Chapter 9

[Sorry for the LONG wait between chapters! I saw the newsies movie yesterday and remembered how much I love this show.]

David walked along Morris and Oscar, feeling more and more uncomfortable. He couldn't stop thinking about Katherine.

"What did you do to her?" He finally burst out.

"Nothing! We just teased her a little bit." Morris said.

"Why?" David asked.

"She's a nice girl. Why not?" Oscar smirked.

"She didn't seem too happy with it." He said quietly.

"I don't think it matters to you, does it?" Morris said, his voice taking on a threatening tone.

"N-no. Sorry I said anything." David said, retreating back into his shell. "I've got to go find Les." He shuffled away from the brothers, his heart pounding. Katherine was right. They were not the good guys. Who were the good guys? It wasn't the Delanceys, but it couldn't be the newsies either. Was anyone the good guy?

Jack turned to face the newsies. "We've got to do something more. They got away with those papers way too easily! We aren't making a difference! No one cares!"

"We could go find the scabs and make sure they don't sell any more papes. If you know what I mean." said Finch.

"If we send them home with a couple of bumps and bruises there's no way they'll come back for more." shouted another voice.

Jack smiled. "Perfect. I call Davey."

Katherine rushed home, ready to write. But what could she write? She didn't know whose side to be on. Sure, Jack Kelly and the newsies were skirt chasing egomaniacs, but those Delanceys were monsters! There was David, but he was somehow friends with those terrible brothers. There was no good guy! She groaned and slumped down at her desk.

"Katherine?" A voice called from upstairs.

Katherine stood up. "Yes father?" She shouted back.

Her father's footsteps thudded down the stairs.

"What are you writing about?" He asked.

"Nothing, so far." Katherine sighed.

"It's funny, you know. Apparently, my newsboys are on strike. Now I know you'd never take their side, right darling?"

"Of course not. They're no good."

"Good, good. Make sure you finish all those reviews." He smiled and went back upstairs.

Katherine sighed. I guess her father had already made up her mind for her. The newsies had to be the bad guys.

William sat with Martha, braiding her hair. She was singing some silly ditty and bouncing happily.

"What're you so excited about?" He asked.

Martha turned back to him excitedly. "Willy, I'm in love!"

"Oh my! With who?"

"With Les!

"Ohh, well that's just dandy!"

"Have you ever been in love Willy?"

"Um, no."

"Oh that's so sad. Being in love is so wonderful." Martha sighed.

Willy laughed. "I'm sure it is."

"Hey look, it's David and Les!" Martha said, pointing at the approaching two.

"Oh no, I'd better keep you and Les away from each other."

"You better not!" Martha laughed, hopping up to greet Les. "Hello Les." She said, batting her eyelashes.

"Hello Martha." Les replied, blushing.

Davey tried his best to contain his laughter, but the giggles eventually came soaring out. William joined in.

"Hey! What're you laughing at?" Les said angrily.

"Nothing! Will was just making funny faces!" Davey lied, laughter still erupting.

"Sure..." Les said suspiciously. "Hey look, it's that Jack guy! He sure looks angry."
