↷ TWENTY TWO
''Storytime..''
Devin Greene and Hannah Baker giggled as Kat smiles and continues, ''Storytimes of your first kiss.''
It was around late seven going at eight in the evening, and the sun that was setting had it's rays peeking through Hannah's bedroom curtains.
Kat sat with Hannah on her bed while Devin sat criss cross on the inflatable bed set on the floor.
''Oh,'' Hannah raised a hand while Devin took a sip of her drink. ''I haven't had one.''
Ripping the glass rim of the cup away from her lips, Devin's cheeks were blown full of liquid as she breaks her neck to look back at Hannah, her eyes as wide as Kat's.
''Get out.''
Hannah scoffs. ''I can't. This is my house.''
''But-'' Devin stammers after swallowing her beverage. ''I'm pretty sure you've had the chance to-''
She pursed her lips. ''What I've been offered in my lifetime, isn't exactly the kindest.''
Devin and Kat furrows their brows.
Kat asks, ''What's that suppose to mean?''
The frizzy curled brunette waves them off. ''A story for another time. I promise.''
Devin's lips reached a gentle smile, nodding at the consideration.
''Um, okay,'' Kat turns to Devin and cocks a brow. ''You, Devs?''
Licking the liquid off of her lips, she smacks them apart and confesses, ''Uh, Justin Foley.''
''Get the fuck out!'' Hannah and Kat exclaimed as one, with wide eyes and jaws agape.
She nods her head. ''Yeah, we were our first kiss back in third grade.''
The ecstatic smile that conquered Kat's features had dropped in an instant and in exchange, furrowed her brows.
However, none of the other girls noticed because Hannah had giggled, ''Well? What was it like? How'd it happened?''
Devin had kept smiling as she looked up towards the ceiling, deep in thought of memory.
''I was uh, those girls that always doodled my crushs name at the corner of my notebooks,'' She chuckles softly and looks back down at her lap where she fiddled with her fingers. ''And one day, Stephanie Bishop-'' Devin looked up with furrowed brows and pointed a finger at Kat, ''You remember her, right, Kat?''
Though Kat kept her brows furrowed, as if she was lost in a daze that Devin nor Hannah took notice of.
''Biggest bitch ever,'' Devin continues, exchanging glances over at Hannah. ''Told anybody in sight someone's crush. So when she saw what was in my notebook, word went around, but a lot of people thought it was a rumor because of how Justin had looked back then.''
Shrugging her shoulders, Hannah asks, ''What do you mean?''
''Are you kidding me?'' Kat piped up, her features remaining and her tone coming off flat as she remarks, ''Kid was a sandy blonde Harry Potter mixed with Jack Johnson.''
Devin nods her head, ''Yeah, nobody liked him. But, Justin got curious, and he wanted to see me. So all the girls in our grade had pulled me away at lunch while all the guys had pulled him to corner us together in the courtyard. He straight up had asked me if I liked him and since I was ballsy back then, I told him, yes.''
Devin couldn't help but giggle at the memory. ''The guys encouraged him beforehand that if I said yes, he had to kiss me. So he did.''
''Was he good?''
Devin jerks back. ''Good? Kid tried to shove his tongue down my throat before his lips even touched mine.''
Hannah had laughed at this with Devin following along shortly but Kat was still not responsive. It was setting the whole mood off.
''Hey, Kat,'' Devin calls. ''You okay? I mean, if you weren't comfortable with that, it's okay to tell me.''
She forced a meek smile and tells her, ''Forget about comfortable, more like juicy.''
''Who was your first kiss, Kat?'' Hannah asked while switching into a different position on her bed. She began to lay down and propped an elbow and rested her head on her hand to keep her up.
Grabbing her cup from the nightstand, Kat starts pushing herself off of the bed and tells them, ''I'll tell you once I get my refill.''
Hannah's parents were still running their local Pharmacy at the hour and they were doing a late night shift considering Hannah was having company over, so Kat didn't have to make a pit stop for any small talk on her way towards the kitchen.
Kat had dropped her cup on the counter and reached into the back pocket of her jeans and fished out her phone, dialing Jeffery Atkins phone number.
''Hello?'' She greets questioningly, her voice small and hushed. She looks around to see if any of the others had followed her.
