Chapter 2

He reluctantly left his brothers' body by the gorge after shedding many tears onto his pelt. He bowed his head and walked off again to the bridge. As his paws touched the dense wood, he thought about his brother's death even more. He would never hear his brothers' gentle words or feel his warm pelt brush against his warming him ever again. He thought about how alone he would be now. My brothers gone. He repeated in his mind as if he could not even believe it himself. He felt his paws touching the wet mud of the twoleg trail again as he stepped off on the other side of the bridge. He could smell faint twoleg scents mixed with WindClan scents. He felt dazed. He followed the strongest WindClan hoping to find their camp. He stumbled along the scent trail. He could not think straight and did not realize when the scents grew fresher. His head spun. His eyes grew heavy. It felt as though the world was shaking under his paws. He stopped walking trying to catch his breath, but it just seemed to go even faster, and his vision grew blurry. He heard the faint yowls of cats but at the time he did not care. His body collapsed against the hard ground. He could hear muffled voices talking but his eyes were closed, and he could not see anything but red. He felt himself being lifted onto something and then being moved. He had no strength to open his eyes or protest. He just lay limp letting his body rest. After a while of being carried he was set down on a bed of moss then there was more muffled talking. He smelled herbs and then he felt soft paw's part his mouth open and put them inside. The herbs tasted slimy and gross in his mouth, but reluctantly he swallowed. He wanted to get up and see where he was, but he was too weak to do anything. He let sleep claim him finally. He dreamed of battle, cats were clawing and biting each other. He saw some lying dead, but he could not make out their faces. The scene changed to four cats talking. Then he realized. It was a memory. The time when the WindClan cats had come to discuss war between the clans. He remembered Honeytail and Jake plotting to start war before the WindClan cats would and catch them by surprise having the advantage. He gasped opening his eyes and jolting his head up. An unfamiliar voice spoke, "Ah, your awake." The voice said. He turned his voice toward it. It was an older looking tom. "You probably don't know me." The tom said but Robbinpaw just stayed silent. "I'm Hawkwing, the WindClan medicine cat." The tom spoke. Robbinpaw looked around and realized he had been dumb. They were in a den made completely out of stone. It was a medicine den in WindClan camp. "Now, why are you here?" Hawkwing asked. "Um- I-" he could not find the words for it. "It's fine. Your injured. Take a little while to think about it." He said padding away outside. It was still day. He had not slept long. He sighed. He had come there to join the clan, but he did not know how to explain it to Hawkwing just yet. Yawning he sat up. At that moment Hawkwing came back into the den with a familiar cat behind him. He narrowed his eyes then saw it was Volcanicstar. He dipped his head before the WindClan leader. Volcanicstar took a few paces toward him then sat down. "Hello. Its Robbinpaw is it?" The leader asked. Robbinpaw nodded. "I'm Volcanicstar. Now tell me, why were you in WindClan territory?" Robbinpaw took a breath before speaking, "I came here with my brother Ravenpaw but along the way..." he paused before saying it. "But along the way he died." He bowed his head for his brother's loss. "I'm sorry for your loss but that still doesn't explain why you're here." Robbinpaw sighed. "I came here to ask if I could join WindClan before we start the war. Our clan is being led by a rouge." He spat. "My clan is messed up and I don't feel like I belong there anymore." Volcanicstar looked him over for a moment. "Wise choice," he finally said. "Yes, you may join WindClan." Robbinpaw dipped his head in respect to his new leader. "But you must stay loyal to WindClan." Volcanicstar said. "Yes. Of course. I will always be loyal to the clan who accepted me." Volcanicstar nodded and turned to head out the den, but at that moment Robbinpaw remembered what RiverClan was plotting. "Wait!" he called after the leader. He looked over his shoulder. "Yes?" he said padding back over to him. "RiverClan's planning to attack before we are!" Volcanicstar pricked his ears. "Really? When?" "Tomorrow at dawn. It would be best if we got to the twoleg bridge right before then and waited for them to get there then attack. We can leave some warriors and apprentices at camp to protect camp in case RiverClan send their warriors to attack from both ways." Robbinpaw told him. He nodded, "that would be best. Clever idea. It will be useful to have an apprentice like you here in WindClan. And I'll find you a mentor after the war." "Ok. Thank you Volcanicstar." He left the den and Robbinpaw was about to follow when Hawkwing blocked his path. "If you want to go anywhere near the battle tomorrow then you're going to stay here and let me treat your wounds." Robbinpaw sighed but obeyed and lay down on his moss bed again.

