Chapter 37

It's Halloween, and, usually, that means one thing -- a party with the Novaks and Harvelles. Unfortunately, he can't swing that the way he would have before the breakup. He can't take Jo down to South Dakota to hang out with his family, and she can't bring her family along with her. It looks like that type of celebration has officially reached its end.

That doesn't stop Dean from spending the evening with his family, though. They don't go to Sioux Falls, though. Sam still has school in the morning, and Jess has the midday shift at the hospital, which leaves very little time for them to travel the country.

Instead, Sam and Jess invite Dean and his father to Palo Alto to hang out after Jess comes back from work. She had apparently found out that a local bar is having a Halloween party, and while John may think he's too old for that and turned the offer down, Dean obviously can't say no. He gets to hang out with his brother and he gets some beer. What could be better?

Dean shows up at Sam and Jess's apartment in his Halloween costume -- a very impressive cosplay of Red Hood, via his friend Stef, who specializes in costume-making for various shows. She's usually his go-to every October, and she never disappoints.

It's Jess that opens the door, and she seems to find this costume hilarious. "God, you really are the fun Winchester, huh?"

Dean shrugs. "That's what I've been saying for years, and yet you chose Sam instead."

Jess steps out of the way. "Well, come on in, Jason. Your brother's just being a stubborn pain in the ass, but I'm sure you can talk some sense into him."

Dean steps inside and looks around. The place hasn't changed much in the few years that Sam and Jess have lived here. He doesn't visit very often, but he likes to check the place out on the rare occasion he gets the chance. It gives him a nice insight into what Sam's life is like where no one but his girlfriend is around. As always, the place is pretty nicely organized, proving once again that Sam and Jess are too neat for their own good.

Dean eyes Jess's Mario costume. It's honestly better than his Red Hood -- sure, he has a state-of-the-art Red Hood mask, but Jess has a giant felt mustache. It doesn't get much better than that.

"Now, I have to ask," Dean says. "Is this a matching costume?"

"Of course," she says with a grin.

"Oh, goodie!" Dean claps his hands excitedly. "I hope Sam's dressing like Princess Peach!"

"I heard that!" Sam yells from somewhere that Dean can't quite place, though he'd assume it's either the bathroom or the bedroom.

Jess just shakes her head, amused. "Sam, if you want to tell him off, you're gonna have to come out in person to do it!"

Sam groans. "But I look like an idiot."

"Don't worry 'bout that," Dean says. "I promise, I will act like enough of an idiot tonight that no one's even gonna notice your pretty little Princess Peach costume."

"Fuck off!"

"Ah, you love me!" Dean says. Directing his attention to Jess now that he's done teasing his brother -- for now -- he asks, "What's he even complaining about? If it's anything like your costume, it's fine."

"He's complaining about the same thing he always complains about," Jess says. "That it's Halloween and he hates Halloween."

"Ah, right, that would do it," Dean says. "Well, come on, Sammy! If you don't want to come, I'll take Jess as my date instead."

"Don't you dare!"

"Then hurry up, would ya?" Dean asks. "I'd like to get to the bar before last call."

A door squeaks, then clicks shut. It takes a few moments, but eventually, Sam emerges in a Luigi costume that looks shockingly similar to Jess's Mario. The difference, excluding the color and the letter on the hat, is that Jess is smiling, while Sam looks like he wants to put a bullet in his brain.

"Ooh, Jess, you better be careful," Dean says with a smirk. "He's gonna get all the girls tonight."

"Oh, shut up," Sam mutters.

"Well, I think you look great," Jess tells him.

Because he's an ass, Dean adds, "She'd kiss your cheek, but she can't find it with that mustache."

"Why do we even let you celebrate Halloween with us?" Sam asks, exasperated.

"Because if you didn't, Jess would be all on her own, and Jess actually could pick up guys in a Mario costume," Dean says with a shrug. "Now come on. I want a drink."

"I can't believe you've been living 15 minutes away from a bar named Swayze's and you've never told me," Dean remarks as he, Sam, and Jess head inside. "You really are my least favorite brother."

"Because the competition's so high on that one," Sam deadpans, "what with me being your only brother and all."

"Yeah, well, even if we did find out that we had a secret brother that we never knew about, you'd still be my least favorite," Dean says.

