Chapter Six

After school, Mia called her dad to let him know that she would be hanging out with one of her friends that day. She got into her car and made her way back to Blake's house after making sure her sister had a ride home.

Luckily, her memory allowed her to know the way back to the house perfectly. She could've used this method to get to the school but she always worried that Tori would notice so she decided to play it safe.

The drive was long, even longer than normal. It took her a good hour to get to his house. When she finally arrived she walked up to the large door and rang the doorbell. She was then greeted by Blake's dark green eyes and brown hair.

"Hey," he greeted.

"Hey."

"You ready?" he asked.

"Yep."

Mia followed Blake inside the mansion with a million thoughts running through her mind. She was glad that she had remembered her workout clothes or else she would've had to borrow from Blake again.

"Hello, Mr. Payson," she said as Blake's dad appeared in view.

"Hello, Mia." They started walking towards the gym.

When they arrived Mia went to the changing rooms to put on her workout clothes which consisted of cute black leggings and a white crop-top with a cat on it.

When she walked out of the changing room she went straight to the treadmill.

While she was running Mr. Payson walked over to her. "Today will be the first day you will train your powers," he told her.

Mia paused the treadmill and looked at him, slightly shocked that she would be practicing with electricity so soon. She hopped off of the treadmill. "You sure?" she asked.

"The earlier you start the sooner you will be able to fully yield it," he told her.

"Okay, then. Where are we going to do that?" she asked.

"That room over there. It's made of a strong material called vintium that is unable to be electrified."

"Okay. Let's go then." They began walking to the room as Mia tried to gather her out-of-control thoughts.

Walking into the room, Mia realized just how large the room was. It was intimidating yet exciting.

This was it! She was finally going to learn how to control everything. Weeks of confusion, denial, and waiting had finally come to an end as she stood there, ready to control her gift.

"Woah," she breathed before gathering herself. She cleared her throat. "So, what am I supposed to do?"

"First, we're going to see how you were able to do it before moving on to the harder stuff. I must warn you that it will likely take months or even years to fully control it," he warned as she walked to the middle of the room while Mr. Payson and Blake stayed behind the glass on the other side of the room.

"Okay. I'm ready."

"Why don't you just try to use the lightning," he offered. "I must tell you, you might not be able to use it on your first try. In fact, I'd be extremely shocked if you were able to do so."

"Okay," she said before trying to concentrate.

"Are you ready for this?" he asked.

"Let's do this," she responded.

"First, you're going to take all of your energy and power into your arms."

Doing as she was told, she took a second to concentrate before pulling all of her energy, thoughts, and strength into her arms.

She tried to form lightning but for some reason she was unable to do so.

"Once you've concentrated that energy, try to imagine forcing it out of your fingertips. Imagine the lightning shooting out of your hands."

Although she followed his instructions exactly she still couldn't do it.

"It's okay if you are unable to do it. You need to remember that you have only started practicing your powers today. It's going to take you quite a while to be able to use them." The more he talked about how long it would take for her to control her powers the more annoyed she got.

As her rage increased she continued to imagine the lightning growing in her fingertips until it surged out of her body and into the world surrounding her.

At that moment something happened. A spark on her fingertips. Not lightning but a spark. "Did you see that!?"

"Good job, Mia," Mr. Payson congratulated.

"That was awesome! Great job," Blake said with a warm smile on his face.

Although she was immensely happy and proud she was exhausted. It seemed as though all of her energy had been taken out of her and into that tiny spark.

Suddenly, she felt her eyelids begin to flutter as the world around her began to spin. The dizziness was catching up to her as the world darkened.

She noticed Blake running towards her from across the room and grabbed her before everything went dark.

Mia woke up in a comfortable bed, her eyes still closed due to her lack of energy. After a few minutes, she slowly opened her eyes to see Blake looking down at her.

"Thank goodness. You seriously need to not do that again."

"So you were worried about me, huh?" Mia joked.

"Psh. No. You think that I'd be worried about you?"

"You care about me," she said in a sing-song voice.

"No, I don't," he defended, rolling his eyes.

"Suuuure," she said, winking at him jokingly.

"You are never going to let this go, are you?" he asked. It seemed as though he was trying to look annoyed or irritated or something but the small smile on his handsome face was a dead giveaway.

"Nope," she said, popping the p. "I will never forget the day that Blake Payson cared about Mia Patterson," she told him with a smug grin.

"Jeez! Why, oh why, did I ever decide to befriend you?" he wondered aloud. "Anyway, can you stand up?"

"I think so," she said.

"Why don't you try to sit up slowly," Blake suggested.

"Okay." Mia tried to sit up until she realized just how drained the training had really been. Just sitting up on the bed gave her a headache.

When Blake saw her struggling he put a hand behind her back to help her. Yet again, a wave of butterflies shot up her spine. "Thanks, Blake."

"No problem," he responded.

"I need to go soon but I'm also extremely exhausted."

"I'll give you a ride back." Mia was about to argue but he cut her off. "Don't argue. I'm going to give you a ride whether you like it or not."

"What about my car?" she asked.

"I'll drive your car and then take the bus back. Don't argue!"

"Fine, and... thank you," she said, knowing that he was going out of his way simply to help out a friend, someone he'd known for... a month? Had it really been such a short amount of time? It felt like it had been so much longer. She was already closer to the three of them than she had been to anyone in Seattle.

