(148) Funny Fates, Soulmates and Petals.
120,000 Reads, that is bizarre and beyond comparison. Thank you so so much, I'm privileged to be able to do this and have people enjoy and have non stop support. Sorry for no upload last week, I was sick and travelling to meet Autumn and see Markiplier - which by the way, was amazing.
This one shot combines two of my favorite ever prompts - Soulmate black and white world type and hanahaki disease. I took my own spin to both and hope it isn't over complex. Requests are open :D
The world is black and white with the occasional grey - until you meet the one who has been chosen for you and then the world is a flurry of color.
Mark meets his soulmate but falls for another.
Hanahaki; A disease caused by one sided love, or when you are separated from the one who has been chosen for you for too long. Can be cured by surgery.
;
"I chose you!" Mark almost yells, voice cracking like the static of an old off tv. Jack wants to believe him; he does but he cant shake the demon that's sitting upon his shoulder telling him the man with raven hair is lying just to spare his feelings, spare his ego. She has always gotten in the way of things. Mark refuses to believe it.
Jealousy really is a green eyed monster and yet so is anxiety; both of which Jack experiences and it eats him whole.
It started with words 'She was my soulmate'; ones that cut like a damn knife, words which lingered in his brain for a long time until he had snapped about it. It had broken his heart too - of course it had.
She was his original soulmate not the one that brought color to Marks world, but the one that brought happiness.
What if Jacks just the color barer? In this world, does that really make you someones soulmate anymore? Hell, he didn't even think he had a shot at the soulmate thing until a few weeks ago when the world had brought them together, after suffering from the coughed up flower petals and the sleepless nights with faceless people in them. He was even considering the surgery for fucks sake.
She, is a beautiful brunette-turned blonde by the name of Amy. Marks ex-fiancee to be exact, who he thought was his soulmate and not just because they were engaged, no. This universe works in funny ways.
;
The world is black and white - until you cross paths with your soulmate and its an explosion of color and wonder. Suddenly you get to see your features in the mirror; black eyes turned hazel, hair become vibrant rather than just standard black and white;
Everything you ever know becomes vibrant and almost real. Mark and Amy had met at college but so had Mark and Jack, only Amy and Mark got to know each other and as they did the world had became colorful - Mark had thought that Amy was his soulmate but a twisted turn of fate and that was not the case.
Since Mark had met Amy and Jack around the same time (He hadn't actually met Jack, just helped him clean up his spilled coffee in the hallway.) Mark thought that it was Amy who caused the color reaction and since she had seen color too, it just made sense. Alas, they had both met their soulmates just at different times. But it had felt like love too; maybe it was the illusion of love - Mark doesn't know, hes still trying to wrap his head around it. He had crossed paths with his actual soulmate and mistaken them for somebody else, had asked somebody else to marry him.
You gain the ability to see color when you meet your soulmate, yet you lose that ability when your soulmate passed or for Marks case, when your actual soulmate had a brush with death.
;
It started out a normal day, Mark heading to his class with a full red backpack which almost felt like it was breaking his spine. Amy was at her job at the cute little art shop across town - the one where they had laughed for so long when one of her paintings looked wildly like something else, one which is framed somewhere in their home [To each new guest he says to say, no its art, I promise.]
And it was the lesson closest to lunch when the color from everyday objects started to fade and panic set in. He had to be excused immediately from his lesson, running out the door as fast as possible.
Amy was in trouble he knew; and decided to head to her work and see; the color seemed to be fading in and out -- dots of black and white littering across his vision. The yellow flowers along the grass turning black - the neon sign of the art shop fading. Mark opened the door to find Amy, still painting and fine.
She had seen his face, how panicked and worried he looked and asked him if he was okay - He asked her if she could still see color fine and she nodded. Seeing her, here fine had been a small comfort. Yet he began to wonder if he was actually losing his vision, since Amy was fine and she could still see things in color.
Something didn't feel right. Something was off.
;
Machines beeping was what Jack had woken up too as well as a very painful headache. There's color about the hospital, his bandages stained with darkened blood and the tubes attached to him had small patches of green. He sighs, still no sign of his soulmate whom had given him the gift of seeing the world in color but no way of thanking them or getting to know them.
Something Jack can only dream of - he thinks hes met too many people to know who exactly it is and hes sort of given up on that fact, he just hopes wherever his soulmate is, that they aren't too worried.
His main concern though is living through all this. A nurse comes in upon seeing him awake and she smiles softly at him; she tells him not to panic but he was hit at some speed by a car and that he has severe concussion and they're running tests to see about his spine and legs but he'll need intense physiotherapy to strength his legs regardless.
