Ch. 29

Julia's POV

Honey wake up...

Wake up dear...

It is time

"What do you mean?"

Wake up love... It is your birthday....

Peeking from under the covers, I saw him grinning from ear to ear. He started tickling me.

I blinked open my wet eyes. Remembering Samuel brought tears to my eyes. I miss my babies and I was scared for the baby that was still inside me. All I could comprehend was darkness. With a heavy head, I attempted to stand up. My feet were numb, and there was a pain in my chest. I tried to inhale deeply to relax. I should find a way out. How can a blind person live in darkness all the time? It was so difficult and one hell of a frightening experience.

I could feel with the tips of my fingers the cold wall. I leaned and tried to find something, anything but found nothing. I fell to the ground, hugged my legs and started crying. Abruptly, a soft breeze of air pulled me from my trance. I followed the cold breeze to find a window. I tried to unlock it, but all in vain. I can break the window glass. I started searching in the dark room. After what seemed like hours, I found a box in the corner. I opened it, blankets and pillows. I have to find something heavy to throw it at the window. One step after the other, I walked cautiously. I kicked something, knelt down and picked it up; a dusty mug. I held it in my hands and threw it at the window. The glass shattered instantly. The smashing of the window was loud, shards of glass flying everywhere. I could hear voices and heavy steps upstairs. I jumped through the broken window and winced in pain as the remaining sharp glasses touched my skin. My heart was racing and started running. Fortunately, no one was chasing me. I was running on the highway, little cars passing by. I saw a police car with two police officers, I ran towards their direction.

"Help me please," I yelled.

The police officer asked, "Are you alright, ma'am?"

"Someone ....kidnapped... maybe," I stuttered.

"I need you to relax now. Take a deep breath-" The officer was interrupted.

"Bob, look at this." Both of them stared at the papers. "You are right! Mrs. Gates, you are safe now." Bob opened the police car for me while the other police officer was busy on the phone.

I didn't realize what was happening and how it happened? Blood was everywhere. Fear was invading my consciousness. I had to survive for my children. I shouldn't give up ... I shouldn't lose faith.

I would keep going.

I would survive.

I would never let go.

Samuel P.O.V

How much I abhor the word waiting! I couldn't do anything. I detested the feeling of being unable to do anything. I was freaking out. I felt so weak. I didn't want to think of the option not seeing my other half again, but this situation was freaking me out. I couldn't take it anymore. Joseph was standing by my left side with a black eye, looking guilty as ever. Yes, I punched him. It was his fault after all. He was reckless, and he deserved it. Samantha was trying her best to comfort me, and George was deep in thoughts with a vexed expression on his face. I wonder what his problem was!

I hadn't seen kids all day, and I was wondering what they were doing?

"Sam, I'm fine," I lied. I was far away from being fine. "Go home and stay with Dorothy and Joe. They need you."

She nodded her head, "call me if you hear anything."

"Of course," I nodded.

"I'll drive you there," George volunteered.

As they reached the door and descended down the stairs of the police station, Detective Harold received a phone call. He looked at me and nodded gravely.

"Let's go," he commanded and I followed. "Two police officers reported that an anonymous suspect had been seen chasing your wife. Fortunately, she was running in the right direction. She is safe now." He fixed his gaze at me and said, "After their last report, they guys couldn't reach them. They lost contact."

I clenched jaw. I felt my mouth dry. I was finding difficult to hear his words.

The minute we reached our destination, people were gathering and I couldn't observe my surrounding. With every step taken, my heart was beating out of control. Bullets were visible through the front windscreen. Two police officers were shot.

"Julia," I yelled.

I couldn't control the urge; I made a run for it. Blood was everywhere. "No, this can't be!" There was blood inside the car. "But where's Julia?" I asked no one in particular, but Harold was nearby. "Detective, you have to see this!"
