♛ Thirty Two
By god she was drunk. Drunker than the damn Military Police officers on duty. Her eyes were glazed with heavy intoxication.
Her cheeks were rosier than the damn blood running through her veins. I wasn't even sure she realizes that she's talking to me. Hell, I don't think she realizes where she was. I set my face into a stern expression having my lips tugged downwards.
"You're drunk," I point out firmly. Emma's smile only widens as if what I said was delightful. She dramatically slams her hand over her chest while cocking her head.
"Who? Me? Never! I would never drink, Captain!"
"Then what's in your hand?"
"Hm?" She gazes down at her right hand with a dumb expression. She brings the large bottle to her face and squints her eyes.
I watch in fascination. How could someone so bright be so stupid at the same time? Emma abruptly gasps before giggling like a child. I was bewildered by it all and remain standing before her with an irk.
"Can you keep a secret?" She suddenly asks with a mischief gleam in her eyes. I study her for a moment while setting my lips into a considerable frown.
"Depends," I reply. Seeing that as a yes she trots towards me, the cloak bouncing off her as she did so.
As she comes near my nose immediately scrunches at the awful stench. It was strong but also sour. I took notice that it came from her opened mouth. Alcohol had tainted her mouth to the point I knew what type of liquids she pounded down her throat. The mere realization made the scent all the more revolting.
"My god you reek, Emma!" I shout with a scowl as I back away. I pinch my nose and put a hand out to stop her advance.
However, she took it as a sign for her to pull me close. Clasping my hand between her own she pulls it suddenly to her chest and giggles uncontrollably.
I was not amused. If anything I do my best to not dwell on the fact my hand was pressed upon her breasts.
"I got this from Erwin's personal stash," she exclaims with a boisterous laugh. "Isn't that crazy?"
"You--you what?" I gape with my eyes almost protruding out of their sockets. I knew more than anyone that Erwin loved his hard whiskey. I wouldn't be surprised if Erwin wouldn't let her go unpunished. She grins and let's go of my hand.
"SHH!" She presses a finger firmly over her lips. "It's a secret, Levii!" Her words were starting to slur and her laughter was becoming out of hand.
I watch her silently and take notice to her continuous swaying and obscured way she spoke. I didn't even understand a single word. All I knew was she went down to the storage basement, raided Erwin's stash, and now became an impossible drunk to deal with.
"You need to go home," I sigh tiredly. "You're drunk beyond help."
"I--I am not drunk!" She hiccups before pointing a lazy finger my way. "How dare you--you for saying that to my face! I would kick you in the balls for that!"
I scoff, "It would be a miracle if you could pull a stunt like that. You can't even lift your hand without stumbling to the side."
Confusion washes over her face and she pouts once more. She lifts a hand and I as said, she stumbles to the side. On instinct I grab hold of her shoulder and bring her close. Despite her being slightly taller than me, her head rests upon my shoulder.
"Damn, brat," I scold. "Didn't I just say you'll stumble?"
Emma grins a drunkard's smile, completely disregarding my words. "Wow, I just noticed--you're hella hot."
Her words suddenly caught me off guard. What the hell? My breath hitches in my throat, all my senses going numb while my body becomes frozen.
I knew she was drunk but even so, it didn't stop my damn blood to fail me. I feel it all rush to my cheeks while I struggle to breathe. Damn her.
"Ooh, look! You're red!" She shouts happily.
"I am not, stupid!" I retort and forcefully look away. "You're seeing things." I shouldn't even care for such things. I roughly push her away and listen to her whines. I will not spend another minute with this imbecile. "Head home, Emma," I order. "You're not thinking straight."
Even though I gave her that order, it was I that wanted to go away. I couldn't get a grip on myself. My thoughts were all jumbled and were surrounded by Emma's simple comment.
I click my tongue, I think her stupidity was rubbing off me. Twisting my heel, I began my forceful walk back to the office building. However, I don't make it far.
Only a few feet I think till I stopped. Soft cries started to greet my ears. It brought a small tingle in my chest.
"You too?" I hear Emma cry. "Why does everyone hate me? I thought--I thought I was good enough! Yet, you people aren't satisfied!"
I linger for a bit and listen to her soft sobs as her body hits the ground. Now it was finally coming out, her reason for becoming so drunk. And I hated it.
I hated how people drove her to become more pitiful than she already is. Now, she became my problem. I grit my teeth before turning around.
Emma was sitting on her knees while pressing her hands over her eyes. She was shaking in frustration but I was pretty sure the alcohol made her all the more dramatic.
"Get a grip," I mutter as I stop before her. "Don't act more moronic than you already are."
Like a timid cat she hesitantly lifts her head. Her glassy eyes then land upon me. I frown at the sight. Her bottom lip begins to tremble as she tries to form words. I don't give her enough time to do so as I lift her off the ground.
"C'mon." I wrap my arm around her waist and drape hers around my shoulders. "Can you give directions to your apartment?"
My only response was a feeble nod. Releasing a groan, I walk out to the streets. Considering how close she lived to headquarters it took us longer than usual to arrive at her apartment.
I would curse every now and then when she would point at the wrong direction. Her obnoxiousness was starting to dial down as exhaustion started to kick into gear. Her feet dragged as we walked and her head hung low as she whined and groaned.
Finally making it to her building, I drag her body up the steps till we reached the second floor. I demand her to give me the keys but only got a whine of protest from her.