Its a lot to digest and he wishes Felix was here to cheer him up; Felix is his best friend since god knows how long; a lucky soul who go to meet his soulmate who comes in the form of an Italian girl with beautiful and newly dyed pink hair. Jacks happy he can see in color like seeing how excited he was about her hair and how Felix's eyes lit up too.
Hes sure once the news breaks his parents will be here as will Felix. The nurse is kind at least but hes really craving a coffee right now.
Sure enough his parents come through with Felix and they all look worried. Jack assures him he feels okay other than the headache and the nurses explain everything to them. He just wants to get out of here though.
;
He is able to leave the hospital a night after, Felix giving him an ear bashing for leaving so early but the Swede knows Jack hates hospitals and hates people fussing over him even more. He'll have churches for a little while until well, he finds his feet again. There's a small scar above his eyebrow now, perhaps a permanent reminder of what had happened. The driver didn't even fucking stop - Jack could have died and the driver didn't even have the decency to make sure they hadn't killed someone.
Jack assures everyone that hes fine and it doesn't bother him all that much but it does and he tenses at the sounds of cars zooming by. It makes his chest tighten and the crash haunts his dreams; hes had a few nightmares that it was his soulmate who had nearly killed him - his mind swarms.
He hopes his soulmate isn't too worried, and hopes they know he isn't actually dead. Jack isn't sure he will ever find them.
;
Marks having trouble sleeping. Usually he sleeps peaceful next to his fiancee; warm and comfortable but lately, he ends up waking up during the night and crashing on the couch. Amy leaves him notes for when he does eventually wake and it makes his heart swell but also there's guilt there. He cant stop thinking about why he had black and white patterns in his vision -- Hes been caught in research about it all, sometimes the color fades due to your soulmate being in trouble or near death but that didn't make sense either, Amy was safe and sound that day.
Then he had discover those articles about 'soulmate confusion' where the people they weren't with hadn't activated the color, instead somebody they had passed or met someplace and eventually by some means they were brought together. That's been playing upon Marks mind lately. When Amy and he had first met there had been something that's undeniable yet, it hadn't in the beginning sat well with him and eventually he just shook it off.
Marks trying to make a list of all the people he had met that day but his memory is foggy - hes also look down notes of symptoms people experience. Turns out that if you have met your soulmate and you end up with the wrong person, after a certain time you begin to feel unwell and in severe cases suffer Hanahaki.
Mark always thought Hanahaki disease was for one-sided love, those who have met their soulmate but their soulmate didn't want them back - it can happen, Marks read the heartbreaking stories. But meeting your soulmate and not having them in your life can have serious effects - like the body is telling you, you need them.
The world had chosen them just for you after all and for you not to have them with you hurts physically and mentally. Those who suffer one-sided love the Hanahaki is surgically removed which also remove the romantic feelings for the one causing said Hanahaki and they can find new love but it means someone, somewhere can be left without their real soulmate.
Mark knew that soulmates were important but didn't realize the consequences when separated from them.
He shakes the thought off, theres no way Amy isn't his soulmate, they're good together. It was just his eye sight being weird because he had forgotten his glasses the day.
The worlds not that against him, is it?
;
Jack was the first one to experience Hanahaki. It was after his physio for the day, hes getting close to his final appointment and hes come leaps and bounds from the accident all those months ago.
It was as he was walking out the hospital when he felt sickly and started coughing uncontrollably. Panic set in when he saw the bright red flower petals coming from his mouth, now in his hands. He wanted to cry. He still hadn't found the one who had triggered the color reaction and it seems it had finally caught up to him. The world is cruel sometimes, there are days he does wish he had known who his beloved was and then others not - but right now with the petals in his palms; hes praying he crosses paths with them soon, whoever they are.
But he knows the world doesn't just bring your soulmate to your door. He just hopes the hanahaki doesn't get too bad.
;
Marks feeling it too. There hasn't been petals yet, but god knows flowers seem to haunt him everywhere he goes and hes been distant from Amy - He doesn't want to hurt her but hes hurting too, thinking she isn't his real soulmate and not knowing what to believe. Mark cant talk about the wedding plans anymore. Hes had dreams though, petals of all colors falling around him and blue eyes here and there - its a mess. He wakes up sweating and coughing, just waiting for the petals to show up. He feels off lately, like something is missing; a sinking feeling Mark can't shake in the pit of his stomach.
Its late hours when Amy finally confronts him and he knows its been a long time coming and has tried his best to avoid this; avoid the shouting and the tears.
It starts with a soft and gentle whats going on and escalates from there. Mark is honest and open - he has to be. This is haunting him and he cant deny it any longer.
"You don't think we're soulmates?" She asks, Mark can hear the hurt in her voice.
