Chapter Thirty
The figure watched in rage as the two cats entangled themselves in one another. The figure thought the breeze would be the only thing tonight that made them sick to their stomach.
Anger engulfed them as they peered through the undergrowth, unsheathing their claws and scratching them into the earth. They felt their pelt burn with fire with just the glimmer of the cats through the darkness.
They knew something hadn't been right - that something had been going on behind their back.
And how foolish was he, to not realise I was watching his back the entire time?
Although they couldn't move past the antagonising feeling of betrayal, they longed to know why the cats had chosen to meet at such a strange and unwelcoming place.
Even having found out so much information all for themselves, they longed to know everything. Everything that was going on.
They had to wait a moment until the coast was clear. They watched in disgust as the felines fluttered in the moonlight, padding through the forest so carelessly - so stupidly.
They felt the feeling rush through their paws again, so great that they had to flex out their claws to hold themselves together. Now they knew everything - nearly everything.
Waiting and waiting, they stood silently, not hearing a thing other than the bristling winds that accompanied them. They stood as silent as a stone until the couple had passed through the woodland and of of their sight, and only then did they reveal themselves, stepping gently out of the undergrowth and onto the dark woodland path.
In front of them was the strange shadowy den he had followed the figures to. The cave was engulfed by darkness, and they could barely make out the entrance from where they were standing.
Why didn't they go inside? Why was he so hesitant?
They didn't need to wonder any longer. Silently, they threw themselves towards the mysterious cave, feeling a cold rush as the blades of grass brushed against their paws. Their eyes had to adjust a little to see the mossy entrance, and they approached the area with caution, as carefully and as slowly as a feather falling from a bird.
They noticed the air was chillier only a few fox-lengths closer towards the cave. The entrance was right there, and they felt a strange nerve urging them to just enter - as if they were being called.
Of course, they weren't. Now, they were alone. And once again, they recalled to themselves that now they knew all they had suspected. No bone in their body could portray - no emotion in their pelt could show the hatred they had. But they knew they couldn't let anyone know - not until the truth was out.
Slowly, they slithered through the mossy entrance, tracing their paws carefully across the gravel.
The air around them felt damp.
Their heart raced.
Every hair on their pelt prickled.
Although they couldn't make out every description, the one thing they noticed quicker than anything else was the strange black shape that stood tall in the centre of the lonesome space. Slowly, they crept forwards, as if stalking the last mouse in the forest.
What was this?
And that was the last moment they recalled being in that strange space - until they blacked out the second they got too close.
Nevertheless, they could still see, although their vision was beyond hazy. They thought the night was as dark as the area could get, but the shadows surrounding them reached a limit they didn't know existed.
They couldn't feel the ground beneath their paws any longer. Their mouth felt dry and their paws felt light. Slowly they adjusted, and could barely make out a shallow ground beneath them, and a thin set of darkly shaded paws at their heels.
