'I would have devoured you.'
'In your dreams.'
Jack is studying by candlelight for the fourth time this week; Not even bothering to put try the lights as he gets home. He knows he hasn't paid the electricity bill and with his little income and having to pick and choose which basic needs he wishes to have for the week - who can blame him. Jack is fully aware he needs to get some better form of income rather than working at the college library as it pays particularly in buttons. However, its not as easy as that when he isn't flexible at all with hours due to how much hes drowning in this course. His parents paid their retirement money for him to be here, he cannot and will not fail. Besides; being the small kid in the big city was always a dream of his and hell or high water is he going back home without a degree in his hands.
And yet the earth seems to be against him today when he gets a knock at the door and has to pray it isn't his landlord telling him the rents due because that really would be all he needs. However its instead a very heavy breathing man who seems to be holding his neck and stumbling around - Jack manages to catch him and bring him into his room which is in full darkness, the hassle causing his candle to blow out. Eventually, once the man is now seated upon his chair he re-lights the candle and gets a sort of clear view of the mans features - and his blooded neck.
Hes perhaps younger than Jack - with brunette hair and the eyes to match. Jack thinks hes seen the boy around campus a few times or at the coffee shop Jack finds himself in but can't order anything and instead just uses it to study in actual lighting. But, hes breathing heavy and Jack is making some sort of conversation whilst he rakes for some sort of medical supply which will help in this strange situation.
"I was attacked by some kind of creature." He murmurs into the dark and Jack is suddenly very,very curious.
The college student manages to find some bandages and helps clean the boys who he remembers name is Ethan, wound. The boy tells him he thinks he was followed, and after Jacks concerned gaze offers to call the police in the morning - which he's grateful for. The wound once cleaned looks more like a bite than anything else but Ethan was bleeding for a long time for just a bite, Jack wonders what kind of freak creature attacked him and why.
Eventually Ethan leaves, but gives Jack twenty dollars to pay his electricity bill; Jack did refuse but Ethan insisted it was the least he could do with Jack taking him in and helping him clean the wound. Jack tells him to stay safe on his way home and hes too sleepy to continue his studies by candlelight. He'll get electricity in the morning, before he has to dash to his first class.
;
Ethan and him become good friends after that, when Jack appears in the coffee shop eyes glued to his screen as he prays blank pages will just magically become filled in front of him, Ethan slides him free coffee with a soft smile and perhaps its from one broke student to another - Jack thinks.
Jack finds him in the library at unusual student hours, checking out numerous books on vampires, Jack guesses hes into fantasy - a category Jack would not have placed him in; working here hes seen lots of different students and he can usually guess which book they'll check out but he never predicated that for the shy looking boy. Mind you, Jack also loves his fair share of fantasy novels so he doesn't blame him. They exchange smiles and Ethan is off, books in hand.
In the same shift, he returns; hair messier than it was before but he bangs the large books back onto the table, the same ones he checked out - Jack raises an eyebrow, that's a lot to read in one day he ponders.
"Do you need a roommate?" Ethan asks, out of the blue. Jack thinks for a moment, that yes - it would be easier to have somebody living in the small apartment as to help with the bills but hes never got along with someone among campus to have them living with him. Maybe it'd mean less study sessions by candlelight.
"I could use one." Jack utters, college is a wild ride as it is so he may as well share it with someone else. Besides, the pair work a lot so they wouldn't see each other all that often and Jack doubts they'd clash anyway.
;
Jack is eating cup noodles as he stares at the textbook which still hasn't made any sense at all since he opened it, he thought that maybe just maybe if he stared at it for awhile it'd end up making more sense to him but alas nothing.
Ethan is sat across from him, head deep in another vampire book which he checked out at the library upon Jacks shift. Ethan seems to have a fascination with vampires and Jack thinks the library is running out of vampire books that he hasn't read. Jacks always preferred werewolves as his fantasy creature of choice, something about vampires and the forever life thing has never sat well with the man. He'd hate to outlive everyone around him and blood has always creeped him out a bit.
"Do you believe in vampires?" Ethan utters out of the blue, startling Jack slightly and he ponders if he heard the question right but judging by Ethan's awaiting stare he assumes he has.
"No." Jack murmurs with almost no room for argument. Vampires aren't real, Jacks sure he'd know if they were by now.
"What if I could prove it?" Ethan sits up, placing his book down and is all confidence. Jack tilts his head like a confused puppy at him because he sure is lost as to where his roommate is going with this and if all the books hes reading has got to him.
"Look, Ethan - no amount of conspiracy's will change my mind, there's no such thing as vampires." Jack looks at him sternly but Ethans rising and somehow Jack knows this is the start of trouble.
;
And it is.
Jack has a sinking feeling in his gut as they enter some underground place which is crowded of fairly normal looking people and Jacks beginning to wonder if Ethan is gonna tell him hes a vampire next. Jacks heart is beating; the beats thumping in his ears as he continues to follow Ethan, trying to swallow his gut feelings telling him to run in the other direction, past all the countless rather shady looking faces.
