All Alone (Depressed!Reader)

I was diagnosed with depression when I was a freshman in high school, and I hate to admit it, but I wasn't surprised. I had always known that something was wrong with me. That something was different about the way I acted. I had always wanted comfort, to be given love, to be listened to. I had always wanted someone, just anyone, to tell me, "You matter." To say, "I love you as you are."

However, it never happened. What happened instead was that I was the one saying those to others. I never heard that sentence aimed towards me. Instead, I heard myself say it to others. Instead of being loved, I loved.

I was miserable, stuck in a cycle of dark thoughts. Every day my movements were sluggish. Inside, I screamed for help, hoping that someone, anyone would hear my desires and give what I wanted to me. But no one ever did.

Until I met her.

When we first met, I thought she was going to be like the others; ignorant of my pain and laughing at it behind my back.

But she didn't. Instead, we became friends, and the scars within began to heal. She listened, she gave me hugs, she told me that she loved me as who I am, and she didn't care about what others said. She was my solace, my light in this dark world.

I thought it would last, but it didn't.

The day she left, I realized that nothing in this world ever stayed.

She hadn't even said goodbye. She had just disappeared as if I had not mattered to her.

And so, the old scars returned, and I slowly returned to how I was before she came. All the things she had made came undone once she left, and I turned to an empty shell once more.

I was the living dead. I had no purpose, no reason to live. Every day was an extension of suffering. Looking at myself in the mirror, I could only see a stranger as a reflection.

I was all alone.

But one day, when I was getting ready for school, I heard a text come in on my phone.

Slightly curious, I let my hair down and opened it up to read the text.

It was from an unknown number, but the words were enough to have me gasping like a guppy out of pure shock and surprise.

Hey, it's me. I know that this is going to sound weird, but I'm sorry for leaving so abruptly. My family always moves around like crazy, and my mom is crazy deadset on making sure no one remembers us. But I couldn't get you out of my head... So I quickly memorized your phone number and waited for my new phone before using it to text you. I know what I did was unforgivable, but I just wanted to say this; you are loved. I love you, even despite the distance. Don't you ever forget that, [Y/N].

My eyes widened. My body began to shake, and my knees buckled under the pressure.

I sunk to the floor, and tears fell down my cheeks. Of relief or happiness, I didn't know.

But one thing was clear. I was loved. I had always seen the negative side of things, fearing that I would just end up disappointed.

Yet, in the end, I realized how selfish and self-centered I had been. I had so much love around me, even despite the distance. I had people who loved me for who I am.

That's all that mattered now. I'm sure of it.

That day, I learnt about the magic of friendship; even though you can't see each other face to face, you are still loved.

So we should never give up.
