Chapter 11
"Duck!" Les shouted at David as a newsie's fist came flying at his brother. They were all here, every single one. It was twenty or more newsies against their small band of 5, including 2 kids! They were hopeless.
"There's no way we can fight them!" Otto shouted.
"We have to surrender!" William called back. David was hesitant. He knew they couldn't win, but he didn't want to just give up. He couldn't.
"David! Come on!" Otto shouted, retreating.
"We can't just run away!" David replied. "We have to do something!"
"Like what?" William groaned. "Talk to them?"
"Exactly!" David said. He turned to the newsies and stood his ground. "Go ahead and run away." David said, trying to pretend to be as brave as possible. This was insane! These guys were mean! He knew Jack would beat him up on sight. He could be seriously injured!
"U-uh...stop! We can talk this out! Fighting isn't the answer!" he said, stumbling to find the right thing to say. Racetrack stepped forward.
"What. Is your mommy gonna come help us fix our problems? Are you gonna put us in time out?"
"N-no. We don't have to fight. If someone could just--"
"We've tried this. It doesn't work. Talking is stupid. Punching is fun." Race raised his fist. David dodged it. The tension was rising. Everyone was ready to break out into a huge fight. They were on the edge of their seats, waiting for someone to throw the first punch.
"Uh oh! That's my pal. I don't think you should hurt him." Oscar suddenly spoke up. He stood with Morris, with a bat in hand. The two were decked out with weapons. Brass knuckles, bats, and even pocket knifes.
Race glared at Oscar. Then, in an instant, David was on the floor. Morris swung his fist at the nearest newsie, and chaos ensued. It was all in. Nobody was going easy on anybody else.
"Jack! Jack!" Crutchie screamed. Morris and Oscar were hitting him with his own crutch, viciously tearing into the boy. He screamed for help, tears pouring down his cheeks. "Jack!"
One smack from Oscar's bat left him out cold. Morris dragged him away while Oscar held Jack back.
David watched the terrible scene go down. He had never felt back for Jack before, but now he felt a deep sadness for him. He couldn't believe what the Delanceys were doing.
"STOP!" he shouted, running at Oscar and knocking his hand away from Jack. Oscar turned back to David, fury in his eyes.
"You're on our side right? So act like it!" Oscar shouted, slicing David's arm with the pocket knife. He crumpled to the ground, wincing in pain.
"What is going on here!" a voice shouted from behind everyone. Katherine burst through, her brown curls bouncing. She saw David on the ground and rushed to him. "Are you all right? Who did this? Do you need anything!" she blubbered, using her skirt to wipe up the blood. Jack, Oscar, and Morris all watched from above.
"I'll be okay." David stuttered out. Katherine nodded, and then jumped up. "Which one of you did this? Huh? I want answers!"
"It was Oscar." David mumbled.
Katherine turned sharply. "Oscar Delancey. How dare you!"
"Sorry Kathy, it's just in my blood--"
"No, it is not! And don't call me Kathy! I am not your friend." Katherine's fury grew. "Why do you need to hurt people! It's wrong! It's horrible! You are the most terrible, awful,---"
She was cut off by the pocket knife being pressed to her neck.
"Shut up." Oscar growled. Katherine was taken aback. "Oscar..." she whispered, terrified. He pulled her into him, still keeping the knife dangerously close. "Never talk like that about me again, you filthy girl."
"Oscar, I think--" Morris tried to say something, but Oscar cut him off.
"Shut up. Everyone shut up!" Oscar screamed.
"Oscar you're not thinking straight. Let her go." Morris said, trying his best not to upset Oscar any more.
"I know exactly what I'm doing Morris. All my life I've been told how bad and awful I am. Well none of you are much better! Nobody really likes me; not even my own brother! Everyone is scared of me! I'm a person too!" Oscar ranted.
"The whole holding a knife up to a person's neck really isn't helping your case..." Jack mumbled.
"Shut up Kelly. You're the worst of them all."
Everyone stood in silence. Katherine tried her best not to break down right there. If she so much as gulped her neck would be sliced. Tears trickled down her face. She was terrified. Nobody dared to do anything. It would be too risky.
"Oscar, what do you want!" Jack finally burst out. He hated seeing Katherine so terrified.
"I want...I don't know! I want to make all of you miserable!"
"So kill her." David stated, standing up.
"What?"
