Ch9: The Midnight Duel

Bonnie and Amy couldn't believe the news when I told them after seeing McGonagall and Wood after the flying lesson.

"You're the Seeker?" Amy exclaims, dropping her quill as she and Bonnie were completing some Potions homework.

"Yep," I say, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. "And the youngest Seeker in over a century, according to McGonagall."

"Wow," Bonnie says, looking slightly annoyed. I guess she's just upset that I got something instead of her. I kind of feel bad now.

"Wow, what?" Hermione asks, coming over from the portrait hole. "What'd I miss?"

"Sarah's the new Gryffindor Seeker!" Amy says excitedly.

"What?" Hermione exclaims. "But first years never make the house teams."

"I know," I say. "My first training session is Sunday night and I'm so excited, you have no idea."

Amy, Bonnie and Hermione spend most of the time on the common room, gaping at me. I get that it's great, but it's not absolutely butt-kicking awesome.

Not knowing where Harry and Ron are, the four of us make our way to dinner, chatting about Quidditch, and explaining the rules to Hermione.

No one seems to know about my making of the team, which is a good thing because Wood wants to keep Harry and I a secret.

"Well done," I voice says in my ear.

I whip around from talking to Bonnie, to face Fred and George Weasley.

"Wood's just told us," Fred says.

"We're on the team too-"

"-Beaters."

"Our job, is to make sure that you don't get bloodied up too much," George says.

"But don't worry," Fred reassures me. "If a Bludger hits you in the head, you'll probably wake up in about two days."

I stare at them. Are they kidding? Would somebody on the other team actually aim a Bludger at my head?

"Well, see ya Sarah, Amy," George says, and they move off back up to their friends, Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson and Katie Bell.

"Having your last meal, Potter?" Comes a drawling voice from behind me that obviously belongs to Malfoy.

I turn around to face him, plastering a fake smile on my face.

"Nope," I say. "I'm staying right here."

He just glares at me.

"You know," I say. "You're a lot braver when you've got your two goons with you. What are they always with you for - moral support?"

Both Malfoy and I notice Harry and Ron sit down at the table, but Malfoy chooses not to acknowledge them.

"I'll take you any time on your own," he says. "Tonight, if you want. Wizards Duel. Wands only - no contact. What's the matter, never heard of a wizards duel?" He adds, as I give him a look.

"Of course I have you blithering idiot," I say. "I'm not stupid. Besides, I have better things to do than meet you in the dead on night."

"Scared to get caught are we, Potter?" Malfoy sneers.

"Didn't you hear me, Malfoy?" I say. "I have much better things to do."

"I'll do it then," Harry says loudly, causing a gasp from Amy.

No, Harry, no. Don't you be the idiot.

"I'm his second, who's yours?" Ron says, backing Harry up.

Malfoy glances over to Crabbe and Goyle, who are standing behind him, sizing them up.

"Crabbe," he finalises. "Midnight, trophy room. It's always unlocked."

After that, Malfoy and his goons leave. I turn back to Harry, giving him a look.

"Gosh, Harry, you are such an idiot. The reason I declined is because it's obvious that he's not going to show up. He's just tricking you into getting in trouble. Filch will probably catch you before you even get to the trophy room."

Harry, not listening, turns to Ron.

Git.

"What's a Wizards Duel?" He asks. "And what do you mean, you're my 'second'?"

"Well, a Wizards Duel is just a duel, but with wands," Ron explains, very lightly. "And a second is there to takeover if you die."

Seeing the horrified look on Harry's face, I say, "Harry, people only die in proper wizard duels. The most you and Malfoy will do is send sparks to each other, because you know like two spells. As I said before, he probably won't go. Promise me you won't go, please?"

Harry just looks at me, but then turns to Ron, making me sigh loudly.

"Let's go," I mutter to Hermione, Bonnie and Amy, and we leave the boys, talking through what they'll do tonight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 11:00pm that night, after giving up trying to get the boys to stay, I head up to bed, in the hope that I can go to sleep, even though worrying about Harry and Ron.
I manage to get some sleep, but I am woken up by the door creaking open at one in the morning. It's Hermione, dressed in her dressing gown and slippers.
"Where have you been?" I ask her, making her jump.
"No - no where," she says uncertainly.
"Hermione," I say, giving her a look. "Seriously, where were you?"
"And I'm serious, no where." She says, and she gets into her own bed.
"We're you with a boy?" I question.
I get no answer, but the slight sound of snores coming from her bed to say that she's fallen asleep.
Sighing, I go back to sleep. I guess I'll just have to find out tomorrow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

The next morning, I get up and ready as per usual, and head down to breakfast with Amy.

Half-way through breakfast I remember something.

"I forgot to go to Hagrid's!" I exclaim, dropping my fork.

"Huh?" Amy says, with her mouth full of bacon.

"I was supposed to go to Hagrid's yesterday!" I say.

"You can go after breakfast, right?" Amy says.

Nodding, I quickly eat the rest of my eggs, before waiting for Bonnie so we can go down to Hagrid's.

We quickly race out the front doors and down the sloped pathway, down to Hagrid's hut, which is a small house near the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

Without a second thought, I knock on the huge wooden door.

I hear a bark from inside, followed by footsteps before the door opens to reveal Hagrid.

"Hullo Sarah, Bonnie," Hagrid says cheerily. "Who's this?"

