Chapter Thirty Eight

Spiderpaw hadn't felt so uneasy in a while. His stomach curled and his tail flattened like a leaf. He followed Redshade closely, not risking losing her. He made sure Heronkit was always by his side, not a paw-step further. He didn't want to lose her in this place.
"Have you ever spoken to my sister?" Spiderpaw asked.
Redshade glanced his way, her cold gaze chilling his fur. "Briefly," she meowed. "She did try to speak to me."
"Didn't you want to talk to her?" Spiderpaw questioned.
Redshade shook her head. "I didn't mind. Gets lonely down here sometimes."
"Then why did you mention she tried?"
Redshade grunted, flicking her tail as she beckoned the cats to move quicker. "I'm not allowed to converse with the Land Warriors," she meowed.
"Land Warriors?" Spiderpaw questioned. "Am I one of those?"
Redshade nodded. "Although you're a medicine cat, I suppose so."
Spiderpaw nodded. "I can't see why you're not allowed to speak with us."
Redshade turned away. Spiderpaw noticed that Heronkit's ears flattened.
"My loyalty has been tested, Spiderpaw." Redshade stated. "I'll never pass the test to be loyal to this place. To be loyal to him."
Spiderpaw's ears flattened, but not in fear of Redshade's sudden irritability. Instead he dipped his head and tried to ignore his eyes welling up. "I'm so sorry," he meowed.
He didn't exactly know what he was sorry for. But just hearing the tone of Redshade's voice, he assumed him not knowing yet was the safest option.
"What's done is done," Redshade meowed. "Now I must remain here. But I admit, speaking with some sane cats is nice."
Spiderpaw flattened himself. He had heard the voice again. The calling.
Heronkit glanced his way, but tried to lift herself up. She looked at Redshade, opening her mouth to speak.
"Spiderpaw, I know you're scared," Spiderpaw heard Redshade utter. "But if that's what I think, we need to move."
Spiderpaw refused to ask any more questions. Instead he simply got to his paws, and although he was shaking, pushed himself to continue, following Redshade as she skimmed along the ground, leaving a dim glow of green from her eyes behind her.
With every second that passed on, Spiderpaw could hear the voice gaining on him. Not a few seconds passed where Spiderpaw didn't panic and check that Heronkit was right beside him. He felt his heart pumping out of his pelt as he followed Redshade through, fearing how he could only wonder that he was being lead to.
He was losing track of his breaths and beginning to pant. Although this wasn't because the cats had broke out into a run - more so the fact that Spiderpaw knew he wasn't ready for what could be coming.
He could barely see the trees around him anymore. Everything around him was quickly turning into a blur.
Minutes went on, and Spiderpaw was nearly convinced he would collapse. The voices became louder and louder.
That was until Spiderpaw realised that the voices weren't just faint callings. He was scared because he could hear fighting.
Spiderpaw raced forwards, but Redshade blocked his path. "You need to be careful," she meowed. "Don't even think about showing yourself if you know what's good for you."
Spiderpaw paused and dipped his head. He knew he couldn't be too safe in this place.
He took a minute to let his head reset and get his breaths back into a semi-normal pace. He checked for Heronkit and was relieved to see the kit had kept up and hadn't run off.
He hated the way Redshade had stopped them behind a thick, leafy wad of undergrowth. The fighting was too clear for him now.
And Spiderpaw urged to curl up and scream.
He could hear Briartail.
He had to keep himself together. The noises were so loud, he could barely hear himself think. He pressed forwards through the undergrowth, so silently that he could hear a mouse sneaking past a cat.
He pushed his head through.
He got a glimpse.
His heart was pounding. Just to keep up with what he was seeing, Spiderpaw clenched his teeth together as he felt a pair of jaws slam down on his tail.
With a simple reflex, Spiderpaw skimmed around and unsheathes his claws, adrenaline pushing through him.
"I don't want you seeing any more," Heronkit pleaded, pulling him back. Spiderpaw loosened himself, but he was right about not being able to be too safe in this place. "Please!" Heronkit begged.
Spiderpaw said nothing. He flicked his tail back around, peering back at the clearing.
Spiderpaw didn't think he had ever felt worse.
Two figures circling one another. He knew exactly who.
He could see his sister gasping for air. She was curled forwards, her teeth bared. She was covered with blood, her fur appeared stained with red. Spiderpaw felt taken aback, his eyes cut off, welling with fear for his sister.
A yowl cut the sky.
Spiderpaw swallowed sheer panic as Briartail leaped forwards. He watched, unable to stop anything as Briartail collided with the white and black tom-cat.
Spiderpaw could barely watch.
Vinetail swiped Briartail's face. Briartail was panting, but she was still fighting ferociously. Vinetail threw himself back at her, but Briartail went in for his neck, pulling back the skin until blood leaked right above his larynx.
"That's a forbidden move!" Spiderpaw whispered. He was stunned.
Redshade nodded emotionlessly. "I know."
Spiderpaw lifted his head. He was stunned to see a slim shadow standing over him.
A icy blue gaze shone, and Spiderpaw could see a figure yelling and screeching for the cats to continue on.
Spiderpaw couldn't take any more.
He got to his paws and leapt forwards.
But all went black.