''Kat?'' He groans. His tone was hoarsed and raspy, as if he just woken up. ''What's up?''
''I need you to know something and I need you to not tell Devin or anyone and not act out.''
He was silence, but the line wasn't. There was ruffling heard, motion was going on.
Jeff Atkins had pushed himself off of his bed and asked with a clear of his throat, ''What is it?''
× × ×
A couple of hours have passed. It was two in the morning, where Kat and Devin shared the inflatable air mattress while Hannah had her bed to herself.
''Guys?'' Hannah whispered.
''Yeah,'' Kat responds while Devin only turns to face Kat and Hannah, letting a leg fall on top of Kat.
''Is Devin up?''
''It's summertime, boo,'' Devin mumbles. ''Where your sleep schedule could be fucked up for the last days of school.''
Kat shakes her head. ''I shouldn't be up.''
Furrowing her brows, Hannah let's her head fall to the side. ''Why?''
''Graduation,'' Kat briefly informs. ''I gotta get up for senior brunch, then the ceremony.''
''How far away are you moving to?'' Hannah asked.
''New York far.''
''Oh,'' Hannah winced.
''Don't worry,'' Devin reaches out for Kat's curls and smile through tired eyes. ''We'll make you're the prettiest senior there.''
Kat scoffs. ''Honey, I was already winning that.''
Devin woke up a little more when Hannah, Kat and herself bursted with laughter.
Soon, the laughter digressed and the quietness consumed them again.
''Hey, Devs?'' Kat pipes up, striking a new conversation.
She hums.
''Do you see yourself being with Jeff for a while?''
She shakes her head. ''I don't chew more than I can swallow.''
Hannah looks at her. ''What's that suppose to mean?''
''It means,'' She breathes out as she sits up. ''I don't think ahead of something so good because I could be setting myself up for disaster.''
Hannah sat up as well. ''How can things go so bad when you both are so crazy about each other?''
She shrugs her shoulders. ''That all could stop one day. At least for one of us it will.''
''Jesus, that was deep,'' Kat hissed.
Devin laughs her off gently. ''I wasn't trying to. It's just a scary thought.''
''Would you say,'' Kat stops herself, playing with a loose string from her basic white tee. ''Would you say that you love Jeff?''
Although it wasn't intentional, nor was it all that funny, a scoffed slipped past her. ''That's a strong word for a girl who just turned sixteen.''
''It's just a question, Devin,'' Kat had retaliated with a bitter distaste to her tone.
''And it was just an answer, Katherine,'' Devin snapped back as salty as Kat did.
''Woah,'' Hannah calls out. ''What is happening?''
Devin remained quiet, but the lingering amount of eye contact on Kat was enough to communicate the same thought Hannah asked aloud.
Kat sighs, bringing both hands up to her face and rubbing away the tiredness away from her features. ''Nothing. I'm just a little stressed out.''
Feeling a little more calmer, Devin assures her. ''Well, don't. You're going to look beautiful tomorrow with your hair done and that fancy shmancy white dress you bought. It's going to be amazing.''
A small smile tugged on Kat's lips.
That was one thing; it was hard to ever hate or be envious of Devin Greene. She was so encouraging and welcoming, how can you not not like her?
''You know what we should do,'' Devin begins to suggest as she reaches out for her phone. The device was plugged into an outlet not that far from the inflatable mattress.
Unplugging her phone from her charger, her fingers began swiping through furiously from her passcode to her YouTube, as she finishes. ''We should sing throwback songs.''
''What are you suggesting?'' Hannah asked as Devin already had a song loading.
''You know very well, who you are,'' Devin sang over the low audio of The One by Tamar Braxton.
''You're the only one,'' Hannah jumped up from her bed, boldly singing along with Tamar Braxton. ''You've got my heart.''
''And you've had a few, boy one too many,'' Kat sang, pushing herself up so she could be sitting up with the others. ''But I'm the only one, to make you whole.''
Devin got off of the bed and stood, and danced along to her own singing, ''I reminisced the way we kissed it felt so personal, you took the chance to find my love and now you know.''
And soon that's just how they spent the night. Singing deep meaning love songs that were popular during previous summer's and performing the most ridiculous dance moves. Until they knocked out by 4 : 30 in the morning.