The bar looks like a nice place. It seems to be overrun with college students in crappy costumes, but it's a nice place nonetheless. Dean isn't sure what he likes more, the hot baristas or the beautiful karaoke stage with his name on it. There's a man up on stage singing some song Dean's never heard, but he doesn't question it. Even as a pop star, he can't keep up with all the hit songs. He will admit, though, this song slaps. Kudos to him.

Speaking of hot bartenders, the trio is greeted by a pretty little thing that Dean might have to tap later. Sam and Jess will be fine on their own, right?

"Hey there," she greets them, and Dean suddenly begins to regret wearing the mask. Usually, she'd be talking to him, not them. He'll have to work in a subtle way to take it off next time he talks to her.

"Nice place," Dean remarks.

"Best beer and wings in the world," she says with a smile.

"Oh, I'll be the judge of that." Beer and wings? Damn, Jess really outdid herself finding this place.

"Oh, I'm sure you will, Red Hood." She holds out a basket. "But first, hand 'em over."

"Hand what over?" Sam asks.

"Your cellphone, of course," she says. "Ain't a party if everyone's on their phone."

"I think I'll pass, thanks," Dean says. He isn't letting that thing out of his sight. He has way too much on there that he can't risk someone getting ahold of. From unreleased music to the phone numbers of some very famous people, he can't let it go.

"House rules, buddy," she says. "Can't come in 'til you hand it over."

That's all it takes for Sam and Jess, who both pull out their phones and gently place them inside the basket.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I can't give mine up," Dean says.

"No, I'm sorry, sweetheart," she replies, "but you can't come on."

"What?"

She shrugs. "Them's the rules."

"Okay, look." Dean pops his mask off and tucks it under his arm. "I can't give you my phone. I have too much shit on there to let it out of my sight."

She eyes him up and down for a moment, a small smile on her lips. "Dean Winchester?"

"That would be me."

"Well, isn't this a pleasant surprise?" She licks her lips. "Still can't change the rules for you, but hey, if you're free in a few hours..."

Dean just rolls his eyes. "Fine, whatever. I'm out of here." He looks to Sam and Jess. "Don't have too much fun without me."

Sam scoffs. "Seriously? That's the dealbreaker for you? You found a place that combines Patrick Swayze, beer, and chicken wings, and you're gonna spend Halloween in a crappy motel instead because you won't give up your phone?"

"Do you have any idea how much trouble I would be in if someone stole my phone and found, like, Jo's number or something?" Dean asks. "She would murder me. She would legitimately murder me." Jo is one of the biggest actresses in the country. If her phone number got leaked, she'd be pissed, and rightfully so.

"Then you better head home and drop your phone off," the barista says. "Don't worry, we'll all still be here when you get back."

"Woah, hold on!" the man on stage says, the music cutting off suddenly. Dean doesn't pay it much attention until he hears, "Hey, Red Hood, you look shockingly familiar."

"I get that a lot," Dean calls back, without the extra aid of a microphone to get his voice across the room.

It gets loud when people realize who they're looking at, so they obviously can't have a yelling match. The man hops down off the stage in a swift jump and heads to the barista's side. "And what's going on over here?"

"He won't give up his phone," the barista explains.

"Hmm," the man hums before looking up at Dean. He holds out a hand. "Lee Webb. I own the place."

Dean hesitates, but he shakes Lee's hand, if only because he doesn't want to look bad. "Dean Winchester."

"I thought that was you," Lee remarks. "Tell you what. I'll let you keep your cell phone, just for the night, but you gotta do one small favor in return."

Dean crosses his arms. "Depends on what this 'small favor' is." He's had people ask him some to do some pretty fucked up things, from giving out his friends' phone numbers to sending nudes, and those are an immediate no.

"You think you could use that phone to give us a little shoutout?" Lee asks.

"You named the place Swayze's," Dean says. "I can't not give you a shoutout."

"Swayze fan?" Lee guesses. "Damn, you don't see many of us around -- or, at least, at our age."

"Don't I know it." He mentioned Swayze in an interview once, and none of his fans seemed to know who the guy was. It was horrible.

"Well, come on in, Dean," Lee says. "Welcome to Swayze's."
