Chapter 38
Shawn
"Is this a thing for you?" Janet asked, rolling her neck and pushing off major attitude towards Amelia.
"Excuse me?" Amelia responded.
"It's just starting to seem like you have a real problem with inserting yourself where you don't belong." She said walking right up to her and standing in her face. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't call the police on your ass right now."
"J let me handle this." I said, standing close behind them.
"No baby, because I'm curious to know what she has to say." She said.
Amelia glared at her for a moment and then smiled. For a second I thought Janet might slap the smile right off her face. Amelia shrugged. "Go ahead, call them." She held up a set of keys. "I used the key that was given to me to get in." She said and flinched as Janet quickly snatched them from her hand.
"Thank you," Janet said. "Now that you've returned our keys, you can leave." They stood eye to eye, as the tension thickened by the second. My chest was tight and I felt like I might have to play referee at any moment.
Amelia looked passed her and at me.
"She speaks for you know Shawnette?" She asked. "You're like a well trained puppy." She said and laughed. "I knew she had you sprung but fuck." She was beginning to mock me and I could feel my own anger and irritation growing in the pit of my stomach.
"I speak for my damn self." I said stepping in between them. "And as for being sprung..." I looked back at Janet, licked my lips and shook my head. "Can you really blame me?" I said and met Amelia's gaze again. Janet looked at her with raised brows and smirked.
Before I could react, Amelia raised her hand and hit me across the face, slapping me hard and firm. Janet jumped in her direction. I scooped her into my arms and held on to her tight while she yelled for me to let her go. I could tell by the look on Amelia's face that she was just as surprised at own her reaction as I was.
Her eyes went soft and tears swelled in them. Once Janet stop resisting me and calmed I let her go.
"WHY ARE YOU HERE?" Janet yelled.
"I came to get my things." Amelia said.
"Is that all?" Janet said and walked over to the storage closet near the front door. We had packed what she'd left behind the same day we returned home. Janet pulled out an open box filled with Amelia's things and threw it at her feet. "You have your things, now leave."
Amelia scooped the box into her arms and without looking at either of us, walked out of the door.
I found myself feeling a bit guilty. She'd definitely over stepped her boundaries but I had lead her on. I couldn't help but to blame myself for this. I glanced at Janet. She was furiously pacing back and forth. As she began to ramble.
"We are changing the locks tonight! She is crazy."
"Baby, stop for s second." I said reaching out and grabbing her hand. She turned to look at me. "I have to go talk to her."
"What? Baby no! She just hit you. You're not going out there." Janet said. "She's obviously fucking nuts."
"That's why I think I need to go talk to her J. She is mad and hurt, that's a bad combination. I need to make this right before she does something else crazy. Besides I provoked her just now."
"Yeah, after she called you a trained dog."
"Well she did get one thing right, I do got it pretty bad for you." I said and kissed her.
Janet rolled her eyes. "Go, but be careful and hurry back." She said and smiled sweetly as she headed for the bedroom.
"Let's make this quick Shawn." I said to myself on the way out to the door.
Amelia was stepping onto the elevator just as I came around the hallway. The doors were closing.
"Hold the doors!" I yelled. She just watched me run towards her and did nothing. I somehow managed to catch it just in time.
"You wasn't gonna hold the door for me?" I asked, out of breath as we were closed inside. She looked at me and rolled her eyes.
"What is tonight all about Amelia?" I asked. "I want the truth."
She wiped her face in frustration as tears started to fall. "I told you, I just wanted my stuff." I glanced into the box, aside from a pair of shoes, a couple a bras and maybe a pair of sunglasses, nothing else in the box looked like it was worth keeping.
Amelia stopped the elevator, threw the box to the floor and looked at me. I braced as it came to a sudden stop. "I thought you might be home alone tonight." She said. "I needed to see you, to talk to you. I wanted to understand why you're doing this to me Shawnette, to us." She said moving closer to me. She touched my face, her eyes pleading with mine. "Please baby." Careful to not be aggressive, I took her by the wrists and put her hands at her side. "I'm in love with you. We were so happy. And then you left and then things changed."
"Things changed for you, but you see, I'm my heart nothing change. I love her Amelia." I said. "It just doesn't compare." She snatched her wrist from my grasp.
"Why did you say that you loved me?"
"I meant what I said, you know that I care for you but this was doomed before it started and I'm sorry for not realizing that sooner." I said. "You have to believe me when I say I'm sorry for hurting you. It's not what I wanted at all. I was hurting when we met and I let myself get wrapped up in the idea of us. But I was running from my shit. That was wrong. Amelia I'm sorry."
