Chapter One
It's 2002, and I'm on my way south. Back up north, in Maine, my boss, Mathew, had given me a very important mission. It was my duty to go to the abandoned island of Roanoke, and try to figure out what made that colony disappeared all those years ago.
"Ma'am, we're almost there," the captain of the boat told me.
"Thank you, captain," I replied, gathering up my belongings.
I stood at the railing of the boat, watching the island draw closer.
Abandoned is right, I thought, looking at the island.
It had an eerie feel around it, and I clutched my locket that I always wore. I looked at the captain, and he had that same nervous feeling I had.
We soon hit the shore, and I unsteadily climbed onto the island.
"I'll be back to get you in about a week or so," the captain said. "That's what Mathew told me."
"Okay, thank you," I replied, giving him a weak smile.
"My pleasure, Mrs. Liberachi," the captain replied, tipping his hat.
I watched from the island as he turned his boat around, and took off. I continued watching until it disappeared over the horizon, and I turned back to face the island. Taking a shakey breath, I began walking into the forests of Roanoke.
All was quiet, except for the sounds of the animals. Slowly, I began to take in my surroundings, and began to enjoy my walk. Suddenly, I halted when I saw a palisade. It was the same one that surrounded the colony all that time ago. I dug into my backpack, taking out my notebook and pencil. I scratched a rough sketch of the still remaining palisade. Something caught my eye, and I walked closer to the ancient structure. As I went closer, I saw letters on the palisade. Etched into the palisade was the word "Croatoan."
"'Croatoan?'" I asked out loud to myself. "Either this means that the colonists moved to the other island next to this, or the Croatan Indians killed them."
"You'll never find out what happened to us."
I let out a small shriek, and turned around. No one was there.
"Who's there?!?" I called out, my voice shakey.
No answer.
Panicking, I backed up until my back hit the palisade. Slowly, I began to calm down.
It's probably just my imagination, I thought.
I sighed, and continued to look at the palisade. The word "Croatoan" was the only hint I had. My heart began to fall, but one thing kept me going: there could still be more clues around the area. I just needed to check.
I searched all day until it began to get dark. I decided to set up camp inside the boarders of the palisade. The moon was high into the sky when I finally lay down. As I was drifting off to sleep, I could swear that I heard a little girl laughing.
The little girl approached the palisade, laughing. She will have fun with her new playmate.
