Chapter 14: Cutting Ties
A/N: So I did a few edits especially in the end hope you still reread it even if you already saw it.
Ruby woke up with a heavy heart. Tears instantly fell from the corners of her eyes when she saw the peaceful sleeping face of Guinevere who cuddled close to her. She whispered thousands of apologies to the sleeping maiden as she caressed her hair. Ruby soon decided to leave the bed and freshen up. After grooming herself she immediately went downstairs to prepare breakfast and maybe even collect a few berries from the forest.
Ruby decided to make a few waffles, toasts, bacon, and eggs while humming a soft tune from a song she heard before from a cartoon. She stirred the waffle mix and poured the substance into the waffle maker, swaying a little as she does so.
"Bacon pancakes making bacon pancakes. Bacon pancakes that's what I'm gonna make. Take some bacon and you put it in a pancake. Bacoooon pancakes." she sang.
"Meoooow meow meow."(Translation: Mom you're making waffles not pancakes) Manticat argued. Ruby giggled at her familiar's antics.
"I know but the song is really catchy plus waffles are basically pancakes they just have square dents. Do you want maple syrup on your waffles or honey?" she asked while transferring a few waffles on a new plate and placing it down in front of the cat monster.
"Meow meow meow meow meow. Mreeew mreew mew." (Translation: Maple syrup will be fine. But add a few berries as well tho.)
"I don't think I have any more berries." Ruby informed as she wiped her hand with a white cloth. The toaster pinged and lifted the two slices of bread it has been heating. Ruby took the bread and immediately placed it on a plate with eggs and bacon, covering it for Guinevere.
"Caaaw, caaaw." Her attention was suddenly diverted to the white bird that landed on her open window. It was looking at her with a keen eye as if trying to tell her something. The bird was also a rare thing, not that its species was uncommon but its color is wrong for its kind. The bird was a white raven which alarmed her more than a black one and one look made her aware who it's owner was.
She heard Manticat hissing threateningly to the crow while pointing his spoon dangerously to the bird as if challenging him to do anything against his master or his waffles.
"I appreciate your concern but can you please put away the spoon. You might gut someone with that thing." Ruby joked before turning back to the bird.
"Caaaw!" it squawked.
"I understand."
"Meow meow meow meow meow meow!" (Translation: Why are you entertaining him? I swear he's evil. He wants to steal my waffles I can see the greed in his eyes and if I find my waffles gone, your cheesecake will be jeopardized!)
"Sure, I'll protect your waffles. Just eat your waffles and take a nap or whatever. I'm just going to deal with something."
"Meoow meow meeeeooow." (Translation: I'm going to Dyrroth's room. Do whatever you want, mom. At least my brother understands what a controlling evil woman you are.) Manticat said before flying away with his waffles towards the demon's room.
"Okay. I swear my cat is insane. He thinks that the demon I summoned is his little brother because I conjured him first and that I'm their mommy." Ruby babbled to the crow.
"Caaaww!" it answered back.
"I think I look crazy. I'm talking to a bird and I can understand a cat monster. Fine, Uncle Varri I'm coming." Ruby put on her shoes and followed the bird as he flew to the forest.
The crow went off the track so she had to trail her way on the uneven and jagged ground. The bird led her deeper into the forest where the trees are thicker and the foliage is bigger allowing almost no light to pass at all to light her way. Several times she lost sight of the bird so she just paused and waited for Varri to find her, which he always does and brought her further and further into the unknown. The forest soon lost the sound of the chirping birds besides Varri's occasional squawks indicating that this part of the forest is dangerous and most likely inhibited by vicious predators. One time Ruby paused to catch her breath and immediately noticed a large black wolf staring at her hungrily. It was bigger than a normal wolf and much more mean looking so she instantly figured that it must be a beowolf, a sentient wolf monster with the tenacity that far exceeds a demon. The beowolf seems to be smart and aware of which fights to pick as it bowed its head and turned away.
Finally, Varri stopped and perched himself on top of a tree when Ruby reached a clearing in the woods. The clearing was filled with colorful blooming flowers all lavender in color while the horizon stretched into small hills. The setting was so serene and the atmosphere was very calming while the sunlight is still gentle and warm. She went over to a fallen log where a tall enchanting woman sat drinking tea from a nice purple butterfly styled cup. The woman wore a black dress with a long overlay decorated with golden accents combined with a few bright pink fabrics. She wore a blindfold as well as a pointy hat giving away that's she's a witch.
