29. He Writes A Book

A/n: IMPORTANT: I DECIDED TO CHANGE SARAH GRACE'S NAME. HER NAME IS NOW JULIA KENNEDY MENDES. I APOLOGIZE FOR ANY CONFUSION, BUT I JUST WASN'T LIKING THE NAME ANYMORE SO I CHANGED IT. Anyways, I hope that you guys like this imagine! Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

I've been married to the singer and songwriter, Shawn Mendes, for a little twenty five years now, but we've been together for almost twenty nine years. We have three beautiful children together: Rose Lucille Mendes, who's twenty four years old, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, also known as Jake, who's twenty two years old, and Julia Kennedy Mendes, who's twenty years old.

"Daddy?" Julia, who's a major Daddy's girl - not as much as Rose, but still, she's a Daddy's girl - asked as we sat at the dining room table. The kids were all home from college for the summer, giving Shawn and I great joy.

"What's up sweet pea?" Shawn asked.

"A few years ago Mom wrote a book. Would you ever write a book?" She asked. At almost fifty years old, Shawn still looks amazing for his age. Maybe I'm biased because I'm his wife, but still. He has a tiny bit of gray hair, but it's not much. He still goes to the gym pretty often so he's in great shape. Shawn thought for a moment before answering.

"I don't know. If I did I would definitely want your mom to look it over and edit it." Shawn said with a smile. I smiled too.

"Oh that's right, mom's first job was as English tutor, right?" Jake asked. I nodded.

"Yup. I got paid fifty cents above minimum wage but it was mostly fun. Wasn't fun when student would give me a hard time, but helping them always felt rewarding and nice." I said as I finished my dinner.

"Why did students give you a hard time?" Rose asked.

"Well..." I said and began to tell them the stories about randomly getting yelled at by students for no reason and stuff like that. After dinner, Shawn and I did the dishes.

"Rose and I are going out." Jake said.

"Be back by midnight, drive safe, stay away from strangers -" Shawn started.

"I know Dad." Jake said with an attitude.

"Okay, two things: 1. Don't give me an attitude or else you won't be allowed to go out and 2. Watch out for your sister." Shawn said. Jake nodded.

"Okay. Bye. Love you guys." Jake said.

"Love you too." Shawn and I said, and then they left. Shawn and I heard someone play on the piano and smiled.

"She sounds beautiful." Shawn said.

"Well she had a great teacher." I said as I smiled at my husband. He smiled back. We soon finished the dishes but Julia was still playing the piano. Shawn pulled me close to him.

"I love you Mrs. Mendes." Shawn said and my heart fluttered.

"I love you too Mr. Mendes. Twenty five years later and hearing you call me Mrs. Mendes still makes my heart flutter." I said as Shawn began to sway us from side to side. Shawn ducked down and placed his soft lips on my chapped ones. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn and I pulled away when the music stopped playing and we heard a groan.

"UGH!" Julia groaned. Shawn and I practically went running to her.

"What's wrong sweet pea?" Shawn asked.

"I can't get this part right no matter how many times I try." Julia said. She looked like she was close to tears.

"Can you play it for me please so I can hear it?" Shawn asked. She shook her head.

"No because I don't want to mess up in front of you Daddy." Julia said.

"Jules, messing up is part of life. Do you think that the first time I sat down at a piano I was as good as I am now?" Shawn asked. Julia wiped some tears away and shook her head.

"No." She said.

"Exactly. Will you play it for me so I can help you please?" Shawn asked. Julia nodded.

"Sure." She said.

"Do you guys mind if I watch?" I asked. They shook their heads.

"No that's fine honey. Jules do you mind if I sit next to you?" Shawn asked. She shook her head.

"That's fine." She said. Shawn sat down next to her and I watched with pride. Rose looks a lot like me, Jake looks a lot like Shawn, but Julia has always been a mix of us. Julia played for Shawn and I smiled. I then heard what she meant. "See? I keep screwing up."

"Stop that. It's fine. You're not going to be perfect with everything. I'm not perfect. I think that this is what you want to do." Shawn said before playing the piano.

"Ohhh, now I get it. Thanks Daddy." Julia said once Shawn was done.

"You're welcome honey. Any time that you're having problems, just let me know - unless they're feminine problems, that's for your mother." Shawn said and Julia and I laughed.

"I think that I'll go to bed. I'm tired." Julia said. Shawn kissed the side of her head.

"Okay my sweet little girl. Good night." He said.

"Daddy I'm not a little girl anymore. I'm twenty years old." She said as she stood up. Shawn stood up and pulled her in for a hug.

