Chapter Twenty Three

Mia and Charlie hung out the rest of the day, just the two of them. Once they had finished at StarBucks, they packed up and went to the park on 34th and Jingle st.

"I'm so happy that you agreed to be my girlfriend," Charlie muttered, grabbing Mia's waist as they sat on the grass. Mia giggled.

"Me too," she agreed, a happy sigh escaping her lips as she looked into his beautiful blue eyes.

Mia looked at the time and her eyes popped out of her skull. "I have to go!" she told him, realizing that it was already 10:00.

"You're sure?" Charlie asked, frowning slightly.

"Yeah, I'm sorry." Mia kissed him lightly before heading over to her car. "Wait, are you gonna take a bus or do you need a ride?" she asked.

"I can take the bus," he told her.

"Well, bye Charlie. I'll see you tomorrow." She was about to get in her car before she turned around and ran over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him.

The kiss was long and passionate. Probably the best kiss she'd ever had.

"Bye, babe," he said, his breath ragged as they place.

Mia gently pulled away from his grasp before walking over to her car and reluctantly hopping in. "I'll see you at school tomorrow, right?" she asked, the door still open so she could hear his response.

"Yeah, I'll see you. Bye, Mia."

Mia closed the car door before turning on the ignition, opening her window, and driving back home.

Mia's phone rang loudly, waking Mia from her slumber. She looked at the clock. It was 11:07 at night!

"Yes?" she asked, hoping she sounded annoyed.

"You promised," she heard Blake's voice say. "You promised that you would be here and you're not. Where are you anyway?"

"I'm at home. I'm sorry about not hanging out with you. I completely forgot."

Blake sighed. "Just... please don't leave me hanging like that again."

Suddenly, a thought popped into her head. "Hey, wanna go to the park. We can hang out there. It wouldn't be too hard for me to sneak out if you know what I mean."

Blake chuckled. "I'm assuming it wouldn't be too hard," he agreed, referring to her invisibility.

"So?" Mia asked, hoping that he would accept.

He sighed and she knew he'd given in. A smile spread across her face before he had even said anything. "Fine," he said, confirming her thoughts.

"I'll see you there," she told him, standing up for her bed and rushing to her closet, knowing she'd have to change first.

Mia sat on the same swings she'd sat on the night that they kissed. She looked over at the grass next to the road and thoughts of Charlie ran through her mind. She was starting to question why she'd agreed to be his girlfriend. She didn't like him like that.

"Hey, Mia," Blake greeted, sitting on the swing to her right.

She, and her thoughts, turned to Blake. "Hey," she agreed, forcing a smile onto her face.

"So..." he started, his face nonchalant as he stared at the woodchips covering the ground. He seemed to be thinking hard. His eyebrows were scrunched together adorably. Mia and Blake sat there together, silence seeping over the dark night sky. A few moments passed before anyone spoke again and when someone did speak, it was Blake. "Why weren't you there?" he asked, finally looking up and turning to face Mia who cringed at the question.

"I told you," she responded, knowing it wasn't a valid answer. "I forgot." It was the truth but it wasn't what he wanted to hear and Mia knew that.

"Why did you forget though? I mean, what was so important?" His voice was filled with hurt and Mia almost ran over to him and hugged him right then and there but stopped herself when she caught sight of the grass, remembering that she had a boyfriend.

"I was hanging out with Charlie and time went by quickly. I really meant to hang ou-"

"Why him?" Blake asked, his voice going from soft and hurt to sharp and emotionless. "Why were you hanging out with him when you said you'd hang out with me?" he asked.

This was it. She knew she'd have to tell him eventually she just didn't expect it to happen so soon. "Blake, I have something to tell you," she admitted dreading everything as he looked into her eyes.

"What?" he asked.

"Charlie... well... he... I... Charlie-asked-me-out-and-I-said-yes," she spit out her words so fast that she could barely understand them. It almost sounded like one word but, of course, Blake understood perfectly.

His eyes widened and he looked hurt first. Then his face filled with rage. Without another word, he stood up from the swing and walked back to his car. At that moment, Mia had the urge to just run over to him and kiss him but she knew that she couldn't. Why had she even said yes to Charlie? She really didn't like him and was starting to question it.

Mia groaned, lying her forehead in her palm as she chastised herself. She tried to stay calm but tears still flew down her face. She rolled her eyes at herself, annoyed that she was crying at something so stupid.

Mia got up off the memorable swings and wiped her eyes clean of tears. She walked over to where her car was parked. It wasn't a long walk at all. In fact, it was really short. But it felt like an eternity. It seemed like she just couldn't get there no matter how hard she tried.

Her thoughts were killing herself but she tried to ignore them, focusing instead on getting to the car. Her anger was coming. And it was coming fast.

Eventually, she got to the car but she felt more like punching something than going back home.

Reluctantly, Mia started the car and drove home, her focus completely on the road as she drove quickly to her house.

She grabbed her keys before quietly walking inside. She had gotten pretty good control of her invisibility at this point although it was still exhausting. She crept up the thin stairs and snuck into her bedroom. She grabbed the bag that sat in her closet before walking down the stairs again.

