Chapter 6
Clarke
Behind me walks Octavia, Finn, Murphy and Jasper, chattering amongst each other.
I look back and see Finn put a purple flower in Octavia's hair and she smiles up to him. I can't help but frown a little.
"Now that, my friend, is game." I roll my eyes at Jaspers comment to Murphy. We shouldn't be stopping, we need to find some food in Mount Weather.
"That, my friend is poison sumac." Murphy smirks to himself. The only way he could've known that is if he studied plants. I guess he did his research.
Octavia brushes her hands frantically through her hair to get the bright purple flower out, "What? It is?"
I take note of how there hasn't been a single animal. That can't be a good sign.
"The flowers aren't poisonous. They're medicinal, calming, actually." I stop walking and fully turn to them.
"His family grows all the pharmaceuticals on the ark." I guessed it, thank you Jasper.
"Hey, guys, would you try to keep up?"
"Come on, Clarke. How do you block all this out?" They walk closer to me and don't pay attention to where they're slipping. Hopefully one of them falls and that'll set them on track.
"Well, it's simple. I wonder why haven't we seen any animals? Maybe it's because there are none. Maybe we've already been exposed to enough radiation to kill us. Sure is pretty, though. Come on." I turn around and walk away from them, but I can still hear Octavia.
"Someone should slip her some poison sumac." They snort at her comment but I don't take it personal.
"I got to know what you two did to get busted." Finn tells the two peas in a pod behind him.
"Sumac is not the only herb in the garden, if you know what I mean." I can't help but chuckle at Murphy.
"Someone forgot to replace what we took." Jasper adds.
"Someone has apologized a thousand times." Idiots.
"How about you, Octavia? What'd they get you in for?" I'm sure Jasper realized he shouldn't have asked that when she stays silent for a little. I spot something in the distance and quietly run to it.
"Being born." Them being so far behind, Octavia leaves them and runs to me where I'm crouching.
They all come up behind me and I gesture for them to be quiet.
There, right in front of me is what they call a deer. Just like the books, in all its glory. Do you know what this means? It means radiation hasn't killed the animals so earth is most likely survivable.
"No animals, huh?" I look over at Finn with a smile on my face when he starts moving forward. He accidentally steps on a stick, breaking it in half and making a loud noise.
Alerted, the deer jolts upwards and looks over our direction. We all gasp and move slightly backwards when it does, surprised.
The deer has two heads, which from what I know isn't normal and blood and other gut looking things is in between the two heads.
The animal runs away, but I still can't get the image of it out of my head.
Abby
"The chancellor has lost a lot of blood. If only they found him sooner, damn it." I look to the screen which shows his insides, where we're trying to work on, "if only somebody found him sooner."
"He's waking up." Jackson brings to my attention that the chancellor has woke up.
"Increase the anesthesia." Jackson looks at me as if I'm crazy.
"We used way too much blood and anesthesia. We're way over the line." Jackson looks to the other nurses as if to prove his point.
"Your chancellor is going into shock." If we don't give him what he needs, he could die. And that would mean we need a new chancellor and the next person in line is Kane. God knows what the evil son of a bitch could do.
"You're asking me to break the law."
"Fine. I'll do it myself." I walk over to the anesthesia and blood donations, "let them come after me."
Kane
"Excuse me, sir." I look to the commander walking up to me, "You asked to be notified if there was news. The chancellor is still in surgery, but we have ID'd the shooter. Bellamy Blake is the only person on the ark unaccounted for." He shows me a picture of the shooter on a screen of technology.
"Who is he?" I stare at the picture longer, not really recognizing him.
"He's no one, a janitor. We're still working up a profile, but his motive for going to earth is clear."
"Sister. I remember." He shows me a picture of Octavia Blake, Bellamy's sister, "her mother kept her hidden for almost 16 years, nearly a record." He gives me a weird look, "what is it, Commander Shumway? Spit it out."
"We could start now. As chancellor pro tempore, you can give the order to start reducing the population." I ponder his words for a minute. He's right, I am temporarily the chancellor, but I cant just kill a bunch of innocent people if I still don't know if the earth is survivable or not.
"Not yet."
"Sir, we're wasting time. Removing the 100 from the population only buys us another month. Engineering needs more than that to fix those systems, if they can fix them at all."
"You have my answer, commander. Enough. If we're gonna kill hundreds of innocent people, we're gonna do it by the book. Is that clear?" He nods his head, "in the meantime, I want to know who helped this janitor get on that drop ship because he sure as hell didn't do it by himself. Seems we have a traitor in our midst, commander, and the 100 have an assassin in theirs."
I calmly walk past the commander and instantly think about what we're going to do about the oxygen problem.
