A Second Visit
Ryan rushed around the school house looking for a window to exit out. He didn't want to be spotted by the crowd, but he also knew he had to leave by tonight if he wanted to save Jacob. It wasn't his fault he was a wraith, if anyone had anwsers it was going to be the Prophet. Pakki said he knew everything, and right now that's just the kind a thing they needed, an all knowing being.
Ryan slowly crawled out the window. He swung his eyes around the area, making sure no-one was around. He crept along the edge of the building until he spotted the crowd. He watched the people gather near the door. Banging and yelling could still be heard but it was starting to die down. He made his way, circling the edge of the village until he made it to Aunt Tabitha's house. He snaked his way around the square structure until he made it to Emmeny's room. Slowly he peeked over towards the shutters, quietly knocking on the bundled wood. Ryan heard the girl scream before peeking through the shutters. Her blue eyes peeked just beyond the wood. Leaving only a sliver of her face visible.
"Ryan? What are you doing here?" Emmeny inquired.
"I need your help to save Jacob. We gotta go talk to Pakki, and talk with the Prophet."
"Alright!" Emmeny shouted, jumping in the air. "We gotta get Bek too!"
"No! We gotta keep this a secret between me and you. I don't want to get in trouble again."
"Okay." Emmeny pouted.
"Meet me at the boarder. I'll go grab my knife and bow." Ryan rushed off, dashing into the distance. He had to be quick, he only had until the morning. He swung around towards the stable, grabbing a beast of burden. He took a giant lizard with it's front shoulders standing about 40 inches high, and the hind legs about 30. It was nearly 10 feet long from snout to tails end. They grew to be bigger, but Ryan need one smaller for his own size. The lizard species was called the Black Scaled Gecko. Ryan had on occasion gone to the stable to visit the lizard, Monty. The scales were prodomenitly Grey, except for the white on its belly. They were omnivors, but often preffered meat.
He slowly climbed atop Monty's back, riding him around the outskirts of the village and to the boarder where Emmeny waited. He road up to the girl waiving his hand. He was not a bad rider, in fact he was a natural. He had only driven lizards once or twice before, but he had enough experience to recall certain methods of movement. At first Emmeny was scared of the beast, until she spotted Ryan.
"What are you doing! That's not your lizard! I thought you didn't want to get in trouble!" Emmeny exclaimed.
"We don't have enough time to get there and back without Monty." Ryan explained, "Besides its borrowing. Me and Monty are good friends."
Ryan gave the lizard a few pats on its neck as he turned back to Emmeny. She had a horrid look on her face, as if someone sneezed in her meal.
"I'm not climbing on that thing. It looks slimy, and scary." Emmeny pointed out.
"Stop, don't point at Monty, and be nice, he has feelings too. Now hurry up and get on."
"But what if I fall?" Emmeny asked.
"You won't fall, I promise. I'll make sure to hold you tight." Ryan placed his hands on his hips with a confident smile to accompany his words. Emmeny inched her way forward and Ryan helped her up. She sat in front as Ryan wrapped his arms around her to the reigns. Within a moment, they were off. Ryan directed the lizard through the desert canyon towards Wakoa. After two hours, they had made it to the tribe. A warrior stood watch atop the wooden walls of Wakoa. Ryan slid off the lizard as he started yelling for Pakki. After ten minutes Pakki came out, accompanied by the Wahku.
"Child, why have you come here in the dead of night?" Pakki asked.
"I need to speak to the Prophet! It's urgent, my big brother's going to die!"
Pakki looked back to the Wahku, as the older gentleman nodded his head. He said a few other words that sounded like garble to the children, then Pakki turned back. "Very well, the Wahku has permitted you speak with our god. Follow me."
Ryan quickly lept off Monty, helping Emmeny down as well. The tribial soldiers guided the lizard as another set followed behind the children. The Wahku followed behind the soldiers and stopped a good distance off as Pakki, Ryan, and Emmeny neared the same Rock as before.
The rock was off center from the bone well constructions. Giant rib cages lined the walls and were weaved to make floors for gaurd post. The huts were made of mud, stone, and animal hides. Stitches could be found over the dome shaped huts. In truth, Ryan was wondering what Pakki's tribe was hunting. He didn't know if anything this massive. However he wasn't there to analyze their structures, he was there for the Prophet.
