Chapter 65

After a delicious cinnamon roll breakfast, it's time for instagram pictures. The Harvelles go first, and Jess mans the camera. Why they're using a camera in the 21st century, Castiel does not know, but they are.

"Alright," Ellen says, "everybody line up in front of the tree!"

"Everybody," of course, excludes the Winchesters; no one is supposed to know that they're here, and this is purely for instagram purposes. Unfortunately, "everybody" does not exclude Castiel, so he has to join in.

Castiel stands on the end, with only Jo next to him. Ellen and Ash stand on her other side, and though Castiel can't see it, he assumes it looks fine. It's about as symmetrical as it can get: Castiel and Ash are the tall ones, so they're on the outside. Jo and Ellen are the shorter ones, so they're on the inside. He's next to his supposed girlfriend, which gives the cute factor to those not privy to the industry secrets of fake relationships. It's perfect, right?

Wrong.

"No, Ash, on the other side," Jo says. "Stand next to Cas. Gotta make sure everyone knows he's part of the family now."

Castiel really likes the Harvelles (and the Winchesters, too, for that matter), but he doesn't feel like part of the family. As long as the general public believes he does, though, it doesn't really matter.

Ash does as he's told, switching sides and putting an arm around Castiel's shoulders. Castiel does the same to him, and wraps an arm around Jo's waist. She leans her head against him, so he tilts his head slightly towards her.

"Everybody smile!" Jess says. She takes a few pictures from a few different angles, then lowers the camera. "What next?"

"Just me and Cas," Jo says. "We need our happy couple photos."

Ash and Ellen move out of the way, so it's only Jo and Castiel left in front of the tree. In true pseudo-boyfriend fashion, he gently moves her in front of him and puts his arms around her. Had they had any less experience in front of a camera, it would look like an awkward prom photo. Fortunately, because they've both made a lot of money just by posing nicely for cameras, Castiel knows it's going to look cute.

"People are going to eat this up," Jess tells them as she snaps a few more pictures.

Then it's the Winchesters' turn, with Jo manning the camera. They take their pictures in front of a plain wall with a Christmas wreath that was apparently bought just for this. Twitter fangirls are smarter than the FBI; if there was any possible way to prove that the Winchesters spent Christmas here, they would find it.

They all stand in a line as well: John, Dean, Sam, and Jess on the end. Castiel didn't realize it until now, but Jess is actually really tall. In her heels, she's even taller than Dean and John, though Sam still has a couple inches on her. They take a few normal pictures, and then Dean announces that they need to take some silly ones so he can make a slightly passive-aggressive caption. Castiel's not quite sure he wants to know what that means. The youngest three all make the weirdest faces, and John just laughs.

When this portion of the photo-taking is over, Jess says, "Sam and I brought some fake mistletoe to announce our engagement. Can we get one more picture with that?"

"Of course!" Jo says. "Go grab it. I'll be here."

Jess heads off to the room she and Sam are sharing, and everyone waits around for her to come back.

"Ooh, Cas!" Jo says. "We should get a mistletoe pic, too!"

Castiel has absolutely no desire to get a picture kissing under the mistletoe, but he doesn't want to flat-out say that. He usually wouldn't have a problem playing up a romance for the cameras, but it's different now that he knows Jo actually wants a relationship.

His hastily-thought-up excuse to decline is, "Is that really worth the risk that someone will recognize the mistletoe as the same stuff Sam and Jess used?

Jo shrugs. "Yeah, sure. We can turn it around, move it someplace else, post it a few hours apart. It'll be fine."

Castiel has to admit, he does think that will work. Mistletoe is pretty common on Christmas. He wishes he could honestly say he expects people to recognize it, but though there will probably be a few people calling whoever posts second a copycat, it won't prompt a conspiracy theory that they're all together.

Out of excuses, Castiel looks to Dean for help, but he just shrugs. Okay, that's not helpful. He glances at Charlie, but she doesn't say anything, either, not that he'd expected her to. She may hate that he has to pretend to be straight, but not enough to step in.

Jess comes back with her mistletoe, and between her, Sam, and Ash, they manage to get it up on the wall, replacing the wreath that now lies on the floor. Jess and Sam stand under it and pose with their lips together, though to call it a kiss when neither of them are moving would be a stretch. Jess cups Sam's cheek in her hand, showing her ring off for the camera, and Jo snaps a few pictures.

"You guys are adorable," Jo tells them.

"Thank you!" Jess says, beaming.

"Jo and Cas want a picture under the mistletoe, too," Sam says.

"I'm sure we can arrange that," Jess says. "Where do you want yours?"

They set the mistletoe up in the doorway, and Jess takes the camera back. Jo and Castiel stand under the mistletoe, and they wait for Jess to give them the cue before they kiss. It really does feel like a kiss at first, but after a second, it becomes a pose for the camera. Castiel once would have brushed that off as medthod acting to make it look real, but, once again, knowing she actually likes him makes it very uncomfortable.

