Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Prince Nixon Edington
The plane had taken off from the Island about five hours ago. We made a pit stop at one of our territories located near the coast of California. From there, it was straight to the city where the rogues were at.
Most of the men from the guard were excited. Out of the ten, only two of them had ever visited the human world.
It was amusing to watch their expressions when we started descending, and the city and people were coming more into view.
“They look exactly like us,” one of the men said. I raised an eyebrow at him, wondering what exactly he expected them to look like. We had been trained to deal with humans, not only in the Academy when becoming part of the guard, but in school as well.
“What did you expect, you idiot?” One of the other men asked, scowling at the man who had made the previous comment.
I just stared at the pair, and started to get up when the captain announced the doors were opening. The private plane had landed near the airport, but we were still ways back from it.
My father and I had been aware that the Rogues weren’t expecting us, but we wanted to make it more of a surprise. Information could have gotten to them that an unknown plane had landed in the airport. Having them not know of us being in their home would give us the advantage.
Three black SUVs were ready to take us to the home I had rented for the duration of the trip, which I was hoping would be only a week, maybe two.
The Mansion I rented was much less than what I was used to at home. The Palace blew this place away any day, but I wasn’t expecting any more from the humans. Even when it came to building houses they lacked creativity.
I settled for the master bedroom and allowed the men to pick out the room they would occupy. In order to make the trip easier, we would all be equals. I was still their prince, and leader of this mission- but I didn’t want any special treatment while we were away from The Island.
“What will the plan be?” Mark, my second in command for the trip, asked.
“I have the address of Craven Bonham and Zander Thomas. All the other information, we will have to gather,” I replied, looking around at the other nine men in the room.
“Should we make a schedule to start a steak out and also count heads of the Rogue followers that we can?” Robert asked, looking ready for any of my orders.
It was the reason I had chosen this team. Despite only two of them being introduced to humans- they were all capable, strong, and ready to follow orders.
“Robert, you pick two men to accompany you. Two days from now we have to know their whereabouts at all times, and whether or not they stick to routines.”
“Yes, your majesty,” Robert replied, taking notes and preparing a plan.
“I want to be in the human world no more than two weeks. The Rogues have more men than the team we brought, but we are counting with the element of surprise. It should give us an edge,” I said to them.
It was late at night when we finished planning. I wasn’t expecting it to be a difficult mission, but I didn’t want to be caught off guard. Expecting that it would be easy to come and snatch the Rogues wouldn’t be helpful to anyone.
I was in bed, thinking about how tomorrow would work out. Even though last night I tried to catch some sleep, it seemed to have abandoned me. I was tired. Had I not been a Wolf, I would’ve probably been feeling weak.
My wolf was yelling to be let out. Not wanting to fight a losing battle, I decided to go for a run. The land stretched for about ten miles and I would be safe without worrying about giving our location out.
I decided to give the men a break for the night. The next few days would be difficult and long for everyone.
While all the men took for exploring the area- being aware to stay out of sight from the Rogues- I stayed at the mansion.
The run had done nothing to relief my Wolf. In any case, I returned even more restless than before I left. I wasn’t tired, but my senses were on edge.
Trying to let the stress seep from my body, I decided to drive into the city as well.
It was different than what I was used to in The Island, but quickly, I was settling in. I had been in the US plenty of times, but I always found the humans weak and with odd customs.
I drove to a café that looked lonely. It wasn’t really a surprise that it was open at such a late hour, and I was glad there was somewhere to go.
When I entered, the scent of coffee hit me full force. It was a smug little place, with some spiral stairs leading to a second floor that was full with more tables.
I was sitting in a table near the back. A few more people filled up the café, but not enough to bother me.
The last time I had been in the US, the city I had been assigned to, was packed with people.
While I took a sip of my coffee, I felt my Wolf stir up. I started looking around, becoming alert of my surroundings.
I inhaled a deep breath, and the most amazing scent I had ever smelled came to me. I was looking around the café, not understanding what was happening or what was causing that scent.
That was, until I saw her.
‘Mate’ my wolf said as I locked eyes with a girl whose beauty I couldn’t even begin to describe.
Miranda Bonham
It was really late, but I needed a run of coffee. I usually tried to avoid coffee, but lately, I had found myself drinking it more and more.
Summer had just started, but I felt the need to have everything organized before the semester began this fall. I really didn’t need anything else, but on my own, I couldn’t find a way to relax.
I went to the café near my apartment, trying to avoid the one where I had met Zander.
I walked inside, reveling at the warm temperature and hearing the coffee brewing. Being a Wolf had its perks.
