(119) Love is never taught.

Early upload seeing as its my birthday tomorrow! There was a lot of demand for a part two of a one shot I wrote long ago titled M.A.R.K - And I didn't think I could continue from it so I wrote something about Google instead! Very excited for this one. Still working hard on requests but please bare with me! Here's some fluff to make up for my last one shot which by the way - I was absolutely blown away by the response of it - as always, thank you so much for everything you do for me as a person and as a community.

'I have learned many feelings from you but what is it that I feel for you?'

Love.

Jack was an inventor; A modern man ahead of his time with a brain fit for this generation of technology and beyond that, a brain that saw outside box after box. Jack had brought great, helpful and particle things into the world and came up triumphant; earning awards that set pretty on his self in the living area. He always worked at home, inside his garage where it all began thirteen years ago; Jack would like to think that he'd very much matured but really perhaps the only that had matured was the grey in his hair and sometimes the strain in his knees when he stood too long or an ache in his back due to his ridiculous posture when working on a tricky bolt or wires, basically doing yoga in the progress as he found angle that helped him see better.

He was oiling a part of his latest piece when the doorbell rang through the entire place and echoed in the garage, Jack had done that specially for days like this when he was working away because he had missed so many important visiters in the past and didn't want to continue that trend.

He opened the door, wiping his hands on the already dirty cloth which quite frankly he needed to replace. Nonetheless, he was surprised to see a fellow inventor upon his doorstep.

"Matthias! Come for ideas?" Jack teased; although he never saw other inventors or creatures as competition due to how different they all were, he liked to tease every now and then.

"Don't think id find any here, but no. I would like a favour. May I come in?" Jack nodded, rolling his eyes at the comeback he got as he walked into his livingroom, taking a seat.

It wasn't the first time Matthias had been at his door and perhaps, would not be the last. Jack had helped him with many of his inventions or even just helping him find inspiration. Matthias was one of those people whom never knocked at your door for a cup of tea (not that Jack minded.) no, he'd rush to your door with an idea, an epiphany and need help to execute it, that's where Jack had come into play. Although, Jack didn't expect any inventor to show up at his door and sit down for a cuppa (unless they were asking him a flurry of questions, which given, he didn't mind either.)

"What can I do for ye?" Even after all his years in living in England, his twang didn't disappear.

"Well, I want to build a real life search engine." Now, being in this business, Jack was surprised by very little things especially after working in this industry for so long but that perked his interest greatly in the form of an eyebrow raise that said, 'continue.' So Matthias did.

"It'll be a challenge sure, especially trying to pitch it to google themselves but I want something to pitch first." Matthias gave him that look, the look that said 'hey Jack, build me a robot.'

"You really think this could work?" Jack asked, curiosity getting the better of him, maybe that's why he had got into inventing things in the first place, curious and a mind that couldn't shut off at nights due to the amount of ideas, seemingly impossible ones at that - which, he made into reality. So many people had told him his ideas were not particle; would never work or people would never believe in them and he had proved them wrong.

And whenever somebody came to him with an idea, he'd tell them that nothing was impossible. This, building a real life search engine - was no expection to that either.

"I think we can make this work, but I will need your expertise." Matthias spoke, passionate.

Jack couldn't say no if he wanted too and he absolutely didn't.

"I'll help you but on one condition, I get to keep the first bot ever made."

"Deal." Matthias grinned, wide and with a twinkle held inside his eyes.

Jack put all other projects on hold as they began work. It wasn't just as simple as getting parts or doing some coding work like it would be for a standard machine or robot, no. It was hours of planning, detailing, working out how they could get it to be human like. At early hours, with the sun just rising above the trees outside a tired Matthias mumbled something.

"What if we just get a willing actual human to be our subject to begin with and perhaps somehow, turn them into the engine?"

Jack shook his head, there was no way he was going to be responsible for making a robot apolocapse.

So, they continued on brain storming and searching for materials.