"It's been a long time Aunt Pharsa." Ruby greeted taking a seat beside the woman.
"It has been, dear child." The woman replied in a gentle tone. A steaming teacup similar to the older witch's suddenly appeared floating in front of the maiden.
"What is the purpose of your visit? You should have come to my cottage, I could've served you a nice tower of waffle." Ruby smiled as she grasped the handle of the teacup.
"I won't linger. I just need to warn you about the impending danger you are about to face." The older witch started. A melancholic look crossed the maiden's features at her words.
"Your past has come to haunt back your present. And maybe endanger your future." Pharsa continued taking a sip of her tea. There was silence from the silver-haired maiden as she contemplates the words of her predecessor. Previously repressed emotions started bubbling back up her chest and touching parts of her heart that had long been locked away, like reopening long-closed scars with a sharp cold blade.
"So he will return and come for me, huh? After such a long time, I still don't think that I can meet him eye to eye without wanting to kill him or kiss him. I wonder what he'll do when he sees me."
"You are facing more danger than just Rel. I've had a vision."
"A vision? What kind and what omen does it bring?" asked the younger witch.
"A bad one. Alice is returning and once she does she will bring death and destruction to everything. Of course, she will first take her anger out on you who have once destroyed her plans."
"This is quite unbelievable. I killed her! I watch her be decimated along with her army when I blasted them into oblivion. But if you saw it then it must be true. Do you know when and how?" Ruby asked worriedly.
"I believe the gods have been quite ungenerous with details but a disaster is surely coming and you must prepare for it. It isn't too far but you still have time and you still have hope. However, if you fail you might lose one of the most crucial moments of your life." Ruby scoffed at her last statement.
"Haven't I already lost the most crucial moments of my life hundreds of years ago? During my time with Rel? Or the moments I lost with my mother? During the war? Or the time I could've spent seeing the world like she wanted? Like I wanted." Ruby replied as tears started building up on the corners of her eyes.
"You cannot bring back time. You shouldn't mourn for the things you've lost, you should instead celebrate the things you still have and protect it."
"But I don't have anything else left but hate and rage. All I have are my mortal pleasures with no love and no family. And sooner or later I'm going to lose my friend." Ruby said in despondency.
"You and I are very much the same. Self-loathing, regret, and vengeance is a poison that kills you more than it does to your enemy. Don't make the same mistakes that I did. Don't let anger blind you, you are always better than yourself." A strong wind blew making the maiden squint to avoid getting dust and particles in her eyes. The petals of the flowers were lifted by the wind and carried across the sky making them rain down around the girl. Ruby looked back to where her companion was sitting but found her spot empty. The teacups they were drinking from also faded making her wonder if the events that just unfolded were actually true or just figments of her imagination. She took one last look at the scenery and was astounded to find red roses blooming among the purple flowers.
She found a single blue rose sat on her lap. A smile graced her lips. Roses have always been her favorite and it was the flower that omened her victory during the war. Maybe there's still hope.
Ruby slowly faded into purple butterflies and soon reformed in front of her doorstep. She released a sigh and went back inside her house. She reached the kitchen and started fixing her utensils until she heard a familiar voice scream from behind her.
"You traitorous bitch!!" she heard Guinevere scream before seeing the tip of a sword pass through her stomach. The blade was trusted deeper inside of her making her gasp in pain and shock. The blade was pulled out allowing blood to spill put from her guts and recolor her white dress into crimson. She soon collapsed on the floor her limbs giving away due to horror more than the pain. She tried looking up to her friend and asking her for forgiveness however she felt a hard smack on her cheek. Her face collided with the floor.
She tried pushing herself up Guinevere stepped on the back of her head crushing her face against the dirty floor. She kicked her to roll over as Ruby groan in pain and grief. She looked up and saw her friend's sorrowful red face filled with rage and anger.
"You lying traitorous bitch!! You took them away from me!! You took my child away from me!! You took Gusion away from me!! You betrayed me!! You are nothing but a slut who uses people for her own wicked agenda!! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!!" she yelled in rage before raising the Sword over her head and swinging it down to split the witch's head. Ruby was able to avoid being sliced in half by moving her head a fraction from the sword's trajectory and kicking Guinevere on her stomach making her stagger back against a bookshelf making some of the books fall.
