Chapter 4

Zoe and her new-found siblings were still sat at their table in the Woolpack. Victoria's shift at the pub ended about half an hour ago, but she stayed so she could sit and have a laugh with her big brothers and little sister.

Amidst laughing, joking around with, and getting to know the three, Zoe forgot to ask a question that she thought was the most important.

"So, where are my parents? I mean, that's the main reason I came here. Not that I'm not glad I haven't met you guys, I just didn't know I had three long lost siblings when I started my journey here." She said. Suddenly, all the fun was drained from the situation and it was replaced with tension and depression. Robert, Andy and Victoria all exchanged looks and Zoe knew it was bad.

"What?" She asked slowly and carefully, concern in her voice.

"Um, Zoe, this really isn't easy to say, for any of us, but a few months after you were born, Mum was, um... Well, she... She d-died in a barn fire." Robert struggled to explain, his voice cautious and shaky.

"She... She did?" Zoe didn't know what to say, or how to react. She's never going to meet her mother. "W-what about our Dad?"

"He... He's dead as well." Andy choked out, feeling a lump in his throat. The tears were obvious in Victoria's eyes, and Robert was also close to breaking.

"He died from a heart attack about eight years ago." Andy added, his voice so shaky it was almost not understandable.

Zoe was just frozen in place, staring down at the table.

"Zoe?" Robert asked in concern after she didn't move or say anything. He placed his hand on hers, and that seemed to snap her out of her chance.

"They're both dead?" She muttered in the smallest voice, tears clear in the way she spoke, "I never even met them."

"They both loved you to bits, you know. Mum couldn't put you down when you were born. And Dad never wanted to lose you, but after Mum died, he just... he couldn't cope. He always regretted putting you up for adoption." Robert told me. She nodded solemnly.

"I-I understand. It can't have been easy looking after a crying baby after just losing his wife." She said thoughtfully. Andy shook his head.

"That's not why he wasn't coping. It was because you reminded him too much of Mum. It hurt him too much." He said.

"C'mon, I think there's someone you need to meet." Victoria said. She was still teary-eyed, but she tried to sound somewhat optimistic. Zoe looked up in curiosity, giving them a clear view of her tearstained face.

"Come on," Victoria urged, gently taking Zoe's hand and standing up. Robert and Andy seemed to know where they were going, but Zoe had no idea. She just let Victoria lead her through the pub and to the back, where there was a living room and kitchen. Robert and Andy followed. Sat at the kitchen table was a woman with short, wispy, blonde hair.

"Diane," Robert was the first one to greet her. Diane smiled upon seeing her adoptive/step-kids and walked over to them.

"What brings you three back here? If you're looking for Aaron, Robert, he's out with Adam." Diane said. Zoe noticed the way Robert smiled and turned slightly pink at the mention of Aaron. She'd have to ask him about it another time.

"Actually, Diane, we wanted to introduce you to someone." Victoria said, wrapping an arm around the 5ft girl. She'd always been short. She didn't think she was going to grow much more, to be honest. Not that she minded; her height was the least of her problems.

"This is Diane. She's always been like a mother to all of us." Andy told Zoe.

"Diane, this is Zoe." Robert said. Diane didn't take long to realise.

"As in Jack's Zoe?" She asked with wide eyes. She remembered how much Jack used to talk about the baby girl. Except, she didn't seem to be much of a baby anymore.

"Hiya, Pet." Diane smiled warmly at Zoe.

"Hi, it's nice to meet you." Zoe said, shy and polite, as she always was.

Zoe, Robert, Andy and Victoria stayed and talked with Diane for a while, until they all decided it was getting late.

"Okay, we need to decide where this one is going to be staying." Robert said, placing a hand on Zoe shoulder.

"I think we should let Zoe decide who she lives with." Victoria said, smiling at her sister. Zoe smiled back. They all looked at her, wanting to know her decision.

"Can I have some time to think about it? It's just, I kind of want to get to know you all a bit more before I decide something like that." Zoe said nervously.

"Of course, darlin'. Take as long as you need." Andy said.

"Where do you want to live until you decide?" Robert asked softly.

"Would it be okay if I stayed with Andy in the meantime? I mean, he was the one who found me, so, um, it would make sense." She rambled, afraid of hurting Robert or Victoria's feelings.

"That's fine, sweetheart. We'll see you tomorrow, yeah?" Robert said, smiling. Zoe was relieved he didn't look upset.