She looked at me as her tears continued to fall and didn't say a word. She started the elevator again and the doors opened. She stepped out then turned and looked at me.
"You can keep your sorry. It doesn't mean anything to me and it's not what I want Shawnette." She said and kicked over the box. "I'll see you around."
She walked away and left me standing there, gazing at her until the elevator doors closed. I tried to wrap my mind around what just happened as her last words echoed in my ears. I paused before walking into my apartment and stared into the box in my hands. What had I gotten myself into?
Janet
Patience was definitely not one of my virtues as I paced in front of the door waiting for Shawn to return. I heard a shuffle and opened it quickly. She was still holding the box with Amelia's belongings in it.
"Did she change her mind?" I joked. Shawn wasn't amused as she walked inside and sat the box next to the door. She walked straight into her room with out saying a word. I made sure to lock the door before joining her. She sat at the edge of the bed, eyes filled with worry and focused on the floor. "Baby what happened?"
She didn't speak and she looked exhausted. How quickly I forget that we had an extremely long day. She needed to relax. I kneeled next to her and she looked at me.
"Stay right here, I'll be right back baby." I said and kissed her hands.
After the bubble bath was ready I walked back into the room. Shawn was still in the same place I left her. Her head was resting in her hands. I rest my head against her and closed my eyes. I could feel her exhaustion and worry. I kissed her head and she brought her eyes to mine, and we smiled.
"Wanna take a bath with me?" I asked and held out my hand. She nodded and I led her into to the bathroom.
I removed my clothes first and kicked them to a pile in the corner. Shawn glanced at me and smiled. "I'm never gonna get used to this." She said looking at me like it was the first time all over again.
I pulled at her jacket, opened it and pulled it off her shoulders, sending it crumbling to the floor. Her breast were bare and she was left standing in just her pants. I grabbed her waistband and pulled her closer to me. Her fingers grazed the small of my back and she I smiled as we watched the goosebumps rise on our skin simultaneously.
She helped me inside and sat behind me.

We didn't talk or play music. The quiet was serene. She looked at me for a moment and I thought I might melt into the water surrounding us.

Her lips touched mine and it was like everything was okay again. I wanted to switch places and we did so in a very funny and clumsy manner but we got there.
Shawn finally relaxed into my body and let her head fall back against me. I soaked a sponge and let the water pour over her shoulders as closed her eyes.
"Amelia made me nervous tonight J." Shawn said breaking the silence. "Maybe It was her tone." She opened her eyes and looked up at me. "I don't think this is the last time I'll see her baby."
"Shawn don't worry. Like you said before she's just a girl with a broken heart. Once she has some time to herself, she'll find someone." I said. I realized I sounded like was trying to convince myself as well.
"She knows about us J. What if she outs us?" Shawn said and sat up in the tub.
"So what, it'll just be out then. I would like it to happen when I'm ready, but its bound to happen at some point. So fuck it right?" I said and shrugged.
She smiled and laid her head back against me. I know I didn't take away all her worries but she had some kind of peace at mind.
I let the water pour over her breasts and stomach this time, washing away the bubbles. I wanted to feel her. Setting the sponge aside, I began touching here, allowing my hands to roam down to her stomach. As I grazed her thighs, she opened her legs willingly, urging me to touch her, begging for it.
"Please." She said lifting her hips as my fingers caressed the soft hair between her legs.
"Please what?" I asked and licked my lips.
"Please make me feel good." She said, moaning loudly as my fingers entered her before she could even finish her plea. Shawn gripped both sides of the tub as water splashed, spilling over the sides and on to the floor.
"I love being inside of you." I whispered in her ear as hers moans grew louder. She was so close I could feel her tightening around my fingers. I could feel her pulse from with in her depths and just as I curled my fingers to hit her spot, the fire alarm began to blare loudly throughout the building.
It scared us both as we got dress as quickly as we could and headed for the door. I held Janet close to me, and pulled on the hood of the sweater she'd thrown on. I didn't want to risk anyone seeing her.
The sprinklers had come on in the the hallways of the entire building. The elevator was temporarily deactivated, causing everyone to head for the stairs.
We managed to make it out of the building in one piece without getting hurt by the herd of people trying to get outside.
The cool ocean breeze felt like ice. We were soaked from head to toe. I held Janet in my arms as the fire department arrived on scene.
They checked the entire building and didn't find any smoke or fire and cleared the building allowing us to go back inside. We got into some dry clothes and cuddle on the couch. My mind was racing and looked at Shawn.
"Do you think this was a coincidence?" I asked her.
She shook her head. "No."
