heart??!" Nigel spluttered in disbelief. "A fucking orange he- how do you even- what???"
"Buddy, calm down. I can't explain anything if you're too busy freaking out." Sans sighed, pocketing his hands.
"That is your Soul. Culmination of your being and whatnot. The orange means you're naturally brave. Actually, the purity of the color is surprising. Most older humans get muddled with age but that one's still pretty vibrant."
"Rustic orange?"
"Yep. I've honestly only seen one Soul brighter orange than that and it was a kid that killed several monsters."
"A kid?!" Nigel burst.
Sans gave him a dry look.
"You humans are dangerous to us monsters."
"Wait, you're actually a mons- THAT'S WHY YOU-" He cut short, putting the pieces together.
"You're actually a scientist??!"
"Was." Sans corrected. "A manaphysicist. It's the study of magic and physics and how they interact. Let me tell you, we don't even know half of it. We could only study the interactions of monster magic and manufactured mana types, and there is a lot more I don't know about."
"O..kay?" Nigel asked, Osaka still silently observing before both skeleton and dragon went stiff.
"You okay? Wait, what's happening?"
Napstablook leaned back, bewildered as Sans stepped away.
"Aim at the ground, just aim at the ground."
"What's going on?" Osaka asked.
"Sneeze." Sans stated quickly, nervous.
"What's wrong with snee-" "Is that going to sneeze fire?" Nigel cut in, alarmed.
"Fire isn't the problem. I've always been a little bit more extreme in that regard." Sans explained awkwardly. There was a pause.
"What? I mean the dragon."
He winced as the illusory scales faded out for a moment, skeledragon huffing. "Nappy, you gotta aim down." Sans ordered before things turned to chaos.
The illusion of flesh and scales vanished and at precisely the same moment, the skeledragon's skull bobbed forward with a loud snap of electricity as a white light erupted from it's jaws and into the asphalt.
A second later and the jaws clicked shut, blinking.
Sans sighed into his hand.
"Oh my God." Hesutu's voice wobbled fearfully.
"Oh cool, you're not asleep anymore." Sans noted sarcastically.
"𝙸'𝚖 𝚜𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚢.. 𝙸 𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗'𝚝 𝚖𝚎𝚊𝚗 𝚝𝚘.." Napstablook murmured.
"Nobody can control sneezing." Sans waved him off as the humans gaped.
"You talk?" The girl squeaked.
"He's not a fan of talking." Sans told her, stepping in front of the bone dragon. "So let me do the talking, alright?"
I kinda wanna talk.
Maybe in a minute.
She shakily stood, dusting herself off and blinking at the floating hearts.
"Alright, you listening?"
"Yeah."
He took the one response and continued, pointing at himself. "I think we're clear on what I am, right?"
"No?" Hesutu asked.
"Living skeleton from Monster Kingdom." Nigel whispered.
"The Underground is the preferred term." Sans added before going on. "That being said, this is Napstablook for the most part." He gestured. "He's shy for a ghost, and looking like a dragon hasn't helped with that."
"He's a dead dragon??"
"No." Sans scoffed despite the upwell of memories. "That's where it gets complicated. He's a ghost, that's another kind of monster that's more on the phantasmic side. Generally incorporeal. Now before I go on there-" He summoned a Blaster, the others backing up in shock.
"The hell is that-"
"I call 'em Blasters." Sans shrugged, leaning on the floating skull.
"Uh."
"Confused, right?"
"Kinda, yeah." Hesutu admitted nervously.
"I get it." Sans nodded sagely, pushing off. "Relax, they're here for a reason."
Checking for understanding, he went on. "Us monsters naturally have magic, unlike you humans, and it's a part of who we are. We have things we call attacks, though the definition is far removed from your definition. They're far more complex. We use attacks as a form of expression, like you use various art forms. At the basis, attacks are an extension of self, some more a part of a monster than others. Basically your hair isn't as much a part of you as your hands are, to put it simply. Got it?"
"..Yeah..? Where is this going?" The girl asked.
"I just wanted to explain that these are an attack. It's a part of me that I can pull out and put away." He gestured to the skull.
"It's honestly creepy." Hesutu muttered.
"I'm aware of that."