Ryan stepped closer placing his hand on the stone. He realized the coat of dirt, mixed with rust and soot laid over the rectangular object. He could feel the titanium metal beneath. The boy glanced back to Emmeny as the hologram was once again projected with the same bald man.
"Good evening, commanding officer, Emmeny Key. How may I assist you?"
"Ryan he's asking me questions now." Emmeny whispered.
"Good evening Mr. Rykker." The hologram replied without turning back.
Pakki stood off to the side observing the situation. He was intrigued by this.
"I need to know. How do we cure a wraith?" Ryan asked.
"A wraith is a folk creature, there is no cure. Quary, do you otherwise mean, waning recognition, aggressive, impulsive thought, hypothesis, or W.R.A.I.T.H., wraith?"
"I don't even know what all of that means." Ryan said aloud in a reply. His eyes ogled onward in awe.
"The W.R.A.I.T.H. is a hypothesis or otherwise unproven idea, that those with the xenobots inside the blood stream have corrupt data, and therefore have corrupted the user's DNA, genetics, or brain tissue. If correct, symptoms would include a loss of memory, loss of cohesion in one's personality or memories, and perhaps failure to recognize others. The xenobots would attempt to repair their damaged nanites, however this would lead to sporadic episodes, much like a seizure. Death is hypothetically painful, as the virus potentially evolves to kill the host."
"Okay..." Ryan paused, "So, how do we cure it?"
"Surgical removal of damaged brain cells and, or medicinal means. This depends on both the hypothesis having merit, and the severity of the symptoms. If the virus has corrupted other organs beyond its hypothetical priority, the brain, than there is nothing to be done."
"Wraiths are real. Jacob just killed somebody!" Ryan replied exasperated. His hands waved in the air as Pakki took note of his actions and words. The Wahku glared into the back of the boy. This could mean trouble for their tribe, and both Novis knew it.
"Jacob, no malfunction in data base with any name Jacob, first or last. Conclusion, subject is not a W.R.A.I.T.H. if hypothesis stands to be correct."
"I need to cure him!" Ryan shouted. "How can I cure him?"
"You lack the capabilities. Neural uplink suggested. Permission, Emmeny Key, required."
"Whatever it takes! I want to save Jacob!" Ryan shouted.
"Do it H.I.C.S." Emmeny yelled, "We have to save Jacob."
"Command received, neural uplink established. Please place your eye at the scanner."
Ryan looked back at Emmeny, then back at the hologram. "Where is this scanner?"
Emmeny pointed at the light source. "It's where the hologram is coming from."
Pakki's eyes glanced over to Emmeny. "You know..." his words whispered in his native tongue, not alerting the young girl.
Ryan came close to the rock, placing his eye into the light source. The blue light scanned back and forth, then suddenly a needle thin metal object punctured his eye. The needle quickly retracted into the scanner before Ryan could even pull back and recoil in pain. The young boy held his eye as numbers began to appear all around him. Measurements appeared on the ground, people appeared through walls, and information and unknown letters appeared to describe everything he saw. The boy began to breath heavily, nearing hyperventilating.
"Ryan. Calm down, this is H.I.C.S. only you can hear me, the information is being fed directly to your neural network. There is nothing to be afraid of."
"What?" Ryan yelled back, "What is all this?"
"This is mathematics, measurements, and displays function in your hud. I recommend a beginner's setting to avoid from being overwhelmed."
"Sounds good." Ryan replied. Emmeny rushed forward grabbing Ryan's arm. "Ryan, are you okay? Who are you talking to?"
"You do not need to speak aloud to contact me. I can interpret your brain waives, with 97.99% accuracy."
"Nobody I guess." Ryan replied looking around himself. Most all of the symbols and numbers were gone now. Ryan glanced over to the Wahku who was speaking to Pakki in their native tounge."
"Should I translate Mr. Rykker?" HICS asked.
"Yeah, I hate being left in the dark." Ryan stopped, looking over to Emmeny. He didn't even whisper a word, yet the audio came in clear from the two Novis.
"We must kill them Pakki. The girl has control over the Prophet, and she is an erus-sapien! If what has been said is true, she could wipe out our tribe in seconds!"
"No Bayh, they are children. We have to wait until they are older."
"Sacrafices must be made Pakki. They took the last of that serum. It has killed others we have given it to. We have no means to counter erus-sapiens now. I will not let them leave here alive. I cannot. Our tribe depends on it."
Ryan looked over to Emmeny, "They're planning on killing us. We have to leave! Now!"
