Chapter 44
*Daryl's POV*
I sat behind Adelyne on the steps and wrapped my arms around her shoulder. She clutched onto them an leaned into my embrace and I kissed her ear through her hair. I felt her shiver and then giggle. I loved this woman she was the most amazing thing that ever walked into my life. And I'd be damned if I was going to lose her.
"So the Randall thing" I started.
I felt her sigh and she leaned her head back and closed her eyes.
"I heard they're deciding his fate. I'm positive that they're going to kill him" her voice was soft.
I leaned my chin on her shoulder.
"You don't agree?" I asked.
I was becoming intoxicated by her smell she smelled amazing. And she was like putty in my hands. I loved the way she melted into my embrace and was so comfortable with me unlike some who were intimidated by me. Adelyne ran her fingers along my forearm and kissed my arm.
"I don't know. I was a mom so killing a kid is something I don't want to do. I honestly don't think he would hurt any of us. I went to see him, he just seems like a scared kid and-"
"You went to see him? By yourself?" I asked suddenly irked and concerned for her safety.
She angled her head so she could look at me. Her green eyes peering into mine with concern and uncertainty.
"Yeah."
I released her and she turned completely looking at me. A few locks of hair came lose from her ponytail and layed across her shoulder and the way the light was hitting her she looked like an angel. Damn this woman. This is why I wanted her to be safe. Adelyne was a great fighter and a good shot with a bow and gun but she was impulisive. Not all the time but sometimes. And there was no way I was going to lose her because she felt the need to take matters into her own hands.
"I don't want you going to see him Adelyne. He's a threat his friends can roll through and hurt us. Kill us all, I'm not going to lose you because you're being reckless" I explained to her.
Adelyne's eyes widened and she scoffed.
"Yeah his friends. Not him Daryl he is a kid can't be any older that twenty or so. I don't think he would harm us" she explained.
I ran a hand through my hair. She wasn't understanding the point.
"Adelyne he was part of the group. He shot at our friends your father. He could've died-"
"Yes but he's okay and he's here that's over and done with. Daryl he's a kid. A scared teenager and we're going to kill her and for what because we're scared?" she looked at me with a confused look.
I bit my lip and sighed. I was seeing her point but I cared more about her than I did about this skimpy kid. I ran a hand through my hair looking at her.
"Aren't you?"
Adelyne sucked in her bottom lip and caught it with her teeth and shrugged unsureof how to answer. I waited for an answer but she never offered one. I watched as Adelyne stood up and she bent down and pressed a kiss to my mouth and I watched her walk away. The swing of her hips had me locked. Her knife was in the holster along with her gun that also hung in it's own spot. Her legs were great and I couldn't help but stare. My eyes wandered to her boots that came up tp alomst her knee and stopped. I seen the knife she tucked in her boot shining in the light and I shook my head. Damn she was such a badass and she was so sexy. How did I ever get so lucky?

*Adelyne's POV*
The sun was setting and that meant that is was time to decide Randall's fate. My stomach felt tied in knots. We all stood in the living room of Hershel's house and everything was silent. Lori and Rick told Carl that he was to go elsehwere they didn't want him listenting. and I agreeded not this time. I seen him out of the corner of my eye and Rick followed my gaze and I went over to Carl and gave him my Ipod and told him he was to leave and I was spend time with him later. He wasn't happy about it I kissed his forhead and sent him along on his way. He looked back at me with hurt eyes and I gave him a look and then he left. I went back into the living room and we all waited for Rick to talk. I looked to Daryl who nodded at me and I nodded back and looked away waiting for everything to start.
"So how do we do this? Just take a vote?" Glenn asked surpising me.
"Does it have to be unanimous?" Andrea asked.
"How about majority rules?"
I just wanted evetrything to be over and setteld woth so we didn't have to talked about it anymore. Rick stepped forwards,
"Well, let's just see where everybody stands then we can talk throught the options."
I bit my lip waiting.
"Well the way I see it, there's only one way to move forward" Shane annouced.
"Killing him, right?" Dale said deirecting everyone's attention. "I mean, why even bother to take a vote? It's clear which way the wind is blowing."
Rick ran a hand through his hair.
"Well if people believe we should spare him, I want to know." Dale looked around at all of us."Well I can tell you it's a small group--probably just Adelyne, Glenn, and I."
I looked away but I seen Dale with look at Glenn and Glenn sighed.
"Look, I think you're pretty much right about everything, all the time but this--"
"They've got you scared" Dale exclaimed.
My eyes locked with Daryl and I frowned I seen him almost wa;k over to me but he stopped himself.
"He's not one of us. And we've-- we've lost to many people already."
I took a deep breath and silence captured the air.
"Yes Glenn that is true. But not because of his people that right there is a differnce" I explained and Dale looked at me with a grateful gaze.
Once again there was silence.
"How about you? Do you agree with this?" Dale asked motioning in Maggie's direction.
She had her arms crossed over her chest. Looking about as unsure as me.