"I don't care how old you are, you're always going to be my little girl. Understand?" Shawn asked.

"I understand. I love you guys." Julia said. I gave her a hug.

"We love you too. Good night." I said. She then went upstairs to her room.

"Want to sit with me darling?" Shawn asked. I nodded and we sat down. He put his arm around me and I cuddled up to him.

"You're an amazing father." I said after a few moments of peaceful silence. Shawn kissed the side of my head.

"Thank you darling. You're an amazing mother." He said. I smiled.

"Thank you. I love you." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head again and then rested his head against mine.

"You're welcome. I love you too." Shawn said.

"I don't know how you do it babe." I said.

"Do what?" Shawn asked. I got goosebumps on my arm as he gently let his fingertips move in patterns on my arm.

"You're almost fifty years old and you're still such a hunk." I said. Shawn tipped his head back with laughter before gently pulling me closer to him.

"Well you're also almost fifty years old and you're still the most beautiful girl in the world." Shawn said. I blushed and looked up at him.

"I love what you just said except for my age." I said with a giggle. Shawn chuckled.

"Forty nine going on fifty looks good on you though." He said before placing a kiss on my temple. I blushed again.

"Should we stay up until the kids get home to make sure that they've gotten home safely?" I asked.

"If that would make you feel better, yes." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Yeah, it would make me feel better." I said.

"Okay, then that's what we'll do. Hey love bug?" Shawn asked. I smiled at the nickname.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Do you think that I should write a book?" He asked. He seemed nervous so I put my hand to his cheek and rubbed it with his thumb.

"That would be amazing. But don't feel like you have to just because Julia asked you." I said.

"No I know. But it would be cool to tell my life story, you know?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"Would you read it?" He asked.

"Is the sky blue?" I asked with a smirk.

"Yes." He said with a laugh.

"There's your answer." I said.

"Wait, how does your answer have to do with the sky being blue?" Shawn asked.

"Because both of the answers are obviously a yes." I said. Shawn smiled and kissed my lips a few times.

"I adore you honey. I always have and I always will." Shawn said. I snuggled my face into his chest.

"I feel the same way about you baby. Oh! You should also do an audiobook. If you did an audiobook, I would play it around the house all of the time just to hear your voice." I said. Shawn laughed.

"You have my cell phone number, or, maybe - just maybe - you could talk to me in person to hear it." He said. I swatted at his chest lightly.

"I mean for when you're away." I said.

"Oh. Babe?" He asked.

"Yes?" I asked as I looked up at him.

"Would you mind helping me out with the book?" He asked. I smiled at him.

"Oh Shawn, you know that I would do anything for you. Of course I wouldn't mind helping. You helped me with my book." I said. He smiled at me.

"Where should I begin in the story?" He asked. I thought for a moment.

"Well, for mine, I wrote about when and where I was born and who my parents are and stuff like that. You don't have to do it like that though. You could start it by saying what's going on at that moment." I said.

"What do you mean?" He asked. I sat up a little.

"Well, you could say something like 'As I start my story, my youngest daughter Julia is asleep in bed. Rose, my oldest daughter, is at a party with her brother, Jake, and my wife is impatiently waiting for them to return home safely.' and then you could say something like 'My life story technically began when I was born, but at almost fifty years old, married for over twenty years, and a father of three, my life is just beginning.' or something like that. I don't know." I said. Shawn's eyes were wide.

"Holy crap you're good. You just came up with that right now?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. Does it actually sound that good?" I asked.

"I have to go write that down." Shawn said, and he did. Soon, Shawn met with a publisher who instantly agreed to publish his book. When we told the kids, they were all very happy.

"Alright, now us kids need to write books so we can catch up to Mom and Dad." Rose said and we all laughed.

"Your mother already came up with the first two sentences and she did it right on the spot. I'm amazed by your mother." Shawn said and I blushed and smiled.

"She's quite the remarkable woman, isn't she?" Rose asked. Shawn smiled at me and I thought I saw tears form in his eyes as he nodded.

"Yup. She really is." He said.

"Come here babe. Excuse us for a second kids." I said.

"Okay." They said. Shawn and I went into another room and I held his face in my hands.

"Why do you have tears in your eyes?" I asked.

"They're happy tears, I promise. I just, I love you so much. You're so amazing. You're an amazing wife, mother, and person. I don't even have words for how I'm feeling right now. I'm just so beyond lucky and grateful." Shawn said. I hugged him.