Huffing, Sans continued. "Groundwork aside, lemme explain what that has to do with anything. You remember I said Nappy's incorporeal?"
"Yeah." Nigel confirmed uneasily.
"Good. Because this is where it gets into territory I myself don't quite understand. Does this look familiar to you?" He patted the dragon's muzzle while the Blaster drifted closer.
"Wait, they're the same." Nigel realized almost immediately.
"No, the dragon one is bigger-" Hesutu argued.
"Nope, it's the same." Sans corrected. "Well, it is bigger, but not even I know how that happened.." He compared the sizes briefly with some concern.
"Either way, it's the same. That's because this is apparently what happens when a ghost inhabits a Blaster. Just.. sorta gets an entire body." He finished thoughtfully.
"No one has any explanation for that, but this is still me, Nappy just possesses it most of the time."
"Whoa." Osaka stated dully, shocked.
"How does that actually work?" Hesutu questioned as Nigel stared.
"Most of the time? Does he just leave?"
"Wait, does that mean you are possessed?" Hesutu demanded immediately after.
"I mean, technically yes. Part of me's possessed. And no, if he could leave, he would've. Nappy's stuck. But yeah, that's the whole dragon schtick. No dragon, just unknown territory."
"Why do you have.. dragon skulls in the first place?" The girl queried.
Sans shrugged. "It's genetic."
"You're all bones and magic and you have genes?"
"...Just because I resemble what's under your skin doesn't mean I'm just some human's ancient corpse running on magic."
"Oh my God that's not what I meant I'm so sorry-" She apologized frantically, the skeleton snorting.
"Nah, I just get that a lot sometimes. It's just.. old. Do I really look that similar?"
"No, you have a giant head." Osaka stated.
"Thomas!" She snapped. He gave her a look before Sans chuckled.
"Finally, I know your name."
"What? O-oh. You didn't.. you thought my real name was Osaka?"
"Heh, no. Been mentally callin' you that, though. Thomas, huh?"
"Oh, I'm. Sorry. About that. We originally thought it was a whole cosplay thing going on, we introduced ourselves like that b-" "I know, I know. My skull isn't that dense." Sans waved the girl off amiably, surprising a snort out of the taller introvert nearby.
"But if that's you.." Nigel brought back the previous topic, pointing at the dragon.
"And also a ghost.. does that mean you can feel possessed? Or I mean.. no, can he control all of you? Possess all of you? Shit, this isn't making any sense-"
"You mean he can possess me in entirety and not just the full-bodied Blaster?" Sans suggested.
Before the other could even reply, Napstablook surged to his feet with a whine, possessed sockets wide in panic.
"𝙾𝚑 𝚗𝚘 𝚗𝚘 𝚗𝚘 𝚗𝚘 𝚗𝚘 𝚗𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝'𝚜 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚘𝚔𝚊𝚢. 𝙽𝚘. 𝙿𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚎, 𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚏 𝚊 𝚑𝚞𝚖𝚊𝚗 𝚘𝚛 𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚒𝚜 𝙽𝚞𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟷 𝚘𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚗𝚜𝚎 𝙸 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍- 𝙸 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚗𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛- 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚒𝚜 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢, 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚋𝚊𝚍-" He broke into another anxious whine, silently begging Sans to help, lifting a talon up and down repeatedly.
The skeleton blinked in concern before reaching over and hesitantly petting the skull on the back, Napstablook blinking and struggling not to give in to the new sensation.
"Relax, they don't understand or know."
"I uh. Didn't know that was sensitive, yeah. I'm sorry." Nigel muttered.
"I'm not the most familiar with the ins and outs of ghost laws either, but I understand that outright intentional malignant possession of a sapient being is an extreme offense. I get the reasoning behind it, that's a violation of utmost privacy and psychological upheaval at least."
Stepping away, Sans considered the question.
"As for the other thing.. I'm pretty sure he technically could, but what would be the point? He has a hard time figuring out how to walk with this body, why add another to the mix?"
"So you're relying on the fact that he doesn't want to." Nigel summarized.
"...You think he can override my ability to control myself?" Sans asked incredulously. "And that'd he'd want to?"
"Well- no- that's not what I was saying-"
"Then what were you saying? Because that's what it sounded like."
