Chapter Twenty-Nine | Sane

I help my father up from the floor, the noise from the Insane trying to knock down the door never stopping. I put up a ton of chairs and racks of clothes against the main door into the mall, not being able to lock it. I find a comfy t-shirt and leggings before finding a corner in a shop to sleep in. I lay out a sleeping bag and bring one to Walker, who won't leave Malik's side.

"He'll be okay." I try to smile.

I nod at my dad that I'm going to go sleep somewhere where I don't have to hear the Insane. I didn't want to interrupt Forrest and Mayzlie, so I just made my way to the back of a shop, and laid down.

If I would've jumped off the bridge after Oakley's death, there would've never been a cure.

We're all a bunch of broken kids, coming from a broken past. But we have decided our past wasn't going to define us. We now have a clean slate for the future.

I sigh, getting lost in my many thoughts. I close my eyes, trying to fall asleep after everything that's happened. Before I do, I feel rustling beside me, and an arm lay around me, pulling me close.

"Just because I have a sister now, doesn't mean I'm going to let you go." Forrest's voice whispers before I fall asleep.

I pace around Malik nervously. Walker stayed up all night, and she looks like a zombie. She begins biting her already-bit fingernails, and she's starting to worry me.

"Why don't you go get some sleep?" I ask, helping her stand up.

She shakes her head, but I practically drag her over to her sleeping bag, and she unwillingly falls asleep.

Malik looks like he's in a deep sleep, so obviously not Insane anymore, but it's questionable if he's sane. Mayzlie walks up next to me, and smiles.

"I'm sorry about your friend." She says shyly.

"He'll be okay." I respond immediately.

There's an awakrd silence before I talk again, "Where were you all this time?"

"Like when people starting going Insane?" She questions, and I nod.

"I was told someone wanted to foster me. I was so excited, thinking I could finally have a family, and to come to find out it was my real dad, who plans to destroy the whole earth. He locked me up in his fortress, and only to bring me out to trade me for you." She says, rolling her eyes.

"But, you know, after all that, I'm happy that it brought me to my brother." She shrugs, and I bite my lip. So many people view the world and how it works differently.

She strolls away, and I begin to wish that I was as happy as she was. Forrest wraps his arms around me from behind, teasing me.

"Your half sister is an interesting girl." I tell him and he nods.

We both jump in surprise when Malik shoots upright, gasping.

"Walker?"

He's Sane.