"Oh honey." I said. Soon, Shawn got to work on his book. After he had a few chapters done, he printed them out.

"Hey baby?" Shawn asked me as I read a book in our bedroom. I looked up.

"Hmm?" I asked.

"I printed out a few chapters of my book. Would you mind taking a look at it please?" He asked. I smiled.

"That's fine handsome. Mind if I do that in your office?" I asked.

"Nope, that's fine." He said as we walked to his office. I looked around.

"Do you have a red pen?" I asked. He found one and handed it to me.

"Here you go." He said.

"Thank you. Oh my gosh I feel like I'm back in my old tutoring days." I said and Shawn laughed.

"Be as honest as possible. If you need to scribble out a whole page, do it." He said as he sat down.

"Okay. Um, I say this with love, there's no way that I can do this while you're in here. Too much pressure." I said. Shawn laughed and kissed the side of my head.

"Okay honey. Let me know when you're all set." He said. I nodded.

"Okay, I will." I said, and then he walked out of the room. I smiled when I saw that he really did use my suggestion for how to start the story. As I went along, I made marks. I scribbled things out, put commas or periods in where they were needed. Wrote if the sentence was a run on or a fragment or not. If a sentence or even a whole paragraph seemed unnecessary, I scribbled it out and wrote "unnecessary" in the margins. My phone dinged, it was a text from Shawn.

My Hubby: Hey babe, when you're all done with it, before you give it back to me, could you just write some suggestions on the last page please?

Me: Of course I will baby. Anything for my stud muffin of a husband.

My Hubby: Lol.

I smiled and put my phone to the side. After a little bit, I got to the last page. I wrote down some suggestions.

"Don't move too fast in the story. There's more that happened in between everything. Clear the air about somethings. Let it out on the pages, reveal it. Don't be afraid to be your amazing self! You're almost fifty years old, I say this with love, but you shouldn't be mentioning us meeting by chapter three. Also, maybe break the book up into parts, like part one is life before becoming famous, part two could be your rise to fame, and so on and so forth." I wrote. I then brought it all downstairs.

"Hey honey." Shawn said when he saw me. I was worried that he would be upset about the corrections.

"Hi. I finished looking it over." I said.

"Great! How does it look?" He asked.

"First of all, I love you -" I started.

"Oh gosh does it look bad?" He asked. I sat down next to him and handed him the papers.

"No, but I'm worried that you'll be upset about what I wrote in there." I said. Shawn put the papers down on the coffee table and pulled me closer to him.

"I could never be upset with you honey. Never. I want you to butcher it if you need to." Shawn said. I sighed and nodded.

"Okay." I said. He then picked it up and looked it over. When he was done, he smiled at me.

"Thank you for being honest babe." He said.

"You're not upset or anything?" I asked.

"Nope, not at all." He said.

"Oh! Also, you know a bunch of people who could write a foreword for you. Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, the list goes on and on." I said.

"I wrote the foreword for your book. Wait, what's the foreword of a book again?" Shawn asked.

"Basically a short introduction to the book, usually by someone other than the author. Honey, you wrote the foreword to my book because I'm not a celebrity and the celebrities that I do know are friends of yours." I said. Shawn frowned.

"Ours. Friends of ours. We're husband and wife babe, what's mine is yours and what's yours is mine." He said. I smiled and kissed his cheek.

"Oh, and maybe put a quote or some lyrics at the beginning of your book if you want. Am I making too many suggestions?" I asked as I suddenly felt bad.

"No! I love this! Any ideas that you have, tell me, okay babe?" He asked. I nodded.

"Okay." I said.

"You did a Jackie Kennedy quote, right?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"She said 'If you produce one book, you will have done something wonderful in your life.'" I quoted. Shawn nodded.

"What quote should I put?" Shawn asked.

"I don't know baby. You could do some song lyrics if you wanted." I said. He nodded and then looked at something on his phone. I kissed his cheek and went to stand up to leave the room.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"Upstairs to read. Why? Do you want me to stay with you?" I asked.

"I'm just trying to find the perfect quote." He said.

"Keep in mind that you don't need to use a quote if you don't want to." I said as I sat back down next to him.

"I think I want to, but I obviously want to relate to the quote." He said. I nodded.

"Okay baby." I said. I sat back and went on my own phone.

"Found a quote!" He said. I smiled.

"What is it?" I asked. He handed me his phone.

"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." - Benjamin Franklin

"Do you like it?" Shawn asked.

"I love it." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek and I smiled.

