Chapter 69 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
A/N I have been having the shittiest of weeks this week and honestly there is nothing better than taking a break after three consecutive hours of homework for the chance to just sit alone in my dorm room and listen to Misha Collins be the cutest lil dad on the planet so may I present to you (as seen above): Misha's full panel from today uploaded by yours truly
Dean wakes up to a pounding headache, and, just like he has every December 26 for years, he regrets drinking as much as he did last night. Fortunately, he wasn't blackout drunk; he was just too drunk to think things through.
He still remembers all of last night. He remembers taking way too many shots during Never Have I Ever. He remembers Charlie gaining his respect during Truth or Dare. He remembers Spin the Bottle...
He remembers kissing Cas during Spin the Bottle...
That was stupid. Even for drunk Dean, that was stupid. Cas wasn't even playing the game. He wouldn't have dragged anyone else into it. Why did he think it was okay to drag Cas in? And Jo was right there, too. He made out with Jo's crush right in front of her. He feels bad enough going behind her back with him, but that was too far.
... It was a really good kiss, though.
Dean forces himself to sit up and face the day, if only because he wants some Advil. Jo groans and covers her head with her pillow, and Dean is torn between laughing or feeling sorry for her. He thought he had it bad, but he's had years to build up an alcohol tolerance. Jo's 23 and, like, 110 pounds. Drinking has to hit her harder.
"'Morning, sunshine," Dean says in a jokingly condescending way, as if he's not also suffering from a splitting headache. "Want me to bring you some Advil?"
Jo just groans again, which is a good enough answer for him. He heads out to the kitchen, and the blinding light doesn't help his head in the slightest. His dad and Ellen are already up and sharing a coffee at the kitchen table. Dean ignores them and heads straight for the cabinet.
"Rough night?" Ellen asks teasingly.
"I want to die," Dean deadpans. He grabs the bottle of Advil and a couple of cups. As he's filling them with water, he asks, "Is anyone else up?"
"Just you," John says. "Enjoy the quiet while it lasts."
"Trust me, I will," Dean mutters.
He pops a few Advil tablets in his mouth and takes the rest back to Jo's room with a cup of water. He closes the door behind them, trying to block out as much unnecessary light as possible.
"I brought you some drugs," Dean tells her.
Jo pushes the pillow off her face but she doesn't open her eyes. "Will they kill me? Because if not, I don't want them."
Dean chuckles. "No, but they'll hopefully make you want to die just a little bit less."
Jo groans. "Fine." She sits up and rubs her eyes. "Last night was a bad idea."
"It always is," Dean says. "So, we're still on for some drinking games next Christmas, right?"
Jo just snatches the bottle from him without a word, and Dean would absolutely be laughing at her if it wouldn't hurt so much.
She takes her pills, then downs the rest of the water in one swig. She puts the cup down on her bedside table before burying her head in her hands. "How much of last night do you remember?"
"I think I remember all of it," Dean says, though if he's forgotten anything, he doesn't remember forgetting it. "You?"
"Bits and pieces," she replies. "Like I remember that Cas didn't play any of the games with us. That sucked."
Dean chuckles awkwardly. "Guess he's probably doing better than both of us, then." Thank god she's still covering her face because he's sure his expression would have given him away. Does this mean she doesn't remember Cas's one Spin the Bottle moment? That would alleviate so much guilt. It doesn't change the fact that he's (hopefully?) going to sleep with her crush, but at least she doesn't know there's anything going on.
"I know," Jo says, "but I was so hoping to get to kiss him. Did you know that we've never kissed when there were no cameras on us?"
Dean has absolutely no idea how to respond to that. He doesn't want to say something that will crush her dreams, but he also knows that there is absolutely no way Cas is going to treat her the way Dean did when they fake-dated — namely, he knows they're not going to sleep together like Dean and Jo did. He just can't say that without explaining that he only knows that because he knows Cas is gay.
Fortunately, Jo keeps talking without a response. "I wanted a real kiss from him, one that's not just meant to look pretty, you know? But obviously that didn't happen."
Dean pats her back comfortingly because he has no idea how else to respond.