"Perfect," Jess says, and Castiel steps away from Jo immediately.

"I bet that's going to look so cute," Jo says.

Castiel forces a smile. "Yep, people are going to love it." He's actually fairly certain that people are going to hate it — Dean's fanbase holds a grudge against him and they make it known — but he wanted to remind her that none of this is real. No matter how much she wants it to be something more, they're always going to be just friends.

"Alright," Ellen says, "one more. Everyone in front of the Christmas tree. Not everything's about showing off on instagram, you know"

They all head back to the living room, where Charlie takes another couple skittles out of the bag she's already eaten so many from. As Jess sets the camera up on the tripod, everyone gets set up. Castiel stands on the end, and, unsurprisingly, Jo stands next to him. Dean goes to her other side, but when he puts an arm around her waist, his hand brushes against Castiel's butt briefly — and then it comes back and stays there. Castiel's almost afraid someone will notice, but Charlie is eating skittles right behind the camera and seems oblivious. If she doesn't notice, no one will.

"You too, Charlie," Ellen says.

Charlie seems taken aback by that. "Really?"

"Yes, really," Ellen says. "Can't have a group picture without the whole group."

Charlie shoves another couple of skittles in her mouth before running over to join them. She stands on her Castiel's other side, so excited to be a part of this that she doesn't even notice that Dean's hand is still touching Castiel's ass despite her standing right there.

Ellen sets the timer, then joins them in front of the tree with just a few seconds to spare before the camera snaps a picture.

"Alright," Ellen says, "that's all we got."

"Which," Dean adds, "is her nice way of saying they if you blinked, it sucks to be you."

Ellen shakes her head, amused. "Well, I can't say you're wrong."

"Can I steal the camera?" he asks. "I wanna download the pictures."

Ellen shrugs. "Well, someone's gotta do it."

"Awesome." Dean heads over to the tripod, which is the unspoken clue for the crowd to disperse. He takes the camera from the tripod, then glances behind himself. "Hey, Cas, wanna come with? You can look at your pics; I can look at mine?"

Castiel has a feeling he knows exactly where Dean is going with this, and it has nothing to do with pictures at all.

"Sounds like a plan," Castiel says, his face betraying no hints that this is anything more than a chance to look at pictures.

But then Jo jumps in with an eager, "Oh, I'll come, too!" and their opportunity is gone.

Dean smiles anyway. "Alright, cool. Let's go look at pictures."

Castiel forces a smile, too. If he'd known Jo was going to want to come, he wouldn't have agreed to it. He doesn't actually want to look at the pictures, but it's not like he can get out of it now.

The three of them head to Jo's room, and then kicks the door shut behind them. There's only one laptop on Jo's desk, and it doesn't look like the one Castiel saw Dean with the day before.

"You wanna do it?" Dean asks Jo. "Your computer's already out."

"Sure," Jo says, taking the camera. "Should have a USB cable right..." She looks around her desk for a few moments, and eventually finds one in one of the drawers. "Here." She plugs it into her laptop and the plugs the camera in on the other side. She leans over her desk to type in her laptop password, and Castiel looks away courteously despite knowing that Jo can't tell.

"You wanna sit?" Dean asks her. "Your back's gonna kill you if you keep doing that."

"No one else wants to sit?" Jo asks, glancing over at Castiel.

Castiel shrugs. "You're the one on the computer. Go for it."

Dean steps out of the way to let Jo in, and with her out of the way, he can stand a lot closer to Castiel than he did before. Castiel assumes that's his whole plan, but then he feels a hand squeeze his ass and he realizes that Dean really did have ulterior motives.

Castiel looks over at him, amused, to see a smirk on the other man's face. He is so glad that Dean enjoys this, because Castiel's been wanting this for ages. He just wishes Jo hadn't decided to tag along so they could go a little (*cough* a lot *cough*) further.

"And they're uploading," Jo says, and Dean pulls his hand away just a moment before she glances back at them. "It shouldn't take too long. It usually goes pretty quick."

Castiel raises an eyebrow. "Do you use this camera a lot? I would've thought most people had graduated to cell phones."

"If they're pre-planned pictures to post online, we usually use the camera," Jo tells him. "Spur-of-the-moment things are usually on cellphones, but this bad boy takes really good pictures." She pats the camera affectionately.

"Oh, that's smart," Castiel says. He doesn't care enough about instagram to invest in his own high-tech camera, but for celebrities like her and Dean with a big social media presence, it definitely makes sense.

"It's amazing what 15-plus years in the spotlight teaches you," Jo says with a shrug.

The pictures finish uploading, and Jo opens the first one. Unfortunately, that means that not only is he now stuck here looking at pictures that he really couldn't care less about, but he has to actually engage with said pictures that he really has no opinion about. And, the worst part is, the fact that they have to pay attention means that Dean and Castiel can't even try to have a little fun behind her back.

This is going to be a long day.