"Really, it's not a problem. You worked hard and you need a break. It's the least I can do for a new friend." She was still overcoming her shock at her realization considering how close the two were in such a short period of time.

"I think I can stand up now," she told him.

"You sure?"

"Yeah, I'm sure. Could you maybe help me, though," she asked with a questioning glance.

"Of course." He put an arm around her again, helping her up. She slowly slid her legs off of the bed with the help of Blake.

Standing up, she looked him in the eyes, grateful. "Thank you again." She knew he didn't want to hear it but she couldn't help it. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't help but be thankful. "When do you think we could leave?" she asked, cutting him off from what would have most likely been an argument or her thanking him.

He frowned slightly. "Soon," he told her, his frown flipping into another small smile. She then noticed just how incredible his smile was. She wished he smiled more. It turned his face from extremely attractive to heart-stoppingly gorgeous. It was as if his face lit up just by that small action.

Turning her attention back to the rest of his face, she realized his eyebrows had darted up as he looked down at her in curiosity. "What are you looking at?" he asked.

She had a sinking suspicion that her cheeks were red when she felt a slight warmth in her face. She tried to construct a lie but came up blank. "Uhhh," she stammered, standing there like an idiot.

He chuckled. Why was he chuckling? Had she done something stupid? Was something in her hair? Apparently he saw the look of horror upon his face as he his laughter ceased. "I'm not laughing at you, you know?" He paused, looking down at her. "Okay, maybe I was kind of laughing at you. It wasn't in a critical way, though. It was just hilarious how you just stood there," he told her. "Uhh," he mocked in a surprisingly accurate falsetto voice.

"Woah! You sound just like me. Who knew your voice was so high-pitched," she said, totally making fun of him as his face went from a small grin to a frown in a matter of seconds.

"I do not!" His eyebrows furrowed together as he scowled at Mia.

"Okay, sweetie," she retorted.

"Hey! I am very manly, I'll have you know!"

"Whatever you say, sugarpee."

"Uh! You are the most annoying person I have ever met," he told her, rolling his eyes and trying to look irritated, but behind his facade Mia could see the glint of amusement and was glad to see that she hadn't completely annoyed him.

"You know you love me." Mia giggled.

"That's what you think," he said. "We should probably go." Blake looked out the window. "It looks like it's going to rain. I don't want to drive in that weather." It was a lame excuse and she didn't know why he was so set in taking her home but either way she knew her dad would be upset so she nodded.

She soon realized that she had regained energy and was now able to walk so she made her way out of the building and to the car without help from Blake.

She rolled into the passenger's seat smoothly as she waited for Blake to get into the driver's seat. When he was in the old car she handed him the keys and told him the address before relaxing.

She was enjoying the peace and rest until loud, pounding music blasted from the speakers built into the car. She groaned as she realized that this was Blake's doing. Why couldn't he ever just be cool? Couldn't he just once let her relax in peace and silence.

"Would you turn that off!? I'm trying to relax."

He pouted his bottom lip as he turned to her with pleading eyes. It seemed as if he were mentally begging her to allow him to keep his music on. "Attention on the road!" she reminded him after he continued staring at her for a few seconds. At her words Blake turned his eyes back to the street in front of him. She wanted to be annoyed but at the sight of him with those big green eyes she knew that she wouldn't be able to say no.

Leaving the music on she turned to him. "I hope you're happy because I gave up my peace and joy for you," she told him.

His face lit up in that same stunning grin as her heartbeat sped up to an unbelievable pace at the sight of his smirk. She wished her heart would stop racing but she knew that the only way to do so would be to get Blake to stop smiling and she wanted anything but that. If it meant keeping him smiling she would deal with the pounding in her chest.

"Why do you keep looking at me like that?"

"Huh?" she asked, shaking herself out of her daze.

"You keep looking at me with this weird glint in your eyes. It's weird," he told her, scrunching up his nose slightly.

"Oh, sorry," she apologized, shifting awkwardly in her seat.

"Anyway, it seems like we're here. This is your house, right?" Blake asked.

Mia turned her focus to the house they were now parked in front of and was surprised to see that it was, indeed, her home.

She was happy to be back in the comfort of her own home but she also didn't want to say goodbye to Blake and she feared the wrath of her father at being... her eyes widened when she looked at the clock to see that it was 10:00! She was over an hour late. Oh boy. She was about to get it.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow," she said, turning to open the car door.

"Wait," Blake called before her hand had even reached the handle. "We should probably figure out car-pooling." Mia looked at him in confusion. "I mean, if we're going to the same school and are going to the same place afterwards it would probably be easier to carpool, right?"

"Yeah, but... my sister."

"She can come on the way to the school and get a ride back with someone else, right?" Hope seemed to flood his features as she thought about it.

"Okay," she agreed with a small smile. "I mean, I'll have to ask her about it but we should be fine."

With that, Mia opened the door and walked inside, terrified of her soon-to-be punishment.

A/N I know that it's a few hours late and that some of the wording at the end is a little weird but I was having serious writers block until like, five minutes ago which is when I wrote most of this. Again, sorry and I hope you like it. Don't forget to share, comment and vote if you enjoy.