"What!" Emmeny whispered back in shock. "But Pakki's our friend!"
"We can use them, how else are we going to recieve the technology of the ancients? I want to go back to Therra. We can direct them there, our people may even except us back." Pakki shouted back.
Emmeny's eyes went wide as Ryan grabbed her hand and began to dash off. Tears welled in Ryan's eyes. The water dripped down his cheeks and off his chin as he ran. Both Novis were caught off guard, at the sudden move from the children, but the Wahku acted quickly. He leaned forward trying to grab Ryan's shirt. His fingers slid against the soft tanned hide. Narrowly missing his mark, the Wahku stumbled.
"Don't let them escape!" The Wahku ordered, "Pakki, clean up your mess! Kill the girl first."
Pakki looked over to the children as they ran. He drew his knife from its sheeth. Ryan stumbled and fell as he looked back at his old friend and brought Emmeny along with him.. Pakki's eyes were lifeless, and then a smile crossed the alien's face. Pakki turned back and sliced open the Wahku's throat. The green blood oozed out of Bayh's neck. Pakki turned back to the children, "You better run wile you still can!"
Ryan nodded, as he and Emmeny rushed forward. The image of Pakki killing his Wahku was stuck in Ryan's mind. It played over and over again in his head. Ryan wasn't certain were to go, but he just kept running. The children were quickly becoming surrounded, as a spear was launched towards Ryan. The spear glanced his collar bone, taking some flesh along with it. The projectile nearly took his head. Ryan fell to the ground, only feet away from the exit.
Emmeny crouched down next to Ryan, looking at his crying face. He grabbed his collar bone, trying to stop the bleeding, and nurse his wound. "Ryan! Ryan are you okay!?"
Emmeny stared up at the man, feary burning in her eyes. She yelled in rage and anger as suddenly the Novis burst into flames. She wanted him to burn. The spontaneous combustion didn't go unnoticed by the other warriors, they glanced back at the girl in shock before another one lit up in flames.
"LEAVE US ALONE!" Emmeny shouted.
The warriors began running away as two of their fallen comrads continued to burn. Pakki stood off in the distance starring wide eyed at this event. He didn't know that erus sapiens were so powerful. They're tribe had stories of such power, a group of people who were gods. A people who could destroy hundreds in seconds. Erus sapiens were far more than the legends told. They didn't require much more than an angry thought to twist a Novis in two.
Emmeny placed both her hands on Ryan's back, "Ryan! Ryan, you have to get up!"
Ryan nodded, slowly crawling to his knees, and then to his feet, slightly freaking out everytine he saw his own blood. "Where's Monty? We can't leave without him."
Emmeny pointed over towards were the lizard was hitched. "He's not far! Right over there."
Ryan nodded, rushing over to the lizard. He motioned his arm up, but winced in pain. Ryan looked back as Emmeny caught up, he had always been a faster runner. A group of seventeen warriors watched from the distance along side Pakki, they were just watching them.
"Ryan, do you need help?" Emmeny asked.
"No, I can do it." Right said. He let his pride get the better of him as he fought through the pain to climb up the lizard, everytime he got close to giving up, he remembered be didn't want to be beaten by a girl, or most of all look weak. After all, he was supposed to protect her.
Emmeny waited for Ryan before leaping up on to their mount. Monty stuck his tounge out, before following the command to leave.
After the children had gone far enough to leave the tribe's site, Ryan pulled Monty aside. He glanced over to the confused Emmeny, as she began to stir with question. "Why did we stop?" Emmeny asked.
"Akoma taught me a trick. And I can't do it while I'm driving. Would you mind helping me?" Ryan asked, pulling his knife out.
"Sure, what are we doing?" Emmeny asked, sliding down off the lizard.
Ryan handed Emmeny his knife."I need you to cut and tie some hide over my wound."
Emmeny nodded, uncertain with the knife in her hand. She waited as Ryan pulled some cloth from his pocket. The young boy slowly took his shirt off as Emmeny began to inspect his wound.
A cut had been made on his right collar. She looked at him as she could see him clenching his jaw. She slowly wrapped the clothe around his shoulder as the young boy directed. When she was finished she cut off the remaining cloth and gave it back to him.
Ryan took both the knife and cloth. Akoma had always taught him to cover his wounds. He was glad he had paid attention. The boy was always surprised how much he knew of what Akoma had taught him.
"How did you do that." Ryan questioned.