Ruby mustered all her strength and willed herself to activate a healing spell to close the wound as she tried standing up. Her limbs are weak and are still unable to comply to her will making her unable to move any further.
Ruby spat out blood. She probably deserved that, all of it but she can't let herself die like this. She's closer than ever into attaining her goals and no one, not the gods or even Guinevere can thwart it.
It seems that even in her weakened state Ruby's kick still packed power because Guinevere took time to collect her bearings. She tried grabbing the sword but Ruby got to it first. She had one hand over her bleeding wound that barely closed with the half-decent healing magic she can procure after being severely injured.
Guinevere held her stomach where the witch's feet collided. She tried standing up but chains of Azrael wrapped around her limbs restraining her. Ruby went near her with a blank look as she looked down at the auburn-haired maiden with indifference. A hard slap connected with her cheeks making it sting with pain.
"I know you feel that I betrayed you and I accept your vengeance however to use my own mother's sword to harm me is just unforgivable." Ruby spat looking down at her with rage.
"You took everything from me!! You tricked me into believing that you're this kind and sweet girl instead of the poisonous snake crawling on the ground that you are!! I lost my child because of you!! And then you have the gal to be this all nice and warm to me when in truth you are Judas!!" the mage responded thrashing wildly against the chains, trying her best to escape and hurt the witch but all her efforts are in vain.
"I hate you! I fucking hate you! I wish I never slept with you! I wish I never begged the Lightborn to save you from the Blood Moon so that the monsters can rape and kill you! I wish I poisoned every food I brought for you in the hospital! I wished I had killed you the moment that I saw you! I wished you were never born so that I could never meet you filth!" Ruby sighed as she watched the tears falling from her eyes.
"If you have not met me and begged me for a love potion then you'll never really get a shot at Gusion. The only reason you were able to feel all those happiness with him is because I gave you a chance. I gave you a choice. If I hadn't you would never even know what his cock taste like because he never loved you."
"No! You're a lying bitch! He loved me he truly loved me and you and that Lesley bitch conspired to destroy our friendship for what? A fucking sword?"
"It seems that you've been lying too much that even you have deceived your own self." Ruby knelt to her level staring her straight in the eyes.
"You are too accustomed on getting everything that you wanted so when something you really desire is already owned by someone else you went to get it the easy way. Selling even your whole family estate as a bargain price." Ruby sighed her cold glare changing into a pitying expression.
"You tried to live in a glass house Guinevere only filled with the things that you like, the things that you want, and your fantasies however when someone shattered it, you ended up breaking as well. I told you there is always an end to everything. It is bound to happen sooner or later and I'm merely the catalyst."
"Shut up!! I don't want to listen to your silver tongue!! This is all your fault you deserve so burn in hell!!"
"Perhaps you're right. It's such a shame that our friendship has to end this way. But I won't let you ruin my plans. Don't worry. I still love you so I will be merciful." Ruby stood up and retrieved a pair of scissors from a box on the shelf. The sight made Guinevere trash around even more.
"Get that thing away from me! I'm going to kill you!! I'm going to destroy your life and leave nothing behind. You'll be miserable." she cursed glaring furiously at the witch.
"I'm not going to hurt you. So that you can live your life you need to forget everything. Forget about Gusion, forget about me, forget about your child, and forget about this place. It will be as you have said: as if we never met and this never happened. This will all be a cruel dream. You can restart anew." Ruby spoke softly with a more gentle and caring look. Guinevere couldn't do anything but look at her face as tears cascade down her cheeks. She wants to spat at the witch, yell insults at her, and curse her however her mouth doesn't seem to want to utter anything vile about the silver maiden so she just sat still and listened to her words.
"I'm sorry I cannot do more for you but I wish you the best. Truth be told, I want to be mad at you but I can't. You're just a victim of love. I was wondering if I never gave you a love potion could you have found someone else that will truly love you. Someone who deserves to have you because even though we're fighting I still admire you. You're a brave and kind-hearted woman. I never should have played with you from the start. I'm sorry." Ruby apologize with a melancholic look. She lifted the scissors in front of the mage before starting to cut invisible strings. The more she cut the more blank Guinevere's eyes become.