He stuttered over his words to find an excuse, stammering. "I mean, he could want to walk on two legs or sneak in a crowd and not be suspicious like you did-"
"He doesn't want to interact with people. He's still learning how four legs work from living his entire life without being affected by gravity or needing balance whatsoever and you think he'd want to downgrade to two legs? Oh, I haven't even mentioned something some freaky leviathan octopus in the ocean did to my legs-"
Sans kicked off his shoes and shoved up a pant leg, showing off his clawed foot. "Absolutely no reason to do this. I had feet like yours and this Cthulhu decided that no! I need to be fucking modified against my damn will because that's okay, apparently. I can't wear shoes for damn anymore! I like shoes, y'know! And you have the bright idea that Nappy will just decide he wants to walk on two legs I can barely balance on? My weight's on my phalanges here now! You think dragons and whatever are nice? They don't respect others for shit! And humans think monsters are what they need to worry about. Nah, nah, I'm more worried about Y'zatae 'helping' someone else."
He rubbed his skull, turning in a circle as he breathed. "The whole reason I was ever at this place was because I didn't want to go back and deal with the damn giant eel that reveres us like some prophet because- oh damn it, because of some dragon that died over a century- no- thousands of years ago!" He growled irritably at the thought before sinking to the ground, unexpectedly emotional.
"It's just.. hoop after hoop to jump through and it's like everything is out to fuck me over.." He mumbled. Napstablook hesitantly reached out and sort of hugged him with a wing.
"...𝙷𝚊𝚛𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚔𝚎𝚎𝚙 𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚢.. 𝚜𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚢.." He explained softly, avoiding looking at them.
"I'm sorry." Hesutu replied just as quietly.
"Why.. tell us all this anyway?" Nigel asked.
Sighing heavily, Sans collected himself. "Because it's common decency to tell the truth. And unfortunately, this truth is a long and complicated one, especially when explaining to humans who know even less than.. well, less."
"Then why bother? You honestly could have just left."
Now both skeleton and ghost possessed skeledragon stared in confusion.
"Why? We're not against sharing the truth, and that's just.. rude.. humans really just do that?"
Yeah, we're assholes.
"I mean, people can understand if something is hard to explain or not worth dealing with constantly, and there's this thing called oversharing?" Hesutu chuckled nervously.
Sans blinked. "That is honestly.. I know what oversharing is, but there's a difference between awkwardly personal and just strange situations that can't afford misinformation."
She opened her mouth, then slowly shut it again.
"Other than the weird bad day, you're pretty cool honestly." Thomas rocked on his heels, trying to change the topic.
"Thanks." Sans smiled halfheartedly.
"I mean, if you don't mind, we could make a documentary of your situation one day?" He offered shyly.
"Thomas what the hell?" Nigel demanded as Hesutu spluttered in shock.
Sans snorted. "I get what you're thinking, but I don't want my life end up as some movie. The sentiment is understood, though." With that, he rose to his feet, hovering his shoes back to his feet with a touch of blue magic before huffing, shoving his sleeves down and pocketing his hands.
"I just wanted to try and keep in contact, you know? This is a lot of stuff and I just." Thomas sighed, rubbing his arm.
Sans shrugged. "If that's what you want, we can share phone numbers."
"You have a phone??!" Hesutu cried.
"Yep. And last I remembered, our devices can in fact text yours. Don't know if we've been upgraded to your satellites yet, though."
"Wait, wouldn't that require, like.. getting your phone upgraded?" Nigel asked.
"Well yes." Sans pulled out his device. "It does, but our technology is a lot more flexible and versatile than yours. An update like that can easily be coded in automatically from transmission over your satellites. Our phones are built to transmit almost constantly through layers of rock and dense grammaryé interference. It can pick up anything." He explained while adding the human's number to his contacts.
"What's grammar.. i?" Hesutu tried to pronounce. "Grammaryé." Sans corrected. "It's a technical term for magic."
"Oh, it sounded like that term was mana."
"There is more than one word." Sans pointed out while sending a text.
"Holy shit I think it worked-" Thomas blurted, hunching over his device.
"Why am I Wheelie Thomas?"
Sans smirked.
"Oh my God." Hesutu realized.
"There it is."
"Because he has wheelies?!"
"Wait, that's it?"
