26.

I did keep coming back each day. After my reading, or after helping Betty with personal assistant work, I went up to Vir's office to see him. Usually, we would talk for a couple of minutes and I would proudly tell him what I'd read that day - maybe even show off for a bit. He would listen to me and smile, then we would hug - well, I would hug him, he would accept it. After that, I was on my way again.
He was very good at making me talk about myself, my activities and plans, whilst he himself kept quiet. But hey, it was something! At least I was allowed in his office daily now, so I couldn't really complain. Yet I here I was, complaining to Daniel. He had become quite a good friend during my stay here, and I was glad I had gotten to know him.
"You know, it's just very frustrating. Am I supposed to be happy that my Goddamn soulmate allows me to see him ten minutes a day?" We sat at one of the tables in the canteen, drinking a cup of dark black coffee. Daniel sat across from me, sipping from the cup, wincing when the hot liquid burned his tongue.
"I am a girl with needs you know, and while I'm all for feminism and such, I should not have to make all the moves right? He can initiate things too..."
Daniel just nodded and took a bite from his obnoxiously large chocolate chip cookie. "Hmmhmm."
I sucked my cheeks full of air in annoyance at his response, and blew it out quickly, feeling frustrated.
"And even when we meet, he makes me talk about me all the time, I can never ask a question."
"Maybe you just don't ask questions and you're just talking constantly."
I gave him a deadly glare. If he was going to respond, he might as well be useful, contrary to this reply.
"I tried, he just didn't answer me. Then he became very nervous, moody and snappy, and I walked out." I lay my head on the table with a loud bang, causing my coffee to spill a few droplets on the table surface. "Maybe we're just not meant to be mates.
Daniel sighed and took another bite of his cookie. "Be patient, he'll come around. He needs some time to adapt, he can't handle change very well."
Even though him talking with his mouth full was disgusting me, I was curious immediately. "Why not?"
He pulled a face, a mix between I-really-want-to-tell-you and I'm-sorry-it's-not-my-place-to-tell-you.
"You're not going to tell me are you." I stated, slightly annoyed.
He smiled apologetically. "Sorry, but no. I want to, but-"
"Not your place yhea yhea I get it." I sighed. "I hope Vir will tell me soon, though. I don't like the way it is now."
"I know, but don't worry. Soon all will b-"
"Good day Love birds! How are you doing today?" interrupted Ambassador Montgomery. He smirked knowingly as he stood next to us. His black and white clothing very well showed his position as the ambassador of the Iustitia Pack.
"Wonderful, Ambassador," Daniel answered smoothly, not at all showing emotion when Quinten said 'Love Birds'. "Thank you so much for your interest."
Okay that was too much, the sarcasm was very obvious when he said that. I had trouble trying not to laugh.
"I was wondering if I can steal miss Devoe from you for a while, Beta. If you can miss her, that is."
Daniel looked at me expectantly, his eyes questioning. I nodded, and pushed my chair backwards. It made an awful screeching sound, and I cringed as I stood up. "Of course, Ambassador," I answered, smiling reassuring at Daniel. "I'll see you tonight, okay?"
He nodded before winking flirtatiously. "Sure thing."
"Great!" Glad that we had showed off our acting skills again, I walked next to Ambassador Montgomery. At that moment, my nerves started kicking in again. He wanted something from me, I could feel it. Trying to seem confident, I had to give it my all to not drag my feet across the carpet. Although I was sure he knew I was anxious, he showed nothing but a cocky smirk on his face. He was enjoying the suspense.
"There are cameras and tiny microphones everywhere in this building, but if you talk soft enough, no one will be able to follow our talk."  He said it in a whisper. "Now here is what I want you to do."
He started walking closer to me, our sides almost touching. I shivered in disgust, not wanting to be even remotely close to him. That right was reserved to my mate, even though he wasn't particularly interested in that at the moment.
"The wellbeing of my pack always comes first, even though I'm currently surrounded by people that don't have to measure their intelligence to mine. There is a rumour that a trainwagon of newly designed high-tech weapons is going to an off-site testing facility of the Sapientiae pack in a few weeks. According to my careful calculations, the location of that facility is on the other side of the continent, a couple thousand kilometres south of the Iustitia Pack. I want you to change the coordinates of the train's destination to the Iustitia Pack. We can really use those weapons, Livia, and you really need to stay with your mate, don't you?"
I swallowed uncomfortably, not sure what to do with all this information. Making sure to keep my voice low as well, I confirmed what I heard. "You want me to change the final destination of the train with high-tech weapons to the Iustitia Pack?"
Ambassador Montgomery nodded with an evil smile, his icy eyes looking at me in cold calculation.
I scrunched my eyebrows and bit the inside of my cheek. "And how am I supposed to do that? You have said it yourself, I'm not at all intelligent nor smart."
The ambassador chuckled, and turned around a corner, his hands relaxed behind his back as he whistled a song. Impatiently, I waited until he was done.
"That specific hallway has double the amount of spying equipment," he explained. He straightened his black-and-white suit befire continuing. "Your soulmate has a lot to say about this train, either convince him subtly - without mentioning my name - or do it yourself." He turned towards me, his hand outstretched. "In return I won't reveal your secret. Yet." He smiled his classic evil smile. "Do we have a deal?"
I sighed in frustration, but nodded anyway.
"I need to shake your hand upon it, Livia, otherwise it's not a proper deal."
Rolling my eyes, I shook his hand. Before I could let go, Ambassador Montgomery pulled me towards him and put his other hand on our joined hands. His gross breath fanned my face, and he whispered in my ear. "Don't show this to anyone, it contains  confidential information, were you in need to do it yourself."
I shuddered, trying to shake off this dreadful feeling of having him so close to me. Only then I felt the small piece of paper being pushed into my hand.
"If you have any other problems dear, don't hesitate to tell me about it, I'm always available to help you." He said this a lot louder, knowing that everyone listening in on our conversation could hear this. By saying this, he played the role of sweet grandpa, happy to help a young new member of the pack. I decided to play along, while secretly trying to put the piece of paper in the back pocket of my jeans. "Thank you, Quinten," I said with a sickly sweet smile. "I don't know what I'd do without your guidance."
I wished I could kill him.

"What were you doing with the ambassador of the Iustitia Pack?" Betty asked me as soon as I entered the office again. I didn't even have the time to close the door behind me before she attacked me with the question. It appeared that Ambassador Montgomery was indeed right about the listening devices in the hallways. The walls here really had ears. And eyes probably, too.
"Oh nothing," I said confidently, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear. "He had some questions on Military Schools in the Fortis Pack. His granddaughter is thinking of becoming an Interpack Wolf to join Fortis." I shrugged, as if it was completely normal for him to ask me that. At the same time, my heart was beating so loudly I was sure she could hear my improvisation by just listening to that. Here's hoping that he actually had a granddaughter.
"Alright sweetie," Betty started typing again on her computer, seemingly satisfied with my answer. "Just be careful with that man, alright honey? My gut tells me not to trust him, or anyone from Iustitia."
I nodded, clearing my throat, eager to change the subject. "Of course. Do you need any help?"
Betty smiled. "Yes, thank you! Can you please order these files alphabetically?" She pointed at a stack of papers, her expression almost showing an apology. "I meant to do that a few weeks ago, but I never got to it."
"Sure!" I said it with a cheer, but in my mind I cursed her for not doing it earlier. This would take me the entire afternoon, maybe until evening.
It did.
The entire time, the piece of paper Ambassador Montgomery had given me was burning a hole in the back pocket of my skinny jeans.