But Jack comes face to face with an old room, with computers scattered around the joint and it almost looks pulled out of a movie about detectives - post it notes pinned to the walls as well as countless articles and various looking research littering the place. A large screen in the center, turned off at the moment. Its when Ethan finally says something, the first thing hes uttered since he dragged Jack out their now shared dorm, to wherever this movie scene looking place is.
"I'm a hunter, a monster hunter. When I arrived almost dying at your doorstep it was because a vampire attacked me." Ethan is staring right now the very depths of his soul, as if hes preaching to some choir there, and everything he says isn't unbelievably absurd.
Jack stares almost through the man, in disbelief as to what hes saying.
"I don't understand." Ethan comes closer now as Jack takes a step back - although he isn't imtimidating at all; Jack is slightly worried for him.
"Join me. Vampires have free will, I want to destroy that." Jack really cannot believe what hes hearing.
"You want me to join your crazy committee? Ethan you're mad. Vampires aren't real!"
But the man looks so certain of himself; Adamant he was attacked by an actual vampire and seeking revenge. Hes got so wrapped up in between chapters, hes lost it - Jack thinks. What has he gotten himself into, living with somebody who has a beyond-fascination with vampires.
;
Things go from absurd to just downright insane and Jack could not tell you how, but hes out during unholy hours with Ethan as they hunt for vampires, and maybe Jacks curiosity outweighs him common sense and maybe that's why hes here.
"Since you don't believe in vampires, you can be bait." Jack doesn't even get a second to talk back as Ethan is pushing him into some darkened alleyway and wondering off - he wants to yell back, tell him he doesn't want any trouble but he supposes its far, far too late for that now.
The alleyway seems to stretch on for almost ever it seems, the darkness not passing as Jack walks down, mumbling to himself to occupy his thoughts - the gravel is crunching beneath him and its somewhat comforting until it isn't his feet causing the noise rather, someone else's.
Part of him believes it's just Ethan, trying to scare him and that this whole vampire charade is merely a shitty prank on his new roommate but alas; Jack wouldn't be that lucky.
The figure is tall and Jack only sees ivory-like skin and hears a faint hissing before the person, thing; pounces upon Jack catching him off guard and he stares before hypnotized eyes - a piercing gaze digging into the depths of his soul just like Ethan make in that room, trying to convince him that the very thing atop him now, are real. Making Jack almost want to confess to every lie hes ever told in his life, to apologize for all the mistakes hes ever made under such a gaze. The creature, Jack presumes is a vampire; the way its breathing over him to the rhythm of his own pulse, sharp teeth ready to sink into whatever they can -
is when Ethan springs out of seemingly nowhere.
He strikes the vampire at the back of its head and it lets out a sharp hiss of pain before its getting off Jack and running away; Ethan looked like he was ready to do more than strike the vampire but never got the chance too. Jack feels like bricks have been lifted from his entire body, like the vampire weighed a ton.
"Now do you believe me?" Ethan utters offering a hand to which Jack accepts shaken, as if he hadn't expected things to happen in such ways, although he was the one that thrusted Jack into the night as he called it 'bait.' Jack could throttle Ethan, if it weren't for the fact he was struggling to logic his way out of this one.
;
The pair are sat in the slightly light dorm room, Jack asking a thousand and one questions about vampires and still trying to make sense of it all - deny what he saw and witnessed earlier on in the night. His mind is reeling, spinning trying to work out some way as to how the creature was just a human but that gaze, Jack knows was inhumane. Maybe he doesn't want to admit to himself Ethan and his crazy talk was right.
"Join me, Jack." Ethan utters, cutting Jack of mid-sentence (not that it was really a sentence or that the man was saying something different since the pair got home, it was more of just a mumbling mess of words mixed in with a question or two.)
"Pays well." Ethan finishes; smug as if he knows hes caught Jacks attention and has him backed against a wall. For a shy barista and college student, he sure can be convincing.
"Fine. I'll do a trial run, just to see if these vampires are actually the real deal." Ethan rolls his eyes at the statement, knowing too well Jack seen the truth tonight but extends a hand nonetheless to seal the deal.
The pair shake on it; and Jack starts his hunting days whenever the opportunity rises.
;
Jacks first hunt is no less than a few nights later and Jack is nervous. Hes with Ethan, who seems to know exactly where hes going and the Irishman wonders if the man has been here before. The streetlights are bright above the two, shadows reflecting onto the street before them as they make their way to wherever they're going, Jack doesn't bother to make light conversation, figuring it isn't the time for it.
Ethan stops in his tracks and Jack almost bumps into the back off him, stopping abruptly and the silence is suffocating as they hear considerbly loud footprints.
Close, close, closer;
Ivory skin is the first thing Jack sees and the second is dark red blood dripping from sharp teeth curled into a smirk, eyeing up the two - obviously not realizing one of them happens to be a hunter.
Ethan strikes fast, banishing the vampire to whatever realm of hell it came from and it leaves Jacks heart racing and a buzz through his veins - although he never did anything, seeing Ethan pounce such ways with revenge deep in his irises, made him feel alive. Maybe that's when he should have turned back.
He didn't.