"It has a nice ring to it, c'mon." Sans argued lightheartedly, watching Nigel started snickering quietly before staring at something at the horizon in surprise.
"What kind of names do you normally have in your contacts?" The girl questioned, then noticed his lack of attention.
"What are you looking at?" Nigel asked as everyone followed the gaze.
"Something happening over there. Please tell me you see it."
"... There's nothing there." Thomas told him.
"Damnit." Sans hissed, skeledragon still staring as he looked away. "I was hoping it was just a human light show or something."
"You can see stuff we don't?" The taller queried.
Sans blinked, yellow sparking from his sockets. "I wish I couldn't, honestly. Save me a lot of trouble."
"Then don't go towards the light?" Thomas suggested.
"It's become my responsibility to deal with the damn light because oh no I woke up one dragon-" Sans cut short, scowling.
"Sorry. I'm just.. annoyed."
"Mood." Thomas concluded.
"On the other hand, everything here's been a crazy adventure." A new voice spoke up.
"Frisk are you seriously doing this." Sans deadpanned at the still summoned Blaster.
"What." Nigel stated almost just as flatly.
The skull turned upside down, laughter evident in it's red eyelights. "Okay, Sans just keeps pretending I don't exist. I'm basically the secret spirit without a spare body so I'm just kinda there. Bored. It gets boring. Besides, you left it hanging out, how can I not just be a Blaster- it's cool!" He addressed Sans during the last half of his spiel, practically begging.
"Has it occurred to you that explaining Nappy is hard enough?"
"I can explain myself!"
".. No, you can't."
"You haven't seen me try!"
"Because you never did."
"I'm sorry, you had two ghosts?" Nigel questioned.
"I'm actually a dead human." Frisk corrected with an audible grin, Sans facepalming with a dull clack.
"You're.. dead?" Hesutu gestured.
"Yep, my body just went kaput and braindead because another human spirit possessed me and Asriel shoved my Soul into Sans? So I'm just. Here. Vibing. It's a lot better than being alive, I was a midget and selectively mute and hated it. Now I can possess epic laser skulls and sort of be a skeledragon!"
The humans gawked in disbelief as Sans stared.
In the pause, Sans finally threw up his arms. "Y'know what? I'm done. I quit. I'm not explaining this one, I'm taking a nap." He collapsed against the skeledragon's ribs, throwing his hood over his face and crossing his arms pointedly.
"You'll just wake up in the bone dragon anyway." Frisk pointed out.
"I physically do not have it in me to care." The skeleton snarkily replied.
"...Well that's happening now I guess." Frisk would have shrugged if he wasn't just a floating skull.
Napstablook blinked several times in confusion, then slowly curled around the other and relaxed.
Frisk slowly turned to look at the others.
"I bet you're still confused."
"How is your consciousness..?" Nigel couldn't finish.
"Why do you look angry?" Hesutu tried.
"I look angry? How?"
"Red eye..s?"
"Oh. That's just magic stuff. My Soul was really Determined, and that's red, so it's just my color now. My favorite color isn't even red, it's dark teal."
"You know what this color stuff represents?" Thomas asked.
"I do! Like your Soul is.. a different shade, but it looks like the Perseverance Soul! And Sans already explained you're Bravery and you! Uh. It's kind of between the blues, but I think that's Integrity."
"What does that mean? The perseverance and integrity stuff."
"I.. don't really know? I just know what Determination is like. It's probably not that important anyway, Souls only do stuff around magic and there's not much of that down here. The main thing with Determination was created by weird science stuff by accident, too."
"Are you sure you're human?" Nigel questioned.
Frisk blinked at him. "Where'd that question come from?"
"I'm sorry, I just don't know how someone could encounter monsters, die, and end up.. in a skeleton I guess? Consciousness doesn't just transfer elsewhere in death."
"It doesn't really, not on it's own. I was just too Determined to die so my Soul didn't shatter. The other thing is apparently human Souls are the ones that don't always break when they die, but that's apparently a whole thing that happens when there's a lot of magic? And there's a lot of magic in the Underground. It had weather and climates in there and glowing plants. There's literally a glowing blue flower that just records voices and echoes them back, they're so cool! And the pine trees in Snowdin glow and the whole place is a winter wonderland all the time and- the Underground is cool. It's really cool. Maybe other people can visit it one day."