;

It was... grueling. There were days in which he'd snap at Matthias or vise versa, dry days were nothing struck Jacks mind or stormy days in which everything struck Jacks mind and with very few days in between. However, slow but sure progress was being made. Jack would work on the structure of the engine whilst Matthew, worked on the coding of it all and Jack was grateful he didn't have to do any of that yet, he was always the particle hands on sort of guy. (Jack also never did like calling people by their names; he preferred to appoint them a nickname it felt far more personal to him and Matthias was his - Jacksepticeye he was given due to that one accident he knows he'll never live down although in his 'maturing' years he has come to embrace it.)

;

Wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead the Irishman stood back a bit, looking at the machine he had been slavering over for the past god knows how long. Matt was outside, getting frrustrated with some google CEO. Jack was admiring the bot, it had arms and legs now too (not working but still, they were there and that was one tedious thing out of the way.) It was a hollow shell right now, with no facial features or even flesh, due to the fact they couldn't find any flesh like (and legal) materials for the robot but, progress was being made everyday now and visible progress.

In the beginning it had been scribbled notes and messy drawings, arguing over different things and now they had a shell, a canvas to paint.

A somewhat defeated looking Matthias came in, letting out a sigh.

"Still no further forward?"

"They don't think we will pull it off - too much money apparently."

"They'll be proved wrong when we show them this. Then they'll give us the money we need for the tech." Jack was grafter, had to be in this business but - he did admit that yes, they needed better more accurate technology for the search engine for the best results and google being a goddamn search engine, it seemed like a good idea but google were also stubborn bastards when it came to money, apparently.

Money wasn't exactly a problem but they wanted the best materials for the exterior of the machine which of course, didn't come easy and was pricey; so a helping hand from google would be nice.

They'd have to make one hell of a pitch - Jack always liked a challenge though.

;

Two fancy and (rented) suits later and they were walking into a large room with an even larger table with fancy wolks around them and collars so high that it made them look even more snotty. Jack never did like working with the 'higher ups' they always looked down on people like him - but today, they were about to be blown away.

It had been six and a half months of blood, sweat, tears, more than some dutch courage and many agruments but the prototype real life search engine was done and it worked, yes it couldn't answer all the questions in the world yet (Jack imagined that'd take more than a few months to achieve) However, it had human qualities - it looked human and it could answer a few tricky questions.

Also, Jack and Matthias finally, finally got the coding right to get the thing to move. Although it still needed work on things like the voice or accent, it was still something to be proud of and the two inventors undoubtedly were. Jack enjoyed blowing these CEOs and people whom thought they were better than him and Matthias put together, minds. Him and Matt answered questions effortlessly, although they were nervous - this was the biggest thing Jack had ever worked on, same with Matthias even though Matt had pulled off some crazy inventions in his career. But this, this was life changing, the robot itself screamed new era technology.

;

After they came out of the meeting and got their robot to order them a Mcdonalds, they head home to ponder if the people at google would accept their proposal. The robot itself had hazel eyes and raven hair, which wasn't easy to get considering they didn't want any freaky animal parts or hair, an entirely vegan robot.

The days dragged in waiting for the phone to ring; waiting to hear if google would give them funding to make more of these robots and to help get this one fully finished.

Matthias nearly tripped over the damn sofa when it finally did ring, breaking a comfortable silence as the atmosphere fell into something you could cut with a knife.

Jack couldn't hear the mumbling of whatever secretary was saying but he could hear Matts soft 'mhms' and 'okay, yes' that back and fourth seemed to go on forever until Matthias hung up and the room fell into an uncomfortable silence but he couldn't hide his chesire grin.

"We got the funding!" That was the best news he'd heard and decided to crack out the wine; Jack had a really good feeling about this project.