"Hey Hagrid," I say. "Oh, this is Amy."

"Hello," Amy says, smiling kindly.

"Hullo Amy. Come inside, come inside," he says, opening the door even wider, to allow into the hut.

It only has one room. Large hams and pheasants hang from the ceiling, a copper kettle is boiling on the open fire, a small table is situated in the centre of the room, with four chairs surrounding it and there is a large bed squished in the corner with a patchwork quilt.

"This is cosy," I say.

"Make yerselves at home," Hagrid says, bustling over to the fire, where the kettle is whistling.

Amy and I sit down at the table, while Hagrid pours us both a steaming cup of tea.

"Why didn't yeh come yesterday?" He asks, setting the cups down on the table.

"Sorry about that, Hagrid," I say. "I was really busy. First of all, yesterday I found out that I became the new Gryffindor Seeker("Well done!" Hagrid says to that) and then I was trying to keep Harry and Ron from going to meet Malfoy."

"Meetin' Malfoy?" Hagrid says. "What for?"

"He challenged Harry to a wizards duel, and Ron went with him," I explain. "I tried to get them to stay, because I knew they'd get caught, but they didn't listen."

"Ah well, they're safe, right?" Hagrid says. "An' they didn't get caught by Filch?"

"No, they're fine," Bonnie says.

"Well, that's the main thing," Hagrid says.

The conversation then turns to the classes and how we like them, then it turned to the teachers and staff. I find it funny when Hagrid calls Filch a git, and then the conversation turns to Snape.

"But he seems to really hate me," I say, folding my arms on the table.

"Rubbish!" Hagrid says. "Why should he?"

"I dunno," I say. "He just does."

As I rest my head on the table, I notice a copy of the Daily Prophet lying there near Bonnie.

"Hey Hagrid," I say. "Can I look at this?"

"Go ahead," Hagrid says in reply, then goes on to chat with Bonnie and Amy.

I pull the newspaper toward myself, and flip it to look at the front cover. In but letters at the top of the page, it says:

GRINGOTTS BREAK-IN LATEST

Below that is a picture, followed by an article:

Investigations continue into the break-in at Gringotts on 31 July, wildly believed to be the work of dark witches and wizards unknown.

Gringotts goblins today insisted that nothing had been taken. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied that very same day.

"But we're not telling you what was in there, so keep your noses out if you know what's good for you," said a Gringotts spokes goblin this afternoon.

Hold on, that was July 31st, my birthday. That's the day we went to Diagon Alley. Could the break in have happened while we were there?

"Hagrid, that break-in happened on my birthday," I say. "It might have happened when we - or you and Harry - were there."

Hagrid grunts in reply, and offers me a rock cake.

The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied that very same day. I wonder what the thieves were looking for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's lunchtime before Amy, Bonnie and I make our way back to the castle. We sit together, secluded from Harry, Ron and Hermione at the Gryffindor table while we eat, and for the rest of the afternoon we are in the common room playing Wizard Chess.
That night as we walk into the Common Room after dinner, we can hear Harry and Ron whispering about something in front of the fire.
"...what was it standing on?"
"...what could it have been guarding?"
"...why would they keep a thing like that locked up in a school, it's a danger to us."
"...no wonder Dumbledore wanted the students to stay away."
Sighing, I walk over to them and stand in front of them.
"Spill."
Ron looks up at me. "Spill what?" He says, acting oblivious.
"You know what," I say. "What happened last night?"
"Nothing," Harry says quickly, playing with his hands.
"Tell me," I say, raising my eyebrows.
They both shake their heads quickly.
"I'm giving you one chance to tell me," I say. "Spill."
"No!" Ron says.
"Tell me," I press on, hoping they will tell me. It can't just have been that Malfoy did or didn't turn up to the trophy room.
"Go away," Harry says.
"Harry, tell me," I almost plead.
"Fine!" Ron says, giving up. "Remember that time when you, Harry and Hagrid went to Gringotts in the summer?"
"I didn't go with Harry and Hagrid, but go on," I say, smiling, knowing I got him to crack.
"Well, Hagrid took a package from vault 713. He obviously thought that it was going to get stolen, if not that day," Ron says.
Harry sighs exasperated, but let's Ron continue.
Ron goes on to tell me about how they read the Daily Prophet article, and about the stolen package. He then tells me a recount of what happened last night; how they fell for Malfoy's bait, that Hermione followed them to the trophy room, and then they were almost caught by Filch, so they ran. They ended up in the third floor corridor, the forbidden side, and entered a room where there was a three-headed dog. Now they've scared Hermione off and she's not talking to them.
I smile. I finally got the truth.
A/N:
Okay, this is pretty late, but I do have my reasons. Mostly I've been laden down with a million (well, maybe not a million. More like 8) assignments, that are all due within these next couple of weeks. These assignments need time and patience and attention, so I really need to take a break from Wattpad and my (non-existent) social life.
So, sadly, there probably won't be any updates until around the 10th of September, I'm really sorry about this, but school comes first.
I won't leave though without leaving some questions:
1. When do you go back to school? If you already have, when did you go back? (I'm actually in the middle of a school term so ew)
2. Have you got any piercings? (Just my ears)
3. If you were stranded on an island, and only had 5 things, what would you have? (My phone, some food, a torch, matches and wood)
Peace out guys, love you!
~Elise
