ONE YEAR AGO

   "It's over, Andrew."

   "You can't be serious."

   Evelyn took a deep breath. "I've never been more serious in my life."

    Andrew wasn't one to argue, so he walked away.

TWO YEARS AGO

    "How does it feel?" Keila asked, grabbing Evelyn's arm and shaking her in excitement.

   Evelyn shrugged. "It's ... whatever."

   Keila rolled her eyes. "Okay, I did not drive all the way to Brooklyn to take you to your driver's license test, when your parents couldn't, just to hear a whatever out of you when you passed. On. The. First. Try!"

   Evelyn grinned. "Okay, you're right. It totally feels like something worth bragging about."

   Keila squealed in excitement. "That's the spirit! Let's go for ice cream or something, my treat."

   "Su—"

    Someone suddenly bumped into Evelyn's shoulder, knocking her back and almost tearing her out of Keila's grasp.

   "Hey! Watch where you're going!" Keila shouted, pulling Evelyn back to her side protectively.

   "I'm sorry!" the boy called back.

   And then he looked at Evelyn. Time was slow for a moment. Any other person would say "he had dark hair" or "he was tall" as the only descriptor. In that split second — the one that felt like much longer — Evelyn knew every minuscule detail about that boy, and for him she was someone he wouldn't easily forget.

   "What was that about?"

   Evelyn blinked, turning back to Keila. "Huh?" She felt like she was talking through cotton, she barely heard herself.

   "Do you know him?" Keila asked, slowly beginning to pull Evelyn away from the DMV again.

   Evelyn blinked again. She didn't know a thing about him, yet she felt as though she could easily pick him out of a crowd. Turning to look over her shoulder, in order to test it out, she instantly saw him. And he was looking back at her as well.

    Evelyn turned back to her friend, shaking her head. "No idea."

   Keila frowned. "Weird. He was looking at you like he knew you."

   Evelyn only shrugged. How can that be explained?

PRESENT DAY

    Andrew and Evelyn set their feet upon the grounds of Brooklyn University, neither of them knowing their stars were about cross again.
