Chapter Nine :Spillover part one
"
Fake friends are like shadows: always near you at your brightest moments, but nowhere to be seen at your darkest hour
True friends are like stars, you don't always see them but they are always there.
Oluwayemisi
Two weeks before our introduction ceremony, after an annoying quarterly meeting of Save Our Sisters. I had walked out of the meeting in a huff. Those old women expecting me to cough out twenty million as if I put the money in an account somewhere. OK, I'm very respectful of my elders but this is the height of it.
Dina walked in hot on my heels and began rattling off in a small voice, what my itinerary was for the day. And then the worst part of my day came: Dele, Bamidele Olaokun.
"Hi Dele, what are you doing here." My lips widened into a fake smile, I stood up and gestured for him to have a seat in front of me. There was a way Dina looked at him and I guessed there was no love lost between them.
"I'm here to talk about a few things, but hey they can wait." Dina gulps visibly and from the corner of my eye I see her left pinky shaking. I excuse Dina and she walks out shakily which means: there's more to that. I followed Dele's eyes and he was eyeraping Dina as she walked out of my office.
"What do you want, I have to be somewhere in two hours and I have a lot of work to do." I subtly look at my phone and turn my phone recorder on. Niyi's mom had set this weekend as a get away, she had invited my mom, aunt and Olaniyi's aunt, his sisters, Derin and Roheemoh, making a total of nine women.
" I want to know where Ella kept that two hundred million, I used to be a signatory to the account and the last time I talked to the person in charge of my accounts, she said I'd been taken of the list. I want to know if you knew anything about the money."
I looked at him and I hoped to God I had a very skeptical expression and reasoned "I have no idea, what money, tell me please. It's essential that I know where that money is."
I looked at my phone subtly again and saw that we had talking for almost two minutes. I looked back up at him and flashed him my fakest smile ever. If he wasn't so into trying to take money that isn't his, he'd have seen that there's nothing good about my smile to him.
"I think she willed it to that her sister in the US. Because she willed all of her jewelry to my sister. I need to know where that money is so I can return it to you, you need it to run this place smoothly. Because I hear you are going to have problems paying salaries from next year."
I folded my shaking fingers on my desk and I came to the realization that someone must have been snitching on us. There's no way he'd know about what is happening if he didn't have a good spy. I'll find out that later. I'll deal with that later.
"So, you think she willed it to her sister in the US, maybe, because she talked to her about a day before she died, her call log had her sister as one of her last called." I sincerely hoped he believed that cock and bull story I spinned. But truth be told Ella and her elder sister has been estranged after her marriage to Evil natured Dele. She called to beg her about an hour before she told me the secret. She called to apologize to her sister as if she knew she was dying in two hours.
"I think so too, but why don't you ask her lawyer, he should have a better idea of what is involved." I'm so sorry for him because I know surely that Barrister Oderinde will not ever be bribed or blocked.
He waves his hands in a dismissive manner before saying " Do you think I'd not asked him before coming here, as usual he is stiff."
Well he's stiff to just you, he's very cordial to me and the other girls, he's even eyeing Dieko.
Òlè àlâpà mà sísè(One who has arms but refuses to work). I looked at my phone and decided it was time to walk him out.
"Dele, I'm still going to see Niyi's mom later on and I need to finish some paperwork before leaving. Śhé ò mind ( I hope you don't mind)."
He stands up and then says "I hope you know Niyi hasn't gotten over Monica, hell, he hasn't stopped loving her. You'll just be a pawn in his chess game. I just hope that you know that he might never love you." He walks out.
I look at his retreating back and sigh loudly. I turn off my recorder and save the conversation. I send it to Niyi with the caption 'hear what you friend came to say'.
Olaniyi
My phone pings quietly in my pocket and I'm reluctant to take it out and look at it, but it's my personal phone number and I have to see if it's important.
It's Yemisi and she sent me a voice note, I look up to the man talking.
"Gentlemen and lady, this meeting is adjourned till next week, Lolu please do a better job with your ideas, they sound well but they have loopholes." I looked at their faces round the room "Good day people."
As I stepped out of the conference room, I asked Farhan for my Bluetooth and I turned the voice note on. After listening, I deliberated what to do to Dele, he needs to feel some heat. He has too much free time on his hands and whoever has been snitching on Yemisi will only have themselves to blame.
I look up to see Farhan frowning slightly at me " Sir, do you need anything? "
" I need you to call one of our private investigators and tell him to meet me here". He types on his iPad quickly and looks at me expectantly " that's all for now, Farhan ."
If there's anything that I'm sure of its Îyâ Niyi's love for Yemisi, I saw them share love for food, charities and men on the day of our family introduction. Later on while we drove home, my mom kept singing her praises and how the ewedu made her day.
Dele has no idea what he's talking about, but there's nothing I'll say to Yemisi that will take her mind off the fact that she thinks I still love Monica.
A sharp knock on my door jerked me out of my reverie. I looked up to see Momowa, I sighed hard and slouched back into my chair, he walked to the seat in front of me.
I frown at his slouch. "What is wrong with you?" He sighs loudly and waves his hands lazily. "Wonu's ex boyfriend is back." Now I know what his problem is, he still doesn't believe Wonu loves him.
"That fool hurt my sister, I let him go because Wonu begged me, if you think she still loves him , you should have a rethink." I pause to make sure my point sinks in "Wonu loves you dearly. That girl is love with you. Madly. "
"Niyi, I know that she loves me, but she loved Travis all her life. She's known him for like forever, I'm only a man who she married, they planned to have kids together, the whole yards." Married people have so many worries. He gets up from his seat and walks to the mini fridge in my official gets out a bottled water.
"I'll fight for Wonu !" That's more like the spirit, I know no man wants to have a threat to his marriage, fighting for what you want is ideal. I'll fight anyone, anyone who tries to stop Yemisi and I even before we take off . I'll be ruthless.
