Chapter 8
Astrid's P.O.V.
"Well. I believe this is you?" Toothpick said as we came to the gate of my house. The rain had stopped a while ago and he offered to walk me home.
"Yup," I sigh, looking at the light that shone on the house. I could tell it was empty, even if I couldn't see inside the garage. "This is my house, as large as it is empty."
"Isn't your brother home?" Toothpick asked.
"Nope. See the front door?" I ask, nodding to the house, "If he was home, it would be open and he'd be making out with some random girl who's name he doesn't even know."
"What about your mom?" he asks.
"Can't be. See how clear the area around the hot tub is? If she were home, there would be wine bottles scattered around it and she's be skinny dipping with a stranger," I tell him, "I expect she's either working on a trial, or at a bar to celebrate her last one."
"You're the only one who doesn't make out with someone you don't know, huh?" he guesses. I paused and he froze. I made out with him...twice. And I didn't know him that well. I grabbed my arms with a sigh, turning my head away.
"People tend to take after their family after spending half a life time in their company..." I say quietly. "Well, I guess I'll...see you tomorrow...Toothpick," I say as I back up to the gate.
"Yeah, I um...I'll see ya...Astrid," he said before stepping forward and gently kissing my cheek. He then walked down the street with his hands in his pockets. I thought about calling and inviting him inside to warm up, but figured he'd say no because he had to get home soon...due to his rules.
I sighed before pushing the gate open and closing it behind me. I looked around the yard before strolling up the walk way to the front door. I walk inside and grab the remote from a table near the door. I press the light button and look around the foyer before pressing another button to have my ears blasted by music. No one really knows I had this installed, they just used the radio and light switches. Teenage Dream started playing as I made my way to the living room. I laid on the couch with a sigh before clicking a button, changing the song until I got to Ol Red. I suddenly started to think about how mine and Toothpick's voices merged. He was good. Wonder if he's ever done Karaoke...
Hiccup's P.O.V.
I walked through the door right as the 6:00 siren went off. "Cutting it close," my dad said from the dinning room, looking at his watch, "Better watch it."
"Sorry, had to do something," I say, sitting next to him and taking a bite of steak.
"Was it your homework?" he asks.
"Got it done in class," I say.
"What did you have to do?" he asked. I looked at him.
"Does it mater? I was home by six," I say.
"Okay," he says, strangely calm.
"Are you alright?" I ask him.
"I'm fine, son," he says. I paused. He hasn't called me son since...since Mom left.
"Did something happen with Mom?" I ask.
"I don't want to get your hopes up," he says.
"What happened?" I ask and he pauses.
"She's thinking about coming back to us," he says.
Next day...
After school
Astrid's P.O.V.
I walked into the school and sat at my table before Toothpick danced through the doors. "Astrid!" he greeted as he walked toward my table. He grabbed my head and pressed his lips to mine, shocking me out of my boots. "You are looking lovely as ever," he commented as he broke the kiss.
"Whoa," Ruffnut breathed before he turned to her with a smile.
"Ah, Ruffnut, it is always a pleasure to see one of my best friends' sister," he said happily before kissing her as well. "Snotlout! Oh, get over here, you beautiful cousin of mine," he shouted as said person walked by. He then snapped his arm around Snotlout's neck to put him in a headlock before giving him a noogie.
"Guys! He's turned gay!" Snotlout cried, making Toothpick laugh.
"Snotlout, you always were a joker," he laughed as Tuffnut, Fishlegs, Eret, Dagger, and Heather joined us. "Heather, you own one of the most magnificent pairs of eyes I have ever seen. Eret, if you don't deserve to be captain of the football team, I don't know who does. Dagger, remind me to call you if I need to get out of a bind, because you're loyal to those who trust you. Fishlegs, you should go for the math bee. Tuffnut. Today, after school, we are going to the cafe, and we are going to catch up on old times!"
"Uh...Toothpick, are you okay?" I ask as everyone falls silent.
"I'm more than okay, Astrid," he says, his voice slightly calmer, "I am to the moon and back."
"Why?" Eret asked slowly.
"I'm about to see someone I haven't seen since I was a young 'un," he said.
"Oh, yeah. Stoick told me Valka might be coming back," Snotlout said.
"And she texted me this morning, she, is, comin' back!" Toothpick cheered.
"That's great!" I said happily before my group looked at me in confusion. "It's his mother," I tell them, deciding it wasn't my place to tell them more.
"Oh, good for you," Eret said awkwardly, moving closer to me. "Why do we care?" he whispered in my ear.
"Um...oh, yeah! Because he's a classmate. And a pretty nice one at that. He would care if this was happening to you," I say, pretending to think.
"Would he?" Heather asks.
"Yes he would," I snap.
"Sounds to me it was just an excuse to kiss you and Ruffnut," Dagger says.
"Wow, guys, I have never been more ashamed to have you lot as my friend group," I say before leaving the table.
"I hate it when she's on her week, she's so irrational," Eret sighs. Wow, my friends were jerks. How has it taken me so long to realize this stuff?! I stormed to the library and started looking through the shelves of books. I heard the door open and close as I pulled a book down and read the book jacket.
"Psst! Astrid!" a voice hissed and I looked around before peeking between two shelves to see Toothpick in the other aisle.
"You're talking in the library!" I gasp teasingly.
"I know, and it's a rush I'm not fond of," he says, looking over his shoulder, "I need to talk to you, can you meet me at the bleachers?"
"Um...sure," I say uncertainly.
"Okay good, please hurry!" he said quickly before shooting toward the door. I looked after him in confusion before taking the book to rent it. I then put it in my bag before going behind the school to the bleachers of the track.
"What's up, Toothpick?" I ask as he meets me half way.
"I don't want to meet my mom..."