;

The work was relentless to get the prototype done and finished - a first of many; hopefully. The coding was a nightmare, tedious and frustrating however when one of them got too annoyed with it, the other would take over for awhile, it worked and they got it finished rather quick (well, if seven and a half hours was quick.) Fitting the little chip which held pretty much every interior thing they had worked on and it was no easy task, Jack could see Matt's hands shaking as he fitted it, tongue lolling out as he finished it, taking a step back and breathing as there robot opened its eyes as if it had just woken up.

"Ok, Google (they haven't got an official name for him yet.) What time is it?" Matthias asked, his eyes lighting up as he waited for his response.

"It is 1:33AM, It's pretty late - shouldnt you creators be in bed?"

Was it that time already? Matthias agreed with the robot, patting Jack on the shoulder and mumbling a 'good work today' as well as a 'thank you.'

Jack just nodded, yawning.

"Goodnight, Google."

;

When Jack rose in the morning it was to unusual sounds of somebody russling perhaps in his kitchen and at first, he panicked but then he remembered he had a human-robot and eased slightly but nonetheless, he got up from his bed - glancing at the red digits on his clock, did that really say 3pm?! He hadn't half over slept. As expected, Google was in the kitchen washing his dishes, the kitchen itself the cleanest Jack had ever seen it. It wasn't that Jack was messy or anything but he spent most of his time working in a garage and then realizing it was far to late to cook and would usually order takeaways. "Afternoon, Google. Sorry I slept so late but thank ye for cleaning my mess up." Jack smiled, rubbing the back of his neck as if he were shy - there was nothing to be shy about, he'd helped build google for gods sake.

Speaking of which, he really wanted to give Google a proper name - it only felt right.

After making some coffee and getting the news he'd missed this morning from the robot, he brought the topic up.

"Google, I was thinking that it'd only be right to give yah a proper name."

The robot nodded and titled his head to the side.

"What do you wish to name me, creator?"

"What if you name yourself? I was never good at naming inventions." Jack didn't really like using that term for the robot, it was his and Matt's greatest creation - more than just screws and bolts. (Jack never liked using that word for the bot either.) The robot seemed to contemplate the concept and then gave a firm nod and a smile.

"How about Mark?"

"Mark." Jack repeated, testing the name out - it rolled off his tongue, accented; He liked it.

"Alright, Mark - I like it." The robot hummed, agreeing.

;

Daily meetups began with Matthias as they began working on making more of google which was a lot easier due to Mark helping out too. Google had actually agreed that if Matt and Jack could make more perhaps in different body shapes or a different gender that they'd buy them from the inventors and sell them on, giving them a large cut of the profit. (Google were pretty convinced that they'd make a generous amount of money) So, they began working right away.

At first Mark just watched the inventors and would provide food or beverages for when they needed it but the robot was a fast learner and soon helped out properly. Jack enjoyed working with the robot as much as he did Matthias.

;

Robot production took up a lot of Jacks time but they'd made about three in the past months and although he was hesistant, Matthias and Mark agreed that yes they should take a break even if just for a week or so. But Jack never did like breaks, his hands would twitch from not working with tools or having oil or some fluid from his current project on them and it was frustrating and perhaps Mark had picked up on it. The bot sat with him at lunch and decided to give something for Jack to focus on while he wasn't working himself to the bone.

"Jack (finally, Mark had started calling him by his name rather than just 'creator' although, he still called Matthias that but Matt didn't seem to mind as much as Jack did) Could you maybe program me to feel?" That was something he hadn't expected from the robot at all and he didn't quite know what to say.

"I can't program you that," The robots expression seemed to change to sad briefly, then back to his normal blank one. "However, I can teach you."

Jack wasn't sure if feelings could be taught but he'd sure as hell try.

;

Tuesday, Emotion to teach Mark; Happiness.

Jack wanted to start with happiness because he didn't just want to teach him sadness or anger first.

"So, if happiness were to be a color, it'd be yellow or orange like the sun."

The robot nodded and looked like he was taking notes within his head.

"The things that make me happy are good coffee, pizza and making inventions."

"So, what do you think would make you happy?"

