chapter three
Wanda's POV
"...nda! Get up, we've got school." I groaned into my pillow, rolling over to ignore Dick some more. I heard him sigh, coming further into the room. "Come on, if you don't get up now you won't have time to shower."
I sat up, my hair going in a million different directions as I glared at my cousins smile. "I don't want to go to some posh private school. Can't I go to public school with M'gann and Conner?"
Dick rolled his eyes, pulling me out of bed without answering me. He led me down the stairs and into the dining room where Bruce and Alfred were waiting with breakfast. We said good morning to each other and ate in silence, the only sound was our cutlery hitting our plates. I excused myself early, heading back upstairs to shower and get ready for school, as much as I didn't want to.
The car ride was filled with Bruce trying to reassure me of how great of a school Gotham Academy was and how I would love it there. I tried to be polite and pretend to believe him, but I knew otherwise. I had an accent that wasn't British and this was a rich school, I was going to get eaten alive. And Dick said no powers. Boo.
Once we were out of the car, I followed Dick to the office. Time to pretend I don't know English.
☆ ☆ ☆
"-and so the dumbass says in English that she doesn't speak English! Luckily the lady at the front desk bought it, so Wanda went the whole day speaking Romanian to avoid the snobs at GA." Dick sighed as he finished retelling the story of my idiocy at the office this morning. I can't believe I did that. "Thankfully we are in all the same classes so I could translate for the brat."
I stuck my tongue out at him, dodging the shoe he threw in my direction with a chuckle. "I wouldn't have it any other way, cuz."
"You've got some balls, Wanda, I'll give you that." Wally chuckled, highfiving me as he took the seat across from me on the couch.
"Biggest set here." I smirked, snickering at the sounds of protests from everyone. I held my hands up in defense, laughing harder at the faux pout on Artemis' face. We all sobered up fast when Batman walked in the room followed by Black Canary and Red Tornado, sitting up straighter when Batman sent us one of his famous glares.
"Team, we called you here today because we have a mission for you." We all followed the adults over to the holographic computer, Batman pulling up the schematics of an island. "We have reason to believe that the League of Shadows, led by Ra's Al Ghul, is planning something big. What we need you to do is sneak onto the island and do some reconnaissance, got it? Do not engage unless you are attacked, is that clear?"
We all nodded, getting the go ahead to embark on our journey to the Isle of Shadows.
On the bioship the atmosphere was tense, this being my first mission with the team none of us knew how we would do outside of a simulation. So, needless to say, all of us were on edge. Especially going up against the likes of Ra's Al Ghul.
"Scarlet Witch, can't you just make us invisible to everyone on the island?" Tigress asked from her seat, half turned around to see me. I shrugged noncommittally, earning looks from the others. "Why not?"
I bit my lip uneasily, my fingers sparking red before going out. "That would require a lot more skill than I have, more finesse. Right now I am just raw power, like an overcharged battery. I need to hone my skills more before I attempt that, I don't want to explode anyone's head...I'm sorry."
Nightwing nodded, accepting my answer as M'gann announced we were reaching the drop zone. She put the ship in camouflage mode as we all stood from our seats. I raised my hands, the red energy flowing out and engulfing the team as I lowered us through the opening in the bottom of the ship down the couple dozen meters to the ground, retracting the energy as soon as our feet hit the ground.
Once we were all safely on the ground and the mind link was set up, we split off into our groups and went off in our designated directions; Nightwing and I took the north, Arsenal and Aqualad the south, Superboy and Tigress the east, and Miss Martian with Kid Flash to the west.
Twenty minutes of wandering the island and hiding from every person we crossed paths with, the mind link exploded with activity.
Argh, SB and I have got nothing so far. Anyone?
Aqualad and I have got nothing but some new training techniques. Other than that, no master plan.
Scarlet Witch and I are empty handed, did you know they are training kids here?
Hate to break it to you, Wing, but we were and are still kids too...
KF, Miss M, got anything?
...
...
Hello?
Miss M? Kid Flash? You guys okay?
Wally? M'gann? What is going on?
...nngh...need...help...Wally isn't...doing too...gre...at
On it.