Jo finally picks her head up to look at him. "Did anything else happen last night? Anything I should know?"
"I don't know," Dean says. What does he have to tell her and what should he keep to himself? He's obviously not going to tell her about the kiss. What else...? "Oh, you convinced Cas and Charlie to stay for another couple days."
"I did?"
Dean nods. "He didn't want to take advantage of drunk you, though, so he said he's not going to mention it unless you bring it up first."
"Really?" She smiles at that. "He's such a gentleman. Not wanting to 'take advantage of' me just by staying a couple days." She shakes her head fondly. "He's just so nice, you know?"
"He definitely is," Dean agrees.
Jo pauses. "Wait, how did I convince him to stay? And how drunk was I that he thought he needed a second invitation?"
Dean frowns. He was hoping she wouldn't ask that. He's not sure how to explain last night in a way that won't make her overthink everything. She's been trying so hard to get Cas to like her. She would absolutely regret last night, even if Cas didn't seem to mind any more than he minds her subtle sober attempts to flirt.
Jo sighs. "That bad, huh?"
"What? No, not at all," Dean says. He goes for the answer he thinks will bother her the least while still staying somewhat truthful. "You were, like, 'flirting,' but it probably looked like a joke. I think he was half-watching our games so it's far from the weirdest thing he heard last night. He's not gonna look very that far into it."
Jo groans. "What did I say?"
"You just made some jokes about being his girlfriend," Dean says. "I doubt he even thought it was flirting. It probably just sounded like dumb jokes about your PR relationship."
Jo lols her head back, exasperated. "Why am I like this?"
Dean shrugs. "Because you're fun."
"You mean because I'm dumb?" Jo asks.
Dean pats her back again. He's really not sure what to say. He genuinely doesn't think last night changed anything. Cas seemed genuinely interested in staying for a little while longer so it's not like Jo's bothering him too much, drunk or sober. Of course, he didn't seem too sure about staying until Dean jumped in with his subtle sex reference, but it still means that he doesn't mind.
Dean just wishes he could somehow explain to Jo how little of an effect last night is going to have on anything. He's not used to keeping secrets from her, but ever since Cas came out, he's had to keep a lot of them. He has a feeling everything would work out for the best if Cas would just be honest with her, but he's sure the guy has his reasons for wanting to stay in the closet. As long as Cas stays in the closet, he will, too. It would be hard to explain his bi awakening at 26 years old without mentioning the role Cas played in it.
"Although," Jo says, "he did get me a really pretty pair of earrings yesterday. They seemed real high-quality, too — and it was thoughtful; they reminded him of my dress. Do you know how few guys would even remember my dress, never mind how many would think of it when they were looking at earrings?"
Dean knew this was coming the moment Jo opened that gift. He knew she was going to look too much into it, just like he's sure Cas looked too much into it when he was trying to find something to give her. As strange as it is, he's glad it's coming after a brief existential crisis, though. If she's going to think it means more than it does, he's glad it's just to calm her down about how much she thinks she messed up last night.
"He definitely likes me," Jo says. "He wouldn't have gotten me those if he didn't. I just..." She sighs. "I wish I knew how much he likes me. I'm constantly torn between 'he likes me as a friend' and 'maybe he actually is into me,' and I just can't tell whether I should make a move or hold back and let us get closer first."
Dean shrugs. "Well, there's only one way to find out." If she would just give Cas the chance to let her down gently, they could all move on with their lives.
"But what if he turns me down?" Jo asks. "I don't want to blow it, you know? And I definitely don't want to make things weird between us. As much as I don't like being friendzoned — if I am friendzoned; I don't even know at this point — I don't want to lose the friendzone, too. I'd rather keep it to myself and be his friend than ruin everything and turn into just a coworker."
Dean nods sympathetically. He's glad he never really had the same predicament — when he asked Cas if he wanted a blowjob, it was really just because things couldn't get any more awkward even if he shot the idea down — but he can't imagine how frustrating this has to be.
Jo flops back against the bed and closes her eyes. "You know what? Fuck it. I'm too hungover to have this conversation right now."
Dean chuckles. "Alright, we can put a rain check on it."