"Do what? I just followed your." Emmeny's response was cut short.
"No, you set those people on fire! How did you do that!"
Emmeny took a step back, her hands close to her body. Ryan was concerned with her movement, but obviously not angry. "Emmy, are you okay?"
Emmeny began crying as she fell to the ground. The weight of her actions pressing against her. "I-I, I killed those people."
"Emmeny, you saved our lives! Akoma always taught me that there are bad people. People who want to hurt us. Sometimes, even if we don't like to, we have to hurt them, so they won't hurt us."
"They're dead" emmeny bawled. Her voice grew weaker, "I shouldn't have..."
"Emmeny they wanted to kill us. Me, you, our whole village!" Ryan exclaimed.
"But Pakki's our friend..."
Ryan gritted his teeth and shook his head, "No! Pakki is not our friend! He just wants to use us! That's why he let us go. He doesn't care about us!"
Emmeny began crying louder, Ryan's Shouting making it worse. Defeated, Ryan sighed and sat next to Emmeny. He wrapped his arms around the crying girl. "You're my friend though."
Slowly, the bawling turned to sniffling. As the two children sat crouched together in a rocky, desert wasteland. A brief moment passed before Emmeny started to speak.
"I, I miss Earth." Emmeny started, "I miss my parents. I wish there was air conditioning."
"What are you talking about?" Ryan asked, slightly pulling away.
Emmeny leaned back to explain. "I'm not from here. I'm from Earth. An entirely different planet. Me and my parents left Earth to come here, they said that we were going to have a new home."
"Wait, so you're an alien?" Ryan asked, "How'd you get here?"
"No, I'm a human. We got here on a space ship, or raumschiff that's how I knew what those rettungskapsel were." Emmeny replied.
"Well maybe we can go back, to your space ship! Maybe you can go back to Earth." Ryan stated.
"Sir, that's highly unlikely." HICS stated, "After the crash of the colony ship SE-C2, her stasis went on life support. There is no power left for inter galactic travel."
Emmeny sighed, "No, I wasn't really awake when Akoma found me. I don't remember the way back."
"What's stasis?" Ryan asked.
"Oh," Emmeny shrugged, "It's like going to sleep. They said it would take alot of years to get here, so they put us to sleep." Emmeny answered.
"Sir, if you are asking me, stasis is a state of inactivity, in this case it is human induced hibernation." HICS answered.
Ryan clenched his fist and waved in the air, "shut up mister know it all!"
Emmeny looked shocked as she reeled back. Ryan looked over waving his hands, "No no, no, not you. That stupid Prophet is in my head now."
"HICS." Emmeny replied, "It's a computer not a god."
"A computer?"
"Yeah... I'm not sure how to explain what a computer is." Emmeny said, letting the words trail off.
"Oh... well can you tell me more about Earth?"
Emmeny smiled and nodded. "Earth is very different than here. There's more water, bigger buildings, and the technology is way better."
"Technology, like what?"
Emmeny pointed at Ryan's eye, "Almost everyone had an optic. That's what people called them, but my parents were making me wait until I was ten."
"So where did you live?" Ryan asked, "Like on Earth. Did you have a village like Dark Water?"
"I'm from a country, the Deutschland, my native language is Deutsch, but I learned some Englisch. I lived on an estate, just a couple of miles away from the city. Things were useally pretty safe."
"Wow." Ryan said in awe. "What's an estate?"
"It's a giant home, with lots of land, but it's only for one person." Emmeny replied. "Daddy used to take me outside to fish in our coy pond. I never liked it much though."
"Can all people from Deutschland do what you do?"
Emmeny was confused, "What do you mean?
"Can people from your country just control knives and catch people on fire and stuff."
"No..." Emmeny trailed off. "That's why we had to leave. My family was rich, but xenobots could only be bought by rich people. So the poor people got angry. At first it was just against medical people like doctors, but eventually they shifted the blame to us, me and my family, and other rich people like us. Our neighbors, the Newtons, they were targeted too."
"Xenobots... what is it?" Ryan asked.
"I don't really know." Emmeny replied, "All I know is that they allow me to move objects, or catch things on fire. It's how I do the things I do. My parents were supposed to tell me more after we arrived here. But they're dead now."
"Well, maybe you can tell me another time, once we've figured it out. Besides we still need to help Jacob." Ryan replied, mounting Monty.
"Yeah. Alright." Emmeny replied, crawling abord the lizard.
