Chapter 5: Toxic Gyan-Avspar
"Now that I'm in position, Artabeles, we ought to have our characters introduced to each other!" Marjorine also sees a handful of other trans characters at a strip mall's café.
Artabeles is quickly met by one of Gordon's trans characters, and other people wanting to play with Marjorine because she somehow gained fame among the RCG community for discovering the trans characters' sleep disorder bug. They all stand in line to place their orders for pastries and coffee.
Gordon: The trans characters' sleep disorder bug was seriously game-breaking, thank God for you finding it!
Once all the trans ghosts wanting to play with Marjorine are in the café, there seemed to be no seat left in it for additional ghosts to be seated, NPC or player-controlled. However, none of them really wanted to hit on Marjo's ghost, except for Artabeles'. Whose male trans ghost wears a costume not unlike the heavy armor dropped by the Perserian haunted parks in MAA when that game existed. That is, he made his trans ghost wear a gyan-avspar outfit. Good idea to check on everyone's career lines; I assume that there will come a time when I need them in-game, and vice-versa.
So while her viewers learn the not-gyan-avspar works in show-business, Artabeles makes his trans male ghost focus on Marjo's, oblivious to the feelings of the player at the other end.
"What's going on here? What could your character like about mine, other than their players being united in their use of trans ghosts?" a puzzled Marjorine asks, hoping that Artabeles would answer.
Artabeles: My character might want a new costume for a new role, so I am hoping that you might make it
I hope that she understands show-business, as an in-game career, differs from more "regular" careers, in that simply meeting audition requirements won't guarantee you will get any kind of work, and hence paycheck, Artabeles muses while his character is still at the C-lister stage. Which is still relatively low, but not entry-level either.
Also, Artabeles sends her what he wants out of an outfit, as well as the relevant trans symbols. He then tells her about the Haunted Bazaar, which is accessible by phone.
"Here we go: I am going to tell you about the Haunted Bazaar. It may be spooky, but I feel like it's a must for anyone wanting to craft!" Marjo then explores what can be sold on the Haunted Bazaar, and it's a whole new world of merchandise opening up to her.
What she finds includes crafting recipes, including dyes, clothes, dishes and so on, as well as the finished products. And it dawned on her that, if she wants to craft dyes, she may as well have her male trans character change careers. Especially when some dye recipes require users to reach a certain level in the science career and require specialized equipment to make.
"All right, I realize that I have been playing this game wrong, so now I am about to change my male trans' career!" Marjo shouts while she has her female trans character return home.
Upon having her female trans return to her in-game home, after having made new in-game friends, she realizes that her male trans character has become a drug dealer, while her female cis character has earned her first promotion.
"It's over, no more crimes for you!" Marjo scolds her male trans for her initial choice of having him commit crimes for a living, like a judge about to render a guilty verdict.
By this point, as "punishment" for the crimes he committed at work, I may as well pretend that the court had him serve as a test subject as a condition to get his criminal record expunged, and have him remain in the career until such time the court sees fit, she muses about the storyline in mind for that character as she tries to get a grip on how to draw clothing patterns in-game.
But as she keeps playing, she realizes that the clock is ticking in on her to start producing the outfits, or at the very least, the base materials to craft them.
The following in-game day, she has her farm hand ghost tend to the crops for the first harvest done with the garden plots. Raw cotton, produce and all that, which takes him two in-game hours, and the moment of truth is forthcoming, with one pound of raw cotton per plant.
At this point, while her male trans is away at his new workplace, she watches closely what the weaving machine is about to yield for the raw cotton being fed into it. It's not instant, and it seems that it's going to take a while, given the amount of raw cotton being inserted.
OK, this is my current daily cotton yield, this determines how many outfits I can have my characters sew in an in-game day. And also how much I can earn. But later on, I will be able to design the outfit Artabeles asked me for that male trans character, Marjo is still overjoyed by the baby step she took towards her in-game goals.
She then spends hours getting her four ghosts' finances in order, and level the skills required to progress their careers, she then unlocks the ability to design outfits.
"Woohoo!" an overjoyed Marjo then starts designing the outfit Artabeles asked for earlier in the stream.
The viewers are then treated to a screen where she can apply hems, strips of cloth, and so on, with Artabeles directing the details he wants added to it. Is it me or this outfit feels very... Middle Eastern? I can't complain about the player's tastes, but I may as well make a second unit for the Haunted Bazaar.
It's then that Artabeles has his male trans character hail a cab to Marjo's in-game house to take delivery of the outfit, and then pay for it. Upon arriving at said house, and knocking at her in-game door...
Artabeles: You see, even gyan-avspar still had lives outside of the military
"Gyan-avspar?" Marjo yelps as she rolls her eyes on air. "What the hell are gyan-avspar?"
Gordon: You were drawn to Marjo because she played trans characters, and discovered the sleep issue bug; now you talk about how your character plays the role of a gyan-avspar?
"Also, what do you hope to gain by visiting my in-game home over using the Haunted Bazaar?" Marjo's face turns red.
Artabeles: I know how much the Haunted Bazaar charges me in fees and taxes; perhaps I can have the outfit for cheaper that way
Why won't Artabeles tell us what a gyan-avspar is? Did gyan-avspar actually exist? She asks herself while her head is down on her desk for a few moments.