"Hopeless," I grumble as I shove my hand into her pant pocket. I jam the key into the keyhole before pushing the door open.
We both stumble in, the moon was our only light. I was able to take a glimpse of my surroundings. Emma's apartment was not how I imagined it to be.
A wooden table with two chairs were placed by the back wall where the three windows were. Curtains didn't cover them allowing the moonlight to be casted in. There was kitchen to my left and seemed to be bare as ever.
The walls were empty, nothing was nailed upon them. A couch and coffee table was placed before us and seemed dusty under the light. It was like there was no life here. Everything seemed depleted to a dull background.
And somehow it brought a small frown to my face. Emma's groan reawaken my senses and I kick the door shut. Dragging her body, I drop her atop the couch.
I did not fail to notice the dust flying in the air. Disgusting, I think with disapproval.
"God damn it, Levi!" Emma whines. "Be gentle!"
I cast my eyes back down to her. Her back faced me as she attempts to crawl atop the couch. I click my tongue.
"Your fault for getting stupid drunk."
"Shut up. It's not my fault."
"Please, with the stench you're flaunting about I wouldn't be surprised if people mistook as a barrel of ale."
It seems Emma's slowly becoming sober. But I could still sense the intoxication overwhelming her. She sits up and gazes up at me with hooded eyes.
Despite the haziness fogging her once bright, chestnut eyes her face began to crumble. The way she gritted her teeth was like she was biting against something. Something like her tears, I could see them well up in her eyes.
But they don't fall. She resisted them. Devastation, frustration, anger, regret.
They all showed all at once that it overwhelmed me. I wasn't sure what to do, my fingers tingled as the urge to hold her greeted me. I fought against the craving.
"Don't you get it? I just want a distraction," she murmurs tightly. "They all keep bringing it up--talking like they know shit but, they don't know what I'm dealing with." She drops her gaze and releases an airy chuckle. "I'm pathetic, but what else can I do?"
"Pick another way to distract yourself," I reply dully. I keep my stern gaze on her, not once looking away. "Stop thinking."
Silence lingers between us with my words sinking into Emma. She takes a moment before looking back at me. A ghost of a smile pastes itself in her lips. I only stare at her blankly before dropping my arms.
"While you figure that out I'll be taking my leave."
"Wait." She grabs hold of my sleeve, stopping my movements.
I sigh through my nose, "What are you doing?"
"You-you're just gonna leave me?" She asks with her words becoming slurred. "You said I need another way to distract myself."
"I know. So figure it out," I snap. Emma's grip was so weak. I could easily shake it off with a rough yank but, I didn't. I couldn't find it in me to do so. So I stay and listen to Emma wobble to her feet.
"Do you---think this is a better option?"
Confused but also curious, I glance over my shoulder. My eyes widen immediately, almost protruding out of their sockets. A stifled breath gets caught in my throat with all my blood rushing to my cheeks.
Her cloak and her leather jacket were thrown atop the couch leaving her only in her white-buttoned shirt. The shirt that she was busy unbuttoning. Her eyes weren't on me but on her fumbling hands as they struggle to undo the buttons.
I couldn't do anything but stare. I didn't want to and even cursed myself for a lowly action but I couldn't turn away. Especially when part of her pink bra started to peek from underneath the thin fabric. I swallow thickly, I wasn't sure if the temperature rose in here or it was just me.
"Emma, wha-what are you doing?" I question with a husky tone.
"Not thinking," she slurs when she finally got the last button. Finally looking at me, she takes a step. "You said not to."
"I didn't mean it like this, brat," I breathe in exasperation. I was doing my absolute best to keep my eyes off her tanned skin. It only made my heart hammer violently against my chest.
"What are you trying to do?"
Her body was now inches from mine as well as her face. Her breath hits me but now it wasn't a bother nor was the way she looked down at me. I catch her drunken smirk, it only made my insides tighten.
"Distracting myself. I think this way would be most effective." She laughs softly before placing a supporting hand over my shoulder. "I never kissed a Captain. This would be interesting."
"Emma, stop!" I order and swat off her hand. "You're going to break many rules if you keep going."
"So? Are you going to stop me?"
I almost said no. God my lips were ready to let those words escape. I clamp my mouth shut in fear of my voice failing me.
I set my eyes into a fury glare hoping that was answer enough. It doesn't faze her.
"Please," she almost begs with pleading eyes. "If you're going to judge me for drinking then at least let me do this. I want you to distract me, at least for a bit."
My hands shook, my heart was rapping loudly. She wants me to distract her in a way I couldn't imagine. I could sense that neediness radiating off of her.
The way she looked at me and the way her body was now pressed upon mine, she acted as though I was her only option left. I keep telling myself I couldn't, that I should push her away and walk out while I still can. But I can sense an urge building inside me and even understood it.
How could I desire such things? Especially from the woman I despised the most?
Was it just because of what I saw? Or was it because I felt pity?
"Levi, you need this," Emma whispers almost frantically. Her lips were now grazing my own. I don't have any strength to pull away. "You need a distraction more than me."
Her words suddenly clicked something inside me. It was like everything fell into place. If she thought of as only that would it be bad if I also thought the same?
My eyes refocus on her, I feel a smirk coming to my lips. If she only saw it as this then I'll do the same. After all, I'm helping her out. I don't want to see her miserable any longer.
My arms snake their way around her neck causing her to smile in delight. I click my tongue at the sight.
"Shut up, brat," I growl. "Keep talking and I won't help you."