"I'm going to go make at least some of these corrections babe." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay. I'll go read a book." I said and we both went upstairs. A couple of weeks later, Shawn came to me again. He had been working hard on the book.

"Baby? Will you look this part over please?" He asked. I nodded.

"Of course." I said, and we did the same process of me editing it. One day Shawn came to me with a huge smile on his face and some papers in his hands. I had just woken up from a nap when he came in. He set the papers down on our dresser and, with a huge smile adorning his face, crawled up to me on the bed.

"Hello my love. How was your nap?" He asked.

"Good. What are you all smiley about baby?" I asked. I couldn't help but smile too. His smile is contagious.

"I wrote about meeting you and stuff like that. It was so easy to write and it came so quickly." Shawn said.

"Good babe. I find that it's always been easy for me to write about something that I'm interested in or passionate about." I said.

"Well Mrs. Mendes, I'm definitely interested in you and I'm definitely passionate about you." Shawn said as he gently laid his body on mine and buried his face in my neck. I smiled.

"That's good because I feel the same way about you. Want me to read over this part too?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah, but for right now I just want to cuddle with my wife." Shawn said.

"Get under the blankets with me honey." I said. He did.

"Come here." He said as he gently pulled me close to him.

"I love you baby." I said. He hummed.

"I love you too." He said as he put his head on my chest. I rubbed his back and soon he was asleep. Since I had just woken up, I wasn't able to fall back asleep, but I didn't mind holding Shawn in my arms. He always holds me in his arms, so why not return the favor? I was rubbing his back with one hand and his arm, which was wrapped around me, with another hand, when I saw someone poke their head in. It was Rose. I waved for her to come in.

"Hi. Sorry." She whispered.

"Nothing to be sorry for. Everything okay?" I asked. She shrugged.

"I don't know. I'm worried about Daddy." She said.

"Why?" I asked.

"He's not as young as he used to be and he's been staying up late all of the time to write this book." She said. I nodded and looked at my sleeping husband and then back at my oldest daughter.

"I'll talk to him." I said and she nodded before leaving the room. When Shawn woke up, he smiled at me.

"Hey there darling." He said.

"Hi honey. How was your nap?" I asked.

"Good. I didn't realize how tired I was." He said.

"Baby, remember when I was writing my book, and there were times when you needed to take my laptop away because it would be the wee hours of the morning and you were worried about me?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"Well I'm starting to feel that way about you, and apparently I'm not the only one." I said.

"What do you mean?" Shawn asked.

"Rose came in here while you were sleeping and said that she was worried about you. She said that you're not as young as you used to be." I said. He nodded.

"Okay. I'll talk to her. Do you want to look at what I wrote while I talk to her?" Shawn asked.

"Sure baby. I'll be in your office." I said and he nodded.

"Okay." He said.

"Kisses?" I asked. Shawn nodded and kissed me a few times. We got out of bed and he went into Rose's room as I went into his office with the papers and began to read. I smiled as I read about the day that we met.

"As I sat down with Y/n on our first date, I couldn't help but smile. She was - and still is - stunning. Her y/h/c hair was up in a ponytail, showing off her beautiful face. Her y/e/c eyes drew me in. Looking into her eyes has always been like getting lost in a maze that I don't want to find my way out of.

'So, I'll be honest with you, because I'm a fan of yours, I went to your concert last night, and I don't mean to sound creepy, but I know a lot about you.' She said with a laugh that made my heart flutter.

'That's not creepy at all. You were at my show last night?' I asked. She nodded as she took a sip of her coffee.

'Yup. You guys did amazing.' She said. I blushed.

'Well thank you. You know, I don't know anything about you but your name, and I'm assuming that you're from the Boston area. So tell me about yourself Miss Y/l/n.' I said. I listened intently as she told me about herself. I found that I had instantly clicked and connected with her. I didn't feel like I had to hide any part of who I was, I could be myself and she wouldn't judge.

'I'm so sorry, I'm talking way too much.' She said. I gently placed my hand on hers, and when our hands touched, I felt electricity spark through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. It was a feeling I had never gotten before, but with Y/n, I always get that feeling.

'You're fine. I like hearing the sound of your voice.' I said. She blushed.

'Well it sounds a little different than usual. I'm surprised that I didn't lose my voice at your concert last night.' She said with a laugh and I laughed too.

'You're a very interesting girl miss Y/n Y/l/n. So do you have any siblings?' I asked. She nodded.

'Yup. I have an older brother.' She said. I nodded. We continued to talk for a full two hours before Jake tapped me on the shoulder and told me that my manager wanted me." Shawn wrote. I smiled, surprised that he had remembered all of that for some reason. I went into Rose's room.

