chapter 1.
"Is this the best idea, Master Regulus?" Kreacher sighed shakily handing Regulus a warm towel.
"It's the only way I'll get out of this mess, Kreacher." he took the towel from the house elf. "It's expected for no one to have survived that. If people believe I died, I can get away from everyone, and still find these horcruxes. You took the locket, correct?"
"Yes, master." Kreacher nodded. "Where will you go?"
Regulus sighed. He knew what he had to do. The only place he could go to where he wouldn't be found by the Death Eaters. Even the Order. "I'll- have to live amongst the muggles for a while."
"But Master Regulus-"
"It's settled, Kreacher. My loyalty no longer stands with the Dark Lord. This is the only way. There's no stopping me."
Regulus thought that by doing this, he would be able to help the Order without directly joining. How he would be able to help from the muggle world he was still working on, but he knows he'll figure it out, especially if he still has Kreacher on the inside. He believed that if he used his information on horcruxes that he already knew, and Kreacher secretly feeding him information on the side, he'd be able to get something done. He had wanted to help the Order defeat Voldemort for a while now, but knowing its members and its values, trying to simply join them was out of the question. He was certain Sirius wouldn't allow it, he was certain his brother would always hate him, and his ties to the Death Eaters would not help his case. He thought maybe one day he'd reunite with his brother, but that day would not be soon.
"I'll see you around, Kreacher. You know what to do." Regulus nodded, shooing Kreacher off.
"Kreacher understands. Goodbye, Master Regulus."
---
A bookstore. It was quite small and simplistic, sat in a little corner of a street. Regulus walked down the street, noticing the small store, and deciding to take a visit. Of course, Regulus was not familiar with the muggle authors and their ways of literature, so this would be an unusual experience for him. He walked into the store, looking around, quite skeptical of the environment, but, surprisingly, having somewhat of an open mind. He noticed the muggle sitting at a register near the middle of the store, eating an apple, a book in her hand. She didn't look up at him, but still acknowledged him.
"Welcome- break it you buy it." she slowly turned the page of her own book.
"It's a bookstore- what is there to break?" Regulus replied, a tone of attitude present.
"You're funny." she said, with no hint of amusement in her voice.
Regulus chose to ignore the girl, and continued looking around. He liked how cozy the place seemed. Most people would feel it was a bit crowded. The store kind of reminded him of Ollivanders, some of the books were cluttered onto shelves, but not too unorganized.
The girl finally looked up at him. "Why are you dressed like that?"
Regulus looked at his wardrobe, and then back up at the girl. "I beg your pardon? Dressed like what?"
The girl scoffed, "Like you just returned from a funeral?"
Regulus hadn't put too much thought into that aspect, perhaps he should've, as it might not be common for muggles to dress like... wealthy wizarding families. "Well how do you know I haven't?" he snapped back.
"I don't. Which is why I asked."
Regulus scoffed at her tone, "It isn't any of your business, is it?"
"Aren't you a ray of sunshine..." she mumbled, returning to her own book.
Regulus ran his fingers across the spines of the books, making confused looks at the titles. The saying "Never judge a book by it's cover" was also common in the wizarding world, but Regulus was really wondering if things with these sorts of names is what muggles found as entertaining. The girl looked up again, wondering why he seemed so disgusted by the things he was looking at. She found him to be quite odd.
Regulus grabbed a random book off the shelf. He just needed some form of entertainment, even if it was from something called "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde?" He raised his eyebrow, inspecting the front and back of the book.
"So... are you gonna buy that? Or just stand there looking at it?" the girl sighed again.
Regulus looked up at her, a sort of scowl on his face. He huffed, walking over to the counter, placing the book down.
She picked it up, "Jekyll and Hyde.. that's a good read."
"Mhm..." Regulus hummed.
"That'll be £2.50**.**" she held her hand out, waiting for the money.
Regulus rolled his eyes, taking a couple coins out of his pocket. He placed the coins in her palm, and gave her a weak smile, to which she gave him a confused look in response.
"Alright then... have a good read! Come again soon... or don't." she returned the smile, still confused. Through all the time she spent working at this store, she had never seen someone quite as mysterious and odd as he was.
