Chapter 24
It was the day for Leila to be held in court. She was escorted by several Guards with Alex beside her. It was not like Alex was allowed to be with her but no Galaxians could take him down so they just let him be. He did not attack any of them. All he did was to accompany her to make sure she arrived there unharmed.
After all, her hands were chained together and she was blindfolded. She knew she had arrived at the arena when she heard the voices of people.
She was told to stand in the middle of the room where she was surrounded by the Galaxians. In front of her was where all the Heads sat. She couldn't see anything but she knew where she was. It had been 9 years but nothing had changed since then.
She heard them asking about Aaron. Everyone was present, even Pierre but Aaron was not. She just hoped that nothing had happened to him.

On the other hand, Lucas, Aaron, Jacob and Ryan headed to the courtroom. Lucas was having difficulty catching up with the rest as he had to limp since his leg had been shot. He didn't blame Aaron for shooting him. After all, he could have been caught if he wasn't.
Aaron actually explained to him why he shot it. In reality, he was not responsible for charging his sin but the man whom he knocked out in front of the room back then.
In order to keep everything in order, Lucas had to be injured.
So, shooting him in the leg worked as an equivalent exchange for one's punishment. If a Head or someone as powerful relayed the punishment for the sinner before being held in court, then it replaced the actual punishment he had to face. Also, it would be much more difficult to sense his presence. Aaron knew as he faced a similar case with Leila and ended up losing his arm in exchange.
Aaron noticed that Lucas was suffering so he slowed down and supported him by placing his arm over his shoulder so that it was easier for him to walk. Lucas was quite surprised by his sudden change in behavior. He had never been treated this way before and it seemed rather nice of Aaron to do that.
"I thought you hated me"
Aaron glanced at him and shrugged. "I never hated you," he replied, "But I never liked you either."
Lucas rolled his eyes and groaned in disappointment. A great way to ruin the mood.

The four of them arrived at the back entrance of the courtroom. They quietly sneaked in and pushed themselves through the waves of people to reach to the front in order to get a clear view. There, Lucas saw his one and only love, standing in the middle of the hall, covered in bruises and blindfolded.
His heart fell. He blamed himself for not being able to do anything. He wanted to head out there and just do something but was stopped by Ryan.
"Not now, Lucas."
He bit his lips and just watched her from afar.

