The bell jingled as we entered the office, the top of the door hitting it both opening and closing.
"Be with you in a moment!" Jan called from the back of the office. I looked around at the dated furniture. The color scheme was definitely more 70s, with lots of terracotta, avocado, and chocolate. I wondered why they didn't modernize it, given that it was people's first impression of the place. I decided that maybe it wasn't my place to question.
Jan walked down the long, darkly paneled hall to the front of her office. "Dylan! I'm glad you took me up on my offer!"
The phone rang at the front desk, and Jan held up a finger, sat in the desk chair, and picked up the phone. "Residency Place, Jan speaking, how might I help you?" she said with a voice that sounded more cheery than her expression. It was then I knew she'd been doing the secretary's job for a while; no one in management answered with that welcoming tone, at least not in my experience.
We sat in the two chairs in front of the desk and tried to make ourselves comfortable as she continued.
"Yes, Mrs. Wilson," Jan said. "Christopher is coming to take a look at it today, but not until tea time. He's had to go and pick up some parts to take care of another job."
I could hear the caller's angry tone. Jan closed her eyes and let the lady rant for a moment. "Yes. Mrs. Wilson. It is difficult to have a proper cup of tea without water in your kitchen. But Mr. Thomson needs an additional electrical outlet in his living room for his oxygen pump. I'm sure you can understand how we might put a medical device before tea."
The women talked back and forth a bit more. By some miracle, Mrs. Wilson seemed calmer by the time Jan hung up the phone. She smiled at us as she rose and gestured for me to take a seat. "I'm so glad you're here! Have you ever worked with a multi-line phone before?"
I had, but not one from the 80s, so I requested a review. She gave me one, showing me which line was mine, how to transfer a call to another line, and how to check the voicemail of the system.
"Now, if someone calls for Christopher, take a message, then radio him," she explained, pointing to the walky-talky charging on the desk. "If they call for me, find out if I'm free before transferring them. I have an errand to run, so I'm hoping you can stay?" She looked at me expectantly.
"Yes, I'm prepared to work a full day, except for lunch. I'm afraid I didn't bring anything to eat," I explain.
"Oh, let's order takeaway!" she exclaimed. I've been dying for Chinese food. It'll be my treat as a welcome-aboard lunch."
I smiled. She was genuinely a nice person. "Thank you, that's kind of you."