She went back outside to her car and drove away quickly, not quite knowing where she was going. She ended up at an old abandoned warehouse.

She walked inside, her fury controlling her every movement. She changed quickly, ready to start training.

She walked into a big empty room and saw some old boxes. She concentrated on her hands, her emotions. Everything.

She let it all fly out of her hands. To her surprise, soon she heard a loud zap and saw that the sound was coming from her hands. She had emitted lightning. She was shocked (get it? Lol. I'm so funny) to say the least but it felt good. It was as if her anger was vanishing into the lightning.

She tried again, it worked, but the bolt was smaller this time and the zap was quieter. The more she struggled to use her ability to get her anger out, the more exhausted she became.

She tried to let herself stay mad. She tried so hard. But it was just impossible. She hated herself for what she did to Blake. The look in his eyes made her cringe in disgust. But not at him. No, not at anyone but herself.

She fell to her knees, unable to keep herself upwards as her hatred for herself took over her entire being. How could she have done that? Why had she said yes? It would have been so simple to just say no so why couldn't she?

Her mind swirled like a whirlpool as she thought of any possible explanation for what happened but as she closed her eyes, all she got were nightmares.

"Mia, Alex, Tori we're going to try something new today," Mia's mother said, sweetness coating her smooth voice.

"Okay, mama," she agreed, her voice moving against her will.

"Sure," Alex agreed, looking at his mom with adoration. He'd always been a mama's boy.

"Why don't you three have a seat?" she suggested, gesturing to three chairs that sat side by side, facing the table.

"Okay, mama," Mia agreed.

Tori just nodded and Mia remembered how quiet she was when she was younger. She smiled (inside) at the thought.

Mia walked over to the middle chair before sitting down, soon followed by Alex who sat on her left and Tori who sat on her left. She was surprisingly small and Mia assumed her to be around six.

"I've been working on something new," her mother told them.

Mia didn't say anything, instead just staring at her mother with curiosity. A knock resounded around the small room, catching Clarissa's attention. She turned to the door on the side before standing up and walking over to the metal door.

She grasped the handle and opened the door just a crack. Clarissa and whoever was at the door had some sort of conversation but Mia was unable to hear it. Soon, Clarissa had returned with three needles and a large vial of some sort of liquid. She set it on the table, getting the needles ready.

"I'm going to need you three to hold hands. Can you do that?" Clarissa asked.

"Of course!" Mia accepted, eager to get her mother's love. She grabbed Alex's hand and held it tightly, grabbing Tori's hand with her other. Her mom walked over to Alex before another knock sounded on the door.

"Come in!" Clarissa called, apparently already knowing who was at the door. Two young men walked inside. One of them looked vaguely familiar but she ignored it, focusing instead on the big needles in front of her. She knew it would hurt. The needles from her mom always did.

The familiar one walked towards the small table before grabbing a now filled needle from the table and walking over to her. She clutched Alex's hand tighter. He chuckled, apparently unaware of the pain that came with the shots. "Calm down, Mia. It's just a shot." She actually calmed down, both inside and out. That is to say, both actually her and memory of her. His voice was just as comforting. It was a voice she hadn't heard in years and she couldn't help but miss him. She'd always had a special connection with her siblings.

Mia looked over to her sister who seemed to be shaking. "Tori? Are you okay?" she asked. Mia could hear the worry in her own voice.

She didn't respond but that was normal. Instead, she just shook her head lightly and clutched tighter to Mia.

"Hey, it's gonna be okay. It'll sting a little. That's it. And I'll be here the whole time. Alex is here too, right Alex?" Mia looked over to her brother who was looking at their interaction, looking worried for Tori as well.

"Of course. We're a team, aren't we?" he told them lightly. "Hey, it's gonna be okay. We're together. We'll be fine. They're just shots," he assured his little sister who seemed to have calmed a bit.

"O-okay," their little sister agreed hesitantly, still clutching Mia's hand tightly. "You'll be there the whole time?" she asked, looking at her two older siblings.

"The whole entire time," Alex agreed.

The adults seemed to be ready at this point. They walked towards the three children who held tightly to each other, not knowing that it was all a part of their plan.

Soon, they reached them, Mia shut her eyes tight and let Tori continue to squeeze her hand tightly. Due to her closed eyes, she didn't expect the shot when it came.

She felt a pinch and felt relief wash over her.

Then the pain came.

It was completely different than the pinch. This pain spread through her whole body like a wildfire. She couldn't control her screams and heard her siblings screams as well. She clung to them tightly as though they were the only thing connecting her to a painless world. They were all in incredible pain. She knew that from the loss of circulation in her hands but she didn't mind, she was clinging just as tightly.

She knew, even then, that through all the pain. All the unbearable screams, at least they were together. They wouldn't always be together but for that one moment, that small space in time when they were all in pain, at least they were together.

A/N That's two days in a row! Aren't you proud of me!? But seriously, I worked really hard to get this out. Also, thank you for reading, and please don't forget to vote and comment. I always appreciate it.