However, the trading screen is up, with the payment Artabeles' character is about to make, but Marjo having yet to hand over the outfit to him. For 3500 piastres, that character got a deluxe, hand-crafted outfit, if a bit expensive.
"Thank you, Artabeles!" she beams upon receipt of the in-game payment, with which she makes a loan payment.
Just before she goes to sleep, she peruses the outfits currently for sale on the Haunted Bazaar. So many outfits I could replace all four of my characters' wardrobes if I could afford it, she muses as her eyes widen upon seeing such a wide array of outfits.
So it seems like a lot of the outfits for sale on the Haunted Bazaar feel either contemporary or fantasy, and the latter tends to be very frilly if they aren't outfits originally from MAA. And, of course, this reflects the styles available in the base game, even with these two categories they came from.
When going to sleep, Marjo can't help but to think of her characters' career progressions. Especially her male trans. I am made to feel like the game's school system allows people with limited research experience to teach science in high school with no other qualifications than a high school diploma, provided you have any. And the equipment required to make dyes and potions is unlocked with that job? The good news is: the game doesn't seem to be very grindy. I might reach the top of my characters' career paths in a weekend or two.
But she turns in her bed as she tries to stop thinking about the game, or what happened at work earlier today.
-------------------
Unlike her previous dream, Marjo was brought not to Pandemonium as portrayed in MAA, but to some Ilkhanate-era tower off the Strait of Hormuz's Iranian coast. Dressed in a light-yellow dress, the bulky mulatto was surrounded by two of her most fervent followers, Artabeles and Sigrun, and sitting on a bench.
The first one she readily recognized, Artabeles, but in the hubbub of their initial in-game meeting, she couldn't get more than a glimpse of the second other than the second played a transfem ghost.
"Marjo, there's more to being ready for the endgame than rising to the top of a character's career ladder!" Sigrun's transfem ghost scolded her. "You forgot about the dream system!"
"Dream... system?" a clueless Marjorine asked the transfem ghost while Artabeles appeared in front of her, dressed in ceremonial dress not unlike those worn by Sassanid nobles.
"You're too slow in getting wish points! Your priority should be to neutralize sleep!" the transfem ghost kept scolding her, before handing off to Artabeles.
"Yeah, with wish points, you can buy permanent buffs for your characters, called dreams come true, but neutralizing sleep is the most expensive dream come true in the game!" Artabeles explained to the bulky mulatto.
"How am I to get wish points?" Marjo asked the other two.
"I can guarantee you that, once you have neutralized sleep on one ghost, you will never want to play ghosts with sleep again!" Sigrun's ghost harrowed her, while circling around.
"What's so special about neutralizing sleep that would make it the game-changer you make it out to be? On top of that, you never told me about how to get wish points!" a distraught Marjo asked her.
"You should have realized by now that sleep is the largest source of downtime for any given ghost! Once you neutralize a need on a ghost, then you'll understand better why the devs even call the game Remote-Controlled Ghosts to begin with!"
The early game is more realistic than the endgame. But need-neutralizing dreams come true are very expensive in terms of wish points, and the second most expensive one neutralizes hunger, Sigrun's transfem ghost mused about the gameplay impact of neutralizing needs.
"You will be at a disadvantage in the endgame if you don't get started getting wish points right away!" Artabeles scolded her.
"You two make me feel like optimization is everything in this game!"
"How clueless you are as a gamer! You might be a little young to have experienced the heyday of esports, but if you ever played an online video game competitively, you would realize that, for any given patch, you're essentially forced to use builds that are jokingly called the flavors of the month to remain relevant!" the transfem ghost yelled at her.
"Technically, you have an infinite source of wish points, but the fastest source of wish points, while leveling, is made up of dozens of independent, one-time quest lines! Check against the quest journal next time you play!" Artabeles advised her oneiric self. "Turn in the wish quests you can!"
"Where do I access the wish quest journal?" Marjo's tone of voice becomes increasingly distraught as the two trans ghosts keep circling around her, and Artabeles ready to swing a shamshir at her if provoked.
"One more thing: don't spend your wish points on consumables, nor on the lesser version of the need neutralizers!" the transfem ghost yelled at her.
"ENOUGH!" Marjo's oneiric self screamed at both trans ghosts, louder than both put together, breaking their ears.
"We'll let you go, but only if you promise not to spend your characters' wish points until you neutralize their sleep!" Artabeles made his offer to her, with his ears buzzing.
"On one condition: you tell me how to access the wish points system!" Marjo was about to intensify the screaming. "NOW!"
-------------------
Marjo, startled by this oneiric display of gaming toxicity, wakes up and logs back into the game, in the dead of night, checking on her characters' quest journals and what quest objectives they are closing in on. Like, for the farmer who previously wrote one book, have the farmer write another one.
One more quest, and I'll try sleeping again! She muses while she determines that getting the fashionista to put a pattern for sale might be worth the rewards associated with it. And hopefully earn some in-game royalties from its sale. I could always DM Artabeles on Twitch to ask what a gyan-avspar even is.
