Even though I was here on unofficial business, I did everything by the book. As was expected of me, I talked to different employees in the building, asked for their concerns, about their responsibilities, their work environment, et cetera.
The cleaning crew consisted of three people, two Hispanic looking females, and a very tall, pale guy. Even though I didn't know his name, I assumed that Johanes would be a man with a Northener ethnicity, maybe even someone from the other continent. The man standing before me did fit the description, and he was also a lot quieter than the two females that were showing me the building. The two ladies, Ana and Maria-José were over the moon that their esteemed Alpha had chosen them to lead me around the building. They were honoured that Headquarters thought them fit for the task, and they told me everything there was to know about the building.
As it turned out, because a lot of people feel like they are better than the simpletons cleaning the room, they usually go unnoticed and therefore hear everything that goes on in the building. They told me every bit of gossip that they heard or saw, and some things were definitely worth looking into. Like the fact that the manager on floor 2 has an affair with a software developer on floor 4, while he is supposed to have a happy family with his wife and three children. Or the fact that they recently hired a new Qualified Person that oversees the production in another facility that earned quite a lot more than the previous QP, while having the same qualifications as the previous one, who was fired unexpectedly.
That gave me an idea.
What if I could file a report so detailed with all kinds of incriminating information about this facility, that Headquarters would be forced to investigate the institute with an enormous amount of precision? Someone else would be sent in my stead, all the systems would be checked, security footage would be watched, and for sure they would see that someone had tampered with the destination coordinates of a weapons transport train.
With a bit of luck, this Johanes would confirm to Ambassador Montgomery that I had done my job. As we came to the end of my rounds, I profusely thanked Ana and Maria-José for their tremendously useful help. "Headquarters thank you very much, ladies and sir," I said to them gratefully. "With your help I think we now know everything we need to. This will not be forgotten."
The broad smile the women gave me seemed to almost split their faces in halves with glee. "No problem, miss DeVoe, we are honoured that you found us worthy to talk to."
I smiled at them gently. "Could you two please find Mr. Greengrass for me and ensure that he has finished the files I need? He can send them to Headquarters directly. Please also write the full names and chip numbers of all three of you on top of the document, I wish to make note to Headquarters of your services." While the ladies scurried off happily, whispering to each other in complete surprise, I turned to the lanky blond man in front of me. "In the meantime, Johanes, could you please show me to the ladies lavatory? I wish to inspect it for privacy violations."
As I expected, I wasn't actually led to the ladies room. We walked past several toilets, and never once did he enter them. Like all public spaces in the building, it would probably be full of detectable and hidden cameras and listening devices. Except of course, in the toilets themselves.
At least, I hoped so. Because if there were that would be absolutely gross and creepy.
If I were to hand over the ultra-secret and utterly treasonous coordinates to him there, there would be no doubt that we would get caught. Of course, Johanes and I would be arrested for treason, and either be executed or forced to serve in prison in the Fortis pack for the rest of our days. It would utterly destroy Vir, probably.
He would hate me, of course, and would want nothing to do with me anymore, but his body would desperately miss its soulmate. I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood, and willed myself to think about something else. I had hope that my plan would work. Thanks to Ana and Maria-José I had a lot of incriminating evidence that something fishy was going on at this building. Headquarters was sure to investigate this in more detail. I just had to hope with all my heart that it would happen before the train took off, and that they would actually find that someone had tampered with the destination coordinates.
Instead, Johanes walked me towards a whole section of the building we hadn't been to before. I could see dust in the corners and a yellowish colour on the walls. The old fluorescent tubes on the ceiling were flickering annoyingly in a high frequency, which gave me the start of a headache. We turned a corner and Johanes walked right into, indeed, a ladies' room.
I hesitated briefly before I entered after him, but decided to follow him anyway. When I entered, it became clear based on the godawful smell that no one had gone here for a long time. Breathing through my mouth, I stared at who I presumed was Johanes for a long time, since he had yet to speak to me. "Well?" I said.
"Old part of building. Abandoned." he said in a broken English, with indeed, a High Northener accent. I wondered what pack he was from, because his accent obviously originated from way more up North than the Sensus pack.
"Here no cameras. Other toilets gender neutral." He then added in a deep, low voice, before looking at me with piercing blue eyes. "You know Montgomery?"
I nodded shakily, feeling my breath come out in short pants. "I do."
"Hmm." Johanes said. "Bad man, lot of money, lot of... influence." It seemed as if he wanted to make a point here, as he continued staring at me intently.
I simply nodded again. "Agreed. He is..." I searched for the proper wording. "More powerful than I would like to admit."
At this Johanes sighed deeply, relief shining in his eyes. "Coordinates?" he asked then. I turned away from him slightly, and grabbed the tiny piece of paper I had written the coordinates on from my bra. It stuck slightly to the skin of my breasts because of the thin layer of sweat that had formed due to the stressful situation. I gripped the note in my hand and checked whether the coordinates were the proper ones.
Of course, they were, I had written them down this morning myself. With a shaking hand I gave Johanes the paper. The lanky man took it from me with an equal amount of nerves, before looking me in the eye again and nodding. "I will let contact know you gave coordinates."
I thanked him with a quivering smile. He clearly wanted do to this just as much as I did. Which meant, not at all.
He then turned to the door resolutely, and marched right out of it. I shook off my nerves, and put on a mask of indifference and light annoyance again. As we walked back to the entrance of the main building, we both didn't say a word, the silence said enough.
"Miss DeVoe!" Mr. Greengrass came running up to me with his face full of worry. "I apologize humbly, Miss DeVoe, but the document you requested is not yet finished completely. I estimate we will need another 68 minutes to bring it up to standard." He looked as if I was going to punch him in anger because he hadn't done what I asked of him within the set deadline.
To be honest, that deadline was absolutely impossible to meet.
"I suppose it is alright, Mr. Greengrass," I turned to him with a bored expression, as he tried with tiny hops in his step to keep up with Johanes and me. "You are in luck you have employed an extremely useful cleaning crew that has given me almost all the information I need. I expect you will hand deliver the paperwork to Headquarters by the end of the day. That should give you plenty of time."
I saw the worry slide off of the man within seconds, and I actually had to bite my already sore lip again to keep from bursting out laughing since it was so funny to see. "Of course, Miss DeVoe, thank you for your lenience, it is most appreciated."
We soon reached the front door, and the exit to the streets. As Mr Greengrass started the process the open the doors to let me out, I turned to him and Johanes once again. "Thank you for your services today. Headquarters will contact you."
Mr. Greengrass blubbered all kinds of niceties, thanks and honourable greetings towards the people in Headquarters. Johanes stayed silent, just staring at me, contemplating whether or not to say something.
Just as I started walking out of the building, I heard him say a few words softly. "Please make it right."
