Book Club Business

"Alright then, before we get started tonight, we need to make a list," Margaret Bismark told everyone. The wind rolled in coldly as Runa and Kathy entered the foyer at 824 1/2 Winter street. Everyone got a chill and several of the ladies shivered until Kathy shut the door.

"Already?" Betty Chapel asked.

"Yes," Margaret told her, "We will be done with this book by next week and we need to pick out something new."

Runa and Kathy entered the room quietly and took their chairs. Runa did not have a copy of the current book so she just intended to listen to the conversation.

"Alright let's get some suggestions," Sable told them. "And no Fifteen Shades, either."

"Fifty," Katherine told her.

"What?" Sable asked.

"It's Fifty Shades," Kathy said.

"I don't care if it's a million shades," Sable said.

"No," Ellie said. "You don't really want to see this old lady turning fifty shades of red. Let's remember the guidelines. You can discuss those kinds of books on your facebooks."

"There are still books from the last list we haven't read," Valarie Compton said.

"Yes," Pepper agreed. "Can't we just pick from that instead of making a whole new list?"

Several of the women nodded and said yes to that.

"I'm alright with that," Sable told them, "If Margaret is."

Margaret was not only the club secretary; she was the Mayor's secretary. Runa thought it must be strange working for your brother. But she wouldn't know. She didn't have any siblings.

"Whatever," Margaret Bismark said. "Who has the list?"

"I do," Angel Hart said. She pulled the list from a folder she held. "I made a new copy of it so we can just mark right on it."

"Fine," Margaret told her. "Pass it around and everyone vote for just one by making an 'x' by the one you prefer."

Angel began looking at the list and then put a mark on it. She passed it to Valarie Compton next.

"Okay. On to other business," Ellie said. "I would like to welcome our sister Runa back. We are so glad you are feeling better."

Ellie started to clap for Runa and everyone else followed suit.

The night went on with a discussion of their book, followed by a discussion of the town and the school levy that was passed and what that meant for everyone. They discussed who would persuade the school board to fire the principal. Apparently he was not doing a very good job of supporting the girls' athletics program or enforcing the code of conduct when it came to the behavior of some of the male teachers either. Kay Wilkes disagreed. She said he was just young and needed time to learn the job better. So they relented with the stipulation that Kay would keep an eye on things since she was the secretary at the school.

They discussed what needed to be on the next ballot in the spring regarding the city's police, fire and roads, etc. They talked about how to keep big business out of the town to keep things manageable and how to promote tourism at the same time. They talked about certain undesirables who had taken up residence not far from town and what to do about them. Then they talked about the park.