"...No, I'm sorry. I think there's been a mix up. I'm not your soulmate either." Mark didn't ever think he'd ever utter those words to Amy. Its painful for him too.
"But the color reaction?" She asks, almost desperate.
"Caused by somebody else. That's why I had almost lost it that day my... real soulmate, was dying." Mark assumes his soulmate is still living at least he hopes they are, he can still see in color.
Amy sits down and he rages at him, tears streaming down her face and voice cracking as she raises it.
The night ends with a thrown ring, slammed door and a lot guilt.
Mark hopes he did the right thing. Hopes, prays, the cruel world somehow unites him with his real soulmate after playing with his feelings for so long and causing borderline Hanahaki.
;
Felix has been bugging Jack about the Hanahaki since he had witnessed an episode of it. Jack was trying to avoid that but his eyes went wide as soon as he had seen the petals. He tried to hide it too but Felix being Felix he didn't drop it, not by a fucking long shot. He had insisted he helped Jack find his soulmate and Jack shrugged him off saying about the surgery and that is probably when all hell broke loose.
Felix had told him that surgery had to be an utterly last option, Jack hadn't even tried to find his soulmate and the man argued it was no use, how many faces had he passed not knowing if it was them or not? Besides, its been years. Even If his soulmate is out there, they'll be long gone, living a happy soulmate-less life just like Jack is with the side effects.
But Felix pursued and Jack gave in, The bastard knows him too well, knows how to get him to just give up. They had come to a deal give it two entire months to find his soulmate and if they couldn't then he'd go ahead with the surgery. (2 more months of suffering, as Jack called it.) Felix would find Jacks soulmate even if it called for posters or news interviews or some shit, seeing Jack cough so violently and then the beautiful petals end up in his palms not long after pained him.
The world was telling him to find his soulmate, he had too. Not a matter of choice anymore - Felix's tells him, and he agrees but doesn't tell the man that.
;
There was a time when Jack had believed in destiny and fate but as he grew older, that belief dwindled. Everybody around him falling in love and enjoying the color, Jack just has one of those luxuries.
Yet, maybe the world does have something to do with fate.
Its a dragged out train ride to a high school reunion (another thing Felix had just convinced him to go too.) When they clash, its been a month since the soulmate deal with Felix. Jack spots the familiar raven hair but its the hazel eyes that catch his attention, the only face he recognizes here.
"Mark?" He almost yells to the man who isn't even a foot away from him, it snaps the man from his trance like state and he turns around to meet baby blues he hasn't seen since well, college.
The train seems brighter for some reason; Its probably just Marks vision though.
"Jack?" There is no mistaking those eyes though or the way he smiles just like he had when Mark helped him clean up his coffee and spoke to him about college life. Its strange the pair had gone to both college and high school together but never really shared anything other than a few glances and some notes. Yet he can still recognize his eyes anywhere.
Mark takes a seat next to him and after a brief introduction to Felix - former class clown, they begin speaking.
The ride is much quicker from then on.
;
The reunion is spent mostly with Mark whilst Felix goes around telling everyone what he thought and thinks of them - no barrier in the way other than being polite for the sake of it. Jack laughs, its what he had said he would do but Jack didn't think he would. Felix and high school never got along mind you. But apart from a few hellos and small talk, its been most Mark Jack has been chatting away too, it feels nice to finally speak to him. Jack never got the chance too, he was always with that blonde haired girl who gave him daggers from across class.
They end up on the topic of soulmates and such. Jack is the one to bring it up, he isn't sure why - its not something he is fond of speaking about. Yet with Mark it just goes that way and Jack sees the sadness in his eyes when he asks and immediately scolds himself for doing so.
"I thought I did but after losing some of my color I realized she wasn't my soulmate. Its a long story - but no, how about you?" He asks, trying to sway the subject. Mark always thought he'd turn up to one of the reunions with a wife attached to his hip and bragging about children.
With the turn of events he actually realized he never really did want that, rather it was more a programmed response than anything - everyone around him getting married and having kids, its like a built in response that he never wanted. Hes thankful that even though hes hurting right now - the soulmate thing did open his eyes a little as to what he wants.
Jack gives a nervous laugh before answering Marks question. "No, I met them but never got to know my soulmate and suffer Hanahaki seeing as we're separated." Jack avoids his eyes and it makes Mark want to raise his chin so he can see the baby blues he hasn't forgotten but he shakes it off.
"I'm sorry. I heard hanahaki is horrible."
"Its okay, I'll get surgery soon." Jack tries to sound up beat about it but Mark knows it causes him sadness. He decides there and then that he wishes to stay in contact with Jack, the man gives him a sense of comfort and Mark likes his company. The move seems to be a nice way of lighting things, they both have had bad luck when it comes to the soulmate shit.