I didn’t really want to think about my double life that involved my Wolf. My father was completely opposed to the idea of me studying and bettering my education. For him, high school was enough. He wanted me to find a Wolf, settle down, and take over the pack with my brother.
Even though my brother was meant to be the Alpha, my father wanted to assign whoever I chose to partner with, as the Beta.
I had never been interested in anyone from the pack. Not that there wasn’t a long list of strong and attractive shifters, it was just that none of them ever appealed to me.
Me- I wanted something different. I really didn’t know what I was looking for, but I was sure I would know when I found it.
As I walked more inside the café, I felt my Wolf unsettling. She was going crazy and was begging to be let out. I couldn’t understand what was happening. The last time she had gotten like this, was after an argument I had with my father. Even then, it wasn’t half as bad as she was getting right now.
I looked around, trying to hide the fact that I was having an inward melt down.
While I was looking around, I noticed a guy in the corner of the café, just staring at me. I couldn’t help but stare back. As I kept my gaze locked with his, my wolf started moaning in pleasure. It was embarrassing the thoughts that were running through my mind in that moment.
Everything about the guy screamed ‘appeal’. It was hard to miss how good looking he was. If there was ever a definition of handsome, it was him. I wanted to look away from him, but I couldn’t. His eyes seemed to have me in a daze.
It took me a while to snap out of the trance he had me in. When I did, I frowned at him, and simply took a seat in one of the tables towards the back. The guy staring at me was sitting a few tables away, but I wasn’t facing him.
Even though I noticed how attractive he was, my Wolf causing a disturbance within me seemed to be like a more important deal.
I heard the guy shuffling around in his table, so I put my head down- not wanting to give away what was happening with me.
He was standing in front of my table. I couldn’t see him, but I sensed it and I felt his presence near me. It took me that long to notice he was a Werewolf as well.
I looked up and raised my eyebrows, giving him an expectant look.
I didn’t recognize him, but I wasn’t really from this area. Like Zander, this guy must’ve also come from the city. Stanton University was just a few miles away from here. Now that I was going to attend the university, I had moved away from the woods and more into town.
“What’s your name and who do you respond to?” The guy asked me, with a demanding tone.
I laughed at him, feeling my Wolf start to settle down. I didn’t really know what had caused her to act up, but now, she seemed okay.
“Answer me,” the guy ordered, in a threatening tone. I chuckled at him and ignored his words, while I waved the waitress over.
“What can I give you?” The waitressed asked, when she came to the table.
“I just want a cappuccino and a bagel with cream cheese,” I told her. She wrote down my order in her pad and walked away, but not before giving the guy in front of me a lasting look.
The guy was still standing there, with an expectant look. I was wondering why my Wolf didn’t see him as a threat. Every unknown person that approached me usually got a growl from her. She was a feisty one, and this guy seemed to be exactly the type of person my Wolf loved to hate.
“Who do you respond to?” He asked once again.
“I don’t really respond to anyone, especially not to you. Now run along Wolf. Trust me when I say this, you don’t want to mess with me,” I told him, leaning forward and grinning. It was my warning to anyone that they were in over their heads if they thought they could take me on.
“Is that so?” He asked, cocking an eyebrow.
I nodded my head and remained silent. He took a seat in the chair across from me. Yesterday, Zander had done that, now it was this guy.
I was starting to wonder if I had a sign asking strange Wolves to come and join me.
“It so is,” I replied. He didn’t look amused by my comeback, but then again, he didn’t really seem like a playful one.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” The guy asked, in a condescending tone.
I looked at him, trying to see if he was familiar. Easy, he was the most handsome guy I had seen up to that point, but his attitude took points away. His longish light brown hair was all over the place, but it was obvious he styled it that way. His pale skin only complimented more to his piercing grayish green eyes that were staring at me, waiting for my reply.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” I replied with a question.
He looked annoyed by my answer, but didn’t say anything. The waitress brought me my order and asked the guy in front of me if he wanted anything else. He simply waved her off and she left, again staring at him as she went.
“Should I know who you are?” He asked me, staring at me as I prepared my bagel.
“Not really, I just thought we were playing Guess My Name, and I wanted to go first,” I told him, shrugging.
At a certain point, it crossed my mind that my father had sent him to watch over me. What kept me from assuming that was that this guy was being somewhat a jerk. All the other guys my father ever sent would always bow down to me- since I was the daughter of the Alpha.
“What’s your name, Rogue?”
“Rogue?” I asked him, laughing out loud.
