(155) Nurses, rings and needles.

Awl111 requested a nurse type AU with Bob and Wade added, so here it is! I kinda like the idea of Nurse Mark so might write more of that in future. Thanks for everything <33

In Marks profession, he sees a lot of people and faces pass often. So you could say that the people and faces sort of bleed into one and other and that it can be hard to remember people unless they have unusual or just downright bizarre injures because hell, hes seen enough people and enough injuries to do him a lifetime. Being a nurse wasn't always in his mind growing up but he had always wanted to help people in some way and he sort just fell into this job, studying health related subjects at college. He had considered perhaps a firefighter but realized quickly he couldn't cope with that kind of stress; Its so different to what he does here. He also thought that being a nurse would turn his stomach considering all the needles, blood and vomit involved but hes got better as time went on and now he has to say he has an iron stomach and nothing surprises him anymore.

One face he does recognize though is that of his long time friend Wade -laying on one of the hospital beds in Marks clinic with a nasty gnash on his head which seems to be still bleeding as well as Marks high school friend and on wards and Wades partner, Bob. Bob seems to have a look of displeasure on his features probably because of the blood and the fact Wade seems pretty calm. Mark brings the curtain around the bed and grabs his clipboard.

"Fancy seeing you here, how did this happen?" Mark wants to make sure that the gnash isn't too deep and that Wade doesn't have any further head injuries and is competent enough to answer questions. There does not seem to be any immediate signs of concussion but he just wants to be sure. If anything, Mark prides himself in being thorough and putting a smile upon his patients faces.

"I was fell from a ladder and landed on it." Wade utters, wincing slightly at the memory and Mark thinks this injury is so typically Wade, the man is unbelievably clumsy.

Mark decides the man needs stitches for the gnash and is just about to begin when the curtain is pulled back to reveal an all too familiar face with a cup of coffee in each hand.

"You know when I said you should visit me at work more this wasn't what I meant, dearest." Mark laughs, all to happy to see his partner here; sometimes in a job like this you just need familiar faces although Mark would much rather they all stopped by to bring him lunch than injured. Hes assuming that Jack drove the pair here seeing as none of them drive themselves.

Jack smiles handing a cup of coffee to Bob, probably to take some of the edge off and then takes a sip from his cup.

"How bad is it?" Jack asks, Irish drole laced with slight concern.

"Not too bad, just needs some stitches and Wade will be good to go."

Jack seems to go a little pale at the thought of it and murmurs a 'I'm out.' before shutting the curtain and leaving Mark to it. You'd think that because he's dating a nurse he'd be less squeamish but it just isn't the case.

Mark finishes stitching Wade up and he seems in better shape, less shaken than he was. Bob thanks him a bunch too and Mark reminds the pair that this is his job and its not a big deal.

"Remember to come back in four to five days so I can remove the stitches." Mark utters before the pair are walking off and he can hear Bob lecturing the man to be more careful.

;

When Wade returns, he looks a lot less queasy than he did and Bob is attached to his hip looking slightly less displeased at his partner. The stitches are not infected and Mark removes them easily but before he gets to leave, Mark asks the pair to help. Truth is, he can treat all kinds of injuries from broken leg to concussion and everything in between but when it comes to something like proposing and being romantic hes hopeless. He figured he could get tips from the pair of them seeing as Wade did propose to Bob awhile back.

Jack and Mark were college sweethearts and started out as study buddies. Hell, Mark wouldn't have gotten through college without Jack and its been years since then, Jacks been there through it all, the stress of waiting on his results that would give Mark his career here and hes watched Jack become the absolute intelligent man that he is today. Hes still studying as he isn't sure which subject he wants to turn into a career. It was Mark that gave him reassurance that it was okay not to know which path he wanted to take and he had encouraged the man to continue his studies and hes glad he is.

"How do I propose to Jack?" Mark asks, straight to the point. Which causes Wade to let out a not so manly screech and Mark panics.

"What?! Are you okay-" There's the nurse side shining as always, he thinks.

"Yes! You want to propose!" Wade is like a high school girl who has just had her life long ship made real and Bob is the voice of reason speaking up;

"Do something romantic. Take him out for dinner, go stargazing - something fancy." Marks taking mental notes in his head as the pair share ideas more among themselves that with Mark and soon he has to wave them goodbye as he does have a job to do.

Romantic and fancy, got it. Mark murmurs although he totally doesn't got it. Dealing with needles and blood is much easier than proposing.

;

Mark is sat across from a half asleep looking Jack as they eat heated up Chinese food under the dim light of Marks kitchen. Hes just home from working the night shift and its ungodly hours - but Jack still waited up for him and it made his heart swell when he seen the man almost set fire to the place trying to re heat the food for him. They're speaking about nonsense - something like what they'd put up with each other doing.

"What if I brought you a human heart and gave you it? You know, as a sign of my love." Mark utters through a mouthful of food which gets a grossed out looked from Jack followed by soft laughter which goes straight through Marks actual heart.