"Yeah, sure." he walked out of the store.
Regulus had actually been staying at a small flat across the street from the bookstore, so perhaps he would be returning again. The conversion of wizard currency to muggle currency wasn't as difficult as Regulus thought it would be, which made beginning his "new life" a lot easier than anticipated. As he walked to his new "home," he took another look at the book he got.
Sometimes, he'd get in his head, and imagine what his younger self would think right now. What his parents would think. What Sirius would think... Regulus Arcturus Black? Living among muggles? Preposterous to most.
His mind wandered to the muggle from the bookstore. She was odd. She had an attitude that some might find amusing, and to Regulus, she was interesting.
Regulus entered the flat. It was empty, not much for decoration. He had the basics, a bed, kitchen appliances, a couch, etc. It was lonely. Quiet. He liked it like that.
---
Regulus continued roaming around his newfound "home," exploring the area around. Though, he somehow always found his way back to that little bookstore. Though not entering every time, he would often walk by and take a glance in. After the criticism of his clothing from the girl the other day, he found himself dressing differntly.. more like a muggle but still somewhat sophisticated.
He finished Jekyll and Hyde quite quickly, and he was quite fascinated with the way the plot went. Alas, he needed a new form of entertainment, and of course landed on getting another book from the same little shop. He really didn't know why he felt so drawn to the store. This was his 4th time in a week entering the store, the same girl there everytime.
She watched as he walked in, again, noticing his gradual change in wardrobe, this time, he completely strayed away from his original look. She quietly walked away from her counter, over to where Regulus was standing, looking at the book selection.
"Have you read any of these before?" he physically jumped at her presence, startled by her voice.
"A warning would be nice. No I have not read them." Regulus sighed, placing another book back on the shelf.
She was baffled, "Not a single one?"
"No."
"Okay then..." she took a pause, before opening her mouth to speak again, "Hey- who are you?"
"Excuse me?" Regulus turned to face her.
"Like your name? Why you're always here? For example. My name is Indigo. Everyone calls me Indie. I am always here because I work here."
"Indigo."
"Indie." she corrected.
He nodded.
"So... you are?"
Regulus knew he would face this some day. He couldn't tell her the truth, he was supposed to be in hiding. Though, he was taking too long to answer. She could tell he was thinking about his answer.
"R-" he started, and then immediately hesitating. "Ronan-?" he tells her, with an unsure tone.
Indie raised her eyebrows at him. "Okay.. you're an awful liar. What's your real name?"
"That is my real name." he nods, over confident.
"No it's not." she laughs.
"Yes it is."
"Nuh uh."
Regulus pauses, before sighing in defeat. She was going to keep going like this until he gave her a real answer. "Regulus."
"Okay man- I said your real name" she snorts.
Regulus looks up at her, almost offended, that's when she got it.
"...That is your real name?" she looked at him in shock, trying not to continue laughing.
"Yes. It is." he replied.
"Wow."
"Regulus is a very respectable name!" he defends himself, furrowing his brows at her.
"Is it really?"
"It sounds so!"
"It sounds like you might've gotten bullied for it in school, I will not lie to you, buddy."
"I beg your pardon- you're quite rude, you know that?" Regulus turned away from her.
"I have been told- but you're not such a saint yourself!"
"Yes well- it's different." Regulus continued looking at the books.
"How on earth-" she stopped, looking at the shelf he was at. She grinned. "You know- this one here is quite entertaining." she took a book off the shelf and handed it to him.
"Dracula?" he read the cover.
"Dracula!" she nodded. "It's about lawyers, vampires, and a spooky castle. Think you could handle it, Regulus." she smiled.
Regulus took the book from her, holding back a small smirk, "I believe I'll be just fine, Indigo."
She grinned, taking the book back, walking to the counter. "Well- let's get you checked out then!"
After doing so, she repeated the phrase she said the first time he came in, but might possibly be meaning it this time, "Have a good read, Regulus, come again soon! Let me know how you like it!"
Regulus waved before turning around, sort of smirking to himself. Yeah, she was an intriguing one.
Indigo.