All the buzzing and noises stopped immediately after one of the Heads hammered the bell. It meant that the session had begun.
"All rise up from your seats and respect your Honor who had arrived to the venue," one of the Heads commanded to which everyone followed.
The jury headed to the middle of the row where the Heads were seated and raised his hand to indicate everyone to sit down.
"This would be the second time we are meeting, Angel," he said in a hoarse voice.
Leila smiled and bowed at him.
The Jury cleared his throat and held up the stack of papers placed in front of him. He scanned the words on the papers and read it out loud enough for everyone in the hall to hear.
"Leila Song, the Angel and the current Guardian of the Night, had been accused of kidnapping the Guardian of the Day, Lucas Huang."
The moment Lucas heard that, he looked at Aaron who shook his head in disappointment. It was all fake facts but she had to go through such torture for that. He clenched his fist as he listened to the rest of the speech.
"Previously, Leila Song had also been held for murdering Tyler, the Guardian of the Night, whose body has yet to be found."
Lucas noticed Aaron tensing up. Aaron looked down as his face darkened. He knew that Aaron was also holding it in so he waited patiently. Patiently for the right time.
"There had also been reports that you have disobeyed your punishments by leaving your office several times without approval and failure to perform your duty as the Guardian of the Night but there had not been any clear evidence for that. However, you had denied Heads' requests to follow them and also remained silent during the interrogation process. In Galax, performing such activities obediently are part of the law. Despite knowing this from the previous experience, you chose to continue doing it thus you have broken the law."
The moment the Jury finished reading, the people in the room started roaring in anger.
"She should be executed!"
"We do not feel safe around her. She could be planning to kill anyone at any moment!"
Lucas, Ryan and Jacob were shocked by such reaction from the Galaxians. Lucas glanced over and noticed the Heads were enjoying the moment and believed it was set-up.
"It's not set-up," Aaron said as he knew what Lucas was thinking, "That's how things work in Galax."
Lucas looked at the Heads in disgust and gritted his teeth. His eyes then shifted to Leila who was just standing there obediently. He wondered why she was willing to go through such things alone.
The Jury hit the hammer three times to signal for silence. He stood up and the Heads followed his action. It meant that he would was ready to announce her charges.
"Death it shall be then."
Everyone in the room cheered as the announcement was made.
"What nonsense?!"
Lucas shouted from his seat and everyone turned their heads to his direction, including Leila. She heard his voice and started panicking. She prayed it was not him and hoped that no one would actually recognize him.
Lucas walked through the swarm of people so that he could be seen clearly. Only he managed to enter the holding area as Aaron and the rest were blocked by the other Guardians. As Lucas was about to head towards Leila, the Guards blocked him.
"Get out of my way!" he snarled at them but they refused to do so.
"You must be Lucas."
The moment his name was heard, Leila's throat went dry. She could not believe why he was here. She wanted to make sure he was safe and that nothing would happen to him although deep down she knew it was the direct opposite.
Lucas turned to their direction and glared at them.
"That's right. I am Lucas Huang."
"Glad to see you in one piece," one of the Heads told him in which he could sense the sarcasm in it. After all, he should be dead in his record. But it was not the time to care about that.
"She didn't do anything wrong."
They looked at each other and then back at Lucas.
"We know but we don't care."
The Jury shook his head and smirked as he found it amusing. Lucas sensed that something was wrong. It seemed like the Jury, the man who should be maintaining the balance, was with them all along.
"That's how we treat outsiders who get involved in our lives too much."
Everything he had thought about Galax had shattered and was replaced by only one word. Unfair. Lucas was disgusted by each and every one of them. It was not set-up. It was not a plan. It was what they wanted all along. He got it. He finally knew what Aaron meant.
It was indeed a sad world.

"You should leave, young lad."
The Jury ordered him sternly but received laughter in return. Lucas looked at him amused and licked his lips.
"If not? Are you going to tear my limps apart?" he asked mockingly which shocked everyone in the court. No one had dared to defy the Jury before. The Jury controlled the entire Galax and made the decisions. But all those did not seem to stop Lucas from staying. He came here to make sure Leila was safe and he was definitely not leaving. He would live up to his promise and that was to never leave anywhere without her.
"You want me to leave? Make me," he challenged them.
Aaron clicked his tongue and quickly jumped out of his seat as he noticed the Guards heading towards Lucas. He knew that in his current condition, Lucas would never be able to withstand the pressure.
Jacob and Ryan followed him as well. They took cover for Lucas as he ran towards Leila as fast as he could with his injured leg.
Just as he was about to reach her, a Guard slashed a sword in between them. The blindfold of hers tore in half and the first thing she saw was him.
"Lucas!" she called out desperately as the Guard pulled him away. He was having difficulty escaping from the grip due to his leg injury. He cursed as he could not move around easily.
Aaron kicked the guard from the back and helped Lucas up. He thanked him and quickly rushed to Leila. He did not have any time to spare.
"Are you ok?" she asked worriedly when he tripped into her arms. She glanced at Aaron who stared at them for a moment before heading back towards attacking the other Guards.
"What are you doing here? It's not safe here."
Lucas had no comeback to make. He decided to ignore what she said and looked around trying to find an exit. Just as Leila was about to say something, he took out his gun and shot the guard behind her.
"I'm not going anywhere without you."
That was not helping her in any way. She wanted him to be safe but now he got caught in this mess because he was trying to save her.
The Jury was getting rather impatient with the entire situation.
"Change of decision. All intruders are to be killed."
