Chapter 2: First Encounter
With the help of Undyne, I made it to Snowdin safe and sound, also relatively fast.
"Papyrus should be here sometime soon to take you to the Inn. I'll get going now. I got Royal Captain duties to complete!" She flashed a toothy smile and was off back into the humid territory of Waterfall.
I waited patiently, shifting my weight around and taking in the surrounding area. The snow beneath my feet was soft. The trees glittered from being covered in snow, reflecting the fake sunlight.
I waited and waited for Papyrus to show up, but... no one came. I debated if I should head forward by myself. To my knowledge, Snowdin wasn't too short of a walk from the entrance of Waterfall. Just passing through a small and foggy forest.
The longer I waited, the more anxious I grew just standing there. Although I was allowed to wander the Underground a bit, I was supposed to be carefully guarded or in a place of no concern. Walking through a forest I had been in once was dangerous.
"Surely it's straight ahead. It'll be fine." I mumbled to myself.
Based on where I was and how my body temperature slowly decreased, I decided to risk the chances of getting in trouble with Ashore. I stepped forward into the unknown, a bit of pride swelling in my chest from the small rebellion.
My bags were a little heavy, so I was moving at a slower pace than I would have liked to, but it was what it was. I needed to get to Snowdin before it got dark, which was coming up. There wasn't much to note about my surroundings. Cold, wet, white, lots of trees that seemed to go on forever. Just how big could a forest be underground? To be fair, it was a magical one, or at least that's what I assumed. How else could a forest be underground? How else could any of this be underground?
I refocused on the mission at hand, finding Snowdin, which began to become more of a challenge than I had thought. It had to be forward. That's what the maps show, the ones i've seen, but everything in the forest looked so similar. I've probably strayed off the path.
"Great," I grunted.
Should I yell? No, that could attract unnecessary attention, but what other option do I have? Freeze to death out here? I could... no. King Asgore strictly forbade me from using it around other monsters unless in a dire situation.
I stopped and looked around. No monsters. No witness. An emergency of freezing to death at hand. This seemed like the right time to use it.
Taking a deep breath, I summoned forth the power from inside my soul and directed it towards my hand to light a small sparkling star that emitted heat. I had to be careful how much I used, or I would exhaust myself. The star twinkled and danced in my palm.
I continued my journey as night swept over. Yep, I was definitely lost and freezing. It was dark by now, and I wasn't sure what to do. This was the moment I really wished I had a cellular device.
I had two options: stay here and potentially freeze to death or get attacked by a feral monster, or I could continue on and still face that fate, but have a more likely chance of getting help.
Already exhausted, I decided to build myself a campfire. It was a poorly built one, but it would work. I sat and watched the flames dance. My eyes grew heavy as the night went on. I struggled to keep them open; I couldn't fall asleep and risk the chances of a bad monster finding me. Not very many knew about me.
SNAP!
I swiftly turned around, preparing to face whatever may come my way, but nothing was there. I narrowed my eyes, letting them adjust to the darkness, and began scanning the surrounding area. A low growl became apparent from my left. I jumped and turned in the new direction. A white dog wearing cracked armor appeared from the bushes.
A monster. A whole new monster I had never seen before. I wanted to be happy and excited, truly, but the beast before me didn't allow it. It lunged forward without another second of hesitation, aiming for ny higher limbs. I dodged, narrowly missing it. My turn now.
Equipping a stick, I readied myself to FIGHT it but couldn't bring myself to do so. Time for plan B, SPAREing. I studied the creature in the little time I had between fights with the dog.
One miscalculation and the dog was able to land a firm bite on the arm. I cried out in pain, maybe even for help, but no one came. It felt as if a piece of my soul cracked. This wasn't good; now I was going to bleed out to death!
While I was distracted, the dog took another chance to bite at my hip this time, "ACK!"
I stumbled and fell to the ground, throwing anything within range of me towards the beast. It growled, licking its lips as it stalked towards me. This was it. Or was it? Maybe I should try using magic, but like that went exceedingly well last time! Whatever! It was better to try than to die brutally at the hands of a savage dog.
I attempted to focus on the magic flowing through my veins, but the bleeding and throbbing pains made it impossible. I struggled up to my feet, holding the side of my body where it was gushing blood. My head spun around, and everything was blurry. This was impossible, and I was pathetic to fail this badly at my first encounter in a long time.
"I'm not going down without a little bit of a FIGHT! Sorry Toriel... Mum."
The wolf lunged again, and I prepared myself for impact, but the monster was surrounded by a blue haze, lifted up, and flung back. I fell onto the ground and let myself bleed out, not really caring anymore. I heard the faint buzz of a voice... or maybe voices? I couldn't tell all that much.
The last thing I remembered before closing my eyes was a hooded figure picking me up and black eyes with sharp white pupils focusing on me.