"Gross, like some kind of cat bringing a dead bird to your door. But I suppose I could deal with that." Jack jumps onto the nearest counter, feet dangling from it as he hums. Mark can't himself as he looks too adorable sat there, he finds himself almost drawn to the man and kisses his forehead.

"Is breá liom tú."

Mark murmurs against Jacks forehead. I love you in Irish, spoken so softly it could have almost been missed. Mark had learned it as a sort of comfort for the man, to remind him of home and it had stuck ever since. He never uttered it all the time in Irish but every now and then he does so. Marks mind is reeling at all the things he could do to propose but there's so many choices and he isn't sure if Jack would like anything to over the top or if he wants something casual. Mark really is absolutely hopeless.

;

But all plans for a romantic candle lit proposal go out the window when Jack is rushed into his clinic with nurses surrounding him and Mark swears he can hear his own heartbeat inside his ears, Jack looks unconscious and there blood and bruises littering his features. This is when Marks training for years comes in handy as they all began work to assess the love of his lives injuries. It appears he was in some form of accident, perhaps at some speed too and Marks heart is hurting - he just wants to reach for the mans hand and whisper to him that its going to be okay but he and all the other nurses around him have to remain professional and do their job. The nurses asked him if Mark is sure he wants to treat Jack due to their personal connection and Mark more than insisted he would. He trusts all his other co workers but it feels only right for Mark to take care of Jack. He may not have said it allowed but he made a promise to himself long ago he'd do whats right by Jack always.

The man in question opens his beautiful blues and it takes him a moment to focus on the hospital lights above him and to draw his eyes to the nurses including Mark himself around him; there's fear and confusion across his features - Marks soft voice reassures him and stills him to keep still, that hes been in an accident but hes safe now, though the nurses need to work out exactly whats happened and the extent of his injuries.

"I love you." is breathed heavily, slurred words Mark can't help but recognize, words hes used to hearing but with not as much weight to them; like a desperate call, words gripping out and grabbing Mark by his heart strings.

Its when the nurses realizing Jack is littered with glass stuck here and there - which needs to be removed immediately that its Marks job to distract him and hes rambling about his job also trying to make sure the man doesn't pass out from pain or shock. Mark can see the large piece of glass the nurse is working on to remove from Jacks leg and he sees the flinch and the flash of pain and then a question is falling from his lips before he can stop himself.

"Jack? Marry me?" One nurse that isn't poking about, looks baffled Mark just asked that as the man is laying struggling to breathe and Jack sputters as he hears the question.

"Yes." Jack utters just as the shard of glass is removed and his whimper of pain isn't as bad as it perhaps would've been. Perhaps its the bright lights, or the situation; but Mark might have to ask Jack when he's less in pain but somehow his yes, here is enough.

;

The man needs to stay in hospital for about a week or so to be monitored and Mark is by his side every day, bringing him lunch and sneaking him snacks or strong coffee when he needs. Hes too worried to bring up the whole proposal thing as he spends his lunch break with his favorite patient. It still hurts to see Jack in such a sorry state but Jack being Jack, hes always got something positive to say or other.

"So when are we getting married?" Jack murmurs as he struggles to open his packet of crisps. Mark nearly spits out his tea at how casual Jack brings the topic which hasn't left Marks mind so easily.

"Whenever you want." Mark states nervously as he brings the ring hes had in his medical wear pocket since he was thinking about proposing, out. He nearly lost it several times but thankfully one of his older patients picked it up and brought it to him as she uttered

"Shes a lucky girl." Mark almost corrected her but decided not too.

Jacks eyes light up as they glue onto the small red box in Marks hands. He opens it slightly and gets on one knee in front of Jacks bed.

"Since you're fully conscious, Jack - Will you make me the happiest nurse alive and marry me?"

The man laughs slightly and yells the loudest yes Marks ever heard, probably waking some of the others being treated here but Mark just can't find it in himself to care as he hugs the man softly, careful of his injuries.

;

Sometimes the ring on his finger is the only thing that gets him through the hardest days. Mark sees so many people, so many people in pain and when you lose a patient, its a burden you never really get used too. Marks head is swirling as he turns the key to his home, to find Jack plating some food up like usual on these late shifts and its something familiar and stable Mark needs. When a patient dies, it isn't just them that goes its a part of everybody else too, including part of the nurses like Mark today who fought for their lives. Mark knows that all too well and sometimes he feels like its not enough because if he had done enough the patient would still be here.

Tears litter his eyes as he stares at everything hes grateful for; his husband standing in his jumper which is almost down to his knees looking more than sleepy as he sets the plates of food down.

"Mark?" He utters; as he sees the tears roll down the mans cheeks and hes there immediately opening his arms in a warm embrace that seems to put the day to rest. Mark, in his profession is always reminded at how temporary time can be and it makes him more grateful for the things he has. Hell, he may not be the richest man on the planet regarding wealth but he thinks in health and love he is.

"I love you so much." Mark utters into Jacks shoulder and he hears the soft I love you too back; and he feels the ache in his bones ease.