;
They meet for coffee and a wonder after that reunion and Mark can't deny the feeling in his stomach when hes getting ready. Its scary how comfortable and right he feels around Jack, after all this time. The pair even order the same kind of coffee a nice surprise when they do so. Marks been texting Jack through and its nice to have someone to talk about anything and everything too. They had a 2am chat when Mark was feeling lonely, thats when Jack had spoke about almost dying and worrying about his soulmate in case they couldn't see in colour anymore and the deal with Felix, the two months are almost up apprantly.
Although what Jack didn't mention then, was how his hanahaki had to begin to slow down. Hes not coughing up nearly as much petals as he used too in fact its only slowed since Mark showed up but that couldn't be surely not. Jack was never that lucky.
Their meet up was lovely, walking around town on a surprisingly nice day drinking the same kind of coffee.
Felix won't shut up about Mark - telling Jack it could be him because who else would it be and he stupidly slips up about the fact he hasn't had hanahaki as bad as before he met Mark. Who else could it be? Felix argues, that Jack hasn't met any one else lately.
Jack won't admit it to Felix but hes right. There hasn't been anyone majorly in his life that could stop the hanahaki other than Mark. Jack likes being around the man too, hes funny and warm. Jack doesn't know how hes going to tell him though, the woman who Mark thought was his soulmate wasn't and Jacks worried it won't be the same. Although the girl wasn't his earth-picked soulmate Jack can hear it that he was in love with her regardless.
And Jack doesn't know how he'll cope in a relationship, hes never been in one - and to be in one with his only, he knows it'll be tough and a risk.
;
Turns out drunk Jack doesn't get the memo and runs his mouth on a phone call to the very man who hasn't left his thoughts.
"What if we were," Jack pauses for a moment to find the word, giggling in between whilst Mark asks what hes even talking about at this point.
"Soulmates. How crazy would that be?" Jack hiccups in between and suddenly the line goes silent as if Mark is realizing and processing the information.
He is, hes considering it. The way he feels when hes around Jack and how different it is compared to Amy. He felt good with Amy of course he did, but with Jack something just feels right which never did with her.
Mark laughs nervously after about an eternity and Jacks already rambling about something else.
;
After the drunken phone call which eventually ended up in Jack snoring loudly through the phone and a whispered goodnight. Mark stared at his phone for awhile - considering his options. He'd arrange to speak to Jack tomorrow about it. Hes messages Amy at this time, they have spoken a few times since the break up but nothing proper.
He tells her he thinks he knows his soulmate but doesn't know what to do. She tells him to go for it, shes always been the bolder one of the two. He decides maybe shes right.
;
Mark finds himself outside Jacks door with flowers hes not sure the man will even like, nervous. The man answers, blue eyes sparkling but looking a little tired. Mark hands him the flowers and he smiles softly as he invites him inside.
Mark cuts right to the chase, hes lost too much sleep overthinking already.
"Do you think we're soulmates?" There's a long pause - the air is sharp in the time it takes Jack to answer.
He nods.
"If you dont think so I understand, I mean we've just met-"
"I think you're right." Mark cuts in before Jack even has a chance to talk himself out of it. He opens his eyes, baby blues exposed to view all of his emotions.
"Really?"
;
Felix is the first to know - know they're together and hes sure to tell Jack he told him so. Jacks happy he found Mark and his hanahaki is steadily disappearing.
But, when he meets Marks first love it stings. Of course it does, shes pretty blonde bombshell with a smile always upon her features and shes everything Jack isn't.
His jealousy gets in the way that night and he cant hold back comments or too.
Mark asks him do something minimal and Jacks fed up.
"Get Amy to do it." He utters and Mark has stunned silence before he snaps back.
"Seriously? Shes not my real soul mate."
"You thought she was."
"I chose you, Jack." Mark is closer now, holding his head as he tilts it to the side and closes his eyes. Marks right. He did, chose him but it still stings.
"And id do it again. I loved her, but not like the love you and I share, our love is chosen; I am your soulmate. You are mine." Soft reassurance but it is enough.
Jack kisses him, and although he never expected to have a soulmate hes happy its Mark.
Hes happy he gets to see his sweet hazel eyes in the sunlight and his raven hair get blown in the wind.
Hes happy he survived the accident and pleased that somehow the world brought them together. Felix always has the same shit-eating grin every time he sees them.
Amy will find her soulmate too; Jack believes in that much.
Fate is a funny, wonderful thing. Jack argues its more luck, but whatever it is - hes thankful.