“Yes, you’re a Rogue,” he repeated, nodding his head.
“Right… I don’t know what you’ve been smoking, so I’m not sure I should give you my name,” I told him.
“Smoking? What are you talking about?” He questioned, looking confused.
I raised an eyebrow, wondering if this guy was just trying to pull my strings.
“What’s your name?” I asked him, curious as to who this guy was and why he was being so strange.
“My name is Nixon,” he replied, raising his head and acting like royalty. I laughed at him, and bit a piece from my bagel. If my dad had sent him, at least this guy was entertaining.
“Well hi Nixon. I’m Miranda,” I told him, outstretching my hand for him to shake. He looked at it for a few seconds and I was about to take my hand back, not appreciating his hesitation. No faster did I have time to remove it before he was shaking my hand back.
The moment my hand made contact with his, I felt a light shock run through my body. I quickly took my hand back, and stared at it as I felt tingles all over where he had touched me.
Nixon just sat there, looking at me with an expression I didn’t understand.
Minutes went by without Nixon saying anything. I didn’t know what to say either so I remained silent.
“Who are you?” He asked me.
“I believe I already introduced myself. It hasn’t really changed,” I replied.
“Who do you respond to?”
“I also answered that. I don’t respond to anyone. Well, just my father, but I don’t really listen to him much,” I answered, remembering my father and his latest request of me leaving school, getting married, and taking over the pack with my brother.
“Who’s your father?” Nixon asked me.
“Don’t you know? Didn’t he send you to keep an eye on me and make sure I’m not ruining the family name by reading too many books?” I asked him sarcastically.
“What?” He asked, looking genuinely confused.
I raised an eyebrow. I guess my father hadn’t sent him after all. I’d think that by my name and me being a Wolf, he would know who I was. Every Wolf in this region knew my family. Many Wolves depended on my father for many things.
“Never mind, did you just move into the area?” I asked him.
“Uh, sure,” he said with an obvious hesitation.
“There’s no need to lie. We take stray Wolves, as long as they report with the Alpha,” I informed him.
“Stray wolves? Do you mean Rogues?” He asked.
“Rogues…? I like that. But, yes- stray, Rogue, homeless- whatever you are, we accept you in the pack. Just as long as you’re not all bad, or a killer, or a thief,” I told him.
“Who takes them?” He looked taken aback by what I had just said. I was surprised myself that he didn’t know all that before. He didn’t seem to know what exactly was going on. If I didn’t know for sure that humans can’t be turned into wolves, I would think that Nixon was a human. He didn’t seem to know a thing about Wolves.
“Well, packs take them. In this case, mine. My father is Alpha of the pack in this section. We aren’t many, but then again- there aren’t exactly a lot of Wolves.”
“Who is your father?”
“Craven. Alpha Craven Bonham. I’m Miranda Bonham, his daughter and future Beta of the pack,” I said, offering him a smile.
Nixon moved back in his chair. He looked a mix between shock and angry. I could see a slight shake taking over his body and his eyes were darkening. His Wolf was rising out.
He was just staring at me, not speaking a word. His jaw was clenched and his knuckles were turning white from how tight he had his hands in fists.
“Get up, you’re coming with me,” Nixon said, his voice sounding low but deadly.
“Excuse me?”
He didn’t say anything else, just walked next to me, grabbed my arm and started dragging me out of the café.
“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” I asked him in a whisper, not wanting to cause a scene. The café didn’t really need two Wolves going against each other right in front of their business.
The tingles I felt when his hand came into contact with my skin were amazing, but I was trying to fight against that. This guy was a threat. He was trying to take me and he was succeeding.
Once we were outside, he walked us to a black SUV. The streets were more or less empty. I tried yanking my hand from his hold, but he had a tight grip.
“Let me go,” I said to him, giving an order.
“I’m not going to do that. I’m also not going to hurt you, so you can relax,” he said in a calm voice.
“Oh right, the guy trying to kidnap me says that he’s not going to hurt me. Now that just calms me right down,” I sarcastically remarked.
He didn’t appreciate my words as he tried shoving me inside the truck. I was fighting to get released, but he was stronger than me. I should’ve been able to take him. Even if he was a guy, I was had Alpha blood in me. My father was the strongest Wolf in the area and I had taken after him in that.
When he finally got me inside the car, I tried to get out, but the door wouldn’t budge. He had put the child lock. I was about to break the window when he was already next to me on the driver’s side.
“Don’t even think about trying to escape. You won’t be successful,” he said before starting the car and zooming out of the parking lot.