"Where's your father?" I asked.

"In the living room." She said. I nodded.

"Thank you honey." I said.

"You're welcome Mom." She said. I went downstairs and smiled at Shawn as I walked over to him and sat on his lap.

"Hey baby." He said.

"You remembered so much about our first date." I said.

"How could I forget?" He asked with a smile. I hugged him.

"I love you so much." I said. Shawn rubbed my back.

"I love you so much too baby girl." He said. I placed a gentle kiss on his neck and then picked my head up.

"I'm going to go continue to look at what you wrote." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay beautiful. I'll be here." He said.

"Okay." I said. I went back upstairs and started reading again. He had written a lot and I was very proud of him. I soon got to the part where he wrote about when we first started talking about our future together.

"Y/n and I laid on the couch in my condo as we watched some random movie. Well, she was watching it, but I was too focused on her. Her back was pressed against my chest and I kept kissing the side of her head as my arms were wrapped around her. I had known for a while that I wanted a future with her, but we had never talked about it.

'Baby, can you flip over so you're laying on your stomach and facing me please?' I asked.

'Sure.' She said and flipped over. She rested her head on my chest and I rubbed her back.

'Y/n?' I asked. She looked up at me.

'Yes Shawn?' She asked.

'What do you see in your future?' I asked. She thought for a moment.

'I see myself graduating from college with a bachelor's degree in psychology and eventually getting my master's degree in school counseling, and then becoming a school counselor.' She said. I nodded.

'Do you, um, when you think of your future, do you see me in it?' I asked. She smiled and nodded. Oh thank God.

'Yes. When you think of your future, do you see me in it?' She asked. I nodded.

'Yeah. I do.' I said. She smiled and moved up a little so she could kiss me.

'I love you.' She said when we pulled away.

'I love you too.' I said. She put her head back on my chest.

'Baby?' She asked.

'Hmm?' I responded.

'When you say that you see me in your future, what do you mean?' She asked. I rubbed her back with one hand and put the other hand on her cheek so she would look at me.

'I'm nervous to say it.' I whispered. She frowned.

'Why?' She asked.

'Because what if I scare you away?' I asked. She shook her head.

'You won't scare me away. I promise.' She said. I nodded and sighed.

'Okay, I'm nervous to say all of this, but when I think of my future, I see you. And I don't mean that I see us dating for a while. I mean that I see you walking down the aisle in a white wedding dress, or whatever color wedding dress you pick. I mean that I see us living together in a beautiful home. I mean that I see us having a few kids together. I meant that I see us being together forever. Y/n, you're not a temporary person in my life. I want you forever.' I said. Y/n smiled at me and had happy tears in her eyes. She kissed me and I couldn't help but smile into the kiss, causing her to smile too, and we pulled away.

'I would love that.' She said.

'Yeah?' I asked.

'Yeah.' She said. We continued to talk about our future together. The next day I went out and got her a promise ring." Shawn wrote. I smiled and continued to read. Soon, I was finished, and soon, Shawn was finished with his book and it was ready to be published. He never told me who he was going to be dedicating it to.

"Here's the first copy of your book." Shawn's publisher, Anthony, said. Shawn smiled.

"Thank you." Shawn said.

"Would you like a copy too Mrs. Mendes?" Anthony asked. I nodded.

"I would love one. Shawn baby, will you sign it for me?" I asked. He nodded.

"Of course darling." Shawn said.

"Thank you." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek and then wrote something in the book, closed the book, and handed it to me. I opened it and saw the quote that he had found on one of the first pages. I then got to the dedication page and happy tears formed in my eyes.

"This book is dedicated to my three beautiful children: Rose, Jake, and Julia.

This book is also dedicated to my amazing wife. Without her love, support, encouragement, and help, this book would not be possible, and I would not be the man that I am today." Shawn had written.

"You dedicated it to me?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah. Did you read what I wrote underneath that?" He asked.

"No, I'll look now." I said. I read what he had signed.

"Y/n Mendes, my love for you is endless. You make me want to be the best that I can be and you have changed my life in the best way possible. You mean more to me than words will ever be able to describe. I love you Mrs. Mendes. Love, Shawn Mendes." He wrote. I smiled at him and hugged him.

"I'm so proud of you honey oh my gosh." I said. He kissed my cheek.

"Thank you baby." He said. Soon, the book was published and became a bestseller. I'm so beyond proud of my amazing husband and I love him so much.