Ruby cried as she performed the action. Their memories flash by her head with every string she touched before having to destroy it. She erased her name from her life as well as all the events involving her since they met. She destroyed the memory of last night, of her moments with Gusion, and of all their sad and joyful memories while tears fall profusely from her eyes. She apologized with every string that she cut until only one semblance of her existence remained in her memory.
Ruby held the string of their first meeting when Guinevere marched to her house unannounced and had a tea party with her. Somehow this is the hardest string to cut because her will doesn't want it to be destroyed. She watched the event unfold in her head repeating their awkward yet fun first meeting. A smile made its way to her sorrowful face.
"Well, I just want to talk to you and get to know you better. I saw you fighting in the arena and I was really impressed by your skills. All those dashes and lifesteal it looked like you were merely waltzing with your enemies in an enchanting dance macabre. I also noticed that you are quite pretty however you don't seem to like showing your face so I came to see you. I quite fancy seeing beautiful blooming flowers like you." Guinevere answered with an embarrassed smile, blushing a little as she answered.
This line made her heart bounce with joy at the moment but now it only brings her sorrow as she has to destroy it. With shaking hands Ruby brought the scissors near the thread.
"I w-w-wish we could h-ha-ave ta-taken a dif-frent pa-th may-be we could still be f-f-friends. I really en-joyed y-your tea and t-the ti-me we spent to-get her..." she heard Guinevere stutter as she looked at the scissors. Ruby bit her lip in lamentation, drawing out blood. Her own body is weak from the blood loss and her hand is getting harder and harder to lift as her own head swirl with clouded vision and darkness.
"Yeah, I wish we could have." she weakly replied before snapping the last thread making the mage pass out.
This time Ruby didn't stop the tears from falling from her eyes. She released all her bottled up frustration and screamed all her sorrows away. She begged for forgiveness even though she knows that she doesn't deserve it. She released Guinevere from Azrael's chains before cradling her body on her arms.
Manticat soon descended from the stairs in his large Panter form ready to fight but when he saw his master's despondent state his ears lowered in pity and he went to comfort her by snuggling near her neck. He released purrs of reassurance but Ruby was too consumed by grief to listen. He activated a revitalize spell to heal his mistress before submissively laying his head on her lap while listening to her cry knowing that there is nothing he can do or say that will lessen or remove her grief.
Ruby soon stopped her crying, she picked herself up and took a parchment and quill before scribbling something on the sheet.
Lancelot,
I am not aware if Guinevere has already told you but Gusion had left her and eloped with Lesley. She is grief-stricken at the moment so she begged me to use a memory erasure spell to cast away her sorrow and I did. I erased her memories of Gusion and I might have erased a few of her other memories as well. Please take care of her. I know you are in grief as well but your sister needs you. I would have attended to her however I myself am currently experiencing some issues regarding the monsters here in the forest and I'm afraid that I won't be able to keep her safe when beowolves always prowl in my property. Take care and I wish you the best.
-Ruby Orchid Butterfly
She signed before rolling up the sheet and sealing it with a purple butterfly stamp. She went upstairs to get a change of clothes for her former friend before cleaning her body and dressing her up.
"Lucius, I need you to do a task for me." Ruby said turning to the cat monster who released a soft confused growl.
"I need you to take Guinevere back to her brother in Rubenberg, in Rafaela's hospital, and give him this letter. I'm too weak to be able to do it myself. The damage from Excalibur is lethal even for its owner especially since it's a dragon-slaying sword. I will have difficulty healing from it but I will manage. In the meantime, can you do what I order?" she asked limping towards a chair. The cat monster only nodded and went to rub his face on her leg in affection.
"Very good but you need to change your form into something more humanoid so that they don't shoot you down the moment they see you. It will be a temporary magic but it will suffice until you reach Rubenberg and accomplish your task. For once you won't be meowing at people." she released a tired laugh before caressing the head of her familiar.
"Meow meow meow." (Translation: I don't want to make you upset. I will look like him.) he reasoned with worry.
"I know but this is more important than my feelings. She was my friend, one of the greatest that I have ever had. This is the least that I can do for everything she's done for me." Ruby replied with a melancholic smile. She lifted her finger and pointed it to him. The ground below Manticat burned with a purple circle before erupting into purple butterflies that enveloped his body. He was engulfed with a purple light that reformed his build into something more humanoid until the light faded.
