Chapter 10
Astrid's P.O.V.
"Who do you live with, Ms. Hofferson?" Officer Crain asked.
"My mother, and brother," I answer.
"And where are they now, do you know?" Myle asks.
"I think they're at work," I lie.
"You don't have a job?" Myle questions.
"Just school," I say.
"You say your name was on the envelope?" Crain asks.
"Yes," I say.
"Was it hand written, or typed, or--?"
"It was typed," I say.
"Can we have a look at it?" Myle asks.
"Um, yeah, I'll be right back," I say before running back upstairs.
Hiccup's P.O.V.
I walked down the street before pausing as I saw Astrid's gate opened and her friends in the pool with a police car parked in front of the mansion. I cautiously walked forward before jogging up to the front door as the guys in the pool saw me, yelling, "Toothpick!" I got to the door and went inside to be met by two police officers, looking at me in confusion as they waited in the foyer.
"May I ask what's going on?" I ask.
"You are--?" the black haired man asks.
"Hiccup Haddock, I'm a classmate of Astrid's," I say.
"We received a call," he says.
"About what? Is everything okay?" I ask before Astrid came jogging down the stairs.
"Toothpick, what are you doing here?" she asked as she handed the red haired man an envelope.
"I wanted to talk to you about something," I say.
"Sir, we'd like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind," the black haired guy says.
"I don't see what that's going to do, but I don't see the harm," I say.
"Please step over here," he says and I follow him to the other side of the stairs.
Timeskip
The cops had taken everyone's finger prints, and said they would compare them to the ones on the letter, noting that Astrid and Officer Myle were the only ones to touch it. "Astrid, how could you piss someone off so much to get a threat like that?" Eret asked as we all left the house.
"Easy, I don't like their attitude so I kick them out," she answers smoothly.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he chuckled.
"Why don't I show you?" she asked seductively, slowly moving closer to him. She then suddenly punch him in the gut, kneed him in the spot, flipped him over her knee, karate-chopped his back, and threw him over her shoulder and into the pool. "Who else is wondering how I do stuff?" she asked sweetly, turning to face everyone else. They all took a step back, leaving me in the spot light, as Eret climbed out of the water. "Good. Now why don't all you murderers get off my property!" she snaps and they all run for the truck. I paused as they trampled each other, Astrid flopping down on the stone railing of the landing on the stairs.
"Uh...Astrid?" I said hesitantly.
"What?" she asks, her voice tense.
"Um..so, uh, uh, a threat," I said nervously.
"Toothpick, do you have something against me?" she asks, her voice shaking.
"No, you think I'm the one that left the note?!" I ask.
"I'm sorry! I-I just...I don't know who to trust right now! My friends are jerks who might do something like this just to freak me out; I gave you a nick name that you don't like; I keep rejecting Snotlout; my mom thinks I'm responsible for my dad's death; my brother thinks I'm useless! I can think of a motive for every person in school!" she sobbed, pushing her face into her hands as she propped her elbows on her knees. I sat on the angled railing, and bent my knees before resting my elbows on them as I faced her.
"...Toothpick is kinda growing on me," I tell her after a pause, making her look at me with tear stained eyes. I smiled softly. "You must be really comfortable around me, you keep crying," I joke gently. She cracked a saddened smile.
"I'm scared," she whispered. My eyebrows furrowed as a thought came to mind.
"Follow me," I say and stand up from the railing.
"Where are we going?" she asks cautiously.
"The Dog Pack," I answer extending my hand to her.
"Why? That's a pound," she says.
"We are going to get you a watch dog," I tell her.
"I don't have money at the moment," she says.
"It's on me. Or, more my dad," I say.
"Nooo, no, no, no, no, no, no, no," she says, shaking her head.
"What?! Why not?" I ask in shock, dropping my hand.
"That is your father's money! Do not spend it on a dog that won't even be in your possession," she orders. I sigh.
"Astrid, I don't want you feeling unsafe in your own home," I tell her.
"Don't you mean slut? That note could have been from a bunch of guys, I've slept with in the past and broke it off with, joining forces to ensure my downfall..." she trailed off, staring into space.
"All you need is a good guard dog," I tell her, crouching to her eye level, "If you don't want to keep it forever, we can leas it until they catch who ever's after you." She looked at me skeptically.
"How do I know you aren't just trying to earn my trust?" she asks.
"Yeah...I guess you can't really tell who you can trust, can you?" I say, nodding slowly.
"I'm sorry, Toothpick, I want to trust you; I know you've done nothing to make me not, but-" I cut her off by tilting her chin up and kissing her lips. She went rigid for a moment before relaxing and kissing me back. We slowly stood before she wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled herself closer as I wrapped my own arm around her waist. We gently massaged each others lips for a moment before slowly pulling away to look each other in the eye. She gulped as she stared at me, her eyes confused and comforted at the same time.
"I promise I will do everything in my power to protect you," I tell her softly, "All you have to do, is decide whether to believe me or not."
