Chapter Eleven

Where am I? Sagepaw thought. Her head ached, and she was nauseous and tired. Pictures flashed before her mind as she remembered the dreadful place. She shivered and looked around, trying to escape or maybe to not encounter Viperfang. Unfortunately, StarClan was not on her side. A rustling came from behind her as a deep, threatening voice spoke.

"Welcome back, Sagepaw," an evil hiss came from behind her which startled her. He looked at the apprentice. "Are you ready for the next lesson?" the tom meowed as he stalked around her slowly.

"Viperfang, I don't want to play any of your games." She held her head high with confidence while Viperfang stalked around.

He stopped, sitting down in front of her. Viperfang ignored her last comment and continued to speak about the assessment.

"Today, you will be possessing this squirrel I have here." Viperfang meowed, while holding the live animal in his jaw.

"I-" Sagepaw mumbled, too afraid to say anymore. She looked at the helpless squirming squirrel that tried to leap out of Viperfang's jaw.

"Let me show you." He crouched and closed his eyes, his breathing slowing as his body went limp. A squirrel skittered out from a nearby bush, its beady eyes glowing as it blinked at Sagepaw. The prey ran back into the bush, long tail swishing, and Viperfang stood back up in his own body. "You amazed?" as he teleported back out, turning back into himself.

"Nope, I still don't want to participate." Sagepaw replied sharply, turning her head away from the Dark Forest cat.

Viperfang narrowed his eyes at Sagepaw. "It could help you get over the fear of fighting," he suggested with his smooth, silky voice. Sagepaw couldn't resist anymore. It's not disloyal to my Clan... I'm just becoming a better warrior.

Sagepaw loosened her head, "Fine, Viperfang...I'll do it."

"Close your eyes, and crouch. Imagine yourself as a squirrel... see through its eyes." Sagepaw closed her eyes slowly she started to feel that she was getting smaller.

"Is it working?" she asked, wondering if she was doing it correctly. Sagepaw could feel the world shrinking around her, trees growing taller but her own body becoming small.

Viperfang answered, "Yes, it's working perfectly fine."

She opened her eyes and saw grass from a lower point of view.

"Whoa, this is amazing." Sagepaw mumbled in awe. She looked around, she had possessed her first prey.

Whispering started to come from the woods and she turned back to see a few pairs of beady eyes staring at her.

Why are they here? Why are they chasing me? She asked herself as she ran, scared of dying. The cats were fast, they would be on top of her in a heartbeat. They were big, way bigger than she was. She remembered that she was forced to posses the prey. She cursed Viperfang under her breath. Sagepaw kept running, starting to feel scared of dying, hatred for the cats who were chasing her, and love for her family. I'm I feeling bad for the prey? she asked herself. She climbs up a tree and the cats stop chasing her.

"I'm okay," she whispered, and she gradually turns back to herself.

Viperfang walks up to the tree, and speaks to Sagepaw, "You done well, apprentice."

Sagepaw eyes shook in fear, tears filled her eyes. Viperfang looked towards her, "What's wrong?" he asked.

"I just felt bad for the squirrel." she replied, the tears blurring her vision. "The cats... they were going to kill me."

"You are a cat! You always eat squirrels, that's how you survive!" Viperfang retorted.

Sagepaw nodded, "I'm sorry for letting you down again Viperfang..." and the she-cat started to fade away and awake in the real world.