;
The thrill of the hunt is more than Jack could have ever imagined, the job pays well indeed, as hes able to pay more than half of the expenses he has with Ethan - and the pair make a mean duo together. Jacks course is coming to an end and hes passing tests with flying colours. He'll return home in a few weeks with the degree in his motherfucking hands; hands coated with vampire blood or whatever liquid they produce when they face Jack and a stake.
The creatures have tormented humans enough, Jack thinks. Ethan could have died to one of their hands - never again. Being a hunter is more than carrying stakes and hissing curses, its adrenaline and glory.
Jack hasn't met his match yet, and his trial expanded long ago - now hes just a hunter hes sure everyone has heard about.
Him and Ethan even have competitions as to who can hunt the most vampires in a month, they're tied with one and other at the moment. The pair ready to answer when the call comes.
When the call does come, its for Jack - and he fixes his jacket before leaving Ethan and promising him he'll buy him dinner on the way back.
;
Jack is yet to meet his match against vampires, hes had a few rough and tumble fights but nothing serious - but tonight, tonight he does.
He clashes with a very important vampire, one who is dark and brooding - one which won't take any chances or let him make rookie mistakes that he often does on the job, a vampire that hasn't just been around for decades but rather centuries. Although Jack is young and cocky; nothing can beat experience, something this very vampire oozes and perhaps hes tired of all these hunters being sent to kill him just because hes among the un-dead. It isn't like he choose to outlive everyone hes ever loved; He just has.
The vampire in question goes by the name Mark (In this decade, anyway.)
His raven hair is swept the side, fangs tucked in as he walks the night; always helped clear his head and seeing as he has nobody to go back to at his Victorian era house (one of his favorite era's), he usually just stays out until sun rise. Hes had his feed and doesn't need to harm anybody else for the night - Marks calm enough; the demon asking for blood fed and silenced.
Until, he gets attacked by a hunter and at this point, they're more like leeches than a real threat.
The young looking brown haired Mark almost wants to say boy, yields a stake and Mark is already shrugging him off - strength from his latest feed being drawn upon as he shoves him away, uttering a warning. Of course, Marks fresh out of luck as the hunter gets up with a chuckle and is back at him again.
They tussle, the hunter nearly getting the best of Mark and knocking him off his feet before Mark finally gives up and unleashes all of the strength or maybe its tiredness, he slams the hunter against the gravelly path; it crunching with the force and Mark punches the hunter across the face, satisfied as the blood trails down from it.
His fangs which he really tried not to use brought out as his irises flicker from hazel to the bright red and Mark thinks he didn't feed the blood hungry demon within him well enough.
Hazel. Hes letting out a warning.
Red. Fangs drawing closer to the neck of the hunter - 'Pathetic. What kind of hunter are you?'
Chilling words that make the hunter beneath him shiver as he hisses back at him, making the vampire laugh.
Hazel. The hunter is struggling to breathe underneath him, kicking and spitting curse after curse at him.
Red. Mark laughs once again, at the futile attempt by the young hunter and hes closer to his neck as he smells the young blood flowing through the boys veins along with the slight smell of fear. If Mark wasn't dead, this would make him feel alive.
"What do you want?" Is the accented plea he receives.
"I want to kill you-"
Hazel.
"I want you to stop hunting my kind, kid. If I see you around here again causing trouble I will kill you."
Its stuttered through gritted teeth and perhaps its taken more strength to remain in control than it has to beat this hunter but he hopes the warning does something and then hes gone, as quick as he arrived - off into the night to find something to feed on again after using all the strength he had.
;
Jack returns to his dorm, food in hand for Ethan as he promised and words ringing in his ears from the raven haired vampire he let go - angry that he did but reconsidering this hunting thing; perhaps he has got to addicted to the adrenaline and thrill - not releasing vampires were humans once too and that they lived just like Jack is.
Ethan notices it, its hard not to when hes sat in the kitchen staring at nothing as he eats the food he brought home. Hes about to ask how the hunt went before Jack cuts him off.
"I think I'm finished this hunting thing now." Jack utters; a million and one excuses racing through his mind.
Ethan nods slowly, a question on his lips.
"Guilt." Jack murmurs and Ethan wants to laugh.
"They're already dead, Jack."
"But they lived once. They exist." Jack utters knowing the words fall on deaf ears, expecting as much from Ethan. He rolls his eyes; ready to lecture him, Jack supposes.
"Well, don't come back to me when some vampire kills ya." Ethan states, getting up from the table - chair squeaking as he heads to bed. Jack was expecting more of a fight.
;
He never hunted another vampire since, hadn't had any trouble from vampires or any other creatures that might wonder the earth alongside him - the knowledge still not forgotten, though. After returning home (degree in hands, god bless) he hasn't seen Ethan since but he hopes he stopped hunting but Jack doubts it.
Maybe he'll meet the raven haired vampire that made him think twice, made him change his mind and give up the thrill - somewhere else, someplace he can thank him, apologies for all the vampires he had slain in the addictive frenzy he was in.
Who knows. Maybe they'll meet again, in some bar along the way.
