Bonnie's session the next day with Damon, he called early due to her distraction. When she didn't even accept his offer of a drink and some conversation, he managed to wait until after she left to frown worriedly after her. He poured himself a drink and swirled it in his hand as he lost himself in thought. Was it because of the 'moment' they'd had yesterday? She'd decided that she'd rather not get close. He couldn't blame her if that was the case. He wasn't exactly an easy person to deal with and he knew that. She probably realized she was better off without him. She needed him to teach her to fight and that was it. Damon decided to keep their interaction within those parameters from now on.
Bonnie had no idea the inner turmoil she was leaving Damon in as she headed for Caroline's house. She was glad that her mother was at work today so they could talk privately. They still ensconced themselves in Caroline's room though for added privacy before Bonnie told her, "I want you to turn me."
"Huh?" Caroline asked with wide eyes, not sure she heard that correctly.
"I want to be a vampire. I want you to turn me," Bonnie said seriously.
"Where is this coming from?" Caroline asked worriedly.
"I've been thinking about it since I lost my magic actually," Bonnie told her. "I hate being a normal vulnerable human. I can't take it. I /need/ to be a part of the supernatural world. Like its in my bones. I can't get my magic back so this is the only way. Please, Caroline."
"Okay, so I'm not saying no. Just...I need to make sure you know what you're asking for," Caroline said, still a little taken aback. She wasn't going to take her friend's decision away from her, but she could at least make sure she was making an informed one. "If you become a vampire, you'll never be able to have kids or a family."
"I've never been completely sold on the idea of kids anyway," Bonnie shrugged. "If I'd kept my magic, I would have wanted at least one to carry on the family legacy and all," something she'd never gotten around to in the future, but had been considering before it was too late which it almost was. "But without it, I just don't see the point."
"You'll have to watch everyone you care about, aside from other vampires, grow old and die. You'll have to deal with losing them and have much more intense emotions to have to deal with it too."
"I know. And that'll suck. But I'll still have you. And you'll have me. You won't have to watch me die either. We can be there for each other," Bonnie replied. She knew Caroline well and knew exactly what objections she would bring up and had ready made responses for them.
"You won't be able to make lasting friends, or have a steady job, or do anything that puts you in the public eye," Caroline added.
"When have you ever known me to enjoy being in the public eye or having loads of friends? And I'm good with changing jobs and exploring different things over time and all," Bonnie told her.
"What about a daylight ring? Since you don't have your magic anymore..."
"Oh right. I almost forgot," Bonnie pulled the folded up paper from her pocket. "The daylight spell. Just in case you need to find another witch to cast it. Which I already did. I have my own daylight ring and even a spare in case either of us loses ours or if Elena ever decides to be a vampire too or whatever."
"You really have thought about this, haven't you," Caroline realized. If she'd already gone that far in her thinking then this obviously wasn't a spur of the moment thing. When Bonnie held up her hand with what was apparently the daylight ring already on it, she was sure of it. "Okay, just one more thing to make sure you know. The hunger. It never goes away. It's a constant ache that you'll have to learn to live with. Sure, it gets easier to ignore and all, but it's always there."
"Yeah. I've heard. But I can manage it," Bonnie assured her.
"What if you're a ripper?" Caroline had to ask.
"Then I'll handle that too. But rippers are really rare. It's not likely that I'll be one," Bonnie told her. She had evidence from the future that rippers /could/ learn control. It was just a lot harder for them. Stefan had eventually. And it would probably be easier if it started from the beginning. She would let Damon help her with that since she didn't think Caroline could manage that much. If she was a normal vampire then yeah, Caroline could teach her the basics, though she would probably have to ask Damon to teach her live feeding since Caroline never did that. Bonnie saw no problem with it though as long as she wasn't killing anyone. She was pretty sure Caroline's issues with it were more related to Stefan's judgmental opinions when she was learning. She'd eventually gotten over it in the future for the most part, though always preferred blood bags.
"Okay then. If you're sure this is what you want. When and how do you want to do this?" she asked.
"If you have some blood here, we can do it now?" Bonnie suggested.
"I have a little bit here, yeah. Since Mom is in the know again and all, she lets me keep a few bags hidden in the fridge for emergencies and I can always go get some more from Damon. He takes care of all the stocking and stuff," Caroline nodded, getting a little nervous now. "I've never turned anyone before though."
"That's okay. I've never been turned before so it'll be something new for both of us," Bonnie joked, pulling a chuckle from Caroline.
"Okay then. Here goes," Caroline took a deep breath and bit her wrist open, holding it out to Bonnie who took a long drink, scrunching up her nose at the taste. Caroline pulled Bonnie into a hug, preferring to break her neck that way in a nice gesture of love and friendship rather than cold and impersonal. "You're /really/ sure this is what you want? Once I do this there's no going back. You can take some time to think about it a little more if you need to," she said nervously.
"I'm absolutely sure, Caroline. Really. And if it does go bad, it's not your fault. It's my decision and you're being a good friend by respecting that," she assured her, knowing that at least part of her worry was over being blamed if Bonnie hated it.
"Okay. Here goes then," Caroline breathed out and winced as she snapped Bonnie's neck. She laid her gently out on the bed and then went downstairs to grab her three emergency blood bags from the fridge to wait until Bonnie woke up. She felt like she was crawling out of her skin and was pacing the room before Bonnie let out a gasp and sat straight up. "Hey, shh. It's okay. You're okay," she said gently, remembering how jarring that could be. "Blood?"
"Thank you," Bonnie said gratefully as she took the blood bag, trying to catch her breath before she put it to her mouth and took a sip. She let out a slight whimper as her fangs broke through, but then she just needed more of the blood. She finished the first bag in no time and then took the second offered one.
Before Caroline handed her the third, she said, "Just sip this one. You're not hungry anymore. It just feels that way. It helps if you just take a sip or two whenever the feeling gets too much." That was something that she wished Stefan had told her in the beginning, but she figured it out on her own soon enough.
Bonnie nodded and took it, but didn't sip it yet. "I can definitely see what you mean about the hunger. I feel like I'm still starving."
"You'll get used to that. How do you feel otherwise?" Caroline asked her.
"I...don't even know. It's all so jumbled and all over the place and overwhelming and..." Bonnie was glad that she'd prepared herself mentally for this as much as she could otherwise she'd be a mess. "I can't imagine how rough you must have had it going through this alone and not even knowing what was happening."
"It was awful. But I'll be here for you. You don't have to worry," Caroline promised her. "We probably shouldn't stay here though. Is your dad out of town again right now?"
"Yeah, he won't be back until next week. I'm thinking of moving into Grams' house though so I can keep blood at home too."
"Okay, well we can go stay there for now while you're adjusting and take the time to get you packed up and moved in the process?" Caroline suggested, not really wanting a newbie vampire in the house with her mom if it could be avoided.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea," Bonnie agreed, feeling suddenly emotional over the idea of moving out of her father's house and on the verge of bursting into tears which was ridiculous since she was essentially forty-three years old and hadn't lived with her father in decades. She'd barely even seen him since she'd been back. He'd died over twenty years ago to her point of view. That thought was the last straw for her tears as she broke down.
"Oh sweetie," Caroline pulled her into a comforting hug. "It's okay. Your emotions are going to be all over the place for a while. Maybe we shouldn't think about something as heavy as moving for a little while."
"Yeah. Maybe," Bonnie sniffled as she clung to her best friend.