Mark thought about this for quite awhile, the silence in the room comfortable.

"Animals." Jack nodded, okay this was a good start.

;

After a long week which was literally, a rollercoaster of emotions - Jack decided to do a partical thing with Mark after giving him a vague understanding of different feelings. So far they had covered Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.

Today they'd practice Happiness and disgust. Jack took Mark for a walk in the park, where there were many dogs running about and he looked similar to some of the puppies here with a smile on his face Jack think it couldn't get any wider until he got to pet a dog and it grew.

Then, Disgust as they walked past a dump - Mark scrunching his nose up at the smell and he nodded.

"This is disgusting." The robot mumbled and Yup, he was learning.

The next few days they particed fear, anger and sadness. Fear - Jack had discovered that Mark was scared of the ocean after a visit on the beach. Anger - Jack made up a senerio in which he had gotten hurt by somebody and Mark had raised his voice at for him to stop. Sadness - They had watched Marley and Me at night and after Jack acting like he didn't cry the robot was a babbling mess beside him.

Jack knew that anyone else that owned a google, they wouldn't have bothered to teach them anything just seeing them as some appliance but Mark was far, far more than that. Jack was proud of him anyone could see that - Even Matthias had brought it up.

Mark filled a gap Jack didn't know existed, he'd always been alone in this business - he wasn't talking about the people he works with, his friends no, romantically. He got lonely at nights but he hadn't felt lonely since Mark was here.

;

An all too familiar scene, as Matthias knocked on his door - Jack wiped off his hands on the dirty cloth which he'd happily replaced since all those years ago when Matt had first knocked on his door.

"Still coming to still my ideas?" Jack grinned.

"Ideas? Didn't think you'd still have those in your old age." Came Matthias' comeback. Jack let him in, rolling his eyes.

"Just wanted to pop by and hand you this," Matthias handed him a plaque which upon further inception showed his name.

"Sean 'Jack, Jackspeticeye' McLoughlin - Winner of most revolutionary invention." Jack took it with grace and pride, smiling and warm.

"I have one too, how amazing is it?!"

Jack agreed, and with another thank you and Jack saying the same Matthias left and Jack put the prize on a self, staring at it for a few moments.

;

Mark had been acting odd lately and he wasnt in need of any updates and frankly, Jack was concerned. He was being awfully quite and Jack gave up at around lunch time and decided to ask him what was the matter and when he did, Mark looked like he was being ripped from an alternate reality and was only coming back into focus when Jack startled him.

"Mark?" Jack patted the robot on the shoulder and it seemed to calm him down a bit.

"Whats wrong?" If the robot did have a problem maybe with the technology Jack really wanted to help him; worried for the robot in case of a malfunction.

"I am having some feelings that I do not understand." Marks expression changed, softer than it was a few moments ago. Jack had been worried about this when he began to teach him feelings, worried that he'd get wrapped up in them and have no clue how to deal with them.

"I feel things towards you." Jack titled his head at that, perhaps Mark felt pride or gratefulness; Jack had helped bring him into the world, Jack had treated him like he was human. Sensing Jacks confusion it seemed, Mark spoke up again.

"It is not an emotion you have taught me." The inventors head was spinning, he felt dizzy. "What is the emotion I feel for you, Jack?"

"Something that cannot be taught." And Jack knew it.

"Love." Just four letters, four letters that held so much - four letters the difference between heart felt and heartbreak, a word so powerful, a word many were afraid to say.

A word Jack was afraid of.

A graze from Jacks finger tips against Marks knuckles as the room fell silent.

"Do you... Do you love me Mark?" It was shaky, when he said it - accented more than usual a thing which happened when he was nervous.

"Yes."

Love cannot be taught nor learnt, Jack knew it was genuine and call him crazy for loving a robot but he was so much more and Jack truly did believe the robot felt; it was raw on his face when he did, it was a glaze in his eyes when he did.

Truth was, Jack loved Mark too.
