Maybe it would come with time. Maybe in time he would be able to predict her moves. He just wasn't looking forward to the period of not knowing what was going on in her head.
It didn't take long before we were led into the ballroom for the last event of the evening. As Daniel wasn't there to escort me, I quickly made my way through the large, acoustic hall, in order to get to the table with the food.
Along the way, I grabbed a glass of champagne from a waiter who offered it to me with a charming smile. I felt oddly classy, with my long purple gown, jewellery around my neck, my hair done fancily and with a glass of sparkling champagne in my hand. The only thing missing was a pair of silken gloves to cover my lower arms up until my elbows, and I would feel as one of those classy women in old movies.
When I reached the table, I grabbed some sweet pastries and stuffed them in my mouth, before observing the room. It was quite crowded – at least, there were more people than I expected there to be – but the giant hall was still largely unoccupied. As in the movies, there was a gigantic staircase at one end of the room. You know, one of those that start in the middle of the room, and then halfway, they split up into two curved stairways, one to the left, and one to the right, to meet each other again on a balcony.
On the left of the stairs, there was a small orchestra, consisting of violins, cello's, a piano and a harp. They played beautiful classical music, the tunes dancing softly into the air, providing a relaxing atmosphere.
The dancefloor – could you call it that? – was in the middle of the room, and it was very empty so far. Lingering near the large empty place in the room, people stood in small groups, softly chatting. The women looked extraordinarily beautiful, with long, dark blue, green or black gowns. Some women were looking bold in red. The men were wearing three-piece suits, a smoking or dresssuits.
I stood near the table, observing everything and everyone, trying to find a good hiding place, to avoid conversation and dancing for the rest of the evening.
Just when I thought I found the perfect place to hide – beside the curtains, allowing me to casually dive behind them if I sensed someone coming to me – Daniel stood in front of me quite suddenly.
"Where is my jacket," I demanded as soon as I saw that he no longer had it.
"I put it back in your room."
"In my room? As in, you opened the door and you put it inside my room? My room?" I said, my hands on my sides. I knew he was coming here to dance with me, as he promised in the lift earlier this evening, so my tactic was to scare him away with my questions and irritation.
"Yes." He answered bluntly.
"So? You don't think that is a breach of privacy? For all I know I went back because I wasn't feeling well, and I stood there naked when you would just barge in."
"I did knock before you know." He didn't even sound defensive. "And I am the beta of Sapientiae, I kind of have this privilege." He winked.
My mouth fell open at the suggestion. "Really."
He nodded and smiled cheekily. "I'll be a true gentleman from now on if you allow me this dance, milady, I promise." He stuck out his hand for me to take.
"But I don't really dance."
"Bullshit," he said. "If you are going to live in this pack, and have a high rank as well, you will need to learn how to dance. We have these kind of parties quite often."
"But there is no one there."
"As soon as we'll start dancing, more people will follow. I won't embarrass you, you'll look perfect when I lead, I promise."
"It's not that I can't dance, I just that I don't want to." As soon as these words came out of my mouth, Daniel just grabbed my hands and pulled me along with him. "Hey! Stop it!" I whisper-yelled as to not to attract too much attention from the people we were passing by. I tried struggling out of his strong grip, but even though I did train in the Fortis pack, his strength surpassed mine by far. Without any trouble, he managed to drag me to the dancefloor, where he put one hand on my waist, while still holding my hand with the other. Without any further ado, he started dancing with me. The Viennese waltz.
I swallowed uncomfortably. My dad's favourite.
"You okay? You are dancing quite well, so you have nothing to worry about." Daniel looked down at me worriedly.
I forced a smile on my face. "Yhea, I'm okay. I'm actually enjoying this more than I expected." That wasn't a lie. I truly did like it, even though it had been a long time since I last danced like this. Eight years, to be exact.
"As we don't really have anything else to do, how about I tell you what your future job will include? Alpha Vir has told me everything that I need to tell you about it."
I nodded in confirmation. "Yhea, go ahead." Daniel pulled me a bit closer to him as the music changes to a normal waltz. By then, more couples had joined us, and the dance floor was getting more crowded by the minute. Still, the Beta managed to waltz us between people very efficiently, never actually hitting someone in his path.
"Okay, well, the official name of your job position is junior personal assistant Alpha's office, which means basically that you are not the actual personal assistant, but have the prospect of becoming that when the current personal assistant retires. I've heard from the Alpha that you are not very proficient in reading, writing or planning, and your further academic skills are unknown, so for the first few months we will mainly be focussing on that. The Alpha has made up a story that he wants to assess your full potential first, which will allow you to work in his office some parts of the day. After a few months, you will probably start working as an actual junior personal assistant. By then, I hope for you it's known that you two are mates, so you won't have to worry that you'll never see him." Even after this long monologue, he wasn't even slightly out of breath.
"Okay." I said.
"Okay? That's all?" Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"I'm supposed to say more?"
He only chuckled as an answer, after which he stayed quiet for a bit. "I think you will be good for him," he said after a while. "You might be able to help him."
Our dance ended before I had the chance to ask him why.