Luckily our suits had trackers in them otherwise we would've been screwed. Nightwing and I immediately started off in the direction of Miss M and Kid Flash, me levitating the two of us while Nightwing gave me directions through the mind link. We were the first group to arrive, seeing Miss Martian stuck in a ring of fire and Wally bleeding heavily beside her, both barely conscious as their attacker stood inside the circle with them. It is a good thing I am also a telepath so I could strengthen the mind link, otherwise we really would've been screwed.
I felt my eyes turn scarlet as I released Nightwing from my hold, instead focusing my magic on lifting the fire away from my teammates. Once it was in a forcefield, I whispered under my breath 'begone' and the fire disappeared. I smirked as my suspicions about my powers were intensified before turning my attention back to my team, the rest now arriving to face the Shadow who was holding Wally at sword-point.
Growling, I flung my hand up and focused my energy on the Shadow, entering his mind and searching for what he was afraid of most. While I was in his mind, I could hear his body let out a scream of terror as I showed him his deepest fear, making it his reality so he would release Wally. I let out a little chuckle, continuing to show him his fear until I could sense Wally and M'gann next to me, exiting his mind to see the Shadow on the ground with sobs racking his body, his head in his hands and my teammates eyes on me.
"Wanda, what did you do to him?" Arsenal whispered, some fear in his voice as he gestured to the trembling assassin.
I shrugged, wiping the sweat from my brow before telling them the truth. "I showed him his deepest, darkest terrors to save KF's life."
Nightwing shook his head, narrowing his eyes. "That isn't how we do things, Wanda."
I scoffed, gesturing to Miss Martian and Kid Flash. "It worked, didn't it? Besides, I thought we used codenames on missions." I turned to my injured teammates closing my eyes and centering my magic on their wounds. "Heal." I commanded, opening my eyes to see them good as new.
"H-how di-?"
"Magic." I winked with a smile, looking at the Shadow who was still sobbing. I sighed, rolling my eyes with a flick of my wrist. "Forget this night. We were never here, you did not see anything but trees." The assassin fell asleep, snores coming from his mouth instead of cries. I looked over at my team, raising a brow as if to say 'happy now?'.
"Good, now let's get going before we have another incident." Aqualad stared at me as he said this, earning another scoff from me and some cursing in Romanian.
On the bioship, the tension was thicker than molasses. With a groan, I slammed my hands on the arms of my chair, making my teammates jump. "For craps sake, I used that trick on the Avengers and they let me on their team without hesitation. They forgave me for showing me their deepest fears, hell, they thanked me. And you guys can't even look at me after I did it to a random assassin to save Wally from being flayed?"
"You did that to the Avengers?!"
I nodded, looking down at my lap. "It was during my time with Hydra. They had drugged me with some heavy dope and tried to use me to bring the Avengers down. Ultimately, it failed. Instead of bringing them down, Stark and Banner built Ultron, which led to mine and Pietro's escape from Hydra." I sighed, looking up to see my team actually facing me for the first time since I melted that dude's mind. "Look, if you don't want me to use that trick I won't."
There was a pause before M'gann spoke up. "Well, it could come in handy against some bigger threats. Maybe not on the henchmen though, okay?"
I smiled at her, nodding in agreement. I could work with that.
??? POV
My eyes slowly opened, looking around the room I was in. It seemed to be some marble laboratory, all white with vials of green liquid every where. I tried to sit up, only to find I was strapped down to some metal table with wires and tubes all over my body, needles poking and prodding into my veins.
"Where...where am I?" I rasped out to no one. Or so I thought, until I got a reply from a figure that emerged from a shadowy corner like a drama queen.
"Ah, you are awake. Good. It is time we start training, young one." The man with the salt and pepper goatee spoke, an evil aura seemingly exuding from his very person.
"Who...who are you?" I glared, before thinking a little harder. I closed my eyes, my head hitting the table with a little thunk. "Who am I?"
The mysterious man chuckled darkly, patting the top of my head with his tanned hand. "You, my friend, are the key to getting what I want. Now, sit back and relax. Let me do my work."
A helmet was placed on my head, squeezing my head tightly as goggles were placed over my eyes. I groaned when the helmet began to hum and the goggles turned on, images flashing at what seemed like a million miles an hour before my eyes. A voice came through the headphones on the helmet, speaking a language that was vaguely familiar, like I should know it.
Before I knew it, I was at the complete mercy of the man with the goatee.