That night he slept in the apprentice den in and abandoned moss bed in the back. He lay there quietly while other apprentices slept soundly. He decided he should get some sleep so he could be ready before dawn. Lying down his head he fell asleep. The sound of paw steps awoke him. Springing to his paws he sprinted out of the den as the cats were starting to head out. He quickly got a mouse and took a few bites before following swiftly. They headed along the route to the bridge. The sun just started to rise. The RiverClan cats were not there yet thankfully. The WindClan cats made a line from the senior warriors to the younger warriors and apprentices. There were four lines, and he was in the second one right behind Volcanicstar and Dapperclaw. They waited for a little while before Robbinpaw spotted the RiverClan army coming along. "There they are!" he hissed in Dapperclaws ear. Dapperclaw nodded and stood ready for battle. When RiverClan got to the bridge they looked stunned. They had not expected WindClan to be waiting for them. They were planning to ambush them at camp but with Robbinpaw on their side WindClan had an advantage. He was crouched behind the first line with the rest of the apprentices so Jake nor Honeytail saw him. When RiverClan got over their shock Jake straightened himself and called out upon his warriors, "RiverClan attack!" he yowled and the RiverClan cats rushed forward into battle. WindClan did too. The first row of warriors rushed out first then the others did in unison. He went out with second row. He yowled a battle cry and leaped upon the first cat in front of him. This cat was one he recognized. It was Branchpelt one of the younger warriors. He was only made a warrior a few moons ago. He had been kind to him and when Stormclaw saw him he gasped and almost did not attack but when Robbinpaw clawed at him, even though he didn't want to hurt his old friend they were in war. He had to. Stormclaw shook out of his daze and even though his gaze was sad he fought back. Though he did not fight much only dodged swiftly and tripped him. Finally, Stormclaw pounced on his back. Robbinpaw tried to shake him off, but he was too heavy. He stumbled around and he heard Stormclaw whisper something in his ear, "Why?" he said softly. He leaped off but neither cat attacked. They just stared sadly into each other's eyes. Not being able to look at his old friend's sad look anymore he turned and ran off to fight someone else. But before he could get to anyone else, he heard paws bounding toward his and whirled around. He saw Honeytail bounding toward him but not fiercely. "Your safe!" she purred. "I knew WindClan took you and your brother!" she looked at him with a happy gaze. He just stared at her blankly. "They didn't take us." He murmured. Honeytail's happy expression faded instantly. "What...?" she whispered. She looked horror struck. "You- you went to side with our enemy clan?" she stammered. He could not respond. Behind him he heard a snarl he looked over his shoulder and saw Koishade. Honeytails mate. Koishade pounced on him. Knocking him over. He gasped for breath. Koishade was holding a paw down on his throat. His claws were unsheathed, and they started digging slowly into his throat. He tried to breathe but it was a struggle. He could only take shallow short breaths. He could scent Honeytails unease as her mate was killing her old apprentice. Finally, Honeytail leaped forward. "Koishade stop!" Koishade claws stop sinking into his throat. "Why? He's a traitor!" Koishade spat the word traitor. Robbinpaw flinched at his harsh words. "He's only an apprentice! The warrior code says not to kill your enemy but to give mercy!" Honeytail wailed. Koishade leaped off him his claws raking his neck where Koishade had injured him. He gasped for air. Honeytail looked at him with big sad eyes one last time before running off. He slowly tried pushing himself to his paws, but he was too weak from losing to much blood and fell. A pelt came up beside him and helped him up. He looked over and saw it was Dapperclaw. "You, ok?" he asked his eyes glinted with slight worry. He gasped for another breath of air before speaking. "Y-ye. I'm fine." He struggled to say with the little air he had. "We have a Hawking's over there. see him quick then you can come back to the fight. Ok?" Robbinpaw nodded. "Ok." He limped weakly over to where he saw Hawkwing with a few other injured cats. As he was walking over a body slammed into him knocking him over. He grunted in pain and saw Leopardstripe standing over him. She snarled and raked her claws against his belly. He wailed in pain kicking with all his strength at her. Someone dragged him out from under Leopardstripe and carried him away quickly Leopardstripe on their tail. He looked up and saw it was Hawkwing who was dragging him. Finally, Leopardstripe gave up chasing them. He was laid on a soft patch of grass. He saw Hawkwing pressing herbs to his wounds. It hurt to speak but he did anyway. "Thanks, Hawkwing. I would've been dead without you." He smiled tiredly. "I'm just doing my job." He sighed. He gathered his strength after a little while and Hawkwing cleared him to go back to battle. He leaped back onto the bridge. He spotted Leopardstripe looking weaker than she had before. He found that as his chance and pounced on her from behind. He tackled her till her was on top of her with her belly exposed. He dug his claws into her flank. She groaned in pain and tried swiping at his face but missed. He bit down hard into her neck. Her body shook then fell limp. She was not breathing. Her body grew cold. He let out a yowl of triumph and leaped off her. Another cat bounded over but instead of attacking him she went straight to Leopardstripe's side. "Leopardstripe?" she nudged Leopardstripe's side. "Leopardstripe wake up! No!" she turned her head towards him. "You killed her! You traitor to RiverClan!" she leaped at him pinning him to the ground. She swiped at his eyes and her claws ripped along his face. He yowled in pain. He closed his eyes to keep the blood out and flailed blindly beneath her. She leaped off but he still did not open his eyes. Paws grabbed him and something hit against his head knocking him out cold.