"That does sound pretty nice." Hesutu noted. "I'd show you all the cool stuff myself." Frisk said seriously.
"What about all that uh. Cthulhu stuff he mentioned earlier? I was still wondering about that." Nigel asked.
Frisk winced. "That, uh. Sans wants to get his dad out of the Void and stuff. And we were told a dragon named after the Aztec God of rainbows or something could help with that, but literally no one knows where he is. We've been hopping from one sleeping dragon, giant bird, and sea serpent to another looking for someone who knows where Quetzalcoatl is but our only lead so far is this uh. A sea snake in Haiti, I think? His name is Damballah and he was friends with Quetzalcoatl before all Old Ones went to sleep in caves. Kinda cool."
"That didn't answer anything."
"Yeah, that wasn't what we asked." Hesutu agreed.
"Oh crap, you're right, Mrs Cthulhu! She was basically this huge, huge octopus in the deep ocean with thousands of tiny tentacles that we woke up. The ends of her tentacles had teeth! I'm pretty sure she was actually bigger than the entire mountain of the Underground. I'm not exaggerating here." He stared intently for a moment to get the point across.
"But yeah, we woke her up, she wasn't great at English or talking but said she'd help while dragging us underwater and when we woke up, dragon was a lot bigger and Sans had the claws and stuff…. And we just had the memories of a dead dragon for reasons, but that's actually been helpful, Saecshiun knew Damballah and where he lived and that's how we figured out it was Haiti!"
Grinning at their faces, Frisk snickered. "Isn't that crazy?"
"I'm sorry..?" "How? How do you get.. someone else's memories just implanted into your brain? And why??" Nigel questioned almost existentially.
"I.. uh. I kind of know why and maybe kind of how, but it's really. Personal. Don't wanna talk about it. You get what I mean?"
"It's personal? It sounds like an anime." The other scoffed.
"I know, right? Undyne and Alphys would love it."
"Who?" Hesutu asked.
"They're fish and lizard monsters that love anime. And are dating. And I absolutely ship it."
"Can you even prove any of this? It's just a little too out there. Especially telling just.. strangers." Hesutu pointed out.
Frisk huffed, thinking. "I mean, we could probably take you to Moyoletic. Would a giant sea serpent be proof enough?"
"A what now?"
"Sea serpent. I'm pretty sure that's what she is. She just looks like a giant eel. She also uh. Acted like someone in a cult. Towards us. Yeah.. I hate it. It's creepy…." He stared at a section of burnt asphalt from earlier before lighting up again.
"Do you want to meet her? She doesn't hurt humans!" He spun towards the seemingly asleep skeletal dragon. "We should do that! She probably wants to meet more humans anyway!"
It pushed itself back up, eyelights now a strange blue with flecks of yellow and silver at the edges, glaring.
"Why not? We can just go and come back! It'll be like twenty minutes!"
It sighed with a clear difference in tone, rubbing its face with a talon, producing a dull scraping noise before regarding the confused trio, its jaw actually moving when it spoke.
"𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝?"
"Wait-" Hesutu started as they recognized the familiar but strange voice.
"How-"
"𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰. 𝐈𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲'𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩, 𝐈 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲." He shrugged, a flash of blue traveling down the skeletal reptile's length.
"You sound so different." The girl noted in curiosity. He just shrugged again.
"Do you want to meet Letty?" Frisk asked again.
"Letty?"
"Short for Moyoletic."
"That's actually kind of cute." She commented as Nigel spoke up.
"How would we get all the way there?"
The skeledragon suddenly flashed blue, then appeared as a serpentine creature once more.
"𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬."
"...Holy shit you can fly??!"
"Those wings are solid?!"
He reached over with a talon and grabbed Nigel around the waist. "𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝." He stated before letting go.
"I thought it wasn't really there like a magical hologram or something." Thomas explained.
"Me too." Nigel agreed.
"𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡." He shifted around, fingers wiggling before the illusion abruptly vanished around the hand, revealing phalanges beneath.
"𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭."
"And swimming is easier with it too!" Frisk darted through the air towards the tail, nudging the paddle shape and then looking up.
"We've been absent all day actually, do you think we've worried her?"
The dragon hesitated. "𝐖𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭.."