A contrast to his dark and feline features are his light manly physique and physiognomy. He had a beautiful well-built body from the bloom of his youth. He looked golden and ethereal with his messy sunlight colored hair and pale complexion while his emerald eyes blinked at the witch. He wore a dark hooded cloak with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath and white pants while a sword hang from his belt completing his look.
Ruby's lips twisted into a bitter smile after seeing his face.
"I wish you have gotten my face and not his. You look just like your father." she said with a brokenhearted smile. Manticat pulled the black hood lower to hide his face, ashamed of his image.
"I'm sorry mother." he apologized before kneeling in front of her and taking her hand and placing a soft kiss on it.
Ruby shook her head lightly before placing a chaste kiss on his cheek. "No, don't be. At least you inherited my heart and I can see a bit of semblance of my mother's face in yours. She had such a beautiful yet stern face that you somehow inherited from my genes." Manticat seemed to brighten due to this as he caressed his face on her palm.
"Now you must go before the spell runs out. Fly just outside the hospital unseen and deliver her to Lancelot, you know who he is and then give him that letter. If anyone asks, you are my familiar that I sent to transport Guinevere safely from the forest as I battle a hoard of beowolves. Defend yourself if you must but return to me safely, okay?" Manticat nodded before lifting the maiden into his arms. He went to exit through the door but turned back once he passed through the threshold.
"Mommy, please stay safe. Dyrroth would be sad if you die again. I'm sorry I let you get hurt this time. I should have never left your side, mom. I love you." he said over his shoulders before summoning his wings and taking off to fly.
A single tear fell from her cheeks due to her son's touching words, she smiled with melancholy.
"You're such a sweet boy. I'm really sorry that I abandoned you but perhaps if I didn't I would just mess up your life and you wouldn't be the way you are today."
"I feel so tired. Maybe I'll just sleep while I wait for my baby to return." Ruby mumbled as her vision turned black and tiredness swallows her whole will. The next thing she knew darkness had already received her in its arms.
.
.
"Ruby. Ruby. Ruby wake up. You shouldn't sleep in there, it's not good for your back." The maiden slowly opened her eyes due to the soft feminine voice rousing her. She yawned before fully opening her eyelids presenting her brilliant emerald eyes.
She blinked in confusion of her surroundings. She recognized the place she's in but cannot put her finger into its name. She seems to be in some sort of a library instead of her cottage. There were no broken wood or damaged furniture because of her fight with Guinevere, no traces of her magical artifacts and potions, nor her magical tomes. It seems that she's been transported to someplace else.
She turned to face the familiar-looking raven-haired woman gazing worriedly at her. "Where am I?"
The woman giggled at her question, her soft serene voice making her heart flutter for some unknown reason. "We're in my mansion's library. You fell asleep while we were reading this book called How To Unsummon A Demon Prince by The Mischievous Her, our favorite author. Did you perhaps dream about something quite peculiar or interesting?"
The name of the woman suddenly popped up into her memory. Right, this woman is her fiancée Carmilla and she's currently visiting the Ansaac manor located in Moniyan for a few days. They were reading a romance novel about a demon and a witch while leaning against each other and touching their skins in flirtatious manners until Ruby fell asleep.
"Yes, since this witch, Ruby Orchid Butterfly, bore the same name as me, I suppose I dreamed of being her in this book and the plot intermingled with my own memory that's why there are details about my life in the dream."
"That is indeed a very interesting tale. Perhaps you should narrate it to me while we have our afternoon tea." Carmilla smiled pecking her cheek.
"Or we could browse more books by that shelf. This time maybe about... something more erotic." Ruby suggested with a coquettish smile touching Carmilla's thigh exposed by the slit in her crimson dress. The ravenett returned her smile before cupping her breast and kissing her lips.
Carmilla bit her ear lobe before licking her neck, sending pleasures through her body due to her sensitivity in that specific place. Ruby pushed her fingers inside her underwear and started playing with her already salivating core making Carmilla moan. They smiled as they touched each other's body, caressing their lustful flesh aching for each other's love and warmth. Carmilla placed her lips near her ear and whispered in a seductive voice.
"Yes, perhaps we could. And maybe orgasm as well in between reading those erotic books." Ruby smiled wider due to her words and began kissing her cleavage.
"That is a very interesting suggestion."