"Couldn't we continue keeping him prisoner?"
"Just another mouth to feed" Daryl chimed in.
Hershel cleared his throat.
"It could be alean winter."
"We can ration better" Lori spoke.
"Well he can be an asset.Give him a chance to prove himself" Dale said with a raised voice getting everyone's attention again.
"Put him to work?" I said unsure if that was good idea myself.
But he was a kid and I didn't want him to get killed.Rick shook his head.
"We're not letting him walk around."
"We could put an escort on him." Maggie suggested.
I heard shane chuckle and he leaned his head back with that cocky look he seemed to always have when he didn't agree. I've known Shane for years and deep down I knew he was an asshole. Yes he saved my life and I am grateful but he also wasn't the nicest guy.
"Who wants to volunteer for that duty?" Shane asked.
"I will" I spoke up.
"No" came three diffrent voice aimed at me.
Wow right on cue at the same time.Rick and Daryl Just like back in Atalnta when I offered to get the guns. Only this time Lori's voice was in the mix.
"I don't think any of us should be walking around with this guy" Rick told us.
Lori nodded and leaned against the wall.
"He's right. I wouldn't feel safe unless he was tied up."
"We can't exactly put chains around his ankles, and sentence him to hard labor" Andrea explained.
I had to admit she made a point. That would be workng him like a slave. Shane moved from his position.
"Look, say we let him join us. Maybe he's helpful, maybe he's nice. We let our guard down and maybe he runs off, brings back his thirty men" he explained.
"So the answer is to kill him to prevent a crime that he may never even attempt? If we do this, we're saying there's no hope. Rule of law is dead. There is no civilization" Dale was passionate about this.
I put my hand on his shoulder and he looked at me. Daryl and I may not have agreed on this but I was with Dale. I couldn't do it I just couldn't.
"Could you drive him further out? Leave him like you planned?" Hershel asked.
"Basically leave him for the walkers" I said and everyone looked at me and I knew they knew I was right.
If we let him go he would be killed by a walker or walkers.
"You barely came back this time" Lori told us. "There are walkers you can break down you can get lost."
"Or you could get ambushed" Daryl spoke.
I looked at him and then Rick.
"We should not put our own people at risk."
"If you go through with it, how would you do it? would he suffer?" Petrisha asked.
It was the first thing she said since this whole discussion started. Shane shrugged.
"We can hang him right? Just snap his neck."
" I thought about that. Shooting maybe more humane."
"Dad" I said with pleading eyes and he looked at me but he brought himself to look away.
"And what about the body? Do we bury him?"
"Hold on, hold on. you're talking about this like it's already decided" Dale told us.
"You've been talking all day, going around in circles. You just wanna go around in circles again?" Daryl asked.
I hung my head for a second and ran my hand throuh my hair taking a deep breath.
"This is a young man's life! and it is worth more than a five minute conversation. Is this what it's come to? We kill someone because we can't decide what else to do with him? You saved him and now look at us. He's been tortured he's gonna be executed. How are we any better than those people that we're so afraid of?"
Silence coated the air again. then Shane said,
"We all know what has to be done."
"No, Dale is right. We can't leave any stone unturned here. We have a responsibility--"
"So what's the other solution? We haven't come up with a single viable option yet. i wish we could." Andrea began.
"So let's work on it!" Dale yelled.
"We are."
"Stop it. Just stop it. I'm sick of everyone arguing and fighting. I didn't ask for this. You can't ask us to decide something like this. Please, decide-- eother of you both of you-- but leave me out" Carol spoke standing up.
It shocked me I though Carol was going to be the one to stay silent. She his in tha shadows but we knew she was there.
"Not speaking out or killing him yourself there's no difference."
Rick cleared his throat.
"All right, that's enough if anyone wants the floor before we make a final decision now is the chance."
Again there was silence I wasn't going to say anything but before I could stop myself it came flying out of my mouth.
"Dad you once said that we don't kill the living" I told him.
He looked at me with a serious look.
"That was before the living tried to kill us"
"But don't you see? If we do this, the people that we were--the world that we knew is dead. And this new world is ugly. It's...harsh. It's survival of the fittest. And that's a world I don't want to live in and I don't believe that any of you do. I can't. Please let's just do what's right. Isn't there anyone else that's gonna stand with me?" Dale asked.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
"I do" I said causing everyone to look at me.
There was silence again.
"He's right. We should try to find another way" Andrea said walking over to us.
She put her arm around my shoulder. We didn't always agree and we fought but she had my back too.
"Anybody else?" Rick asked.
I was hoping someone would say something but no one did. We all looked around and everyone stayed silent. I don't know if it's because they were afriad to say what they really thought or did they all agree with killing him?
"You all gonna watch too? No, you'll go hide your heads in your tents and try to forget we're slaughtering a human being. Whoa. I won't be a party to it." Dale started to walk out and stopped to put his hand on Daryl's shoulder.
"This group is broken."
I looked to Daryl who looked at me. Did Daryl really say that to him?