"This eel won't try to eat us or anything, will she?" Thomas asked.
"No, she eats whale sharks and stuff. She likes to stare at people when we talk to them, though." Frisk explained while slowly rolling.
"I can't get dizzy apparently."
Sans scoffed at that, a wing batting at the floating skull.
"Where'd your.. other body go?" Nigel noticed the disappearance.
"𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰." He answered before all three humans found themselves weightlessly hovering off the ground.
Hesutu flailed wildly in panic before grabbing Nigel's arm in a death grip.
"What's going on?!"
Sans didn't answer, instead floating them over to his back while Frisk rose to catch Thomas.
"We're going to fly!" The former human exclaimed.
"Wait, we can't-" Nigel cut short as all three screamed, dragon surging forward and erupting into the air, wings pounding as the magic skull followed shortly after.
They left the convention behind, humans looking up to see a non-avian creature soaring above them as it headed for the shore. It wasn't long until Nigel was hollering in excitement, Thomas gripping horns and yelling as Hesutu kept screaming.
Only a few minutes later, they were circling above the water, lacking thermals to keep gliding smoothly any longer, now not far from the rolling waves as the dragon peered into the water.
Suddenly, a long, greyish creature breached nearby, coming back down with a loud splash.
"ѕαє¢ѕнιυη! ∂яαgση тнαт ιѕ ησт, ι ƒєαяє∂ уσυ нα∂ gσηє ση ωιтнσυт мє!"
Sliding into the water with a great spray, Sans replied as the two humans shrunk from the water.
"𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐈 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤."
"му αρσℓσgιєѕ." She dove deeper and returned, lidless eyes peering at the passengers.
"уσυ вяιηg нυмαηѕ?"
"𝐘𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮." He indicated, watching as Hesutu waved confusedly.
"I don't.. hear anything."
"Yeah, we just hear English because something magic, but she doesn't even speak out loud." Frisk explained.
"αн, нυмαη ѕσυℓ мιη∂. ι ѕєє уσυ."
"Kinda hard not to, I'm a giant floating skull." He grinned much to Thomas's bewilderment.
"𝐀𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐲'𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲, 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤." Sans spoke, turning to swim towards shore.
"They just got here!" Frisk complained hotly.
"I mean, I thought we'd stay like five minutes or something." Thomas agreed.
"No please, get me out of here- I can't swim." Hesutu hissed frantically.
"𝐎𝐡, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐦?" Sans regarded her with a mischievous glint in his illusory eyes, a faint hint of glowing eyelights beneath.
"𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐲?"
"NO PLEASE-" She screamed as he tilted in the water, scrabbling at scales.
Nigel yelped as she kicked off of him and managed to climb to the dragon's head, clinging on to the faint knobs in terror.
"𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐨." He winced as a foot jabbed him.
He shared a look with Frisk, three minds debating solutions before both glanced at Moyoletic. The eel returned the gaze in curiosity before Frisk spoke.
"Hey guys, I can take you back if you let go of Sans."
"Please." The girl begged.
Frisk drifted down low enough for Nigel to step onto the skull's snout, watching him.
The human hesitantly leapt from the dragon's back and joined Thomas on the horns before the skull came up and clamped it's jaw around Hesutu's waist, startling a scream from her as she was ripped away from her perch.
The skull then zoomed off, heading for shore. Sans sighed in relief, sinking comfortably into the water. "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞." He mumbled into the water.
"∂ι∂ тнσѕє нυмαηѕ υρѕєт уσυ?" Moyoletic queried.
"𝐍𝐨.. 𝐈'𝐦 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧." He sighed, waiting.
When Frisk had finally dropped them off where they had come from, the former human had a moment to say goodbye before the Blaster was dissolved back into magic, the dragon flinching as a consciousness slammed back into place, slightly disoriented by the abrupt change.
"𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭.. 𝐠𝐨. 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞." Sans explained as he turned to swim for what would likely be several days. Moyoletic silently joined him, eternally patient and understanding.
With that, the dragon that was not and the adoring serpent of the sea began to leave Florida and it's madness behind, finally moving beyond the land that was America.
They left with a few humans understanding more than most, with a most unlikely trio now privy to knowledge only a little more than a dozen others in the world now knew.
