26.
She was worth fighting for. So he would fight, with his whole being, with his all, with his everything. No matter the cost, he would get her back.
I watched in absolute horror as Leader started dialling the Castle of Sensus. Yes, I was afraid for myself, but with physical pain I would be able to deal.
Or, so I hoped.
I couldn't deal with the fact that my soulmate would be in agony. Never would I have wished for him to be in agony. Not even when we'd fought I wanted him to hurt. No, I wanted him to love me, I wanted him to not be stupid and mean, but I never wished for him to be in pain. And I knew that once the phone call was made, he would be in mental distress.
I could hear the phone ring once, twice, thrice, and I closed my eyes. I waited to hear a voice on the other side of the line, but it never came. Instead, I heard Leader curse out loud, and as I opened my eyes, I was just in time to see him walking to the door hastily. "We will continue this, my dear Micara, we will continue this. Later." I shivered at the idea, but was glad it was postponed nonetheless.
It took me awhile before I realised what had happened. Leader had forgotten to cuff me again before he had left the room. He'd also, quite conveniently for me, forgotten his keys. The same keys he had previously put on the desk in an ordered manner, alongside his wallet.
I stood up quickly but quietly, afraid that Leader would come back any second. At first I waited impatiently for him to show, but when the door stayed closed for a few minutes, I decided I would challenge my luck and sneak away with the keys and wallet. Gripping both tightly in one hand, I armed myself with a small girandole I found on one of the windowsills. I had checked if the window was an escape option, but the window looked out upon the courtyard, where once every few minutes, a guard would pass through.
So, no. I couldn't escape from the window, so the only option was the door.
As I put my hand on the door handle, I started hesitating all over again. Maybe it was a better idea if I just waited for Aericon to rescue me.
What if that was the reason that Leader had run away? What if my soulmate had come to save me and I wasn't there?
I should stay.
But what if it was only something simple, then Leader would be back in no time to torture me anyway.
I should definitely go.
Yes. I would go. Save myself like the strong woman I am. Right.
As silent as I could possibly be, I took an investigatory stroll through several hallways of the mansion I was kept in.
For once I was thankful I had decided to learn the hallways of the Castle of Sensus apart. It had taught me several tricks to be able to map my way around a large building such as this one.
Following the walls with your right hand would eventually lead you to the entrance of a maze, but that wouldn't work here. First of all because I was on the second floor, so I would have to go down the stairs first before being able to escape through a door.
Looking at the keys in my hand I found that there were several housekeys, and something that looked as if it was a car key. Sighing softly to myself, I knew I had to look for a garage, or somewhere else where I would be able to find a car. Usually that was below ground, so I assumed that if I found a staircase that went below the ground floor, I would manage to escape.
My bare feet padded softly on the carpet floors, making little to no sound. Even though my heart was beating unhealthily fast, I was sort of successful in keeping my breathing under control.
As I never encountered people, my investigation around the mansion went pretty smoothly. Well, smoothly until that moment when I started getting sloppy. I hadn't found anything of importance yet and the hand that was holding the girandole began becoming tired.
Once I didn't look around the corridor before moving my entire body there. That was when it went wrong. Two guards with a humongous gun in their hands looked me straight in the eye when I simply walked down the hallway, not even being sneaky. Maybe I could've played it off if I didn't hold a girandole in my arm, or when I wasn't bare footed. Maybe, just maybe then I could have pretended that I belonged there and that I had every right to be there.
But no, my looks screamed 'I don't belong here, I'm a prisoner which is trying to escape, catch me if you can,' so basically, I was screwed.
Not even bothering taking the candle holder as my only weapon, I started running around frantically in complete panic. This panic caused me to not look around and keep track of where I was going, so after a few minutes, I was lost so badly, I was already thinking of using the right-hand method anyway.
Which was a completely stupid idea of course, because I could still hear the sound of very big feet stomping on the floor, very close behind me. At least they hadn't thought about cutting me off.
No matter how hard I ran, I couldn't outrun them forever. My breathing was ragged, my chest hurt, and I was clutching Leader's wallet and keys so tightly, my fists were completely white, unable to receive any blood in the smallest capillaries.
I had to hide somewhere, and fast at that.
So I sprinted even harder, feeling my heart bounce around in my throat. I gained a few extra metres on my followers, which allowed me to go around a corner or two without them knowing exactly where I went.
There I opened a door, went inside, and closed it directly behind me, locking it immediately. Trying to regain my breathing, I heard how the two men stomped past the space where I was hiding. They obviously weren't the smartest wolves on earth, because they didn't hang around the place where I was hiding. They just walked away, so when I couldn't hear them anymore, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
Only when I had calmed down for a bit, I looked at my surroundings. I could almost cry with joy. I was sitting on top of a pair of stairs, with a small sign saying 'garage' that pointed downstairs. I didn't even take the time to laugh at the convenience, before darting down the stair as quickly as I still could with my aching limbs.
This time I was more careful, not looking forward to meeting more stupid, or even worse, smart guards. It turned out I didn't have to as there was no one there, but I was rather safe than sorry. Hoping the door wouldn't creak as I opened it, I held my breath as I pushed down the handle. The room behind that door had me smiling broadly with glee, even more when I pushed the button that would hopefully unlock Leader's car.
The car lights of a black SUV lit up, as did my face like a child on Christmas morning.
"Bingo, baby," I muttered to myself, smirking. "Sorry, dear Leader, I can't stay any longer in this hell hole, I have a ride to catch."
